Sleeper Picks: Valspar Championship

Emiliano Grillo (+5000) … This is a good test for anyone with a poor short-term memory. It was just over a week ago when he shared runner-up honors at Harbour Town. If you’ve already forgotten, that’s the kind of thing that happens when the champion (Stewart Cink) runs away to win by four shots. In his previous start, Grillo finished T6 at Corales. He has five top 25s in his last seven starts. The surge is as a consequence of vastly improved putting to pay off world-class ball-striking. Currently T7 on the PGA TOUR in total driving, second in greens in regulation and first in proximity to the hole. That lethal combo has him third in bogey avoidance. And on a course like Copperhead where he can hide a bit as something other than an elite putter, it’s curious why he’s made only one trip (MC, 2015). Patton Kizzire (+12500) … At 25th in the all-around ranking, the 35-year-old often looks like he aligns with most tracks. He’s positioned 18th in greens in regulation and T17 in putts per GIR. He’s also 38th in adjusted scoring and T31 in bogey avoidance. Despite a frequency of failing to put four rounds together, that’s hardly scarce on the PGA TOUR, so there’s nothing about which to complain about three top 10s contributing to a 13-for-16 slate. However – you felt it coming – he has only one top-30 finish in his last eight starts. It happens to be relatively recently at the Valero Texas Open (T9), but he’s not pressured to perform. With par as an acceptable target on most holes at Copperhead, his balanced bag is a net-positive relative to the competition. Erik van Rooyen (+8000) … It’s taken the 31-year-old a minute to find his way and gain some traction. Done and done! As it has so often for other internationals in the past, an impressive showing at the Match Play has ignited something. He survived the Group Stage (for a T9) and has gone on to post another pair of top 20s in San Antonio and New Orleans (with Wyndham Clark). The South African debuted as a PGA TOUR member this season already with a multitude of success abroad, so this current heater isn’t a new experience as he tackles Copperhead for the first time. Keith Mitchell (+15000) … At first glance, he looks to be the focus of converging trends, but his T11 in his only prior trip to Copperhead was in 2017, so the unofficial statute of limitations on what constitutes recent success has elapsed. That said, the experience is better than most alternatives and no one can take it away from him. Much more recently, and relevantly, he returns having connected for a T17 at TPC San Antonio to open April. Last week, he collaborated with Brandt Snedeker for a T4 at TPC Louisiana. After an extended period of time without making noise, Mitchell has the mojo. Adam Schenk (+20000) … It’s all about momentum for the 29-year-old native of Indiana. He’s 132nd in the FedExCup but he recorded his first top-25 finish of the season at the RBC Heritage two weeks ago. A T11 with Tyler Duncan followed at TPC Louisiana. The greens at Copperhead aren’t as tiny as Harbour Town, but they are among the smallest on TOUR. His skill set is average but it’s balanced, so that takes the pressure off any one area, and he ranks 16th in scrambling, so he presents potential in his third appearance. Odds were sourced on Tuesday, April 27 at 5 a.m. ET. For live odds visit betmgm. NOTE: Sleeper is a relative term, so Rob uses unofficial criteria to determine who qualifies. Each of the following usually is determined to be ineligible for this weekly staple: Winners of the tournament on the current host course; winners in the same season; recent major champions; top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking; recent participants of team competitions.

Ancer, Molinari share lead at Quicken Loans NationalAncer, Molinari share lead at Quicken Loans National

POTOMAC, Md. — Tiger Woods ran off four straight birdies and finished the front nine with seven consecutive one-putt greens. Unlike Francesco Molinari and Abraham Ancer, he couldn’t keep it going Saturday in the Quicken Loans National. Ancer and Molinari each handled the scorching heat on the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm and shared the lead going into the final round. Ancer birdied two of his last three holes for the lowest score of his career, an 8-under 62, giving the 27-year-old Mexican his best shot at a first PGA TOUR victory. Ancer has never been in the top 10 going into the final round in 22 previous starts. Molinari also is going for his first official PGA TOUR victory, though that comes with an asterisk. He won a World Golf Championship in Shanghai in 2010, though the PGA TOUR did not recognize the HSBC Champions as an official win until a year later. They were at 13-under 197, two shots clear of Ryan Armour (68) and Zac Blair (66). Woods was six shots behind, the seventh straight tournament he has been at least five shots behind going into the final round. It sure didn’t sound that way, and for most of the round, it didn’t look that way. With his fifth birdie of the front nine, Woods was one shot out of the lead. And then he opened the back nine with a pair of birdie chances just inside 10 feet and missed the both. He never really regained his momentum, finished with another bogey and shot 68. Considering the scoring average was 69.6 in the third round, he wound up losing two shots to the lead. “It was frustrating because I played better than what my score indicates,” Woods said. “I thought that 10 under would have been a good score for me to end up at for the day, and I could have easily gotten that today on the back nine.” He didn’t, and now has more ground to make up. The nine players ahead of him have combined for just five (official) PGA TOUR victories. Molinaro has five European Tour victories, has played on two Ryder Cup teams and is No. 17 in the world. The Italian is playing at the National and plans to be at the John Deere Classic in two weeks, even though the European Tour is in the meat of its summer schedule with national opens in France, Ireland and Scotland leading up to the British Open. Molinari is currently among qualifiers for the Ryder Cup team, but his FedExCup standing is at No. 123. He’s making the most of his first trip to the TPC Potomac. Even though he missed a few short putts on the front nine, he closed with a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th and hit wedge into 5 feet for birdie at the 18th. “It’s where I want to be,” Molinari said, referring more to his position on the leaderboard than in heat approaching 100 degrees. “I would have been happy with even 11 or 12 under. The main thing today was to stay close to the leader, so I’ve done a very good job of that. Tomorrow I just need to go out and do my best, hit as many good shots as possible and see if that would be enough.” Ancer was tied for the lead after the opening round at the Memorial, which is the only other time he has been atop the leaderboard after any round on the PGA TOUR. Conditions have been changing since the opening round with so much sun, no rain and fairways that are getting faster. That was more bothersome to Ancer than the heat. “I grew up in Mexico, in the north part of Mexico where it’s very hot,” he said. “Didn’t bother me. I would rather play in this than cold weather.” The course certainly has everyone’s attention. Woods found that out the hard way with three shots from the rough that sailed some 30 yards over the green, leading to bogeys. “You have to hit it good. There’s no way around it,” Ancer said. Armour shared the 36-hole lead with Beau Hossler and Brian Gay, who both failed to break par. Hossler shot a 71 and was five shots behind, while Gay had a 72. Rickie Fowler, the only player from the top 10 in the world at the TPC Potomac, had a 69 and was eight shots behind.

Tiger Woods makes big move in world ranking, FedExCupTiger Woods makes big move in world ranking, FedExCup

Tiger Woods’ best PGA TOUR finish since 2013 led to large leaps in both the FedExCup and the Official World Golf Ranking. Woods earned 245 FedExCup points after sharing second place with Patrick Reed at the Valspar Championship. They finished one shot behind Paul Casey, who earned his first PGA TOUR win since 2009. Woods jumped 89 spots in the FedExCup, from 132nd to 43rd. He now has 345 FedExCup points. Last season, it took 365 points to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs. Woods has not competed in the FedExCup Playoffs since finishing second in 2013. He is the only two-time winner of the FedExCup (2007, ’09). Woods also moved to No. 149 in the world ranking, his highest position since May 16, 2015. His four rounds at Valspar also gave him enough rounds to be ranked in the PGA TOUR’s statistics. He’s inside the top 30 in three of the four Strokes Gained statistics: Approach-the-Green (19th), Around-the-Green (21st) and Putting (23rd). He ranks 104th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, though he was 14th in that statistic at the Valspar Championship. Casey jumped to eighth in the FedExCup after earning his second PGA TOUR victory. He has finished in the top 15 of the FedExCup in each of the previous three seasons. Justin Thomas, the reigning FedExCup champion, leads this season’s standings with 1,573 points, 259 more than Patton Kizzire. Phil Mickelson, winner of the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship, is third in the FedExCup standings with 1,149 points.
