PGA Championship 2.0 starts at Bethpage Black

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – With its new May date, leaving August to the FedExCup Playoffs, the PGA Championship represents the exact mid-way point in golf’s new Season of Championships, five big tournaments over five months. PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh spoke of how the new schedule improves the “cadenceâ€ of the season. PGA of America President Suzy Whaley said the PGA Championship’s new date coincides nicely with the start of the golf season. All of these things, while positives, have required a certain adaptability and good cheer. Then there’s PGA of America Chief Championships Officer Kerry Haigh, whose job has changed most of all. He laughed about waiting for spring, and wondering nervously if it would ever come. “Thankfully for all of our lives,â€ Haigh said, “that’s happened.â€ Bethpage features 25 acres of fairway, 35 acres of primary rough, and 78 bunkers, approximately eight acres of sand. There’s just one water hazard, at the 210-yard, par-3 eighth hole. The tees and fairways are poa annua and ryegrass, the greens a mix of poa annua and bentgrass. Fans who tune into CBS’s coverage will get to see all of that in living color, mostly green. RELATED: Tee times | Power Rankings | Expert Picks | Tiger ‘rested and ready’ | Wednesday notebook What they won’t see is the behind-the-scenes race to make it that way. The MVPs here are mostly Bethpage Director of Agronomy Andrew Wilson, Black Course Superintendent Mike Hadley, and Haigh. Those three and their staffs had a growing season of only about four weeks in which to make this vaunted, A.W. Tillinghast design tournament-ready. That’s not a lot of time, but they seem to have pulled it off. “It’s in beautiful shape,â€ said Jordan Spieth. “The greens are just immaculate.â€ That’s been a common sentiment. But how did that happen? Planning was the key. In preparation for spring 2019, Haigh, Wilson and Hadley began in spring 2018. When would the grass come in? When could they aerate and top-dress? Could they skip any steps? What could be done in order to get the course ready as fast as possible? “We knew sort of what happened, when it happened,â€ Haigh said. “We adjusted our agronomic plans that normally are done in the spring, moved some of those to the fall and didn’t do some of the things you normally do in the spring knowing that it was such a short period.â€ Case in point, agronomist Wilson said he noticed during last year’s “practice runâ€ (his words) that some of the grass on the course was still straw-colored or dormant on May 1. To accelerate the greening process, he brought the soil moisture up, which better retained the heat. “A little trick,â€ he said. Moisture has been plentiful this week, but with its sandy soil, Bethpage has drained well. Haigh and company, with additional manpower from volunteer superintendents from 16 states and six countries, were able to do little more than mow and roll the greens with the heavy rain Sunday and Monday. They planned to “topâ€ or cut the rough on Wednesday. Players have emphasized the importance of hitting fairways while not sacrificing distance on a course that measures 7,459 yards but may in fact play even longer than that in the damp cold. “I think it’s going to be interesting for everyone, definitely the course this week, but maybe going forward, as well,â€ said Italy’s Francesco Molinari. “… If you think about the last few U.S. PGAs, it was seriously warm, and we haven’t got any of that this week.â€ Defending champion Brooks Koepka called Bethpage a sort of PGA/U.S. Open mashup. To take it further, the Black will have not just elements of the U.S. Open (the first major to come here, in 2002), but also The Open Championship (weather) and THE PLAYERS Championship (date). But Haigh, whom Rory McIlroy called the best course set-up man in the business, will give it the PGA imprimatur. That means keeping it fair, and not becoming the story. “Our number one aim is not to get in the way of the best players,â€ he said. “Let them showcase their skills, make it tough, make it fair, make it challenging, hopefully at times make it exciting, and hopefully make the players think because I think if any golfer is given the ability to think, then they enjoy their game more and they enjoy the challenge of that golf course more.â€ Waugh conceded that certain courses in the Northeast may need to be reevaluated, while others in the Southeast might be brought back into the fold. In the end, he anticipated a net gain. “We think we’re great here,â€ he said of Bethpage. The course is ready. Now it’s just a matter of which of the 156 players are.

Style Insider: 2018 THE PLAYERS Championship recapStyle Insider: 2018 THE PLAYERS Championship recap

Check out the best looks, coolest kicks and hottest trends from the week at TPC Sawgrass. Phil Mickelson (Mizzen+Main) Rickie Fowler is no stranger to controversial fashion selections, but this week it was his playing partner Phil Mickelson who had social media buzzing. Lefty played the first two rounds in a performance button-down from menswear brand Mizzen+Main before missing the cut. Expect this to be a regular style for Phil moving forward. He first wore a Mizzen+Main dress shirt during a practice round at Augusta and he reportedly inked a deal with the brand last week which gave him an undisclosed stake in the company. Webb Simpson (FootJoy) 2018 PLAYERS Champion Webb Simpson has always favored a classic style, but he uses modern details to keep his looks fresh and on point. Throughout the week he put a contemporary spin on traditional looks with heathered textures, splashes of bright colors, and trim 5-pocket trousers. Bubba Watson (G/FORE) Personal edition shoes are all the rage with professional athletes in other sports, and Bubba is leading the charge on the PGA TOUR. He teamed up with G/FORE and sneaker artist Roland Patron of Nomad Customs on these Mother’s Day shoes. Patron has created custom cleats for Major League Baseball players and bespoke golf shoes for NBA stars Chris Paul and Ray Allen. He even created the Kobe Bryant tribute shoes Tony Finau wore at the TOUR Championship last fall. Dustin Johnson (adidas Golf) Bubba wasn’t the only one with special kicks for the week. DJ and other adidas Golf players debuted the brand’s Special Edition Silver BOOST™ shoes during the second round. This is only the second time adidas has used a colored BOOST midsole in a golf shoe. (A black colorway was worn at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play back in March.) To celebrate the launch, adidas outfitted its players in coordinating white and silver outfits to complement the shoes. Jason Dufner Proving that TOUR players are just regular guys, Jason Dufner apparently hit the pro shop at TPC Sawgrass for a little souvenir shopping and he emerged with this old-school rope hat. Playing without a headwear contract this year, Dufner has displayed a random assortment of lids, including everything from professional sports teams to surf shops. If you are looking to take your headwear game to the next level this summer, add a retro rope hat to your repertoire. Patrick Cantlay (TravisMathew) All-over prints continue to be one of the biggest fashion trends on the fairways and summer is the perfect time to have some fun with them. This whimsical print from TravisMathew, which consists of dancing tacos, cacti, sombreros and whistles tells people you are up on the latest styles, but you don’t take yourself too seriously. Charl Schwartzel (Michael Kors) As we move into the hot and humid months, many of us will be looking to beat the heat by slipping on white shirts and shorts. While head-to-toe white outfits typically scream, “hospital orderly, Charl Schwartzel’s predominately white kit had just enough navy blue to feel fresh and athletic for a warm day on the links. By the way, this is the one time you want to wear a white belt. Jonas Blixt (J.Lindeberg) One of the more artistic looks at TPC Sawgrass was courtesy of Jonas Blixt and J.Lindeberg. Blixt sported one of the polos from the Swedish fashion house’s new Art Polo capsule collection. This polo was created by an artist who sketched the design by hand and used a deep ink saturation technique to make it appear like the design was painted directly on the shirt. The two X’s symbolize J.Lindeberg’s 20 years in the golf apparel market. Billy Horschel (RLX Ralph Lauren) Any time Billy Horschel tees it up, he is one of the best dressed players. What separates Horschel from the pack is his attention to details. Notice how he matched his belt to his collar in both of these outfits. That is how you take your style game to the next level. Danny Lee (Devereux) Monochromatic grey kits are trickier than they may seem. Wearing the same shade of grey from top to bottom can make your outfits look flat and boring. When wearing grey from head to toe, take a page out of Danny Lee’s fashion playbook and pair a darker shade with a lighter one to add depth and sophistication to your look. WiretoWire: Cameron Smith historically low week at Sentry TOCWiretoWire: Cameron Smith historically low week at Sentry TOC

RECORD-BREAKING WEEK FOR SMITH AT SENTRY TOC If the PGA TOUR’s 2022-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions is any indication, the ‘offseason rust’ narrative might be a thing of the past. The ‘underdog’ narrative around champion Cameron Smith might not be for long, either. Smith began the final round at the picturesque Plantation Course at Kapalua in a share of the lead, having yet to trail after any round, matched up with none other than world No. 1 Jon Rahm. The soft-spoken Aussie didn’t back down, making birdie at the 72nd hole for a final-round, 8-under 65 and one-shot victory over Rahm at an astounding winning total of 34-under. Not only did Smith set the PGA TOUR’s all-time 72-hole scoring record, but runner-up Rahm (33-under) and third-place Matt Jones (32-under) all surpassed Ernie Els’ previous record total of 31-under, set in 2003 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Smith, 28, first demonstrated an affinity for the Aloha vibe with a victory at the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii – his second of now four TOUR titles, the other two coming at the two-man Zurich Classic of New Orleans, alongside fellow Australians Jonas Blixt (2017) and Marc Leishman (2021). He’ll aim to maintain the vibe in Honolulu at next week’s Sony Open, seeking an Aloha Double with the Sentry Tournament of Champions’ ocean-blue, crescent-shaped trophy already in tow. The adopted Jacksonville, Florida-area resident moves to No. 3 in the FedExCup standings – recording 500 points for the win – as the star continues to burn bright for the affable, mullet-sporting pro. ISLAND HOPPING TO SONY OPEN The Sony Open in Hawaii welcomes back the world’s top golfers for four rounds at scenic Waialae Country Club. Twenty-four players who teed it up at the Sentry Tournament of Champions will make the trip from Kapalua to Honolulu, including defending Sony Open champion Kevin Na. Bryson DeChambeau returns to Waialae for the first time since he transformed his body, and the game, to chase speed and distance. The top-ranked amateur in the world, Keita Nakajima, is in the field. Nakajima finished T28 at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in his home country of Japan last fall. The full field takes on Waialae, a mainstay on the schedule where wind is always a factor on the tight course, as are the iconic “W” trees. There are 500 FedExCup points on hand for the winner plus a spot in THE PLAYERS, multiple majors and a return trip to paradise in 2023. VIDEO OF THE WEEK Jon Rahm shoots a course-record 61 in the third round in Kapalua. MIC CHECK “I really didn’t do anything. I worked out, ate, went to the beach … just had a vacation essentially,” – Viktor Hovland on his preparation in Hawaii while waiting to be reunited with his lost golf clubs. BY THE NUMBERS 48 – Age of Stewart Cink, who turned back the clock last season after gaining distance off the tee. He won twice on TOUR and averaged more than 306 yards off the tee. Go inside his swing and take a closer look at the changes he made. 25 – Pounds Steve Stricker lost while dealing with a “mysterious ailment” in late November. The captain of the victorious U.S. Ryder Cup team and 12-time TOUR winner has his eyes set on a March return at THE PLAYERS. 3rd – Waialae Country Club’s rank as the longest-running host venue (non-major) on the PGA TOUR behind Colonial Country Club and Pebble Beach Golf Links. The Sony Open begins this week in Honolulu. COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 The Comcast Business TOUR TOP 10 highlights and rewards the extraordinary level of play required to earn a spot in the TOP 10 at the conclusion of the FedExCup Regular Season as determined by the FedExCup standings. The competition recognizes and awards the most elite in golf.

Watch: DJ destroys 439-yard drive at FirestoneWatch: DJ destroys 439-yard drive at Firestone

AKRON, Ohio – Leave it to Dustin Johnson to downplay the longest drive on the PGA Tour since 2013. Johnson uncorked a mammoth tee shot on the par-5 16th at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, barreling down a slope and ending up 439 yards from where it started. The drive was 11 yards longer than Johnson’s 428-yard bomb at Kapalua that previously stood as the season’s longest shot, and it was the longest on Tour since Phil Mickelson hit a (cart path-aided) drive 450 yards four years ago at Trump National Doral. “I mean, you hit one solid down the middle there for me, I can get down to the bottom, Johnson said. “I got it down there pretty nicely. Uh, yeah. The dazzling drive led to a birdie, although
