Q&A on Golf and Giving Back with Alice Milligan, Morgan Stanley’s Chief Marketing Officer

PGATOUR.COM: This year marks the sixth year of the Morgan Stanley Eagles for Impact Challenge – can you tell us a little more about this initiative and First Tee, your new charitable partner? Alice Milligan: Morgan Stanley has a longstanding commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and providing the next generation of diverse youth with the tools they need to succeed. When we became a Proud Partner of THE PLAYERS, we developed the Eagles for Impact Challenge which has allowed us to celebrate great golf shots while giving back. Inspired by Morgan Stanley’s Institute for Inclusion – which was launched in June of 2020 to accelerate an integrated diversity, equity and inclusion strategy driving change within our firm and beyond – we have focused our Eagles for Impact initiative on increasing representation through access and education. The Eagles for Impact initiative now lives within our broader campaign platform, Everyone Deserves a Shot. The campaign strategy is centered on the idea that a more inclusive and representative society starts with increasing education opportunities and opening doors for the next generation. This year, we have teamed up with First Tee, a youth development organization that shares our goal of growing access to the game. PGATOUR.COM: Given the new focus of Eagles for Impact, can you share details about the program and how your donations will support First Tee’s mission? Alice Milligan: For every eagle made throughout the tournament, Morgan Stanley will donate to First Tee to help support the recruitment, development and retention of diverse coaches. These dollars will directly support First Tee in providing continued training for diverse coaches so all participants can see and learn from representative role models. Coaches are the backbone of First Tee programming – they help create character-building experiences to prepare kids for any challenges they may face, and First Tee continues to make it a priority for their coaches to represent all current and future participants. To date, Morgan Stanley has donated over $1.2 million through the Eagles for Impact program. We’re looking forward to counting eagles again this year to further our impact. PGATOUR.COM: Are there any on-site events this year that you’re particularly excited about? Alice Milligan: Yes, Morgan Stanley will host a special event at THE PLAYERS on Tuesday, March 8th with First Tee. During the event, we will host 20 young women from First Tee-North Florida, where they’ll have the opportunity to hear from a variety of industry experts on their career journeys, walk the TPC Sawgrass course and view the practice rounds. Their final stop will be at the Morgan Stanley Eagles for Impact venue, where they’ll be the first to play three special putting greens they helped us design for fans to enjoy during the tournament and pick up exclusive Morgan Stanley swag. PGATOUR.COM: Can you tell us a little more about the firm’s broader efforts in the diversity and inclusion space? Alice Milligan: Commit to diversity and inclusion is the firm’s fifth core value – it is a key area of focus for our employees and our clients. Most recently, Morgan Stanley announced the Institute for Inclusion’s Equity in Education and Career Consortium. In collaboration with partner organizations, this initiative will support high school and college students to achieve stronger career and financial outcomes. Funded by an initial commitment of $20 million, EECC helps address systemic inequities in education and career outcomes for young adults from low-to-moderate income backgrounds with a focus on ethnically diverse students. Other key initiatives include the HBCU Scholars Program, which provides 60 four-year full ride scholarships at Howard Harvard, Morehouse College and Spelman College, over a 5-year period. In 2021, the Firm announced the first cohort of 12 students selected for the scholarship at each school and we’ll be announcing our second cohort this summer. Finally, The JumpStart Initiative, which was created in partnership with LEAD (Lead, Education and Development), a non-profit that works with high-potential youth from diverse backgrounds, develop their professional knowledge, find mentors and gain access to educational resources that might otherwise be out of reach.

Lightning puts damper on first round of Zurich Classic of New OrleansLightning puts damper on first round of Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Lightning in the area will prevent the first round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans from being completed on Thursday. Play in the Fourballs first-round format was suspended at 10:41 a.m. ET due to heavy rains and lightning. Tournament officials were hoping to resume play in the early afternoon but more lightning and rain in the forecast pushed back those plans. Play isn’t expected to resume until at least 5:30 p.m ET, if at all. Half of the 80-man teams have started their first rounds, with just two teams having completed as many as 10 holes. Even if play resumes in the late afternoon, it’s doubtful teams with afternoon tee times will even begin their rounds. Sunset is at 8:34 p.m ET. “We’re going to play as much golf as we can today and finish up what we have to tomorrow, said PGA TOUR rules official Gary Young of the first round. “Hopefully not into Saturday. But I think we’ll have enough time to get it done by tomorrow. The team of Joel Dahmen-Brandon Harkins had the lead at 6-under through nine holes when play was suspended. Once the first round is completed, teams will then switch to the Foursomes format for the second round. With less shots being struck, the pace of play will speed up. After the cut to 35 teams and ties, the third round will revert back to Four-balls, then Foursomes again for the final round. Young doesn’t anticipate many adjustments in course set-up due to the weather. “You can be a little bit more aggressive with the set-up of the golf course certainly on this Four-ball format, and then when we get to the Foursomes where it’s alternate shot, maybe not as aggressive, Young said. The sand-capped fairways at TPC Louisiana allow for adequate drainage, leaving the bunkers as the big issue to get the course in playing shape. “The biggest challenge we have ahead of us are the bunkers on the golf course, Young said. “They’re pretty much full of water right now.

New Titleist utility irons, hybrids spotted at the Memorial TournamentNew Titleist utility irons, hybrids spotted at the Memorial Tournament

DUBLIN, Ohio – Titleist has begun its TOUR validation process at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Typically, Titleist brings new product out to PGA TOUR ranges and courses for feedback from the professionals before launching them to retail. That is exactly the case with Titleist’s new utility products, including U500 and U510 driving irons, and TS2 and TS3 hybrids. While Titleist isn’t speaking on the new designs just yet, we can speculate on a few things from the photos taken by PGATOUR.COM on Monday. Firstly, Titleist seems to be establishing cohesiveness between its hybrids and its metalwoods by giving them the familiar “TSâ€ name. In the past, Titleist gave its hybrids different nomenclature — such as the 818 H1 and H2 hybrids — than its drivers and fairways woods. Now, it seems they are fitting right into the TS family. The TS2 looks to be a more forgiving option given it’s larger profile at address, and the sleeker TS3 – likely a lower-spinning or lower-launching product – appears to have a weight port in the toe. Also, with its U500 and U510 irons, Titleist appears to be separating out utility irons from a full set of irons; this is reminiscent of its popular 712U iron of the past. In the past few years, Titleist staffers have used T-MB irons as their driving irons, but those weren’t necessarily specifically made to be driving irons since T-MB irons were offered as a full set to the public. Now, it seems the U500 and U510 irons will stand alone as driving irons. Relatively speaking, it appears the U500 has a sleeker profile than the U510, which offers a larger profile and wider sole; this could mean the U500 is lower launching and the U510 is higher launching and/or more forgiving. Based on media photos provided by Titleist above, it appears that the Project X HZRDUS Smoke shaft will be the stock offering for the new utility clubs should they hit retail in the future. As we await the possible retail release of these products, and more information from Titleist about their designs, check out the photos below taken by PGATOUR.COM on Monday.
