Quick look at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans

THE OVERVIEW AVONDALE, La. – Team chemistry is the X factor at this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Whether it’s playing with a good friend, a former college teammate or someone from your home state or country, success in the team format may very well come down to which twosome gels together the best. A year ago, the winners were Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith – a Swede and an Aussie who both live in the Jacksonville, Florida, area and have become good buddies. They beat Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown – lifelong friends from South Carolina – in a playoff that extended to Monday morning. “Obviously, we bonded pretty well last year,â€ Smith said Wednesday on the eve of his team’s defense. “Just being able to give each other a pat on the back or a slap across the face when the time was right. It definitely helped us, I think, just knowing each other so well.â€ Blixt and Smith are not the same age – Blixt, at 34, is 10 years older – but they showed that age commonality was not the biggest factor. Same for Jordan Spieth (age 24) and Ryan Palmer (age 41), who finished solo fourth. Spieth and Palmer have the Texas connection, though, even though they attended arch-rival schools – Texas for Spieth, Texas A&M for Palmer. A Longhorn and an Aggie generally are more confrontational than comforting, but they made it work last year. “We’ve played a lot of practice rounds together going back the last few years, so we know each other’s games,â€ Spieth said. “We have a good time out here.â€ Added Palmer: “I’m not sure how some of these teams are teamed together but definitely knowing this format was going to start, I wanted to play with someone I knew real well and that I was close with. It’s worked out.â€ A big key with friends is never having to apologize for a bad shot. A guilt-free conscience is conducive to lower scores. “We both know we’re not going to get a sorry from one another,â€ said Justin Thomas, who’s playing with Bud Cauley. The two former University of Alabama players tied for fifth a year ago. “Obviously I know he’s not going to try to put me in a bad spot. I don’t think he will too often, so I’m not that worried about it. If I hit one where I’m not aiming, I’ll just kind of give him a shrug and let him do his thing from the trees.â€ Playing with a friend can also make the rounds more enjoyable even for those who aren’t in contention. Jim Furyk and David Duval have combined for 30 PGA TOUR wins and are two of eight players in TOUR history to shoot 59 (with Furyk also shooting a record-low 58). But they are under no illusions this week. Duval has made just 13 starts on TOUR since 2015, and Furyk is making just his seventh start of the season. “We’re probably the rustiest team in the field,â€ Duval said. Still, they plan to have fun. They’ve known each other for a long time, and their wives are good friends. It will be a good week no matter how it plays out on the leaderboard. “You think about folks out there listening, when they go play golf, their idea of golf is hanging out with their buddies, right,â€ Furyk said. “Friends, folks they love playing golf with, enjoy being around. “That’s what this event gives us. Dave and I been friends for a long time. I enjoy his company.â€ And if they surprise some people and contend this weekend, you’ll know why. THREE TEAMS TO PONDER Patrick Reed-Patrick Cantlay Since their T-14 finish here last year, Cantlay won the PGA TOUR event in Las Vegas. We hear Reed also won a tournament. Justin Rose-Henrik Stenson Wonder if they’ll casually display their Olympic medals in the locker room just to intimidate the other teams? Bubba Watson-Matt Kuchar A new team for this year, but they have played together before – the 2014 Ryder Cup, where they lost in Four-balls to the team directly above. THE FLYOVER The closing hole at TPC Louisiana ranked as the most difficult of the four par 5s. The 585-yard 18th played to a stroke average of 4.630 – the first round with Foursomes last year was 4.988, and Four-balls in the second round was 4.313. Water runs down the entire right side of the large fairway. THE LANDING ZONE The 492-yard 12th hole, the longest par 4 at TPC Louisiana, ranked as the most difficult hole last year. The stroke average of 4.076 made it just one of four holes that played over par. Hitting a slight draw is the preferred shot off the tee, requiring a long iron with fade for the approach. Here’s a look at where all tee shots landed last year. WEATHER CHECK From PGA TOUR meteorologist Stewart Williams: “Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible Thursday morning as a cold front sweeps through the area. All of the precipitation should push east by midday, with clearing skies for the afternoon. Another fast-moving system will sweep through Friday afternoon that could produce isolated showers. Otherwise, mainly dry conditions can be expected with partly cloudy skies. High pressure builds over the region this weekend with mostly sunny skies with temperatures warming into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.â€ For the latest weather news from Avondale, Louisiana, check out PGATOUR.COM’s Weather Hub. SOUND CHECK I’m just playing with a better version of me, so it’s fantastic. BY THE NUMBERS 17th – Current Strokes Gained: Putting ranking by Bud Cauley. Last season, he ranked 154th in that category. It’s the second-best improvement in that category on the PGA TOUR this season (Branden Grace has gone from 148th to 5th). 1 – Number of teams in the field in which both players are ranked inside the top 15 in the FedExCup standings. Also number of teams in which both players have won a PGA TOUR event this season. Patrick Reed-Patrick Cantlay fulfill both those descriptions. 3 – Number of teams in which both players have won majors – Justin Rose/Henrik Stenson, Louis Oosthuizen/Charl Schwartzel, Jim Furyk/David Duval SCATTERSHOTS Jordan Spieth tried to sneak in the University of Texas fight song as his team’s walk-up music. Partner Ryan Palmer – who attended Texas A&M – would have none of it. “He got busted,â€ Palmer said. Their first choice is “Drunk Last Nightâ€ by the Eli Young Band. As for the walk-up music for the defending champs? Jonas Blixt thought about tapping into his Swedish roots to choose an ABBA song. “We talked about ABBA, but we don’t know if too many people under the age of 35 knows who they are,â€ Blixt shrugged. So and Cameron Smith went with Levels by Avicii. Justin Thomas and Bud Cauley make a formidable golf duo. They might even be better in another setting – the billiards table. “Unfortunately, this isn’t a pool tournament,â€ Thomas said. “Might like our chances more.â€ Sam Burns (partner with William McGirt) grew up in Louisiana and attended the Zurich Classic a handful of times, once with veteran David Toms. But he had never played TPC Louisiana until this week. “Starting to figure it all out,â€ he said.

Cody Blick recovers stolen Titleist clubs from homeless manCody Blick recovers stolen Titleist clubs from homeless man

Cody Blick set the golf world on fire when he took to social media reporting that his golf clubs had been stolen prior to the final round of Web.com Qualifying School. Then, with a set of pieced together golf clubs, he fired a final-round 63 to qualify for eight guaranteed starts on the Web.com Tour this season. Well, a month later, Blick reported that he found his golf clubs. The story involves a homeless man, a random woman, his mother Carol, his brave college roommate Taylor Bromley, a Venmo exchange for $300, and a bunch of damaged golf clubs. I caught up with Blick to get the whole story. Here is Blick’s tale about how he recovered his stolen set of Titleist golf clubs. Q: So this is an absolutely crazy story. Can you go through exactly how you ended up getting your clubs back? Blick: Yeah, you know, it was probably three days ago now. And honestly, Titleist replaced every club in the bag except the putter, I’m still kind of having trouble with that one. It was from 2012, and I had been using that one ever since. They sent me a couple putters to try out, they tried to match the weight because I had the swing weight and the overall weight in my records. They were close, it just wasn’t the same. Everything was fine. So, at this point I had pretty much just accepted that I wasn’t going to see the putter or my old clubs again. I got a text, I actually got two missed calls from my mom and my dad. And then I saw a text from my mom and it was just pictures of the golf bag. The stitching was ripped out of my first name on the bag. And her comment was just ‘Is this your bag? We might have found it.’ And instantly I just got super excited and called her back. So this woman apparently, in Arizona, was I guess just walking down the street and she ran into this homeless man. I guess his sign said he was looking for money for a hotel room. Her story is that she didn’t want to just give him money, she asked if he had anything to sell. And so she claims that she then was taken back into his tent under the overpass. And there she saw the clubs and she said ‘OK, I’ll give you $75 for the set of golf clubs.’ Not knowing the story or that they were my clubs, just thinking she could resell the golf clubs. She gets home, and my last name ‘Blick’ was stamped into the wedges, and I guess she thought that was the model number. She googled ‘Blick golf clubs’ and up came the story. And so at that point she said she went onto Whitepages to try and get in contact with us. She found my mom’s phone number and gave her a call. So we got in contact with her. Then my college roommate, Taylor, his parents just moved to Arizona in December. So he was out there for New Years. I called him and I was like ‘Hey man, we found the clubs. Can I Venmo you 300 bucks and you meet up with this random woman and get my clubs back for me?’ And so he said ‘Yea.’ So they met in front of some SuperMarket and he checked out the clubs, and they’re pretty beat up, but I’m just happy to get them back. Gave her the $300 and flew home the next day. Then I met him in the parking lot of an In-N-Out burger and got my clubs back. Q: That seems sketchy that a woman would go up to a homeless man with a sign and be like ‘Do you have anything for sale?’ Blick: That’s what I said too, and then the same person would go into his tent, you know? And then that’s kind of reckless of your boy Taylor to meet up with her, no? Blick: Yeah, big time. It was kind of sketchy. I didn’t know who she was or if a bunch of guys were going to show up. You just don’t know. He was for it, so I mean, he went for it. He must have been sketched out. He didn’t really say much about it, but I can’t imagine he was feeling too comfortable leading up to that. Q: Usually you’d bring a friend or some sort of security when you meet up in those kind of circumstances. He just went solo? Blick: Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I didn’t really get any details from him. I just got a text afterwards saying ‘I got your clubs.’ And yeah, I mean he looked at them, and they’re OK. But there’s some pretty bad damage to the bag and the irons are pretty beat up. That’s why we only gave her $300, these things are… it looked like he was just hitting rocks down the sidewalk with these golf clubs. So, it’s fine, but the putter looks OK. I’m still going to go down to Scotty Cameron and have them check out the loft, lie and all that. But it looks alright. So as of now, I might have it in play at the Bahamas and the first couple events here. Q: But for everything else, you’re going to play the new clubs? You can’t play any of the damaged clubs? Blick: No, it’s all pretty beat up. I don’t know what he was really doing with all these golf clubs. But Titleist matched all the specs, everything else was a pretty easy transition. It was pretty much just like getting new clubs. But the putter just hasn’t felt quite right yet. Q: You said you’ve had the putter since 2012. Is that a sentimental club for you? Blick: Yeah, I don’t know what it is about it. I know that it doesn’t fit me. I think it’s a little short and I know the lie angle isn’t right because the toe is always up in the air, but it’s one of those things that I’ve literally used for so long, that it’s almost like that’s all I know. I know that it’s not physically perfect for me, but I’ve used it for so long and I’ve seen so many putts go in over the last 7 years that, it just feels good. Q: So what are you going to do with the damaged clubs? I feel like they almost have to go into the Hall-of-Fame at this point. Blick:: Yeah (laughs), I’m trying to find a display case of some sort. They’re sitting in the garage right now. I disinfected everything. I spent like an hour cleaning these things. I actually got a lot of heat on Instagram. A couple people were commenting that it’s like prejudice to assume that homeless people are dirty and that I have to clean the clubs. That was a little weird, but it’s not like I’m going to not clean used golf clubs. They were in his tent for two-and-a-half weeks or whatever. But yeah, I don’t know. They’re in the garage and I’ll probably put them in a case and probably bring them into the house at some point. This whole thing must have been so weird for you. Has it set in yet how weird this is? Blick: You know honestly, the initial losing the clubs took a while to set in. I played the qualifier, then this whole story kind of blew up, doing all those interviews for like a week straight, and then Christmas came around. It really only hit me how cool it was at the end of December, like almost New Years it was like, OK that was a pretty cool story what happened. And then I get back home and the clubs had been found. It’s hard to understand what’s really going on here. Somebody jacked my clubs and just had them in his tent for three weeks. That’s so crazy. Q: So what do you have coming up? Obviously after all this you have like eight starts now so what’s your plan going forward? Blick: I’m going to play in every Web.com Tour event that I can. My plan after Q-School was to take a week off around Christmas and just kind of hang out with the family. And then I got home and I didn’t have any golf clubs, so I was kind of forced to take some time off there. So I ended up taking like two weeks off, which was actually pretty nice. Starting to get back into it, and starting really to prepare for the first couple events. I’m just going to commit to the Web season, and I’ll probably do U.S. Open qualifying down the road. I learned from Canada, two years ago I ended up skipping an event and ended up missing my Web card by like 490 Canadian dollars. That kind of stung. But it was a lesson learned. So I want to play in as many Web events as I can, because at the end of the year – I guess it’s points, but it was dollars and it doesn’t matter how many events you play in I just have to rack up the points. Q: Do you think you’re going to get some attention from the galleries now because you’re the kid who had his clubs stolen? Blick: I don’t know, I never really thought about that. Yeah, I mean maybe. That would be pretty cool, but I don’t know, I never thought about it. Social media is definitely blowing up. These messages I’m getting from random fans are so cool. It’s like random supporting ‘You got this,’ or ‘it just goes to show how you can be’ and it’s been really really cool. People just coming out of the woodwork really, supporting me and sending me positive notes. Q: Your social media following is probably growing a bunch, too, right? Blick: Oh, big time, yeah. It doubled. Like literally it doubled. Q: Coming out of all this you have an opportunity to eventually work yourself up to the PGA TOUR, right? That’s the goal? Blick: Totally. That week at Q-School, I had an OK first round, a pretty good second round, and the third round had some drama. I noticed a crack in my driver. That was really weird. I salvaged an OK round, but, I was sitting in 75th place Saturday night and I really wasn’t down on myself. I guess in a humble way, I just felt like everything was going to work out, and I was going to have a good Sunday. I really wasn’t worried about it at all. And the clubs got jacked, and I was pretty panicked at first but it was still like, I have a chance here. Yea I don’t have my clubs and I was dealt a pretty crappy hand, but we can still go out on Sunday and put a pretty good number together. But yea I really wasn’t too worried about it. It just goes to show you it doesn’t really matter as long as you’re calm. It’s all good. Q: Maybe with everything going on it kind of took your mind off golf and you just went out and made a bunch of birdies. Blick: Actually, yeah. And luckily my whole team was there. My parents and my coach. And a bunch of friends and family. So they took care of the police report and everything. They were great. It was easier for me to just go out and focus on golf and they dealt with all the legal stuff. Q: Well that’s good all that’s been taken care of, and it’s a New Year. Blick: Like you said, I have a chance at the PGA TOUR, and that’s definitely everybody’s goal. We all want to get to the highest level and we all want to compete against the best, and win against the best. So it’s just one step closer, it’s pretty cool.

Emergency 9: The Open Championship, Round 4Emergency 9: The Open Championship, Round 4

Here are nine tidbits from the final round of the 147th The Open Championship gamers can use tomorrow, this weekend or down the road. Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom plays to Par-71 (36-35) and is hosting for the eighth time. Champion Golfer of the Year Francesco Molinari fired a final-round 69 to post eight-under-par 276 to win The Open Championship by two shots. Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele all shared second place. Molinari’s first major championship was also the first for Italy as he picked up his third win in his last six events worldwide. Even more impressive than his recent run of form, Molinari didn’t make a bogey in his final 37 holes as he tamed the feared Carnoustie on the weekend. He was 74th of 79 players in hitting fairways but still kept squares off his card and he made par-saving putts all day. His winning round included 13 consecutive pars to begin Sunday and finished with his second birdie from five feet on the 72nd hole. Playing with Tiger Woods, it was never going to be easy, but he looked anything but fazed by the situation. He joined Justin Rose as the only two players to post both weekend rounds in the 60’s as he signed for 65-69. The 35-year-old has now rattled off T2, T20, T25 and WIN in his last four majors as he’s in the form of his life. Know Thy Enemy These were the top-10 selected golfers in the PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf game presented by SERVPRO. Not even a pair of firsts in his last five events plus a runner-up finish last week at the John Deere Classic could convince a majority of gamers to stick Molinari into the lineup! Don’t worry, he’ll be in the other three majors for the next five years and The Open Championship until he’s 60. PAIN OR GAIN These were the top-10 selected golfers (plus one) in the PGA TOUR Fantasy One & Done presented by SERVPRO: It was incredible to see five of the top six players in the conversation at some point on Sunday. Molinari should be a popular selection at the PGA Championship at Bellerive next month or the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational before that. Winning for the first time on the PGA TOUR didn’t bother him so I doubt a major championship will cause him to shut it down. … Of the last 12 major champions, 10 have been first-timers. Only Koepka and Spieth have won more than once. Justin Time After making birdie on the last Friday to make the weekend, England’s Justin Rose took full advantage of his second chance. He backed up his 64 on Saturday, the lowest round of the week, with a grandstand finish on Sunday. His 69 included an eagle on No. 14 and taking the clubhouse lead after making birdie on the final hole for the fourth round in a row. His T2 is his best Open Championship finish and is his fifth top-10 in his last five starts worldwide. Return of the McIlroy In his last four Open Championships Rory McIlroy has nearly won them all. His T2 this week adds to T2 (’14), WIN (’15) and T5 last year. It’s not a surprise he heats up this time of year and this week he put all four rounds in the red this week. Sadly he didn’t make anything besides the monster eagle on No. 14 in the last round. Gamers do know when he turns on the class, it’s time to jump on board and they will have MULTIPLE events to use him coming down the stretch. X Marks the Spot If Xander Schauffele (T2) was your entrant in this week for lowest score of Class of 2011, please step up and claim your prize! Playing in the final group with Spieth won’t do anything except enhance his confidence moving forward in his second season on TOUR. His four top-10 paydays this season have come on Riviera, TPC Sawgrass, Shinnecock Hills and Carnoustie. He’s played six majors over the last two years had has three top-six finishes including the best of the bunch from this week. Scar Tissue Kevin Kisner shared the 54-hole lead with Spieth and Schauffele but posted 74 Sunday to share second. Kisner was the solo 54-hole leader last summer at Quail Hollow Club at the PGA Championship and also posted 74. He’s now played from the final group and the penultimate group in two of the last four majors. Remember in 2015 when he lost three playoffs before finally breaking through? This was his first top-10 paycheck since Harbour Town the week after the Masters. Sunday Stunners Tiger Woods led in the final round in a major championship after his first 10 holes on Sunday. He was seven-under before doubling No. 11 and squaring a bogey on No. 12 to knock him out of the top spot. He rallied for a birdie on No. 14 and shared T6 three ways, just enough to get him to No. 50 in the OWGR and into the field at the WGC-Bridgestone in two weeks. He’s won that event eight times and this will be the final year it hosts this or any PGA TOUR event. … Eddie Pepperell was T16 at Erin Hills in 2017, the last major he played before T6 this week. … Kevin Chappell is now working with Sean Foley. I’d say it’s working after picking up his first top 10 (T6) since API in March. … The defending champion, Jordan Spieth, and runner-up, Matt Kuchar, from Royal Birkdale both cashed T9. It’s Spieth’s second top 10 in the majors after solo third at Augusta. It’s Kuchar’s first top 10 since Houston in late March. I didn’t know Carnoustie had such healing powers. I thought it was supposed to be difficult and punishing! … Tony Finau has hit the top 10 in all three majors this season after finishing T9. Study Hall As predicted by many Marcus Kinhult (T61) and Erik Van Rooyen (T17) led the field in fairways with 42 of 60 (70%). … Tommy Fleetwood (T12) and Finau (T9) were Nos. 1 and 2 in GIR. … Molinari was joined by Koepka and Cameron Davis (T39) in circling the most birdies for the week with 17. In 2007 the leader in this category circled 18. … Gary Woodland has never MC in seven Open Championships but only has one top 25 (T12, 2016). … Jason Dufner has now made the weekend in seven straight across the pond. … The 2019 Open Championship will be contested at Royal Portrush. The Barbasol Championship has been fighting weather all weekend and is currently suspended in Round 4. The top 20 players haven’t been on the course yet.
