Snedeker, Simpson start hot at Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A Wyndham Championship brain-teaser: What do Tim Petrovic, Billy Mayfair, Jeff Overton, George McNeill and C.T. Pan have in common? Answer: All have finished second to Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson at the Wyndham. Snedeker, who won the tournament in 2007 and 2018, and Simpson, who did it in 2011, wasted no time in assuming their superhero identities here, each opening with a 6-under 64 to trail early leader Byeong Hun An by two strokes after the completion of the morning wave. Mackenzie Hughes, Patrick Rodgers and Rory Sabbatini each signed for 7-under 63. “I’m definitely a horse for a course,â€ said Snedeker, 38, who came into this week with a 67.4 career average at Forest Oaks C.C., where he won in ’07, and Sedgefield, where he opened with a 59 on the way to victory last season. “This golf course kind of sets up perfectly for me, I love it, I know how to play it, so no real big surprises out there.â€ At 32nd in the FedExCup, the nine-time PGA TOUR winner has work to do to get back to East Lake for the season-ending TOUR Championship, which he won on the way to the FedExCup title in 2012. And he’s not even on the radar to make this year’s Presidents Cup team. His career, though, has one thing in common with Tiger Woods, this year’s U.S. captain. Like Woods, Snedeker has feasted at his favorite events, winning twice at not just the Wyndham, but also the Farmers Insurance Open and AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Snedeker laughed off the comparison. “Yeah, I think Tiger won at one golf course as many times as I’ve won in my whole career,â€ he said, “so he’s got me beat there a little bit.â€ As for the prospect of the Presidents Cup, he added, “I need to win some golf tournaments and kind of get my game to where I feel like I would be a deserving pick.â€ Last year’s runaway winner of THE PLAYERS Championship, Simpson, 33, is much higher up the list of U.S. Presidents Cup Team hopefuls, up from 11th to 10th after his runner-up finish at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational last week. Just outside the top eight who will automatically make the team, he expressed his disappointment to Woods that he hadn’t moved up higher. Woods told him to play better, which Simpson laughed about earlier this week. Much like Snedeker, Simpson, whose career-scoring average at the Wyndham was an even spiffier 67.0 coming into this week, appreciates everything about this tournament. He and his wife, Dowd, even named one of their five kids Wyndham, but call her Winnie. “I love the Bermudagrass,â€ Simpson said. “I love having options off the tee, hitting different clubs, undulating greens. … You know, my brother lives here, (I) went to Wake (Forest) 30 minutes down the road; I just feel very comfortable here and always love coming here.â€ The tournament was under lift-clean-and-place rules after a storm dumped seven inches of rain in downtown Greensboro on Wednesday night, but only an inch or so at Sedgefield. To a man, the morning wave of players raved about perfect greens, which Patrick Rodgers (63) likened to “putting on a pool tableâ€ after he had made a gaudy 166 feet of putts. Simpson eagled the par-5 fifth hole and had two bogeys in his round. Starting on the back nine, he was even par through his first seven holes before catching fire. He said he believes Woods is watching, and added he might text him again Sunday night if he keeps playing well. “It’s on your mind all the time,â€ he said of the prospect of making Woods’ Presidents Cup team. If there’s such a thing as an all-Wyndham team, Simpson and Snedeker are already on it.

Tiger Woods Chasing 82, Chapter 9: The Great Comeback Part IITiger Woods Chasing 82, Chapter 9: The Great Comeback Part II

For all the times during the 2017-18 season when it was mentioned how Tiger Woods was working on his seventh winless season since 2009, a voice in the back of your head begged perspective. The winless campaigns of 2010-11 and 2014-17 had involved a grand total of just 40 tournaments, for goodness sakes, and there had been a litany of issues, most of them circled around injuries. But this comeback in 2017-18? It just felt so different, starting with the fact he teed it up in 18 PGA TOUR tournaments, the most since 2012, and continuing into his competitive pulse, which was alive and throbbing like it hadn’t been in years. In those other seasons when he hadn’t won, Woods had rarely gotten into the mix, with just five top-10s, but never a second or third. In the early months of 2018, however, he was competitive in two of his first three starts, then came a pair of Florida stops – the Valspar Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard– when he went deep into Sunday with a flicker of hope. Other top 10s followed, including The Open Championship when he seized the outright lead in the final round, then in August it nearly all came together at the PGA Championship, when he finished second, his best finish in five seasons. He was close. No one had to say it; everyone could feel it. Trouble is, the ladder of a 2017-18 season was on its last rung when Woods arrived at his first TOUR Championship since 2013. Win No. 80: Sept. 13, 2018 – TOUR Championship It was easily forgotten that Woods opened this tournament with a bogey when he concluded his first-round 65 with an eagle at the par-5 18th. And as ho-hum as his second-round 68 was to again share the lead, a third round that featured an electric six birdies in the first seven holes seemingly had everyone thinking we were in a Woods time tunnel. “I wasn’t sure he’d play again, much less have a chance to win, marveled heralded swing coach Butch Harmon. Building a three-stroke lead after his second round of 65 in three days, Woods made David Duval sound prophetic. Earlier in the season, to all the young stars who opined how they wanted Woods to return to form so they could play against the best at his best, Duval shook his head and cautioned: “The hell you do. True, Woods hit some turbulence down the stretch with bogeys at the 15th and 16th holes, but his final-round 71 for 11-under 269 did more than record a two-stroke win. It unleashed a scene like few had ever seen, one that was reminiscent of those days of The Open Championship when spectators were given the right to follow in behind the final golfers on the march toward the 18th green. “I’ve played here a handful of times and never seen crowds like this, Keegan Bradley told reporters, in awe of the thousands of fans who filled the 18th fairway behind Woods and Rory McIlroy. “I’ve never seen half this many people. That’s a small example of what he does. The Twitter world was filled with praise from fellow sports icons – from Jack Nicklaus to Emmitt Smith to Michael Phelps – and Woods’ peers stuck around to offer their respect. “It wasn’t whether he could win, said Rickie Fowler. “It was whether he could stay healthy. And from Justin Rose, who cemented his victory as season-long FedExCup Champion and understood why it took second billing: “I think that we’ve all been waiting for him to win, and we’ve been wanting him to win. As a result, Tiger’s chase of Sam Snead’s record has resumed. By the Numbers: Tiger Woods has now won five different PGA TOUR events in three different decades (1990s, 2000s & 2010s). Back to Chasing 82

Tom Kim clinches TOUR card with record-tying Sunday at Rocket MortgageTom Kim clinches TOUR card with record-tying Sunday at Rocket Mortgage

All aboard the Tom Kim train. The 20-year-old South Korean (birth name Joohyung Kim) produced a dynamic double in Sunday’s final round at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Not only did Kim match a Detroit GC tournament course record with a 9-under 63, but he acquired enough non-member FedExCup points to clinch his PGA TOUR card for 2022-23. Kim now holds 417 non-member FedExCup points, which would place him No. 97 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List if he were a member. By earning equivalent points to No. 125 after next week’s Wyndham Championship, he will earn his card for next season. There is not a scenario where 29 players could pass him next week. “It means everything,” said Kim of earning a PGA TOUR card for next season. “Every day I’ve played golf, I thought about playing on the PGA TOUR, it was nothing else. It could get a little emotional tonight, but it’s definitely been a dream. It’s been a road.” Kim stood T24 entering the final round in Detroit, knowing a strong finish could allow him to make an appreciative scheduling change and remove the Korn Ferry Tour Finals from his calendar (an alternate avenue to earn his TOUR card next month). He delivered with seven birdies and a hole-out eagle from 126 yards at the par-4 10th, moving safely inside the top 10 on the leaderboard. Kim received a sponsor exemption into the Rocket Mortgage Classic, his eighth TOUR start of the season. He had already earned Special Temporary Membership by surpassing the No. 150 position on last season’s FedExCup via non-member points, with three top-25s highlighted by a solo third at the Genesis Scottish Open earlier this month. As a non-member, Kim will not be exempt into the FedExCup Playoffs unless he wins next week’s Regular Season-ending Wyndham Championship. His showing in Detroit, though, ensures that his non-member FedExCup points will exceed No. 125 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List upon the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship. Kim turned pro in 2018 and has already won twice on the Asian Tour and twice on the Korean Tour. He arrived in Detroit at No. 39 on the Official World Golf Ranking. The kid who adopted the American name Thomas due to his fascination with the television series “Thomas the Tank Engine” is now set to assume well-deserved status as a PGA TOUR member.
