PGA Championship: Tee times, groupings for Rounds 1-2

NOTE: Full tee times, groupings at bottom The tee times are out for the year’s first major. There’s plenty of star power in the featured groups for Thursday’s first round at TPC Harding Park. This will be the first major held at San Francisco’s municipal gem, and while there will not be any spectators on site, it is setting up to be a memorable week for the first major in more than a year. Storylines are aplenty. Can Justin Thomas win a second PGA after last week’s win in the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational? Is Tiger Woods capable of a 16th major title and record-setting 83rd PGA TOUR victory? Can Jordan Spieth complete the career Grand Slam? Will Jon Rahm win after reaching No. 1 in the world? How will Bryson DeChambeau’s big-bombing style of play fare in a major? And can Webb Simpson win another major across Lake Merced from the site of his 2012 U.S. Open triumph? Not only is this the season’s first major, but with only two weeks remaining in the regular season, this is an important week before the start of the FedExCup Playoffs. Here’s a look at the groups to watch, as well as the full-field tee times (Note: All times Pacific; FedExCup ranking in parentheses): 8:11 a.m. PT: Gary Woodland (30)-Shane Lowry (130)-Brooks Koepka (96) This group comprises the winners of the past three majors. Koepka is going for the PGA three-peat after his runner-up at last week’s World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Woodland won last year’s U.S. Open just down the California coast in Pebble Beach. He was runner-up in the 2015 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play at Harding Park. And Lowry is the last man to win a major, with his emotional win in The Open Championship. 8:22 a.m. PT: Jordan Spieth (90)-Dustin Johnson (25)-Justin Rose (135) Two former FedExCup champions, Spieth and Rose, are in this group. All three players are former World No. 1s, as well. It’s been three years since Spieth’s last win, but he could still complete the Career Grand Slam this week. All three are former U.S. Open champions, as well. 8:33 a.m. PT: Justin Thomas (1)-Tiger Woods (48)-Rory McIlroy (5) A combined five FedExCups are in this group. McIlroy and Woods are the only two-time winners of the FedExCup and Thomas is in good position to join them. He took a large lead in this season’s standings with his win at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Woods is seeking his record-setting 83rd PGA TOUR victory. Woods and McIlroy have already hoisted trophies at Harding Park. Woods won the 2005 WGC-American Express Championship here, while McIlroy claimed the 2015 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. 1:47 p.m. PT: Rickie Fowler (79)-Bryson DeChambeau (4)-Adam Scott (35) DeChambeau’s revamped game takes on a major for the first time. He has a win and seven other top-10s this season. Fowler is trying to win his first Grand Slam event. Scott is making his first start since the season resumed. He won early this year at the Genesis Invitational down in Southern California. 1:58 p.m. PT: Jon Rahm (10)-Phil Mickelson (62)-Sergio Garcia (132) Jon Rahm is the youngest player in this group, but he’s also the only one to hold the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking. He lost that mantle after Thomas’ win at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, but he still is one of the favorites. Rahm won recently at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide. He’ll be in a comfortable group. Garcia is his Spanish countryman, while Mickelson is a fellow Arizona State alum. Mickelson is coming off a runner-up finish at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, his best showing of the year. Garcia is third in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee this season, which will be handy at Harding Park. Here are the tee times and groupings for Rounds 1-2 of the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park. 2018-19 Rookie Rankings2018-19 Rookie Rankings

There are 21 rookies on the PGA TOUR in 2018-19. This page provides a subjective ranking updated weekly. The Rookie of the Year is voted by PGA TOUR members who make at least 15 starts. There he is again: Cameron Champ doing work. Of the 20 rookies in the field at The RSM Classic, only eight survived the cut and Champ set the pace once again, this time with a sixth-place finish, his third top 10 of the young season. He’s reminding us of Tony Finau, but only because they share the bonus of being able to send the ball out of sight. Instead, and in fact, Champ is excelling everywhere, just as his veteran comparison has illustrated with an exponentially greater sample size of sites and over time. After Champ broke through at the Sanderson Farms Championship at the Country Club of Jackson, a course where attacking on approach is Priority A, the 23-year-old placed T10 at Mayakoba where ball-striking and men of a certain age have thrived. Last week at Sea Island, he finished just T31 in distance of all drives (measured during three rounds on Seaside only) and T22 in greens hit, but he led the field in putts per GIR and finished fourth in converting GIR into par breakers. Finau, who went 22-for-31 with five top 10s (but zero top fives) as a rookie in 2014-15, presents similarly as a home-run hitter, but he’s the complete package. His game travels arguably better than any other one-time winner on the PGA TOUR, but you already can put Champ on that short list. The only rookie who sat out the 156-man contest in the Golden Isles was Cameron Davis. Opting to defend his title at the Emirates Australian Open in his homeland, he finished T40. Since the first edition of the wraparound season in 2013-14, seven rookies have won a tournament in the fall, six of whom entered the holidays inside the top 10 of the FedExCup standings. After winning last year’s RSM Classic, Austin Cook ranked third, best of the bunch. Champ sits sixth right now. Mackenzie Hughes (fourth in 2015-16) and Smylie Kaufman (fifth in 2014-15) also have slotted higher at this point. While Champ didn’t set a new mark compared to rookies early in previous seasons, to further accentuate his success against the current class, Sungjae Im is the only other rookie with at least one low-rookie performance, and he has three. Yet, the 20-year-old has only two top-35 finishes. NOTE: Since the Sentry Tournament of Champions is up next on the schedule, this page likely won’t be updated again until its field is released on Friday, Dec. 28. LOW ROOKIE: Cameron Champ, 6th. Third time. (Previous: Win=Sanderson Farms; T10=Mayakoba.)     CAREER-BEST FINISHES (AND TIES): Chase Wright (T7), Kyle Jones (T23), Hank Lebioda (T32).              * – Qualified for the Sentry Tournament of Champions (Jan. 3-6). Through The RSM Classic NOTE: A player’s rookie season (“Rookie Year”) is defined as the season in which he becomes a PGA TOUR member (including Special Temporary Members) and plays in 10 or more events as a member or finishes in the Top 125 on the Official FedExCup Points List or qualifies as a Top 125 – Nonmember, whichever occurs first. Further, for purposes of this definition, a new member (including Special Temporary Members) shall not be eligible to be a rookie if he has previously played in more than seven (7) Official PGA TOUR Money events as a professional in any prior season.

Koepka captures U.S. Open, ties record at 16-underKoepka captures U.S. Open, ties record at 16-under

ERIN, Wis. — Brooks Koepka traveled around the world to find his game. He found stardom right at home as the U.S. Open champion. Koepka broke away from a tight pack with three straight birdies on the back nine Sunday at Erin Hills and closed with a 5-under 67 to win the U.S. Open for his first major championship. A par on the final hole tied Rory McIlroy’s record score to par at 16 under for a four-shot victory. Not even the wind could stop the onslaught of low scores at Erin Hills. And nothing could stop Koepka. “What I’ve done this week is amazing,” Koepka. Tied for the lead with six holes to play, Koepka made an 8-foot par putt on the 13th hole. As Brian Harman began to fade, Koepka poured it on with birdies over the next three holes, lightly pumping his fist after each one. His reaction was subdued, just like his close friend and last year’s U.S. Open champion, Dustin Johnson. They spend time a lot of time together on the course, in the gym and at home, so Koepka has seen that U.S. Open trophy plenty at Johnson’s house in south Florida. And now he gets to keep it for a year, with his name on it. It capped quite a journey for the 27-year-old Floridian. Without a card on any tour when Koepka got out of Florida State, he filled his passport with stamps from the most unlikely outposts in golf while playing the minor leagues on the European Tour — Kazakhstan and Kenya, Portugal and India and throughout Europe. It was at the U.S. Open three years ago when Koepka tied for fourth that helped earn a PGA TOUR card, and he powered his way from obscurity to his first PGA TOUR victory in Phoenix, his first Ryder Cup team last fall and now a major championship. Harman’s chances ended with two straight bogeys, and a bogey on the par-5 18th hole gave him a 72 and a tie for second with Hideki Matsuyama of Japan, who closed with a 66. Matsuyama didn’t need to stick around very long. Koepka simply couldn’t miss. Koepka, who finished at 16-under 272, became the seventh straight first-time winner of a major championship, and it was the first time since 1998-2000 that Americans won their national championship three straight years. Tommy Fleetwood, who played alongside Koepka and closed with a 72 to finish fourth, played the Challenge Tour a year before Koepka arrived. “It gives you a good grounding,” Fleetwood said. “Obviously, Brooks dealt with it amazingly. He came and kicked everyone’s (behind) over there, didn’t he? But he’s proven for a long time how good he is. Now he’s done it in a major.” It was only fitting that Koepka left Erin Hills with yet another record matched or broken. McIlroy finished at 16-under 268 when he won on rain-softened Congressional in the 2011 U.S. Open. But the low scoring went much deeper than that. Only six players had ever reached double digits under par in the previous 116 times at the U.S. Open. McIlroy and Tiger Woods (12 under at Pebble Beach in 2000) had been the only players to finish there. This week alone, nine players reached at least 10 under and seven finished there. Xander Schauffele, a rookie on the PGA TOUR playing in his first U.S. Open, birdied his last hole for a 69 to tie for fifth at 10-under 268 along with Bill Haas (69) and Rickie Fowler (72), who was poised at yet another major to win only to fall back. Fowler started one shot out of the lead at the Masters this year and shot 76. He was only two behind when he made the turn, but bogeys on the 12th and 15th holes — and no birdies until No. 18 — ended his hopes. Justin Thomas, coming off a 9-under 63 that matched the major championship scoring record and was the first 9-under round at a U.S. Open, went out in 39 and closed with a 75 to tie for ninth. The week ended with 31 players under par, breaking the U.S. Open record of 28 players at Medinah in 1990. There were 133 sub-par rounds, nine more than the previous record in that 1990 U.S. Open. Erin Hills, an 11-year-old course shaped out of Wisconsin pastureland, didn’t put up much of a fight without much wind. The strongest gusts were Sunday morning and it tapered to a strong breeze by the afternoon. No one was more solid from start to finish than Koepka. He opened with a pair of tap-in birdies and putted for birdie on every hole but the par-3 13th. Of all his birdies, that 8-foot par putt might have been as big as any. “I needed something to go in and see that to build momentum off it, and just carried that over,” Koepka said.
