Players support Senden’s son with Rubik Cube patch

IRVING, Texas – For just the second time since 2002, John Senden is not in the AT&T Byron Nelson field, a tournament that’s generally a fixture on his playing schedule. The reason is heartbreaking: Senden is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the PGA TOUR after announcing three weeks ago that his 13-year-old son Jacob has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Shortly after the announcement, Senden’s good friend and fellow Aussie Steven Bowditch – who lives close to the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas and won this event in 2015 – came up with an idea for TOUR pros to show their support. During Thursday’s first round, players wore on their caps a patch resembling a Rubik’s Cube, which happens to be Jacob’s favorite toy. While Senden is not here in person, the family – and especially Jacob – is in the thoughts of Bowditch and his fellow competitors. “We’re all thinking of him all the time, Bowditch said. “Anything we can do to try and put a smile on his face and help him get through this. We just all hope he can punch on through. Another Aussie, Cameron Percy, was on the practice green at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans when he heard that Bowditch and his partner Rod Pampling had withdrawn in the team event. Soon after, he was informed of the reason. “I had a tear in my eye, Percy recalled Thursday. “Everyone felt the same way – just devastated. We had played a practice round in San Antonio the previous week, had dinner twice and we spoke that Friday night. I had no idea. Neither did he. “There couldn’t be two nicer people than John and (wife) Jackie. It’s not fair, is it? Ernie Els had not been aware of the development until he showed up at the course Thursday at TPC Four Seasons and saw the patches of support. Nine years ago, Els announced that his son Ben was autistic, and since then, the South African and his wife Liezl have been instrumental in raising awareness for the disorder. Many TOUR pros have donated their time and participated in Els’ charitable functions for his foundation. “It just makes you think, Els said. “We’re chasing birdies and pars out here, but when you hear something like this, we pull together as a TOUR, as a friendship, as a unit. We’ve done it with me. We’ve done it with other guys. We’re going to do it for John and his family now. Jason Day has dealt with his own family’s cancer issues lately, his mother Dening having been diagnosed in Australia with terminal lung cancer. Day brought his mother to the United States, where further tests were done. Surgery was recently performed that resulted in a much more encouraging diagnosis, and Dening is now back in Australia with an improved outlook. “I know exactly what he’s feeling like in regard to that, Day said. Day and his wife Ellie have two young children. Day said he “could never fathom thinking about going through something like that. It breaks my heart for him and I’m just hoping and praying for the best for him and his family because it is a difficult time for him. And now the fight begins. Bowditch reports that Jacob had his first treatment last weekend. “I’m sure he’ll pull through and come out the other side, Bowditch said. “He’s a strong kid, a great kid with a great family.

Style Insider: Fowler, Puma honor Palmer with the API CollectionStyle Insider: Fowler, Puma honor Palmer with the API Collection

From custom kicks to hats and apparel adorned with Arnold Palmer’s iconic umbrella logo, Rickie Fowler has used his wardrobe to honor Palmer at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard the last few years. When Fowler tees it up this week at Bay Hill, he will once again slip-on limited-edition pieces inspired by Palmer’s life. Look for Fowler to wear special Arnold Palmer hats and a pair of IGNITE PROADAPT PALMER shoes from Puma Golf and his caddie will be toting a new API Cobra Stand Bag made by Vessel. The shoes Fowler will lace up were designed to pay homage to Palmer’s legendary golf career and love of aviation. The white, blue, and silver colorway was inspired by Palmer’s favorite plane, the first production Cessna 750 Citation X, and displays the tail number of his plane, N1AP, on the medial side. The 6 “windowsâ€ on the lateral side represent the six windows on the Cessna and the sockliner features Palmer’s unmistakable signature along with the Puma cat logo. Another shoe in the collection, the IGNITE NXT Arnie Camo, features a red, yellow, white, and green camo design on the outsole, heel, and collar lining to match the colors in Palmer’s umbrella logo. This same pattern is repeated on the API Puma x Vessel Stand Bag. Fowler will have plenty of hats to choose from at Bay Hill, too. His signature ‘P’ cap receives a twist with the addition of Palmer’s multi-colored umbrella logo in five bold camo colorways. A purple version was created in honor of International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8th. The range of caps is completed with two retro styles. The N1AP Rope 11 Cap combines a contemporary all-over print consisting of the tail number of Palmer’s plane with an old school rope design in three colorways. Puma also created Bay Hill and Latrobe City caps. The vintage snapback styles honor two places synonymous with Palmer’s legacy and feature a script that was found on sports caps thirty years ago. Fans can follow in Fowler’s footsteps as Puma will sell a limited amount of his custom gear plus other distinctive items online and at select retailers. Puma has also partnered with Arnie’s Army to raise funds for the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation with a sweepstakes for an Ultimate Golf Package open to anyone making a donation to the Foundation. The sweepstakes includes a trip for the winner and a guest to Bay Hill for a private tour and a round of golf. Puma API caps, shoes, and bags autographed by Fowler are include in the grand prize and as smaller prizes for donations. Puma will continue to honor Palmer beyond the 2020 API Collection. In June, it will launch the co-branded Puma x Arnold Palmer collection of apparel, footwear and accessories designed to be modern takes on the classic styles worn by Palmer during his career. In creating the collection, Puma product and design teams visited Latrobe and Bay Hill. There, they listened to stories from Palmer’s family, friends, and business associates to draw inspiration for the collection of elevated pieces. At this year’s Arnold Palmer, Puma will be hosting a trunk show to showcase the collection. Fans at the tournament will be able to get first dibs by pre-ordering the gear ahead of the official launch in June 2020.

Round 1: Casey leads, Woods in hunt as field plays catch-upRound 1: Casey leads, Woods in hunt as field plays catch-up

Considering all the things they do control, it's comforting to know the weather remains beyond the reach of the green jackets at Augusta National. Already short on daylight after the pandemic pushed the Masters back from April to November, they looked on helplessly as early thunderstorms stole three precious hours and turned Round 1 into something resembling one-half. When darkness halted play at 5:30 p.m. EST, there were 44 players still on the course and 48 who'd turned in complete scorecards, led by 43-year-old Englishman Paul Casey, with Webb Simpson, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas (who only played 10 holes on Thursday) two strokes back.
