Presidents Cup: Day 1 match recaps

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The U.S. leads the International team by 3-1/2 to 1-1/2 points after Thursday’s opening day of the Presidents Cup. Here’s a look at each of the five Foursomes matches. MATCH 1: USA wins, 6 and 4 Rickie Fowler/Justin Thomas (U.S.) def. Hideki Matsuyama/Charl Schwartzel (International) Holes won: USA 9, Internationals 2 Holes led: USA 11, Internationals 1 Recap: The Internationals took the early lead when the U.S. conceded the second hole, having found trouble with Justin Thomas’ errant tee shot. After that? It was all America. The momentum switched when Fowler chipped in from 72 feet for birdie to win the third hole. Thomas then drained a 12-foot birdie to win the fourth, and the Internationals bogeyed the fifth. All the sudden, the U.S. was 2 up and kept the pressure on. The Internationals struggled, shooting 5 over on the front side. A double-bogey at No. 7 and a bogey at No. 9 put the Internationals 5 down at the turn. Schwartzel rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt to win the 10th, but the Americans responded by winning the next two holes, Thomas rolliing in a couple of birdie putts inside 10 feet. QUOTES Rickie Fowler (on his chip-in): “That was definitely a big turn of events. I feel like we were definitely on the better side of the hole when it comes to missing that green … That was kind of our whole goal going into the day was to manage our way around and put ourselves in the right spots. Felt like we did a good job of that.” Justin Thomas (on Fowler’s chip-in): “It definitely got the round going a little bit and got the momentum going our way. But we played some unbelievable golf after that, too.” Charl Schwartzel: “There was a few key moments where things changed. One was on the fourth hole. Their ball, Rickie and Justin’s ball pitched about a foot over the bunker. It looked like we might actually win that hole; end up losing it. I hit a bad shot on 7 in the water. And then you give Rickie and Justin, which are both unbelievable players, playing good golf now, you give them just a little bit of momentum, they are hard to catch.” Hideki Matsuyama: “”We really didn’t get into our game today. Just the rhythm just wasn’t there.” MATCH 2: USA wins, 1 up Dustin Johnson/Matt Kuchar (U.S.) def. Adam Scott/Jhonattan Vegas (International) Holes won: U.S. 5, Internationals 4 Holes led: U.S. 3, Internationals 6 Recap: A solid performance by both sides, who were all square through 15 holes. At the par-3 16th, Johnson’s tee shot finished seven feet from the pin to set up Kuchar’s birdie putt, while the Internationals bogeyed the hole. That gave the U.S. team its first lead of the match, and they held on from there, playing bogey-free golf for the entire match. QUOTES Matt Kuchar: “We were bogey-free today, which is amazing. In alternate-shot, in these conditions, not to make a bogey and for us to just win 1 up, that’s a heck of a battle that we had with those guys. They played some really good golf and I have a heck of a partner to ride.” Dustin Johnson: “I thought we played really, really solid. Never really got out of position. Didn’t make any bogeys. We just, you know, kept the ball in play.” MATCH 3: USA wins, 5 and 4 Patrick Reed/Jordan Spieth (U.S.) def. Si Woo Kim/Emiliano Grillo (Internationals) Holes won: U.S. 8, International 3 Holes led: U.S. 12, International 0 Recap: Spieth and Reed continued to dominate as teammates, easily defeating two Presidents Cup rookies in Thursday’s foursomes play. Spieth and Reed are now 6-1-2 overall as a team, and 2-0 in the Presidents Cup. Spieth moved to 4-0 in Presidents Cup Foursomes. The American duo never trailed Thursday, winning the par-5 second hole after Kim hit the Internationals’ second shot in the water. Spieth and Reed won Nos. 4-7 to take control of the match. The Internationals looked to be in good shape to win the 11th, but Spieth made a 33-footer and the Internationals bogeyed. Overall, the Americans shot even-par in Thursday’s windy conditions, making three birdies and three bogeys. QUOTES Jordan Spieth: “Other than the flip on 11, this was a pretty boring day for us, but boring is what we needed today. We really only hit, I want to say, two shots that we shouldn’t hit today. We both had an iron shot that we’d like over again.” Patrick Reed: “When it’s windy like this, with how comfortable we are around the greens and on the greens, it just seemed like if we got ourselves in a bad spot we were able it figure out how to get it up-and-down and save par.” MATCH 4: International wins, 3 and 1 Branden Grace/Louis Oosthuizen (Internationals) def. Daniel Berger/Brooks Koepka (U.S.) Holes won: Internationals 6, U.S. 3 Holes led: Internationals 7, U.S. 2 Recap: The South Africans remain perfect, winning three of the last five holes to break open a tight match that had been all square through 12 holes. Two years ago, Grace and Oosthuizen won all four of their matches in South Korea, and delivered yet again for Nick Price. Oosthuizen made a 19-foot birdie putt to win the 13th and grab the lead. The Americans, long-time friends and former Florida State teammates, lost the 15th with a bogey after Koepka found trouble off the tee. The Internationals closed it out with an 11-foot birdie from Oosthuizen. QUOTES Louis Oosthuizen: “In the middle, a few holes, we didn’t hit very good shots but we knew it was going to be a grind all day. Then we started really flushing the ball and really giving ourselves putts for birdies and making pars. In these conditions today, par on some holes is good enough to win.” Branden Grace: “It was nice to hit clutch shots when it mattered. We putted great. His speed was spot on. Down the stretch, we had a couple of long putts when we needed to just put pressure on the guys and did exactly that.” Brooks Koepka: “Just didn’t give ourselves any chances on the back side. We didn’t give ourselves enough chances for birdie and you have to be able to do that, especially as windy as it is today.” Daniel Berger: “We had a few stretch of holes where we lost it a little bit but Brooks played really well. I think I could have played a little bit better, and if that was the case, we may have come out with the win.” MATCH 5: Halved Jason Day/Marc Leishman (Internationals) halve with Phil Mickelson/Kevin Kisner (U.S.) Holes won: U.S. 6, Internationals 6 Holes led: U.S. 9, Internationals 4 Recap: After clawing back into the match and holding the lead through 16 holes, the Internationals could not hang on for a much-needed win. But at least they salvaged a half-point. Day missed a 20-foot par putt on the final hole, giving Mickelson a chance to win the match with a 6-1/2 foot putt, but he missed too. The Americans got off to a quick start and were 3 up through six holes. But the Internationals won four straight holes to take the lead, relying on an eagle, two birdies and a par. The Americans squared the match with a par on the 12th before a nice approach by Leishman set up Day for a birdie at the 14th.  QUOTES Phil Mickelson: “It was interesting. We played some good golf. We were 4-under through 10 in some difficult conditions and we were only 1 up. They had a stretch there where they won four holes and it was just back and forth. It’s too bad we both bogeyed the last hole because we had some good going today.” Kevin Kisner (on Mickelson): “He was my partner in my first Presidents Cup match, something I’ll always remember. He was the epitome of class and partner, and I just can’t thank him enough. He carried me around all day.” Jason Day: “They had us down a lot early in the round and then Leish had a great chip-in on 9 and got us going again. Spread that momentum our way, and you know, obviously the last few holes wasn’t the way we wanted to finish, but with that said, any point is like moving forward even if it’s a half a point.” Marc Leishman: “That’s about as intense as it gets. You have all your teammates there and all the American guys, and the match is on the line.”

Jason Day eyes 12th TOUR victoryJason Day eyes 12th TOUR victory

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jason Day may be known for his ability to launch golf balls into orbit, but it’s his performance with the shortest clubs that has him most excited about his game. Day is line to earn his second PGA TOUR win of the season after shooting 67 on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Championship. He made birdie on five of his final 10 holes Saturday to finish 54 holes at 10-under 203 (69-67-67). He’s two strokes ahead of Nick Watney, who’s seeking his first win since 2012. Day has made just three bogeys, the second-fewest in the field, at a demanding Quail Hollow layout despite ranking 52nd in greens in regulation (33 of 54, 61 percent). He leads the field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green and is 11th in Strokes Gained: Putting. He’s also perfect out of the sand this week, getting up-and-down all 12 times he’s been in a bunker. “It gives you all the confidence in the world sometimes,â€ Day said about his short game. “It doesn’t matter how bad you hit it, you know that in the back of your mind that you’re going to walk off with par.” “I’d much rather have a great short game than be the best ball-striker on the planet.â€ Day leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting this season (+1.386), just as he did during his three-win season of 2016. He fell to 39th in the statistic last season. This is just Day’s third appearance in this event, but he fell in love with the course at last year’s PGA Championship, where he finished ninth despite a quadruple-bogey on the 54th hole. Day loves hard courses, and his short game can help him grind out pars on such tracks. That aspect of his game has been especially important this week as he continues to break in a new set of irons. He won this year’s Farmers Insurance Open with his old set, but switched to new irons at Augusta National because he felt like they were causing his shots to fly too high and with too much spin. He is using a mixed set with TaylorMade’s P790s in the long irons and P730s in the mid- and short-irons. Day also said his desire has returned after going winless last season. He had won nine times in the previous three seasons and reached No. 1 in the world ranking, but the demands of his lofty position in the game and his mother’s cancer diagnosis, led to burn-out. A win would lift Day as high as No. 2 in the FedExCup standings entering THE PLAYERS Championship, which he won two years ago. He’s currently 16th in the standings after his win at Torrey Pines and runner-up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. His 22nd-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard is his worst finish in six individual stroke-play events this season. “If you get up and you kind of don’t really want it and don’t have the motivation to improve and get better as a person and as a player, then it’s a real struggle to come out and beat the best players in the world,â€ Day said. “This year I’ve kind of recommitted myself to try to get back to No. 1.â€ WOODS BREAKS PAR Tiger Woods shot 68 on Saturday, his first sub-par round of the week. He will enter the final round in 31st place, nine shots behind Jason Day. Woods made six birdies, but also had three bogeys, including a three-putt on the 18th green. He still gained strokes on the green (+0.55) for the first time this week. “My ball-striking’s been fine. I just haven’t made anything,â€ Woods said as his first PLAYERS Championship since 2015 approaches. He won at TPC Sawgrass in both 2001 and 2013. WISE’S WILD RIDE Aaron Wise made an important save on Saturday’s final hole to keep himself in contention. The rookie chipped in for bogey on 18 after whiffing a ball inside the hazard left of the 18th green. He can be grateful that his bogey wasn’t a bigger number. He shot 70 while playing alongside Peter Malnati in the final group and will start the final round in a four-way tie for third at 7 under par, three shots behind Day. Wise pulled his approach shot to the final green. The ball was on grass, but also inside the hazard line drawn around the creek that runs down the hole’s left side. He was unable to ground his club before attempting his shot from a steep downhill lie. He slid under the ball on his first try. The next one landed on the green, but rolled to the back fringe. He holed his 40-foot chip shot to avert further disaster. NOTABLES Peter Uihlein, who’s playing his first season as a PGA TOUR member, shot 62 to jump 45 spots and into a tie for third place. He’ll start the final round three shots behind Jason Day. Uihlein’s score is the lowest at Quail Hollow since it underwent renovations for last year’s PGA Championship. Click here to read more about his round. Like Uihlein, Phil Mickelson also shot a low round early Saturday after shooting back-to-back 72s. Mickelson made five birdies and an eagle (at the par-5 10th) to shoot his lowest score since a final-round 64 at last year’s Greenbrier Classic. Those are his lowest two scores since his 63 at Royal Troon in the first round of the 2016 Open Championship. “I felt very unfocused the first two days,â€ Mickelson said Saturday. “I didn’t feel like I was really committed to the shots. I didn’t have great focus. I don’t know how else to say it.â€ Mickelson, winner of THE PLAYERS in 2007, is fourth in the FedExCup. He will start Sunday in 10th place, five shots behind Day. Rory McIlroy made a 10-stroke improvement from Friday to Saturday, shooting a 5-under 66 in the third round to move up to T16 entering the final round. The 2016 FedExCup champion still sounded like he was wary about the state of his game, though. “I’m just not that comfortable with anything right now,â€ said McIlroy, who ranks 32nd in the FedExCup. Bryson DeChambeau was 5 over par after the first 21 holes of the Wells Fargo Championship, including a triple-bogey on his third hole. He played the next 33 holes in 12 under par, making 11 birdies, one eagle and one bogey, and now sits in third place. He’s 22nd in the FedExCup after finishing in the top three in two of his past three starts (2nd, Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard; T3, RBC Heritage). He will start Sunday three shots off the lead. SUPERLATIVES Longest drive: Bryson DeChambeau and Tom Lovelady both hit 369-yard drives on the par-5 15th holes. DeChambeau made par, while Lovelady made birdie as part of his 72. He’s in 66th place. Longest putt: Michael Thompson holed a 62-foot putt for birdie on the par-3 13th hole as part of his third-round 69. He is in 16th place at 3 under par, seven shots behind Day. Lowest round: Peter Uihlein shot a bogey-free 62 after making seven birdies and an eagle. Starting at No. 4, he played a six-hole stretch in 7 under par. He eagled the par-5 10th hole and made birdies at 14 and 15 before making par on the final three holes. Easiest hole: The 301-yard, par-4 14th hole played to a 3.51 scoring average. There were two eagles and 45 birdies on the hole. Only six players made bogey. Hardest hole: The 494-yard, par-4 finishing hole played to a 4.26 scoring average. There were just six birdies on the hole Saturday. CALL OF THE DAY For play-by-play coverage of Round 4 of the Wells Fargo Championship, listen from 1-6 p.m. ET on PGATOUR.com.

Monday Qualifiers: OHL Classic at MayakobaMonday Qualifiers: OHL Classic at Mayakoba

The son of a legend, another young gun and a wily old veteran celebrating a milestone are among the Monday qualifiers for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Fresh on the heels of a former amateur standout Patrick Cantlay winning on the PGA TOUR another has given himself a chance at hitting the jackpot. Former U.S. Amateur Public Links champion and low amateur at the 2015 Open Championship Jordan Niebrugge shot 66 at the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Course to take medalist honors and will now line up at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa Del Carmen. The 24-year-old will play his 12th PGA TOUR event, his ninth as a professional this week. He’s made just three cuts in his previous 11 cracks at the big time, although one of those was an impressive T6 at St Andrews in the 2015 Open Championship. A quarter of his starts have come in majors as he’s also played the Masters in 2014 (MC), the Open Championship again in 2016 (MC) and the U.S. Open in 2017 (T35). The next two spots went to a pair of TOUR veterans with New Zealand’s Tim Wilkinson and American Ken Duke shooting 67 while the final spot went to Sean Jacklin after his 68. Duke, the 2013 Travelers Championship winner, will play his 300th TOUR event this week. The 48-year-old’s milestone week is his third start this season after missing the cut at the Safeway Open and Sanderson Farms Championship. Duke has 25 career Top-10s. He had 26 starts last season but finished 193rd in the FedExCup. Wilkinson has played in 158 TOUR events, including 22 last season where he finished 158th in the FedExCup standings. The 39-year-old has eight career top-10s on TOUR with his best finish being a T2 at the 2008 Valero Texas Open. Jacklin is the son of former English star Tony and although he has lived most of his life in the USA he plays under the country of his birth – Scotland.  After plying his trade in various places around the globe, including PGA TOUR – Latino America, the 25-year-old now gets the chance to make his PGA TOUR debut.
