Power Rankings: A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier

Ready or not, here it comes! A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier launches the 2019-20 PGA TOUR season. The first of 49 tournaments sat out last season to accommodate the shift of the FedExCup Playoffs to August. This is the ninth edition of the tournament, all of which have been contested at The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. There are only nine days between the conclusion of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals and the first round at Greenbrier. While some graduates may be weary after long seasons and the pressure of the series, all should be encouraged that numerous golfers just like them over the years have sustained form when the light turns green on the PGA TOUR. As of midday Monday, all 50 are committed to the tournament, including all 21 rookies. For what the entire field of 156 is getting in The Old White TPC and more, scroll past the projected contenders. Tuesday’s Fantasy Insider will include Jimmy Walker, Scott Piercy, Cameron Smith, Byeong Hun An and Doc Redman among other notables. No matter one’s position in the overall pecking order, The Old White TPC is a proper opener. It’s fair and fun. Checking in as a par 70 with both par 5s on the inward side (Nos. 12 and 17), the course is one of the longest of its kind at 7,292 yards. For the record, that reflects an increase of six yards from the 2018 edition, and 15 holes are listed at a different yardage this week, but none more than the reduction of nine yards at the 484-yard, par-4 11th. The Old White TPC also boasts the only par-3 finisher on the PGA TOUR. Defending champion Kevin Na parred the 179-yard 18th hole in all four rounds last time, but he could afford to, having prevailed by five strokes at 19-under 261. That’s the second-lowest aggregate since Stuart Appleby’s 22-under 258 in the inaugural edition of 2010 and before the course was fitted with some teeth. Na’s path to the title was unconventional, but it proved the worth of the equity of the track. Hitting greens and sinking putts is the standard objective on a scorable course with average-sized greens (6,500 square feet of bentgrass) rolling upwards of 11-and-a-half feet on the Stimpmeter. However, of the 10 golfers who finished inside the top 10 of the 2018 edition of A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, Na tied for hitting the fewest (53). His percentage (73.61) was nearly three clicks higher than the field average, but in a shootout, that puts pressure on the short game and putter. On cue, Na finished second in both Strokes Gained: Putting and scrambling, and he led the field converting GIR into par breakers with the flat stick. He also paced it in par-4 scoring, which is to say that he capitalized on an occasional weakness of the course. The set of 12 par 4s never plays harder than TOUR average, but the field scored just 3.97 on them in 2018, fourth-easiest of 51 courses all season. The absence of impactful wind will contribute to another good week of scoring, but looming rain and boomers figure to challenge the more inexperienced touring professionals who aren’t as familiar with stopping and starting on this stage. Warm, juicy air with daytime highs in the mid-to-high 80s will remind everyone that the autumnal equinox still is a couple of weeks out in the Northern Hemisphere. Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman win Zurich Classic of New OrleansCameron Smith and Marc Leishman win Zurich Classic of New Orleans

AVONDALE, La. — Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman outlasted Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in a playoff that capped a tight and tense final round Sunday. RELATED: Leaderboard | Winner’s Bag: Marc Leishman/Cameron Smith, Zurich Classic of New Orleans Smith and Leishman won with a par on their second trip up the par-5 18th after Oosthuizen pushed his tee shot into the water and narrowly missed an 11-foot putt for bogey. The Australians forced the playoff by shooting a 2-under 70 in alternate-shot play at the PGA TOUR’s lone regular-season team event. Oosthuizen and Schwartzel began the round with a one-stroke lead, but shot a 71 with three pars and two bogeys. It’s Smith’s third career victory — second at the Zurich team event — and best result since tying for second at the pandemic-delayed 2020 Masters last November. It also was his sixth top 10 since the current TOUR season started last October. Smith’s last victory came at the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii. It was Leishman’s sixth career victory, his best result since tying for fifth at the Masters this month and his first win since the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open. The climactic finish capped off a compelling duel between two teams that teed off together in the final grouping and took turns holding leads that never grew to more than two strokes. After Smith made birdie putts of 9 feet on the par-5 seventh and 7 feet on the par-3 ninth to pull his team even atop the leaderboard, the Aussies went in front on 10, when Schwartzel’s approach found the bunker and his team two-putted for bogey. Smith and Leishman took a two-shot lead with a birdie on the par-5 11th, where Leishman drove 307 yards into the fairway and Smith sent the team’s second shot 265 yards to the green, setting up a birdie. But they gave a stroke back on 13 when Leishman’s drive went into the TPC Louisiana’s trademark, towering and old-growth cypress three that stands alone like a monolith in the fairway. That forced the team to take a drop that led to a bogey. The South Africans moved back into the lead on 15, where Schwartzel followed up Oosthuizen’s 205-yard approach shot with a nearly 15-foot putt for birdie, while Smith, whose approach had fallen short of the green, narrowly missed a 13-foot putt for par. Smith then bounced his booming, 294-yard tee shot on 16 into the water, but it went out of bounds close enough to the green that Leishman was able to hit a chip on his team’s third shot and rolled it in from more than 23 feet for birdie to tie Ooshuizen and Schwartzel at 21 under. Both teams bogeyed the par-3 17th to head to the par-5 18th tied at 20 under. Peter Uihlein and Richy Werenski shot a 67, with six birdies and one bogey, to shoot up the leaderboard from 18th to third. Billy Horschel and former LSU player Sam Burns shot a 69 to tie for fourth with Brandt Snedeker-Keith Mitchell and Brendan Steele-Kegan Bradley. Ryan Palmer and Jon Rahm, the defending champions from 2019, closed with a 70 to finish seventh at 17 under.

Sergio Garcia birdies final hole to win in MississippiSergio Garcia birdies final hole to win in Mississippi

Sergio Garcia had gone just more than a year since his last victory, which felt even longer considering he failed to make the FedEx Cup playoffs and fell out of the top 50 in the world for the first time since 2011. Garcia hit a 5-wood that barely cleared a bunker and set up an eagle putt from just inside 4 feet to tie for the lead, and he won the Sanderson Farms Championship with an 8-iron to 30 inches for birdie on the final hole. ”The perfect ending for an amazing week,” Garcia said.
