PGA Tour attorneys push to unseal LIV contracts

Attorneys representing the PGA Tour submitted a motion Tuesday asking a federal judge to unseal certain details of contracts that were signed by the tour’s former players who defected to the rival LIV Golf circuit earlier this year.

Three tied for the lead at Rocket Mortgage ClassicThree tied for the lead at Rocket Mortgage Classic

DETROIT – Doc Redman is playing his best golf, priming him to perhaps earn his first PGA TOUR victory. Redman shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday to share the first-round lead with Scott Stallings and Kevin Kisner at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Bryson DeChambeau, the only player with top-10 finishes in each of the last three tournaments, topped the group a stroke back. The 22-year-old Redman closed with four straight birdies and seven over the last eight holes at the Detroit Golf Club. Last year, he went from being a Monday qualifier to finishing second at the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic. RELATED: Leaderboard | Fowler enjoys solid start at Rocket Mortgage | Getting dialed in on the AREA 313 Challenge At last week’s Travelers Championship, Redman closed with a 63 to tie for 11th — his best performance this season — after tying for 21st the RBC Heritage. “I’ve come off two good finishes and a really good finish last year at this event, which has never really happened to me,” he said. “So, I’ve never had this kind of expectation externally or even internally.” Stallings, who tied for sixth last week, birdied his last two holes and three of four. Players with afternoon tee times didn’t fare as well, but Kisner was an exception with a bogey-free round. DeChambeau surged up the leaderboard with four birdies and an eagle over a eight-hole stretch on the back nine. He gave a stroke back, though, with a bogey at the 18th after pushing an 8-foot putt just to the right. “That really got me a little agitated,” DeChambeau said. “It’s going to put a little fire in my belly.” Peter Malnati, Emiliano Grillo, Chase Seiffert, J.J. Spaun, Matt Wallace and Chris Stroud matched DeChambeau at 66. Rickie Fowler, who has missed the cut in the two tournaments he has played since the restart, was among the many players another shot back. Redman, DeChambeau, Lucas Glover, Tyler Duncan, Viktor Hovland, Mark Hubbard and Brian Stuard have made the cut in all three events since the PGA TOUR’s return. On a quiet morning at the fan-free tournament in which the hum of generators was often the only sound, a slew of players took advantage of favorable playing conditions and one of the easier courses on the PGA TOUR. Fowler started with a birdie on his first hole and four on his first six. He pulled within a stroke of the lead when he was standing on his ninth tee and got into trouble in the rough, which appears to be longer than it was last year in the Motor City, and ended up with a double bogey at the par-4, 465-yard 18th. “There was probably, I don’t know, 8 inches of grass there,” Fowler said. “I thought it was going to kind of just pop up when I hit it and it kind of came out low and left.” Defending champion Nate Lashley, who had a wire-to-wire win at the Detroit Golf Club last year, opened with a birdie before hurting his chance to repeat with three bogeys and three birdies the rest of the round. Lashley landed in a greenside bunker and holed out from 45 feet on his final hole to escape with a much-needed birdie, but just a few people clapped and several others simply stood silently. “With no fans out here, it almost feels like it’s not a golf tournament,” Lashley said. “I need to maybe get some nerves for (Friday) and get a little adrenaline going.”

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Following the recent announcement and guidelines issued by the General Administration of Sports of China with regards to the staging of international sporting events in China, the PGA TOUR - on behalf of the International Federation of PGA Tours and in consultation with the China Golf Association - announced that the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, scheduled for Oct. 29-Nov. 1, has been canceled. "We have worked extensively with all Tours, international officials, the China Golf Association and other local parties to find a solution to host the WGC-HSBC Champions," said Ty Votaw, PGA TOUR Executive Vice President, International. "In line with Chinese government guidelines and being mindful of the logistical implications, we collectively made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 event." Votaw added: "The WGC-HSBC Champions has been a catalyst in the growth in interest and participation in our sport throughout China and Asia. While we are disappointed with not being able to bring the world's best players to Shanghai this year, our thanks goes out to HSBC, the China Golf Association and the fans in China who have helped make this event so successful since it became a World Golf Championships event in 2009."

Fantasy golf advice: One & Done, Puerto Rico OpenFantasy golf advice: One & Done, Puerto Rico Open

With a record five additional events on the docket this season, I applaud all entrepreneurial gamers who built a One & Done private game consisting solely of these tournaments. It’s not unlike popular pools that include only the majors. They’re easy, focused and fun. Those of you with Cameron Champ at the Sanderson Farms Championship would be leading the way entering this week’s Puerto Rico Open. The PGA TOUR rookie is taking the week off, but there are 132 hopefuls vying for immunity on the island. Experience at Coco Beach Golf Club isn’t the worst thing in the world in which to invest in the pursuit of 300 FedExCup points. Scott Brown, David Hearn and Rafael Campos have been among the most reliable in this week’s field. Each has done more than enough recently to retain an elevated expectation and you’re not going to miss any of them. Cachet in an additional event can include a burden of unfair expectations, but the less you think about it, the more it makes sense. That’s why Daniel Berger, Peter Uihlein, Chris Kirk and Charl Schwartzel should resonate when the ownership percentages are locked in. Berger is only a month into his return from the injury to his right wrist, but that’s enough. Consider him an easy bonus for he may not need to appear in another additional event for some time. Uihlein deserves a look as he also has positive experience in Puerto Rico. The rub is that we still don’t have details about the unspecified injury that forced him to withdraw during the Waste Management Phoenix Open. From that standpoint, he’s a risk, but he’s chalk properly played. Kirk and Schwartzel are reeling. Avoid both. Matt Every sits atop my Power Rankings, so I’m not hesitating. His blend of success, overall experience and surging form unites at a time when I hope he’s competing with a chip on his shoulder for having to stay warm on the Web.com Tour due to his Past Champion status on the PGA TOUR. Aaron Baddeley surprises when we least expect it, which is to say that it’s better than not at all. It also slots him as a wild card as a One & Done. He tied for eighth in his only trip to Coco Beach in 2016 and comes off an unexpected T49 at Riviera where he open-qualified for entry. Two-man gamers can have a field day with the options, but Corey Conners leads that corps of the complements. Nate Lashley also deserves consideration. If you’re keen on a long shot, I love how D.J. Trahan fits the profile of all things PRO. FUTURE POSSIBILITIES NOTE: Select golfers committed to the tournament are listed alphabetically. Future tournaments are sorted chronologically and reflect previous success on the courses on which the tournaments will be held in 2018-19. The numerical values in parentheses represent the order of relative confidence of where to use each golfer if multiple sites are listed (e.g. 1 for strongest, 2 for next-strongest and so on). To present weighted confidence in real time, numerical values will not change all season no matter how many tournament remain listed for each golfer. All are pending golfer commitment. Daniel Berger … Travelers (1) Chris Kirk … PLAYERS (5); Valero (3); Charles Schwab (2)
