Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas among big names bitten by Royal St. George’s

SANDWICH, England – While red numbers weren’t rare during the opening round at The 149th Open, Royal St. George’s still claimed some big names with U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm and PGA Champion Phil Mickelson among those to struggle. RELATED: Leaderboard | Jon Rahm leads the list of links specialists | Club foot reason for Jon Rahm’s TOUR-winning short swing The season’s previous two major winners will need a form turnaround if they are to make it a double in 2021, with Mickelson shooting a 10-over 80 – his worst ever start to a major – and Rahm battling to a 1-over 71. The man the duo both conquered – South African Louis Oosthuizen – has started his quest to better his back-to-back major runner-ups with a 6-under 64. It left those players on the wrong side of par with an uphill battle as 73 of the 154 players opened the championship at par or better. Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Fitzpatrick and defending champion Shane Lowry were among those joining Rahm at 1 over while Justin Thomas and Patrick Reed are 2 over. Recent PGA TOUR winners Garrick Higgo (73), Patrick Cantlay (74), Marc Leishman (75), Harris English (75), and Lucas Glover (75) also struggled. Rory McIlroy needed a final-hole birdie to shoot even-par 70. Mickelson’s 80 was his worst round in The Open – which he won in 2013 – since an 85 in the third round of the 1998 tournament. Those represent just two of now 93 rounds in The Open where the veteran has failed to break 80. Five bogeys on the front nine started the pain as the six-time major winner turned in 40 and another five dropped shots in his last six holes, including a closing double bogey, left him tied for last in the 154-man field. Spaniard Rahm was the pre-tournament favorite after his impressive U.S. Open victory at Torrey Pines last month, but he lost his way on the ninth hole when he failed to escape from a fairway bunker on the first attempt and made a double bogey. Playing with Oosthuizen, Rahm felt like his wheels were spinning despite making plenty of grinding pars, until a final-hole birdie gave him something to smile about. DeChambeau couldn’t get his radar adjusted off the tee. He managed four birdies on the round but hit the same number of fairways in regulation meaning he was hamstrung by five bogeys. “The driver sucks. It’s not a good face for me and we’re still trying to figure out how to make it good on the miss-hits. I’m living on the razor’s edge,” DeChambeau bemoaned post round. “It’s quite finicky for me because it’s a golf course that’s pretty short, and so when I hit driver and it doesn’t go in the fairway, it’s first cut or it’s in the hay, it’s tough for me to get it out on to the green and control that… I couldn’t control my wedges.”

Monday Qualifiers: OHL Classic at MayakobaMonday Qualifiers: OHL Classic at Mayakoba

The son of a legend, another young gun and a wily old veteran celebrating a milestone are among the Monday qualifiers for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Fresh on the heels of a former amateur standout Patrick Cantlay winning on the PGA TOUR another has given himself a chance at hitting the jackpot. Former U.S. Amateur Public Links champion and low amateur at the 2015 Open Championship Jordan Niebrugge shot 66 at the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Course to take medalist honors and will now line up at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa Del Carmen. The 24-year-old will play his 12th PGA TOUR event, his ninth as a professional this week. He’s made just three cuts in his previous 11 cracks at the big time, although one of those was an impressive T6 at St Andrews in the 2015 Open Championship. A quarter of his starts have come in majors as he’s also played the Masters in 2014 (MC), the Open Championship again in 2016 (MC) and the U.S. Open in 2017 (T35). The next two spots went to a pair of TOUR veterans with New Zealand’s Tim Wilkinson and American Ken Duke shooting 67 while the final spot went to Sean Jacklin after his 68. Duke, the 2013 Travelers Championship winner, will play his 300th TOUR event this week. The 48-year-old’s milestone week is his third start this season after missing the cut at the Safeway Open and Sanderson Farms Championship. Duke has 25 career Top-10s. He had 26 starts last season but finished 193rd in the FedExCup. Wilkinson has played in 158 TOUR events, including 22 last season where he finished 158th in the FedExCup standings. The 39-year-old has eight career top-10s on TOUR with his best finish being a T2 at the 2008 Valero Texas Open. Jacklin is the son of former English star Tony and although he has lived most of his life in the USA he plays under the country of his birth – Scotland.  After plying his trade in various places around the globe, including PGA TOUR – Latino America, the 25-year-old now gets the chance to make his PGA TOUR debut. Cameron Champ carries two PING 4-irons in his bagCameron Champ carries two PING 4-irons in his bag

Cameron Champ is known for his incredible distance off the tee, and rightfully so. In 74 rounds last season on the Web.com Tour, the 23-year-old led the way in driving distance, averaging 343.1 yards. It’s been more of the same this week at the Sanderson Farms Championship for the PGA TOUR rookie, who tops the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee while averaging 306.7 yards over three rounds. Given Champ’s impressive clubhead speed — he leads the TOUR at 129.6 miles per hour — and length, he’s been forced to get creative with the rest of his setup to ensure proper gapping. Case in point: When Champ first tested PING’s i500 3-iron, he was averaging 280-285 yards with the hollow-body club — a number that was too close to his G400 3-wood. Champ chose to go down one club to the i500 4-iron and found a more suitable gap at 270-275 yards. From there, Champ added another 4-iron to the bag, this time a solid construction iBlade version that went between 240-245 yards. While a 30-yard gap at the top of the bag might seem significant with long irons, Champ is able to back off the i500 to fill in the gap if he has a shot in the 250- to 260-yard range. Of course, Champ isn’t the first TOUR player to employ two irons with the same number stamped on the head. During the 2013 TOUR season, Keegan Bradley carried two 4-irons (Cleveland CG7 and 588 MT) en route to an opening-round 60 at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Jon Rahm used a similar strategy this year at the PGA Championship with TaylorMade RSi TP UDI and P750 4-irons. While the strategy might seem odd, the rise in forgiving long irons and utility irons has made it feasible for players, even those who carry a TOUR card, to throw two sticks with the same number in the bag to fill certain gaps and needs.
