Ronan Mowrey, 12, sees ‘Most Colorful PGA TOUR Tournament in the World’ through new lens

By and large, Tuesday was a gray day at the Valspar Championship. Under cloudy skies spitting rain off and on all day, the temperature never reached higher than 66 degrees. But, for the PGA TOUR event touted as the “Most Colorful PGA TOUR Tournament in the World, the Valspar Championship still managed to make it a vibrant day. And, a life-changing one. Ronan Mowrey, 12, was born with color vision deficiency. Unlike color blindness, which presents everything in black and white, color vision deficiency doesn’t eliminate color; it makes differentiating between colors problematic. After hearing of an opportunity for a colorblind fan to wear EnChroma glasses at the local PGA TOUR event, Bright Eyes Tampa helped research and find the perfect candidate to surprise at the Valspar Championship. The designated individual and family would enjoy a VIP experience at the Valspar Championship, which included a private behind-the-scenes tour of everything that goes into the bringing the tournament to fruition each year. As fate would have it, Ronan was chosen, and was made aware of much of what the day would entail. Much, but not all. What Ronan didn’t know, though, was that it had been arranged for him to not only meet defending Valspar Championship winner Paul Casey on the 18th tee during a practice round, but to play the daunting par-4 with him. When the last putt dropped, Casey surprised Ronan with a pair of EnChroma glasses, designed to enhance one’s view of colors. The glasses, courtesy of Bright Eyes Tampa, had been customized for Ronan.  “The glasses just changed everything around me, said Ronan. “Everything just popped out. Lighter colors all of a sudden got brighter. I could just see things more vividly. So, that was really cool. Ronan had no prior knowledge of any of the interaction with the defending champion. When he sank his last putt, he realized he had something pretty remarkable to look back on. When Casey presented him with the EnChroma glasses, Ronan had even more to look forward to – in a lot of ways.   “That’s the best experience ever, to be able to hand those glasses over to Ronan and see his face and his reaction to what he is now seeing, and going to be able to see even better, said Casey. “I want to thank Valspar, EnChroma, the doctors and everybody here who gave me this opportunity as well. I thank them for what they’ve done for Ronan, but also for the opportunity to be a part of it. This is exactly the kind of thing that makes the PGA TOUR and everyone associated with it so great. “Paul was really great and really nice, said Ronan. “He showed me how to read the green better and then gave me the glasses. I did not know I was going to get to meet Paul Casey, or that I was going to get to keep the glasses, so this is a really big surprise. I mean, I just started playing golf with him, so that was really cool. How did Ronan play? Quite well – with just a little help from Casey, of course. “Ronan did great, said Casey. “He struck it well off the tee. We helped him a little bit up the 18th fairway. We then gave him his putter to try and replicate a birdie putt someone, hopefully me, will have to win this championship on Sunday. “This is so incredibly wonderful, said Theresa, Ronan’s mother. “This is such a special day for him. It’s incredibly special for all of us, but this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime thing for Ronan. There are three different receptors in the back of the eye, which collect different kinds of colors. In Ronan’s case, one of the receptors does not work properly, making certain colors less distinctive than to those without vision setbacks. EnChroma glasses use technology to filter out the wavelength of light, which, in theory, make the differences between colors more obvious. While they don’t necessarily make the colors as apparent as they are to one with normal vision, they do help make it easier to distinguish one color from another. The glasses produce instant results for some, but for others, it’s a slower, more gradual process to achieve results. Sometimes, it takes the brain more time to absorb the information and then connect with the various colors. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Ronan, his family and the PGA TOUR, said Dr. Beth Knighton, Ronan’s Optometrist at Bright Eyes Vision Care in nearby Westchase. “Everyone is truly getting to benefit from watching this amazing event. “My charity I support is UNICEF and kids, Casey said. “So, if it has anything to do with kids, it’s an automatic ‘yes’ from me. I’m standing here now just trying to imagine the impact that this day, getting these glasses, will have on Ronan’s life. It’s tough to even comprehend what he’s going through. We’re here at the Valspar Championship, which is all about colors. I can see these colors and didn’t even think about something like other people not being able to see or have what I have. It’s something we just think everyone is born with, but they’re not. “Paul is just such a wonderful person, said Theresa. “He was fantastic with Ronan, with the fans. He’s just a great representative of the PGA TOUR. In addition to the EnChroma glasses and surprise with Paul Casey, Ronan also received a complimentary eye exam from Bright Eyes Tampa, as well as five gallons of paint from Valspar to paint his room the color he best sees fit to brighten it with. The mark of a truly great experience isn’t based upon how well the story’s told or what affect that experience had on one person. The best experiences are those which impact many and, because of that, become stories for a lifetime shared forever.   “I’ve just experienced some of the coolest emotions ever in the last 15-20 minutes, said Casey. “This was a life-changing moment for Ronan, but it was also the scene of a significant moment in my career, as well. So, I now have even greater memories of this golf course and the Valspar Championship. “This was incredibly cool Theresa said, “and will be a day Ronan will never forget. Fittingly, the weather report for the Valspar Championship the remainder of the week calls for bright sun under an impeccably-blue sky.

Thomas in vintage form at BMW ChampionshipThomas in vintage form at BMW Championship

MEDINAH, Ill. – It’s all about Justin Thomas now. After coming into the BMW Championship winless this season, 2017 FedExCup champion Thomas scorched Medinah No. 3 with an 11-under-par 61, a new course record, and will go into Sunday’s final round with a six-shot lead over Tony Finau (68) and Patrick Cantlay (68). “I’m just trying to get my lead to seven right now,â€ said Thomas, who won a combined eight times in 2017-18 but has been noticeably absent from the winner’s circle after missing time this season with a wrist injury. “It’s at six. That’s the one thing I’m focused on.â€ This will mark the 10th time Thomas has held or shared the 54-hole lead on the PGA TOUR; he has converted six of nine such leads into victories. Thomas, Finau and Cantlay will play in the last group at 1:20 p.m. ET. Players will go off in threesomes with storms in the forecast. Related: Leaderboard | Projected FedExCup standings | FedExCup update: Spieth, Tiger, Day in danger of missing TOUR Championship For Finau, it will be the second straight day of watching Thomas up-close. “This golf course, when I played here on Tuesday for the first time, I was almost convinced a single digit (score) was going to win,â€ Finau said. “… If you would have told me somebody would shoot 61 this week, I would have told you that’s a joke.â€ He was hardly the only player shaking his head. Thomas birdied six of the first eight holes and eagled the par-5 10th hole. He wasn’t perfect; he bogeyed the sixth. Also, he pulled his wedge shot left of the green at the par-5 14th hole, one of his few bad shots, but chipped in for birdie. Another bad shot: Thomas drove into the water on 15, but after he took a drop he simply got up and down for par from 63 yards. It was that kind of day, and it was about to get even crazier. “I’m five back right now,â€ said Jon Rahm (66), who was marveling at Thomas’ chip-in birdie on 14 as the leader finished up the back nine. “Hopefully JT doesn’t get too far away.â€ Well, so much for that idea. Because in short order, Thomas holed his 180-yard second shot with an 8-iron to eagle the 16th hole, and hit his tee shot to six and a half feet for another birdie on 17. “He was already playing well,â€ said Finau, who authored his own holed out from 119 yards for eagle at the fourth hole. “And that shot on 16 put him over the top from well to really well.â€ With a score of 65 or better, Thomas (65-69-61) would break Marc Leishman’s 72-hole BMW Championship record (261). A victory at the BMW, the penultimate event of the season, brings 2,000 FedExCup points, and Thomas is projected to move from 15th to first in the standings. That’s especially important this year, as it would put him in pole position by two strokes in the new staggered-start format of next week’s TOUR Championship at East Lake. The runaway leader, though, refused to think that far ahead. “I could care less, to be honest,â€ said Thomas, who needed just 22 putts Saturday. “I’m just worried about trying to win this tournament tomorrow.â€ The week began with Thomas calling this an “oddâ€ season so far because of his wrist injury, a bone bruise suffered while hitting a tree at The Honda Classic (T30). He finished T12 at the Masters Tournament, but seemed to re-aggravate the wrist, and opted to take a break. He missed three tournaments, including the PGA Championship – a tournament he had won just two years before – and upon returning to action at the Memorial Tournament Presented by Nationwide, he missed the cut. He also missed the cut at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach but began to climb back at The Open Championship (T11), World Golf Championships – FedEx St. Jude Invitational (T12) and THE NORTHERN TRUST (T12). He huddled with his team, which consists largely of his father/coach, Mike, and caddie, Jimmy Johnson. What was he doing wrong? They all agreed the answer was not much. He was due. After struggling in his warm-up for the first round at the BMW, Thomas shot 65 and proclaimed that he was playing every bit as well as he did in his 2017 FedExCup-winning and Player of the Year season. After his fourth round of 61 or better on TOUR, no one is arguing the point. “I felt good about my game for a while,â€ Thomas said, “and you don’t know when something like this is going to happen, a round like this. We’ve all been talking the last couple of weeks that I’m due to have one and it’s nice when it happens. At the end of the day, this round was great and awesome, but it’s over with and I need to go focus on tomorrow.â€

Willie Mack III builds experience ahead of The Genesis InvitationalWillie Mack III builds experience ahead of The Genesis Invitational

SAN DIEGO - A few days back Willie Mack III was expecting to play Torrey Pines North on Saturday as part of the APGA (Advocates Professional Golf Association) schedule - instead he finished up his Farmers Insurance Open quest there on Friday. Mack III stepped in at the 11th hour for Kamaiu Johnson - his fellow APGA professional - as a sponsors invite into the PGA TOUR event after Johnson tested positive for COVID-19. Thankfully Johnson has only suffered mild symptoms and a scare that saw Johnson's mother rushed to hospital earlier in the week has somewhat abated. Mack acquitted himself well and actually sat 1 under through 14 holes on the tough South Course in Thursday's opening round before dropping three shots late to card a 2-over 74. On Friday, in tough weather conditions, Mack battled his way to a 75 to ultimately miss the cut. But with another start upcoming at The Genesis Invitational via the Charlie Sifford Memorial exemption, Mack III gained plenty of valuable experience at Torrey Pines. "It was exciting. It was a good week. I think I hit four fairways, so other than that, every other part of my game was pretty good," Mack said. "I can’t thank Jeff Dailey, the CEO or Farmers, enough for just letting me and Kamaiu have an opportunity to get out here. It’s our dream to be out here and I can’t wait for the Genesis in three weeks." Johnson will - health permitting - get his first TOUR chance at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in two weeks' time and has also been offered an invite to The Honda Classic. In March 2020, Mack became a Farmers Insurance brand ambassador. He is a former Michigan Amateur champion and was the 2019 APGA Player of the Year, winning two of the seven events he entered. Mack currently leads the Florida Professional Golf Tour and will continue playing their events in addition to a full APGA Tour season in 2021. Removing the financial burden associated with the game is a top priority for both Farmers and the APGA Tour. Ensuring players have access to the tools and support they need allows them to better focus on competing. For players like Johnson and Mack, the support Farmers provides APGA Tour athletes can be invaluable. Mack's exemption was the latest example of Farmers support for the APGA Tour and its players in recent years. The national insurer has provided funding for APGA Tour events and the organization's athletes, sponsored players including Johnson and Mack, and for the second consecutive year will host an APGA Tour event on the North Course on Saturday. The 27-hole contest has an elevated $55,000 purse and begins at 7 a.m. local time. While Johnson and Mack are not in the mix others involved include Mulbe Dillard, a senior at Florida A&M. Dillard debuts at No. 1 in the newly formed APGA Collegiate Ranking created by the PGA TOUR and the APGA Tour aimed to help top Black college golfers' transition to the professional ranks by easing the financial burden of playing developmental tours and Korn Ferry Tour Q-School. Dillard leads the APGA Collegiate Ranking for Black golfers in NCAA Division I, II and III, with the top five seniors each year receiving summer status on the APGA Tour and an exemption into the pre-qualifying stage for Korn Ferry Tour Q-School. Kevin Hall, 37, is deaf and trying to pave the way for both the deaf community and African Americans. He played high school golf for Winton Woods (Ohio) while he attended St. Rita School for the Deaf. He went on to play at Ohio State, where he won the Big Ten Conference individual championship in 2004 by 11 shots and turned pro the following year. Hall has played several PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events over the course of his career and was a former recipient of the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption at The Genesis Invitational. In recent years, he has won three times on the APGA Tour. His father, Percy Hall, caddies and signs for him, and will be joining Kevin at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open Invitational.

Ryder Cup captains Steve Stricker and Padraig Harrington received Sponsor's Exemptions to compete, as did Kamaiu Johnson, who is set to play his second-ever TOUR event. Johnson's inspiring story caught the eye of tournament organizers after he had to withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open due to a positive COVID-19 test... Three of the current top 10 in this season's FedExCup will look to move up the standings, including Viktor Hovland, Harris English, and Max Homa... Other notables in the field include Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Bryson DeChambeau, and Patrick Reed. FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 550 FedExCup points. COURSE: Bay Hill Club & Lodge, par 72, 7,454 yards (yardage subject to change). Originally designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, the course was reimagined by Arnold Palmer, the tournament's namesake. McNealy is in the field this week as a professional while Morikawa finished T9 in 2020. 72-HOLE RECORD: 264, Payne Stewart (1987). 18-HOLE RECORD: 62, Andy Bean (2nd round, 1981), Greg Norman (2nd round, 1984), Adam Scott (1st round, 2014). LAST YEAR: It was blustery and it was brutal, but in the end it was Tyrrell Hatton who emerged on top. Bay Hill was a demanding test in 2020 (Matt Fitzpatrick's Sunday 69 was the only round below 70 on the weekend) but Hatton, despite a double bogey on the par-4 11th Sunday, managed to right the ship with seven straight pars to close out his first PGA TOUR victory (and fifth worldwide). Hatton's 4-under score over the 72 holes was one of just four sub-par totals for the week - the fewest at Bay Hill since 1980. Past Bay Hill winner Marc Leishman finished runner-up at 3-under while Sungjae Im (3rd/-2) and Bryson DeChambeau (4th/-1) were the only other golfers in red figures for the week. Keith Mitchell, Danny Lee, Rory McIlroy, and Joel Dahmen finished T5 at even par. HOW TO FOLLOW Television: Thursday-Friday, 2 p.m.-6 p.m. (Golf Channel).
