Next generation Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls debut on PGA TOUR

The ProV1 and the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open have become synonymous. The original ProV1 prototypes were introduced to TOUR players at the 2000 Shriners. Forty-seven players put the ball in play that week, including winner Billy Andrade. It was a week that revolutionized golf. Now Titleist is introducing its latest ProV1 prototypes this week at TPC Summerlin. The introduction of these latest prototypes follows a two-year development process. Making new products available for TOUR players to use in competition, otherwise known as TOUR seeding, is the final stage of research and development before a product is released to the public. It's a very exciting—yet stressful—time for the TOUR truck's support teams. A good portion of the TOUR staff was sent samples to try in early-to-mid September, but this is the first week they'll be testing the new balls in tournament conditions. Team Titleist also is in the process of seeding the new TSi metal woods. That may sound overwhelming, but it makes a ton of sense to get players testing new woods and balls at the same time. The performance of each is dependent on the other, so to dial both in at the same time saves a ton of steps. Thus far, the buzz around the new ball has been very positive. A few notes: • Cameron Tringale shot 59 with the new Pro V1x while testing at home. • Cam Smith started his Monday practice round with three consecutive birdies and added one more to that total to start his Tuesday round. • Greg Chalmers, playing the new Pro V1x, said: “I played nine holes with the new Pro V1x today, and if it performs in tournament conditions like today then you guys have officially built the perfect golf ball. Long, great flight, and better feel on all shots but particularly around the greens. Stays on the face longer and feels so good. Spins way more on chipping. Can I switch to that ball this week?" • Jimmy Walker, playing the new Pro V1, said: “It's as fast as the [Pro V1] Left Dash X off the driver and feels very soft around the greens. I still have more testing to do but so far so good.” • Rory Sabbatini, the only player in this week's field who also played the original ProV1 at the 2000 Shriners, switched from the yellow Pro V1 ’19 straight into the new Pro V1x this week. No word yet from the folks in Fairhaven as to when the latest iteration of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x will come to retail, but with seeding underway this week, it's safe to say we'll be hearing more on that front soon.

Billy Horschel leads at Torrey Pines with Jon Rahm best on South CourseBilly Horschel leads at Torrey Pines with Jon Rahm best on South Course

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Top-ranked Jon Rahm closed with an eagle on the tougher South Course at Torrey Pines for a 6-under 66 on Wednesday, trailing leader Billy Horschel by three strokes after the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open. RELATED: Full leaderboard | Rickie Fowler hits all 18 greens, shoots 66 at Farmers | Dustin Johnson shoots 68 on South Course after long layoff Horschel shot a bogey-free 9-under 63 on the North Course and led Michael Thompson by one stroke. Of the 30 players who shot 67 or better, 26 played the North. Rahm’s was the best score on the South by one over Luke List, Peter Malnati and Cameron Tringale. The players switch courses Thursday and play the final two rounds on the South. Taking advantage of the North’s shorter distances and more forgiving rough, Horschel made five birdies on the front nine, highlighted by a 25-foot putt on the par-4 second hole. The 35-year-old from Florida is seeking his first non-match play victory on the PGA TOUR since April 2018. “I told my caddie, ‘Let’s just go out there, no expectations, and just enjoy,’” Horschel said. “And I think we did a really good job of that. My game is in a really good spot.” Thompson also played bogey-free, putting him one shot ahead of Stephan Jaeger and Kevin Tway. Rahm’s strong start in San Diego is no surprise: The world No. 1 got his first PGA TOUR victory at Torrey Pines in 2017, and he won last year’s U.S. Open on the South Course for his first major. “Doesn’t shock me,” Horschel said when told of Rahm’s impressive round. “I think he won a U.S. Open on that course, last I checked. He’s a really good player. There’s a reason why he’s the No. 1 player in the world.” Rickie Fowler, Doug Ghim and Francesco Molinari also shot 66s, all on the North. Rahm said the conditions were “relatively easy,” even on the South. He stumbled with two bogeys on the back nine before finishing strong, crushing a 280-yard approach shot on the par-5 18th to 12 feet for eagle. “It was probably one of the best swings I’ll make all year,” Rahm said. “That 3-wood was absolutely perfect.” Horschel tied for 36th at the Sony Open in Hawaii two weeks ago, but he nearly had to skip Torrey Pines because of a persistent upper-body muscular injury that has required daily treatment. He didn’t decide to play for sure until he felt good when he woke up on Wednesday morning. “Thankfully (with) all the work we’ve done and everything I felt, it never got any tighter,” Horschel said. “It’s actually felt like it’s a little bit looser right now. Hopefully we got through the tough of it and now we’re on the downhill side and I don’t have to worry about it anymore.” Horschel, who won the BMW PGA Championship in England last September on what is now called the DP World Tour, had two top-10 finishes in his first 11 career starts at Torrey Pines. His excellent start came two days after he dressed up as a human target and allowed kids to hit balls at him in a stunt widely enjoyed on social media. Thompson is seeking his first win since July 2020, and he played another excellent round after finishing in a fifth-place tie at the Sony Open. Thompson is a PGA TOUR veteran, but he is getting plenty of double-takes around the TOUR while rocking a thick, long beard that he started growing before last year’s playoffs. “I haven’t been mistaken for anybody,” said Thompson, whose wife told him to keep the look. “It’s just more people think I’m a rookie because I look so different. You know, I’ve probably gotten more comments of, ‘What hockey team do you play for?’” The Farmers Insurance Open being played Wednesday through Saturday to avoid a television conflict with the NFL’s two conference championship games on Sunday.

Kevin Kisner: DEAN & DELUCA InvitationalKevin Kisner: DEAN & DELUCA Invitational

A strong short game and putter powered Kevin Kisner to his second PGA TOUR title at the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational. Using Callaway’s Mack Daddy 2 and MD3 wedges and an Odyssey White Hot Pro #7 putter, Kisner finished second in the field in Strokes Gained: Around the Green (plus 4.116) and Strokes Gained: Putting (plus 5.702) at Colonial Country Club. In terms of new gear, Kisner recently put Callaway’s Epic hybrid (18 degrees) in play at the Wells Fargo Championship. With a Neutral directional bias and -1 loft, the hybrid has a strong ball flight that’s comparable to most 5-woods. The Epic hybrid employs the same technologies as the GBB Epic fairway woods, including an ultra-light triaxial carbon crown that has a thinner wall thickness and lighter weight than traditional composite crown. The Internal Standing Wave in the hybrid is similar to what’s found in the Epic Pro iron and is comprised of Metal-Injected Molding tungsten that’s 1.8-times heavier than steel. The substantial weight lowers the club’s center of gravity, improving the forgiveness and launch characteristics. Here’s a look at Kisner’s entire Callaway setup. Driver: Callaway Great Big Bertha (Aldila NV 2KXV Green 65TX shaft) 3-wood: Callaway GBB Epic (Aldila NV 2KXV Green 75TX shaft), 13.5 degrees Hybrid: Callaway Epic (Matrix Ozik Altus Hybrid X shaft), 18 degrees Utility iron: Callaway Apex UT (3-iron; Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 Tour 120TX shaft) Irons: Callaway Apex Pro (4-9; Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 120TX shafts) Wedges: Callaway Mack Daddy 2 (47-11S and 52-12C degrees; Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 WV125 shafts), Callaway MD3 Milled (58 degrees; Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 WV125 shaft) Putter: Odyssey White Hot Pro #7 Ball: Titleist Pro V1
