Quick look at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES

THE OVERVIEW It is said to be high enough to pull the universe, houses the oldest Buddhist temple on Jeju Island, and features five hiking trails. But for players at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES, the inaugural PGA TOUR event in South Korea this week, there’s just one important thing to know about Halla Mountain, which is also known by Hallasan, among its many other names. It affects the way the greens play. “The whole golf course is on this side of the big mountain, sometimes it can look flat but really everything is still going down the mountain,â€ Adam Scott said. “So you just have to be a little bit aware of where down the mountain is. Sometimes it looks flat but it might be faster, sometimes it might be slower because you might be putting back up the mountain. It’s going to play a little part this week.â€ As we were reminded most recently at the Presidents Cup at Liberty National, golf courses can be built on all sorts of land — even an old dump. But if the Nine Bridges course can be readily compared to anything, it might be Kapalua, which hosts the Sentry Tournament of Champions and is also built into the side of a mountain. At its highest, Mount Halla measures 6,400 feet. Some have made it an object of worship, contending that gods and spirits live on it. That’s debatable, but what does live on it is a par-72, 7,196-yard course, with “rolling topographyâ€ (Golf Magazine) and closely mown runoff areas. It is legendary for its views, but even so it’s the challenge of the putting that is getting the most attention. Players have no institutional knowledge of the place, and are learning the lay of the land as fast as they can.    “The greens have a lot of slope on them,â€ FedExCup champion Justin Thomas said. “The greens are very big as well, so the slope can play a big factor and a big role in how you are going to play the course, if you want to use some of the slopes to get close to the holes, or if you want to use some to get into the spot where you want to putt from. But the hardest part is that you just have to play smart. You can’t be too aggressive and short sight yourself or have the putt above the hole.  “You want to try to leave it below the hole and have as many makeable putts with as little break as possible that you can out there.â€ Jason Day wasn’t as worried about the putting as he was everything else. “I actually asked the local caddie if there is a mountain break, and she said, ‘There’s a little bit but not much,’â€ Day said. “Saying that, we are at elevation of, I think Jeju is at the highest 6,000 feet, and I think the golf course is at 2,000 feet. When you have an elevation change of about 2,000 feet from sea level, you probably have zero to five yards in distance change and in how much farther you will hit it. “That’s one thing that we have to tackle this week. There’s a lot of elevation change from tee to green, or second shot into the green, so with that you will have to be wary as well.â€ THREE PLAYERS TO PONDER 1. K.J. Choi: Korea’s most successful male golfer is making his first appearance at Nine Bridges. Expect big galleries. 2. Justin Thomas: The FedExCup champ started his new campaign with a T17 last week. He’s just getting cranked up. 3. Pat Perez: Broke into the world’s top 20 players with last week’s win at the CIMB Classic. Wonder if he’s still celebrating. THE FLYOVER The 353-yard 14th is the shortest par 4 on the back nine and should offer players a chance to drive the green. “It’s possible to have an eagle chance, but there’s some danger to doing that,â€ said Adam Scott. “The right-hand side bunker has severe penalties. It’s always a question of risk and reward. If it’s not too windy and you’re playing well, I think it’s a good opportunity to attack.â€ Justin Thomas is looking forward to it. “That’s a hole that could create a little bit of drama,â€ he said. WEATHER CHECK When the LPGA played at Jeju Island more than a decade ago, the weather was a big factor several years. Cold temperatures and brutal wind made an impact. While wind will likely be a factor this week, it shouldn’t be extreme. PGA TOUR meteorologist Stewart Williams forecasts partly to mostly sunny skies each day. “Temperatures will remain cool, especially in the mornings,â€ reports Williams. “Otherwise, Typhoon Lan is expected to pass just east of Japan on Sunday. This may produce isolated showers and windy conditions across Jeju Sunday afternoon.â€ For the latest weather news from Jeju Island, Korea, check out PGATOUR.COM’s Weather Hub. SOUND CHECK If it’s tough, I could see 8- to 12-under winning. If it’s pretty calm, it could be something around 16- to 20-under. Like I said, I’m pretty bad at that so I wouldn’t go off with what I said. ODDS AND ENDS 1. 17 FAN FAVORITES. Seventeen Koreans are among the 78 players in the field, including reigning THE PLAYERS champion Si Woo Kim, who is sponsored by CJ, this week’s title sponsor. “I always want to do well in any event that I take part in,â€ Kim said. “But this event is a little bit more special for me, so yes, I do feel a little bit more pressure.â€ 2. HE KNOWS JEJU. Graeme McDowell should be worth keeping an eye on this week, particularly because he’s one of the few non-Korean players who have enjoyed success on Jeju Island. McDowell won the European Tour’s Ballentine’s Championship in 2008 at Pinx Golf Club, which is close to Nine Bridges. “Nice to be back in this part of the world,â€ McDowell said. 3. DIFFERENT FEEL. Marc Leishman has playing experience on Korean courses – he was a member of the International Team at the 2015 Presidents Cup outside Seoul – but this is his first look at Nine Bridges. “The course is very good,â€ he said. “It’s different than a lot of other Korean courses I’ve played. It’s a lot more generous off the tee, a lot wider. Greens are very good. It’s important to get it on the right section of the green. It’s a beautiful golf course.â€

‘Full Swing' offers new level of PGA TOUR access‘Full Swing' offers new level of PGA TOUR access

"Full Swing," the Netflix documentary that chronicles the 2022 PGA TOUR season and is set to be released Feb. 15, is a surprisingly emotional watch. Surprising because if you're a golf fan, you know most of what's going to happen, and yet it still hits home with vignettes of fathers and sons, battles won and lost, and sacrifices by friends and family. The emotionality is a credit to the creatives as the series makes great use of home movies, multiple edits, and a strong soundtrack. Episode 1 especially tugs at the heartstrings. "All it takes is one week and your life changes," Justin Thomas says in the series trailer. What the cameras capture off the course ranges from the relatable - Thomas going to CVS seeking relief from his allergies - to the intimate. You see players with their families and pets (redefining the term "WAG"). Viewers ride on private jets, peek inside million-dollar homes and revel in the rowdiness of the 16th hole at the WM Phoenix Open. That's the viewing experience. But what was it like to be in it? "They were everywhere," Tony Finau, a two-time winner last season, said of the crew. "On off-weeks they were home with me. I felt like they did a lot of filming. I knew when I said yes that that was a possibility. I told my wife. She was all-in; she didn't mind it. "It got to a point where it felt like they were just a fly on the wall," he added. "We got to know the crew because it was the same people. They visited Utah, we had a great old time. They ended up being people I'd call friends now. I've got a great relationship with some of them." Jordan Spieth also seemed to be having a great time, as did Thomas. "I didn't really give as much access as a lot of other guys, but I thought it was cool," Spieth said. "For me, it'll be a me-and-Justin kind of episode. They did some stuff at the house here and there a little bit. I thought they were very professional; if I asked for some time away, they were great. If I said, ‘Hey, you should come and see this,' they were ready to go. "I'm interested to watch," Spieth added. "It'll be cool. I think because of how cordial and respectful they were, guys opened up more, which I think will make for good content." Crucially, the series had inside access not just at PGA TOUR events but also the four majors, which are put on by Augusta National Golf Club, the PGA of America, the United States Golf Association, and The R&A. The result: episodes that offer new insights and texture from three of the four major champions, even those, like Thomas, who didn't green-light every single request (Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick also were involved in the series). "My thing was I'm not gonna alter my schedule, my life, the way I go about things," Thomas said. "If they wanted to be a fly on the wall, that was fine, but I'm big on not wanting them to affect how I go about things or the people around me. They did a great job." So did Thomas, who came from seven shots behind to win the PGA Championship at Southern Hills. That gave him his first major title in five years, and was a huge win for "Full Swing," too. "I think it's going to be cool," said Thomas, whose father/coach, Mike, also participated. "We did a couple sit-downs throughout the year. They got me working out." Another victory for the docuseries was its content capture with Fitzpatrick, who was the story of the week going into the U.S. Open at The Country Club - and won. "It was fun, yeah," Fitzpatrick said. "It was different. It took a while to get used to it, to be fair. By the end it was not easy, but it was comfortable. They were everywhere; I gave them pretty good access. I figured if I was going to do it, I was going to be all-in. They were very respectful, not pushy. They were there during the U.S. Open, which was convenient. "I don't know what footage they'll use," added Fitzpatrick, a fan of Netflix's "Stranger Things" and "The Crown." To be fair, as he might say, no one knows what footage they'll use. "Full Swing" was produced by Vox Media Studios and Box To Box Films, which also produced the acclaimed "Formula 1: Drive to Survive." Executive producers are David Check (30 for 30, Four Days in October); Chad Mumm and Mark Olsen for Vox Media Studios; and James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin for Box to Box Films. In addition to the above stars, other players featured include Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Joel Dahmen, Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Joaquin Niemann, Mito Pereira, and, in a relatively late surprise announcement when the trailer was released, FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy. What will make the grade? What will hit the cutting room floor? The makers of "Full Swing" got so much great content they could make a great show out of just the leftovers. Indeed, it's an open question how the editors will weave it all in. What is not in question is whether the players will tune in. "I definitely will watch it," Fitzpatrick said. He laughed. "I'll admit it: I'm nosy about other golfers. I want to know what's going on in their houses."

Tony Finau comes up just short at Waste Management Phoenix OpenTony Finau comes up just short at Waste Management Phoenix Open

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – There was a storybook quality to it all. Tony Finau kept wearing his Kobe Bryant jersey to play the rowdy 16th hole, and kept hitting great shots and gesturing swish with his right hand after the ball dove in the hole. RELATED: Leaderboard | Simpson rallies for sixth TOUR win He hadn’t made the cut in his last four trips to the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, but now he was a Scottsdale resident, having moved here in the off-season. That meant he could be closer to his coach, Boyd Summerhays, and it meant that the entire Finau family could come out and watch him earn his first victory since the 2016 Puerto Rico Open. And it was happening. It was happening. Finau had looked only slightly wobbly and still nursed a one-shot lead over Webb Simpson as he walked to the 18th tee on Sunday. “C’mon, Tony! a fan yelled. “Show the 801! Let’s go! The 801, as in Utah’s area code. Utah, where a winter storm warning was in effect Sunday night into Monday, but Finau no longer lives there in the winter. He’s making some changes. The story, alas, did not have a happy ending. Simpson birdied 18, Finau watched his downhill attempt from 8 1/2 feet slide by on the right, and they were tied. When Simpson birdied the first playoff hole, also the 18th, from a similar line to the one he’d seen in regulation, it was over. Finau took it well, congratulating Simpson for his two birdies on 18 in a span of 20 minutes, but there was no mistaking how much this one hurt. The choked sobs of Finau’s oldest boy, 8, who was waiting greenside with two of his siblings and his mother, said it all. A two-shot lead with three to go had evaporated, and the playoff had ended quickly and mercilessly. “He got the upper hand this time, Finau said, “but I love that guy, and that’s one hell of a finish. If you’re going to birdie 18 a couple of times, you’re probably going to win. True, the runner-up hadn’t lost it, as Finau did nothing more egregious than make a handful of pars coming in. He just couldn’t convert short birdie tries on 15 and 18 that would’ve sealed it. “I had some looks to win the golf tournament and they didn’t go my way today, he said. Simpson and Finau are Presidents Cup teammates, and they are friends. Although the winner was pleased to earn the trophy after four runner-up finishes since last summer, it hurt him just a little that the player he beat was Finau. For everyone else, it was a reminder that sometimes golf is cruel. “Yeah, it’s hard, Simpson said. “I actually thought about that out there. He’s one of my good friends on TOUR. We’ve talked about playing together in team events as partners. I’m comfortable with him. I love his caddie, Greg. And so that part’s hard. “I mean, we’re after the same thing, he added. Finau had nothing to feel bad about, Simpson continued, after making clutch birdies on 12 and 13. He hit great shots coming in, he’s a world-class player, he will be around for a long time. True. All of it. “I had a great chance to win this week, Finau said. “Unfortunately, it didn’t happen, but my game’s better than it’s ever been. I have more confidence than I’ve ever had. And again, if you know anything about me, I’ll persevere through anything. Whether you want to call this a stumbling block or a learning experience, Finau said, he remains intent on victory No. 2. “I’ll knock it off soon, he said, “and will be on my way.
