Patrick Cantlay heeds Jack Nicklaus’ advice to win the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide

DUBLIN, Ohio – Jack Nicklaus was watching for something intently in Patrick Cantlay’s final round at the Memorial Tournament Presented by Nationwide. It wasn’t the crisp irons under pressure. It wasn’t hip turn, or club head speed, face angle, or anything else Trackman might measure. It was a smile. “He did it at 15!,â€ Nicklaus interjected in Cantlay’s winners conference when it was suggested Cantlay hadn’t smiled until he putted out on 18 to all but secure his second PGA TOUR victory. The reason Nicklaus was looking for it was some advice he had passed on to Cantlay on Friday at Muirfield Village. You see Cantlay has always had a special relationship with Mr. Nicklaus. From the time he was awarded the Jack Nicklaus Award as the best collegiate player in America in 2011 the two have had a kinship. Nicklaus goes as far to say Cantlay, and all of the other previous winners of the award, are “in many ways my children.â€ But on Friday, having seen Cantlay not turn his stellar talent into more wins since he won in November 2017 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, Nicklaus seized an opportunity. “I was in there having lunch after the early morning round on Friday, and he grabbed me aside and said, you need to go out there, have a good time. Look around when you’re out there. Look at all the people having a great time. And then you need to have a great time and realize that that’s why you’re there and relax and go have fun and go win the golf tournament,â€ Cantlay recounted of Nicklaus’ advice. Related: Cantlay’s comeback from tragedy | Tiger cards final-round 67 | FedExCup standings | Final leaderboard “And I definitely said that to myself down the stretch today on the back nine. It put me a little more at ease, and I hit a lot of really nice quality shots with the lead, coming down the stretch.â€ It wasn’t the first time the two had conversed on golfing matters. In fact a few years ago Cantlay went to Nicklaus’ house and the two spent 90 minutes going over strategy for Muirfield Village. Clearly that was time well spent. But this week the 18-time major winner had something he really wanted to get across. “He reminds me a lot of me,â€ Nicklaus said. “I get so wrapped up in what I’m doing I forget about everything else that’s going on around me. And I sit there and say, you know, if I can help them, pass that along, maybe it will help them. And if it did, that’s great. If it didn’t, it didn’t make any difference, he won a golf tournament, either way.â€ The thing with Cantlay is whether he is aware of it or not, he always looks serious. Like Batman serious. He’s locked in. He’s all business. You never see the Phil Mickleson thumbs up to the masses or a Rickie Fowler selfie session. It’s just not his style. “I understand that’s my look. I try and be natural. So I try and be how I am all the time. And that’s kind of how I am all the time,â€ Cantlay shrugs. “I was walking in this morning and somebody said, ‘it can’t be that bad, can it?’ And I don’t even realize that’s the look on my face. I was in a great mood this morning. “But I feel like if I tried to be any way else, it wouldn’t be me. I’d be trying to force it. So I just try and be me out there. I definitely am focused and intent on what I’m doing. And I think that’s part of me and I think that’s part of why I have success.â€ And he had plenty of success on Sunday. His 8-under 64 is the best ever final round by a winner at the Memorial. It pushed him to 19-under 269. Only Tom Lehman (268 in 1994) has been lower over four rounds. He joined Tiger Woods as the only former Nicklaus award winner to win Nicklaus’ tournament. Cantlay is not surprised though. Well he is surprised … but only that he hasn’t won more. This was a guy who spent eons as the world’s best amateur and was touted as better than Jordan Spieth in the junior years. The delay was heavily due to a serious back injury that killed almost three years for him. But once he came back healthy and won, he thought he’d keep winning. “I definitely feel like I’ve had a lot of close calls since my last win. I’m a little surprised it’s taken me this long,â€ Cantlay said. “I really did (think the first win would open the floodgates). I’ve played a lot of really good golf, a lot of really solid golf. And so I think I was closer than it seems. So maybe this one will do it.â€ Maybe it will indeed. And if it does both Patrick and Jack will be smiling.

Doug Ghim taking advantage of second chanceDoug Ghim taking advantage of second chance

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda - Doug Ghim didn't begin his rookie PGA TOUR season exactly as planned. Three made cuts in 11 starts, with just one top-25 finish. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hiatus. RELATED: Full leaderboard | Featured Groups Ghim secured his first TOUR card with a gutsy up-and-down on the 72nd hole of the 2019 Korn Ferry Tour Championship, punctuated by an emotional fist-pump that resonated across the golf world. "I was so glad to make it (to the TOUR), but there wasn't much time for me to reflect on what the differences were," Ghim said. "Seeing guys like Will Zalatoris and Davis Riley and Scottie Scheffler doing as well as they have done, I didn't have that type of success for me to feel settled in. Kind of just barely made it, and all of a sudden I was running on fumes and trying to compete against even better players on harder golf courses." The hiatus gave Ghim a chance to refocus and experiment, both with his swing and equipment. The results have shown. The 24-year-old arrived at this week's Bermuda Championship with two top-25s in his last three starts, and he has maintained the momentum early at Port Royal Golf Club. Ghim carded an opening-round, 7-under 64 - all seven birdies coming in his final 12 holes - to stand one back of early leader Peter Malnati. In a normal season, Ghim's 184th-place finish on the 2019-20 FedExCup would have necessitated a return to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, with no guarantee of maintaining TOUR status. But with an adjusted eligibility policy ensuring that all 2019-20 TOUR members maintained TOUR status in 2020-21, Ghim earned a second life of sorts. Entering the Bermuda Championship at No. 70 on the 2020-21 FedExCup, the 2017 U.S. Amateur runner up is maximizing the situation. "The comeback to golf, the four or five events that I got to play before the (2019-20) season was over were huge for me ... it gave me confidence, because I saw everything going in the right direction," Ghim said. "And the idea that everyone starts back at zero was amazing for me, because it's really hard to come back into a season where you're (184th) in the FedExCup and trying to make the Playoffs from there. "Even if I was playing great, you already feel like you're way behind. So it was a nice refresher to get to (the Safeway Open) and see everyone at zero, play well, and be in a good position right off the bat." During the hiatus, Ghim changed to a set of clubs similar to those he played in college - "similar feels, similar shafts and everything." He started working with a new mental coach, striving to view things from a fresh perspective. The University of Texas alum has always maintained an appreciation for the opportunity to play golf for a living. His parents, Jeff and Susan, each immigrated from South Korea and later met in Chicago - Susan was a flight attendant; Jeff worked in architecture after serving in the South Korea military. They worked hard to support their son's dreams, making use of twilight rates at public courses and the American Junior Golf Association's grant program. Now Ghim is living out his dream on the PGA TOUR - and positioned to chase a title on the shores of Bermuda. "It was nice to get away and try to realize that I had a great opportunity to be here on TOUR, and not put too much pressure on myself," Ghim said. "I knew that if I could just play the way that I know how to play, without comparing myself to anyone else, I'll be fine. "To be able to start back fresh, it kind of feels like the rookie year that I want to have so far, playing a lot better and obviously having a better attitude going into it. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."

Quick look at the Puerto Rico OpenQuick look at the Puerto Rico Open

Opportunity knocks in beautiful Puerto Rico this week, as Grande Reserve Country Club once again hosts a bevy of PGA TOUR players looking to push their seasons to greater heights. Core golf fans know it is weeks like these where players often come of age. Sure they’re not in Mexico City at a World Golf Championship, but some of the 120 players in Puerto Rico certainly will be in the future. Those with an eye on the FedExCup Playoffs know a few points here in this vibrant Caribbean destination could make all the difference, not to mention the two-year winner’s exemption and a spot in the upcoming PLAYERS Championship (if not already exempt) that are both up for grabs as well. RELATED: Power Rankings | Trainer set for Puerto Rico Open defense | No joke: Trainer dabbles in sitcom writing THREE PLAYERS TO PONDER THE FLYOVER The par-5 18th was the third easiest hole at Grande Reserve last season, playing to a 4.830 average, including 4.4 on Sunday, meaning those pushing down the stretch know an opportunity awaits. At 630 yards, it’s no pushover, but it did yield three eagles and 120 birdies last season. The hole borders the “Ensenada” Bay, which plays downwind. The two fairway bunkers on the right are very much in play off the tee, so players favor the left side. The risk of going for the green in two comes with the risk of using too much club, as recovery shots from behind the green can be very costly. WEATHER CHECK From meteorologist Joe Halvorson: Thursday will be breezy once again, with moisture levels becoming a bit more enhanced. This will allow for an increase in the shower coverage mainly prior to sunrise and after 4 p.m., along with potential that a few of these showers produce brief heavy rainfall. Showers will remain a possibility on Friday and Saturday, but a drying trend should keep the coverage fairly sparse – especially Friday afternoon through Saturday. Shower chances are expected to return Sunday afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. For the latest weather news from Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, check out the PGA TOUR Weather Hub. SOUND CHECK Just in time for Puerto Rico… it’s a great course for me as evidenced by me doing well there last year. It’s been a long 10 months of struggling, but I’m just happy to be hitting the ball straight again… now that I’m hitting the right shots and missing in a narrower window I have a chance. BY THE NUMBERS 16 – Number of PGA TOUR rookies in the Puerto Rico Open field. There has not been a rookie winner through 18 events in this PGA TOUR season, the longest stretch to start a season since 2009, when rookies went winless the entire season. Three of the last nine winners here were rookies, so perhaps the drought will be broken. 5 – Number of Australians in the field. Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman and Adam Scott have brought their country three wins in the last six weeks, so maybe it is worth keeping an eye on Cameron Davis, Rhein Gibson, Cameron Percy, John Senden and Robert Allenby this week. 22 – Number of missed cuts for Martin Trainer since he won last season’s Puerto Rico Open. Trainer is a great character and broke a long drought last week at The Genesis Invitational, having kept a great perspective despite going through a big slump since his win. He’s most definitely someone to root for. He also has designs on being a comedy writer! SCATTERSHOTS Springboard to Stardom: Since the tournament’s inception in 2008, the Puerto Rico Open has helped elevate the careers of several PGA TOUR stars with strong play, including the likes of Jason Day, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Emiliano Grillo. In his second season on TOUR, Day finished T2 in Puerto Rico, his best finish in his first 39 starts. Now he holds 12 TOUR wins, including a PLAYERS Championship and PGA Championship. Finau won his lone TOUR event at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open; since then, Finau has accumulated 28 top-10s, including six runner-ups. Past sponsor exemptions include Spieth (2013) and Koepka (2014). Spieth earned Special Temporary Membership soon after his runner-up finish in 2013 and was named PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year thereafter; He has since won the FedExCup (2015) and accumulated 11 career PGA TOUR wins, including three majors; Koepka, currently No. 2 in the world, has seven PGA TOUR wins, including four majors. Bryson DeChambeau lost in a playoff at the 2017 Puerto Rico Open and went on to win his first PGA TOUR title later that season at the John Deere Classic, his first of now five TOUR wins. After finishing runner-up at the 2015 Puerto Rico Open, Emiliano Grillo won the 2015 Safeway Open and was voted PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year.  Keep an eye on University of Georgia junior Davis Thompson. He’s No. 4 in the world amateur golf ranking and finished T23 at the RSM Classic in the fall. He was the Medalist at the prestigious Western Amateur and recently won the Jones Cup by nine shots. He shot 203 to set the scoring record at a tournament where past champs include TOUR winners Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Kyle Stanley, Corey Conners and DJ Trahan. Thompson will be pulling double duty on the island, as he will play in a college event in Puerto Rico on Sunday and Monday before teeing it up in the Puerto Rico Open. Oh, and his father Todd – he’s the tournament director for The RSM Classic and will caddie for his son. The Puerto Rico Open and non-profit organization Good Sports delivered $1 million in sports equipment and monetary contributions to 33 non-profits that benefit thousands of kids in Puerto Rico. The contribution was achieved thanks to Kids Pro Fun, a tournament campaign to positively impact the lives in the community. The campaign, supported by individuals, corporate donors and friends of the PGA TOUR, exceeded its goal and reached the largest donation and delivery made by Good Sports.
