Sony signs four-year extension to title sponsorship of Sony Open in Hawaii

Sony, one of the PGA TOUR’s longest-tenured title sponsors, will remain the title sponsor of the Sony Open in Hawaii through 2026 after signing a four-year extension. Sony has sponsored the Sony Open in Hawaii continuously since 1999 in support of Friends of Hawaii Charities. Nearly $22 million has been donated to over 350 charities to date, making the tournament the largest charity sports event in Hawaii. “Sony has had a tremendous impact in building the Sony Open in Hawaii into what it is today – a favorite among our players and fans – while making an indelible charitable impact throughout the Hawaiian Islands,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “We appreciate Sony’s friendship and thank them for their loyalty in extending their partnership an additional four years.” As the largest charity golf event in Hawaii, with charity proceeds totaling more than $1 million annually, the Sony Open impacts more than 100 non-profit organizations each year. And while this past year was especially challenging due to the pandemic, Sony made it possible for the the tournament to match the previous year’s charitable total at a time when community support was especially critical. Historic Waialae Country Club has hosted the Sony Open every year since 1965. It has been the setting for some of the PGA TOUR’s most memorable moments. Justin Thomas shot the lowest score in a 72-hole event in PGA TOUR history (253, including a first-round 59) to win the 2017 Sony Open. Isao Aoki became the first Japanese winner in PGA TOUR history after famously won the 1980 Sony Open after holing out from 130 yards for eagle on the 72nd hole. Past winners at Waialae include Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin, Lanny Wadkins, Mark O’Meara, Corey Pavin, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh. The Sony Open debuted in 1965. In 1999, Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc., became the host organization and Sony became title sponsor. “Almost 25 years ago, a partnership built on respect for culture, custom, commitment to community, innovation and excellence was formed between the Sony Group Corporation and the Friends of Hawaii Charities. This marked the birth of the Sony Open in Hawaii — a treasure to the people of Hawaii and beyond,” said Corbett Kalama, President of event charity host, Friends of Hawaii Charities. “The Sony Group made today a banner day by renewing its commitment to Hawaii by extending its sponsorship of the Sony Open in Hawaii on the PGA TOUR another four years!” Kalama continued. “Coupled with the loyal support of Waialae Country Club, Hawaii Tourism Authority, numerous business sponsors, and over 1500 volunteers, Sony has once again demonstrated visionary genius by aligning peerless technology, the best golf pros from Japan and the PGA TOUR, with the alluring beauty of Hawaii for the global television audience, all while honoring its commitment to help thousands of islanders in need. Mahalo Sony for being true friends of Hawaii charities!” The 2022 Sony Open at Hawaii will be held Jan. 13-16 at Waialae Country Club with Kevin Na expected to defend his 2021 title.

Users may create entries and make selections at any time from March 19, 2018 until just prior to commencement of competitive play in the Championship on March 21, 2018 (“Challenge Periodâ€). The Challenge competition begins on March 21, 2018, and ends March 25, 2018. KEY DATES: March 7, 2018: Early registration available to general public to sign up and create leagues March 19, 2018: Bracket available to registered users to make picks. March 21, 2018: Deadline to submit picks is before the first scheduled tee time of the tournament. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the Challenge is to accumulate the most points by correctly selecting the “winning pick” for each of the thirty-one (31) match-ups associated with the Championship. HOW TO PLAY: After registering, to make selections, a user must complete the entire bracket by predicting one (1) winner for each match-up in the Championship. The user will make a prediction by clicking on the name of the golfer they believe will advance to the next round of the Championship (i.e., one golfer out of each Round Robin starting group of 4 to advance to the Round of 16). Users will then advance golfers all the way through the bracket to the Championship match and 3rd place match. After completing all selections, users must enter a prediction for the tiebreaker question: How many birdies will there be during the Championship match? The tiebreaker question will be used to determine a winner in the event that there is a tie for the most points awarded (see Scoring below). All selections, including the tie-breaker prediction, must be submitted during the Challenge Period. Users may have the opportunity to create a private group and invite friends to play along and/or join a private or public group that has already been created. No additional prizes will be awarded in connection with groups. SCORING Points for a correct pick in a given round is shown below: Group Winner : 10 points per pick Round of 16 : 20 points per pick Round of 8 : 40 points per pick Semi Finals: 80 points per pick Championship : 160 points Third Place Match : 40 Points c. Lock-time . All picks will lock at the scheduled first tee time on March 21, 2018. Prizing Three (3) prizes will be awarded. The overall winner, overall runner up and overall third place winner will be determined by the top three highest cumulative points totals from among all eligible entries received during the Challenge period, with the overall winner having the highest score, the overall runner up having the second highest score and the overall third place winner having the third highest score. Cumulative point totals are calculated by summing all of a user’s matchups during the contest period. In the case of a tie for highest score, the user who correctly answered the tie breaker question for number of birdies during the final match will be the winner. In the event that two or more entries are still tied after applying this tiebreaker, a winner will be randomly selected from among those still tied. The overall winner will win a $300 gift card to PGA TOUR Superstores The overall runner-up will win a $150 gift card to PGA TOUR Superstores The overall third place winner will win a dozen golf balls of their choice (approx. $60 in value) Total ARV of all prizes is US $510. Limit one prize per person/household. All federal, state, local, municipal and provincial taxes related to the prize are the sole responsibility of the winner. All fees and surcharges on the prize, if applicable, are the sole responsibility of the winner. Winners will be identified within approximately 10 days following the Challenge Period.
