Phil Mickelson cards 60 in first round of Desert Classic

After flirting once again with a 59, Phil Mickelson settled Thursday for another portion of the PGA TOUR record book, as he became the first golfer to record three rounds of 60 or better in TOUR history (ShotLink Era). Mickelson shot a 12-under 60 in the opening round of the Desert Classic, as he torched La Quinta Country Club with 10 birdies and an eagle. He rolled in a birdie putt inside 10 feet on the par-4 18th to record his 60. Mickelson’s two previous 60s both came at the Waste Management Phoenix Open – in 2005 and 2013. Unlike those two 60s, the Thursday round at La Quinta was on a par-72 course. The 12 under total is Mickelson’s lowest round in relation to par in his World Golf Hall of Fame career. The only other TOUR players to shoot multiple rounds of 60 or better are Jim Furyk (who owns the TOUR record of 58, along with one of the nine rounds of 59 in TOUR history) and Zach Johnson (who has shot two rounds in the 60s). Mickelson’s round Thursday is the 37th time in TOUR history that a player has shot 60. He made the turn in 30 and promptly ripped off five birdies in his next seven holes. Needing to go birdie-birdie on his final two holes to shoot 59, he came up just short, making par on the par-4 17th before his birdie on the final hole. He walked off the 18th green with a four-shot lead over Curtis Luck, with several groups still in action at the Desert Classic, which uses three courses in the first three days. “It was kind of a lucky day for me in the sense that I did not feel sharp heading in, Mickelson said. “I haven’t really had the intense practice sessions that I would like, but I felt that all parts were OK and it just clicked. Sometimes you have days where it just clicks. Bad shots that I hit, I got away with it … It was a fun day, but I certainly did not expect this to be the case. With no expectations of shooting low, Mickelson said he was just staying more in the present “for the simple reason that I didn’t feel like I was firing on all cylinders. But he did acknowledge that before making his 4-footer at the 16th for birdie, he realized that 59 was in reach. Using a sand wedge on his approach into 17, Mickelson said he didn’t hook it as much as he wanted, leaving him a much longer putt than he would’ve liked. Mickelson nearly shot 59 at the 2013 Waste Management, but a brutal lip-out on the final hole ended his chances. He was vying to become the 11th player in PGA TOUR history to shoot a sub-60 score in tournament competition. The last player to shoot 59 was Brandt Snedeker at the 2018 Wyndham Championship. The only 58 in PGA TOUR history was by Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelers Championship.

Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation hosts ninth annual Hope for the HolidaysJim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation hosts ninth annual Hope for the Holidays

The Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation didn't let the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic stop its efforts to give back to those in need this holiday season. The ninth annual Hope for the Holidays event looked a little different with masks and social distancing, but, the end result was the same. The foundation was able to secure, pack and deliver more than 5,000 bags of nonperishable food and holiday treats to families in need around the greater Jacksonville area, setting a new record for the annual event. Following health and safety guidelines, volunteers from the Monique Burr Foundation, NGCRA, Nease Lacrosse, past FURYK & FRIENDS participants, and many family groups turned out during their allotted time slots to help pack meals. The food was donated by Target, Pepsi Co, Quaker and Conagra Brands or purchased by the foundation and through online donations to Hope for the Holidays. "The event began as a way for children to actively help others in their community and it was important for us to continue that tradition," said Tabitha Furyk, wife of PGA TOUR player Jim Furyk and head of the foundation. "Instead of having one night where the community could come together to help those in need, we created a week-long schedule with individual slots for packing in order to provide a safe and enjoyable experience." Each of the 5,000 bags were packed with 15 items, including green beans, corn, chicken broth, soup, mashed potatoes, noodles, gravy, stuffing, oatmeal, cereal, granola bars, Vienna sausage and Slim Jims, as well as special holiday treats like hot chocolate and candy canes. A total of 4,000 children in the Blessings in a Backpack program received a bag of food, as well as children in each of the following programs: The MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation, Daniel Kids, Hubbard House, Foster Closet, Community PedsCare and the USO. Sulzbacher, Mission House, Jewish Family & Community Services and the Carver Center also received canned goods and cereal. The pandemic may have hindered local volunteers from certain opportunities to give back this holiday season. However, the Jim and Tabitha Furyk Foundation worked hard to create a safe and impactful experience for all volunteers who showed up wanting to help pack meals for local families. "We are so thankful to our supporters, ranging from large corporations to the grade school children that show up to help us make a difference in Jacksonville and beyond," said Tabitha Furyk. With an increased number of families facing food insecurity this year, the Hope for the Holidays event was more important than ever to Jacksonville families in need of meals. Sponsors, volunteers and other charitable organizations all played a key role in amplifying this year's event to secure, pack and deliver a record number of food bags. "Feeding the children in Jacksonville, along with their families, has always been an important mission," said Jim Furyk, a 17-time winner on the PGA TOUR and two-time PGA TOUR Champions winner. "This year, being able to help even more people was a true blessing." About the Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation The Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation is dedicated to helping children and families in need. By providing project specific funding, the foundation can supply food for underprivileged students, care for children with life-limiting or threatening conditions and provide a safe place for them to go after school. In 2021, The Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation is bringing a new event to PGA TOUR Champions with the addition of Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS. The inaugural annual event will be held at Timuquana Country Club, October 4-10, 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida with all proceeds benefiting Northeast Florida charities.

D’Amato: The Masters leader board is crowded with top players going into the weekendD’Amato: The Masters leader board is crowded with top players going into the weekend

AUGUSTA, Ga. – With the 82nd Masters Tournament at the halfway point, here are two bet-the-farm predictions for the weekend: 1) There will be no surprise winner, no Danny Willett emerging from the rank-and-file to don a green jacket. Of the top 13 players on the leader board after the second round Friday, none is ranked outside the top 34 in the Official World Golf Ranking, six are in the top 10 and eight are major champions. One of them is going to win. Will it be Rory or Rickie? Dustin or Justin or Stenson or Watson? “There’s great players, it looks like, all over that leader board, said Justin Rose, twice a runner-up at Augusta National. “It’s the Masters and we’re trying to get our games
