Rory McIlroy contending, again, at the Memorial Tournament

DUBLIN, Ohio – Rory McIlroy has a great rapport with tournament host Jack Nicklaus, whom he sees all the time at the Bear’s Club in South Florida. They have lunch, and talk golf and life. RELATED: Leaderboard | The Counsel of Jack Nicklaus As for the bond between world No. 8 McIlroy and Muirfield Village, host of this week’s Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, well… “Muirfield and I have had a bit of a complicated relationship,” McIlroy said this week, before opening with scores of 70-69 to reach 5 under par, two behind leader Denny McCarthy (69) as the afternoon wave teed off Friday. “It seemed to fit me quite well earlier in my career and then the last few years, I’ve sort of maybe struggled with the strategy of how to play it.” In 10 starts here, McIlroy has four top-10 finishes, but he also has two missed cuts, plus two other starts in which he made the cut but finished way, way back. He’s never won, or even had a close call. Still, he keeps coming back because it’s the Memorial. Also, he’s not terribly far off – here or anyplace else. McIlroy has finished second (Masters), fifth (Wells Fargo Championship) and eighth (PGA Championship) in his last three starts. And he’s embarking on a busy four-week stretch that will include not just the Memorial but a (2019) title defense, of sorts, at next week’s RBC Canadian Open and the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Boston the week after that. Then he’s off to the Travelers Championship. “I feel like my game is in good shape,” he said. “So I’m excited for this run and excited to give myself a few more chances to hopefully win golf tournaments.” For McIlroy, 14th in the FedExCup and seeking his first win since THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT last fall, Muirfield presents a special challenge, but not an insurmountable one. He can’t swing the driver with impunity, which means finding other ways to shine. “I feel like a lot of the fairways here pinch in around 310,” he said, “so it allows the sort of average hitters to hit driver. For an example, last year I played with Viktor Hovland the first two days, and the first hole, he can hit driver sort of right to where the bottleneck starts. I can’t hit driver because I’ll hit it too far but then I hit 3-wood, you know, 15 or 20 yards short of his driver. So I’m hitting 6-iron or 7-iron in and he’s hitting an 8-iron or a 9-iron in. “It just seems like the length advantage has sort of been nullified here over the last few years,” he continued. “It’s just finding a different way to play the golf course. A lot more 3-woods. I actually went to one of my old 3-woods this week that’s a lower lofted. It’s sort of like a 2-wood in a way which I think will be good to utilize this week.” That strategy seems to be paying off. Case in point, McIlroy hit a 269-yard fairway finder at the par-5 fifth hole Friday, then nuked a 271-yard 3-wood to within roughly six feet of the pin. He made the putt for eagle to reach 6 under par, only to hit his tee shot in the bunker and bogey the par-3 eighth, his second-to-last hole of the day, to leave a slightly bitter taste. “Yeah, another solid day’s play,” McIlroy said. “Couple of silly bogeys. Bogeyed the 11th par-5 and the 14th for the second day in a row. But I guess it sort of happens around here. It’s getting tricky and you’re going to make bogeys regardless of where they come. “Overall, two solid rounds of golf,” he continued, “right in contention going into the weekend, depending what guys do this afternoon. Yeah, happy with how everything is sort of going.”

Jordan Spieth Slam chances dwindle at PGA ChampionshipJordan Spieth Slam chances dwindle at PGA Championship

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Jordan Spieth, who was going for the career Grand Slam at the 103th PGA Championship at Kiawah, shot a third-round 68 to get to even par for the tournament. He rued several missed chances and will likely be too far back to contend for the victory, which would have given him all four men’s major titles – a distinction held by only Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen. RELATED: Full leaderboard | Nine Things to Know: Kiawah Island “You know, I chipped in and made a long par putt on 15, so I can’t really say that it should have been a lot lower,” Spieth said after hitting just nine greens but getting up and down for par eight times. “But this is a round where I’m walking up the 18th going, man, this could have been special today. I had four or five really with no pace on it lip out today. Obviously had a couple go in. “But it felt like one of those really good 6-, 7-under rounds that ended up being 4,” he added. Spieth’s victory at the Valero Texas Open in early April, his first win since 2017, capped off this year’s best comeback story. He was coming off a T9 at the AT&T Byron Nelson last week. Although expectations were high for Kiawah – he came in ranked 26th in the world, eighth in the FedExCup – the 2015 Player of the Year got behind early with rounds of 73-75 and barely made the cut. He failed to birdie either of the front-nine par 5s Saturday, but made over 100 feet of putts. His only bogey came at the notorious par-3 17th hole, where he missed left of the left bunkers and couldn’t get up and down. At even par for the tournament, he was five behind 54-hole leaders Phil Mickelson and Louis Oosthuizen and assuming he would be as many as seven behind by the end of the day. “Very pleased with climbing back to even,” he said. “I hate being over par at a golf course. I mean, it’s like my biggest pet peeve regardless of when it is in the tournament, and I just hate seeing an over-par score next to my name. So it’s nice to be tied with the course with a chance to beat it tomorrow.” As for beating all the other players, he sounded resigned to having to wait another year. “Yeah, if I were at 4-under and the lead was only 7, then things could be different,” he said. “But I’m not.”

Sybi Kuchar fills in after Zach Johnson’s caddie goes down with illnessSybi Kuchar fills in after Zach Johnson’s caddie goes down with illness

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Damon Green, caddie for Zach Johnson, went down with illness after 14 holes and could not continue in the first round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Sybi Kuchar, wife of Johnson’s playing partner Matt (7-under 64), took the bag for the last four, during which Johnson made an eagle and went 2-under to salvage an even-par 71. “He hadn’t been feeling well the last few days, Johnson said of Green. “I’m assuming he was dehydrated, but I don’t know. Matt saw Damon struggling, and I did, too. He didn’t look right. PGA TOUR staff brought him in. I’d like to say it was the first time, but it’s happened like four times at Maui, NORTHERN TRUST at Bethpage, and a couple other places. Green later confirmed he was suffering from dehydration and received an IV. Johnson had a decision to make on who should get the bag when Green exited. Kuchar, who like Johnson lives in St. Simonds Island, Georgia, was happy Sybi could help. “I didn’t talk too much to Damon, but you could tell it was heat fatigue, heat exhaustion, whatever the term is, Matt Kuchar said. “It was really getting the best of him. I knew Sybi was in the crowd, I knew she had caddied for me before and was friendly with Zach Johnson, and figured she would be good to handle it, and Zach would go easy on her. “She knows the deal of keeping up and staying out of the way, Kuchar added, “and I knew Zach would be happy to see a friendly face to take over the bag. Sybi called the situation a first. Billy Horschel, the third player in the group, joked that someone should ask Matt about kissing another player’s caddie on the lips. Kuchar himself worked with a new caddie Thursday. He was a late commit to the tournament, and his usual caddie, John Wood, had planned a reunion that conflicted with Mayakoba. Kuchar gave him the week off and hired a local caddie whose nickname is “Tucan (real name: David). Tucan was on the bag for 32-year-old Mexican Armando Favela as the former Loyola University golfer won a qualifier at El Camaleon to get into the field. (He shot 67 on Thursday.) And now Tucan is on the bag for the early co-leader Kuchar. (Kramer Hickok also came in with 64.) Still, it was the situation with Johnson, Green and Sybi Kuchar that was more unusual. But not unprecedented. “I’ve had friends fill in, I’ve had my brother in law, I’ve had random individuals I don’t know, Johnson said. “I would have called a security guy or a rules official to have somebody brought out, but Sybi has done this before and she’s in great shape, so there you go.
