Monday Qualifiers: Sanderson Farms Championship

The Sanderson Farms Championship qualifier ended Monday in a 3-for-2 playoff between PGA TOUR veteran Kyle Reifers, Quade Cummins, and Wilson Furr. Cummins, a former standout at the University of Oklahoma, made eagle to clinch the first playoff spot after bogeying the 17th hole of regulation at Deerfield Golf Club in Canton, Mississippi. “The 17th is one of the tougher holes out there, and with how the greens were, you’re going to pay if you’re out of position,” Cummins told PGATOUR.COM after the round. “I was very stressed after that bogey because I knew 5 under had a small chance to qualify. Luckily it held throughout the day to give me a chance in a playoff.” Reifers birdied the fifth hole of the playoff to earn the final spot and while eliminating Furr. Grant Hirschman and Sam Saunders were co-medalists after shooting 65 respectively. Hirschman, a fellow Oklahoma Sooner alumni, shot 6 under on the back nine after a slow start to the day. “I hit really nice on the front nine but just couldn’t get a putt to fall. I made an eagle putt on 10 that changed the momentum of the round, seeing a putt roll in and then get to -3 thru 10. I kept the pedal down on the back nine and stayed aggressive,” Hirschman told PGATOUR.COM. Hirschman is coming off his first full season on the Korn Ferry Tour and is starting to hone his craft as a professional golfer. “I’d say I learned to stick true to my own game and not shy away from that. It’s easy to chase speed or change your game to match what seems right. In reality, what makes me a great golfer is sticking to my own game and game plan week in and week out.” Qualifiers Grant Hirschman (65) Age: 26 College: University of Oklahoma Turned pro: 2018 PGA TOUR starts: 1 Cuts made: 1 PGA TOUR earnings: $14,190 Notes: Hirschman will play his first PGA TOUR event since the 2018 FedEx St. Jude Classic. Ten of the top 20 players in the official Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings are South Korean as it stands — and the number is only increasing. According to PGA coach Brian Mogg, a fiercely competitive society married with an intrinsic dedication to getting better has fostered a new generation of women that are revolutionizing the game. “Koreans are the most disciplined people on earth,” Mogg, who runs a golf academy in Seoul, told CNN Sport last year. “You tell them to do something but they don’t just do it, they do it to the nth degree, and they do it hard and passionate. When you put hard work and discipline together you’re going to create some success.” Park has won $2,161,005 in prize money

After big payday, Im’s caddie eyes return as playerAfter big payday, Im’s caddie eyes return as player

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Albin Choi always dreamed of winning on the PGA TOUR. He just hoped it would be as a player. Choi got his first PGA TOUR win Sunday, but it was as a caddie for The Honda Classic champion Sungjae Im. Choi was a fortuitous fill-in on Im’s bag. It was Choi’s first week caddying for his friend, whom he met during Im’s lone season on the Korn Ferry Tour. Ki Taek Lee, a former college teammate of Jon Rahm’s, will be Im’s caddie for the next two weeks. Lee, who has caddied for K.J. Choi, was on Im’s bag at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship but missed last week to attend a wedding. Related: Monday Finish: Im breaks through | Im withstands pressure to win The Honda Classic Now Choi hopes the experience – as well as the paycheck – can help him continue his professional career as an injury to his left wrist heals. “Just seeing what it takes to be a PGA TOUR winner and being there inside the ropes, it was really good,â€ Choi said Sunday. “I haven’t felt that in a very long time.â€ Im won The Honda Classic by one stroke over Mackenzie Hughes. Im and Hughes both shot 66, matching Sunday’s lowest score, while playing in the fourth-to-last group. Choi was a groomsman in Hughes’ wedding. “That was really crazy,â€ Hughes said about the pairing. “I thought it was kind of a dream come true because my caddie is a good friend of mine, and I get to walk with Albin who I’ve known since junior golf days. It was a lot of fun. We had a few good laughs out there.” Choi, 27, is a former Canadian Amateur champion and was the 2013 Atlantic Coast Player of the Year while playing for North Carolina State (he won the award one year after someone named Brooks Koepka earned that honor). Choi turned pro in 2013 and won two years later on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada. He finished sixth on the Order of Merit that year. He’s played the past four seasons on the Korn Ferry Tour, collecting five top-10s in 110 career Korn Ferry Tour starts. Choi, who lives in Jupiter, Florida, lost his status after finishing 117th on the regular-season points list last year. He started caddying at nearby Old Palm Golf Club about four months ago while nursing a wrist injury. This was his first time caddying on the PGA TOUR. He had experience at PGA National, though. Choi got his Korn Ferry Tour card with a T14 finish in the 2015 Q-School at PGA National. “I know how hard it is to navigate your way through this golf course. … I just felt like the experience kind of helped me today,â€ Choi said. “From a player standpoint, I kind of knew what he was feeling at certain times, and I felt like I could kind of draw upon my experiences to help him out today and to keep his head in the right place.â€

There’s nothing nicer for an overnight leader of a golf tournament to extend his margin over the rest of the field before even having to hit a shot. For Brooks Koepka at the 2019 PGA Championship, it happened before he even woke up on Friday. Koepka’s closest challenger (by far) on Thursday, Danny Lee, shot a six-under-par 64 at Bethpage Black to start his event.
