Rose shoots 66 to take 4-shot lead into Colonial finale

FORT WORTH, Texas — Justin Rose birdied the first three holes to quickly extend his lead at the Fort Worth Invitational and finished with a 4-under 66 on Saturday to take a four-stroke advantage into the final round at Colonial. Rose, the 2013 U.S. Open champion with eight PGA TOUR victories, was 14 under. Emiliano Grillo, his playing partner, shot 69 and was at 10 under with Brooks Koepka, who had a 67. After a two-putt birdie at the opening par 5, Rose had back-to-back birdie putts to get to 13 under. That put him four strokes ahead of Grillo, who had eight pars in a row before consecutive birdies on Nos. 9 and 10. It is the largest 54-hole lead at the Hogan’s Alley since Kenny Perry led by seven in 2005. Rose’s last 54-hole lead came in the 2017 Masters, where the Englishman lost to Sergio Garcia in a playoff.

Making of US Open course: Death, intrigue shadow Erin HillsMaking of US Open course: Death, intrigue shadow Erin Hills

The man who first imagined the grassy Wisconsin cattle farm as a potential piece of the U.S. Open’s hallowed history will see that vision come to life this week. Steve Trattner will be watching on TV from his prison cell, 40 miles away from Erin Hills. Trattner, 55, is the one-time software programmer whose passion for golf led him to call a Milwaukee-area millionaire businessman, Bob Lang. He persuaded Lang to look at the farm on what’s known as the Kettle Moraine, a land formation in east-central Wisconsin shaped thousands of years ago by buried glacial ice. Lang, who had long dreamed of building a golf course, fell in love with the location and bought the territory, but would go on to lose

A running list of custom gear and equipment for the 2019 MastersA running list of custom gear and equipment for the 2019 Masters

Every year for The Masters — due to its rich tradition and iconic green-and-yellow colors in the logo — golf companies design and release custom products in the event’s honor. Instead of singling out specific products, we wanted to highlight as many of the cool products as possible for The 2019 Masters. Below is a list of custom Masters-themed gear and equipment that we’ll continue to add to as products get unveiled to the public. Did we miss anything? Send your submissions to @andrewtursky on Twitter or Instagram. Enjoy! Limited-edition Bettinardi putter While Bettinardi doesn’t advertise the BB1 Copper Classic putter specifically as a Masters-themed putter, its “Spring Seasonâ€ limited release has an obvious Masters influence with the green-and-yellow colorway and special green grip. The special BB1 head model is made from 303 Stainless Steel with a copper, honeycomb-milled face insert, it weighs 355 grams, and it comes with a Lamkin Deep Etched Cord grip. The BB1 Copper Classic is being released on April 9 for $800, and only 250 putters will be available. It also comes with a quilted leather headcover. Jordan 11 Masters shoes These Jordan 11 Masters-inspired golf shoes are part of a Nike “Snake Packâ€ release. The Malbon Golf-collaborative shoes have green snakeskin on the upper, a reflective sole plate equipped with golf spikes, and Malbon’s prayer hands on the tongue colored yellow with hits of green, for obvious reasons. If you look closely, there is also a small red Nike logo on the tongue inside the yellow hands, a nice touch for fans of the Nike logo and brand. As per Jacques Slade’s updated report on Twitter, the Jordan XI shoes will be available on April 12 for $200. Cobra “Camoâ€ driver On the equipment side, Cobra has released a special-edition “Camoâ€ version of its new King F9 Speedback driver. Cobra also reports that Rickie Fowler will use a matching Camo-printed Vessel-collaborative staff bag at The 2019 Masters. The Camo pattern blends the outlines of the United States and the state of Georgia, a shoutout to both the Masters logo and Augusta National’s home state. The Cobra Camo driver, available in 9- and 10.5-degree lofts, comes equipped with a special military-green Project X Even Flow Blue shaft, and a Lamkin Crossline Cobra Connect black grip that also has military-green accents. The driver is currently available for purchase, selling for $499. Swag Golf, a Chicago-based putter company who also makes custom putter covers used by TOUR players including Keegan Bradley, created a special Masters cover with a shoutout to the caddies and their uniforms. Each Swag headcover comes with a different number, and if the headcover purchased matches the winning caddie number for The 2019 Masters, a bigger surprise is in store. G*LF Lids Devereux, a company that makes apparel and accessories for more than just golf, is releasing Masters-themed G*LF and Augusta hats for The Masters. The hats were made in collaboration with New Era, and they’re available for $35 in various colorways — not just green-and-yellow – for a subtler Masters vibe. A bag and covers that cover it all TaylorMade’s custom staff bags and headcovers for The 2019 Masters have it all, with shoutouts to Augusta National’s native flowers, caddie jumpsuits, caddie numbers, and even the yardages of each hole. Scroll to the left on the embedded Instagram post above to see all of the custom Masters gear from TaylorMade. Leather-scented flowers For its 2019 Masters-themed headcovers, Callaway teamed up with Olivia Herrick Design and Seamus Golf. The design features the flowers for which each hole at Augusta National is named, including of course the famous Azalea.
