Monday Finish: Fall wins, FedExCup superlatives and the cycle of success on TOUR

In the final round of The RSM Classic, Web.com Tour graduate Austin Cook shoots a final-round 67 for a four-shot victory over J.J. Spaun at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Resort. Welcome to the Monday Finish, where Cook broke through in just his 14th PGA TOUR start, and his fourth with a TOUR card, to end the eight-tournament fall swing of the 2017-2018 season. We now get a six-week break before the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. Herewith, some key takeaways from the fall. FIVE OBSERVATIONS 1. Fall success doesn’t just lead to FedExCup rewards; the reverse is also true. Justin Thomas and Pat Perez parlayed fall victories into career firsts last season, Thomas winning the FedExCup and Perez making it to his first TOUR Championship. But that, in turn, seems to have led to more wins this fall, Perez at the CIMB Classic at TPC Kuala Lumpur, Thomas at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES, a new event in South Korea. Winning breeds winning, and now others hope to follow their example. “The FedExCup is a big deal to me,â€ said OHL Classic at Mayakoba champion Patton Kizzire, who leads the FedExCup with 659 points. “… I’m really excited to get a leg up and be No. 1 right now and be able to really try to push for that TOUR Championship.â€ 2. The “great eightâ€ fall tournaments change the narrative and change lives. Already we’ve seen four first-time winners this season: Ryan Armour at the Sanderson Farms Championship; Patrick Cantlay at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open; Kizzire at Mayakoba; and Cook at The RSM. Only one of those, Cook, was a rookie, although the former Arkansas Razorback was plenty familiar with Sea Island, where he competed for four years at the SEC Championships. 3. There’s still plenty of variation among TOUR winners. Height: The 5-foot-7 Cook broke through at Sea Island one week after 6-foot-5 Kizzire scored his own maiden victory at Mayakoba. Age: Perez and Armour are each 41; Justin Rose is 37; and Thomas, Cantlay and Cook are 24, 25 and 26, respectively. Playing style: Armour ranked 74th of 75 players in driving distance but made 441 feet, 3 inches worth of putts, 12th most by a winner in the ShotLink era, to win the Sanderson Farms. Brendan Steele was first in driving distance (327.8 yards) and strokes gained: off-the-tee (1.541) as he won the Safeway Open. 4. The Web.com Tour continues to be a great predictor for the fall. Consider Cook’s six tournaments before he won The RSM: T9 Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft Nabisco T11 DAP Championship T8 Web.com Tour Championship T25 Sanderson Farms Championship (PGA TOUR) T20 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open (PGA TOUR) T50 OHL Classic at Mayakoba (PGA TOUR) 5. If you want to find a future star on TOUR, look to The RSM. Kevin Kisner, the 2016 champ, went undefeated (2-0-2) at the recent Presidents Cup and tied for fourth at Sea Island this time around. Where will Cook, the fourth straight first-time winner at The RSM, go from here? And what about Aaron Wise? The University of Oregon and Web.com Tour graduate is trending in the right direction after a T13 finish over the weekend, his best result in five starts this fall. The Web.com Tour already has its first breakout star on the PGA TOUR in Cook. Is Wise next? FIVE INSIGHTS 1. Cook’s 23 birdies led The RSM, and he also led in strokes gained: tee-to-green. He went 49 straight holes without a bogey (from the first hole of the first round to the 13th in the third); hit 60 of 72 greens in regulation to tie for second in that stat; and is the fifth player since the start of the 2015-’16 season to have just two over-par holes while winning a 72-hole tournament. 2. Odd stat of the week: Kevin Streelman finished T17 at The RSM after making just one bogey over 72 holes. He led the field in Scrambling (91.67%) along with Cook. 3. Another week on TOUR, another record broken. Cook’s 194 total through three rounds was a new tournament record, breaking by two the 196 shot by the last two winners of The RSM, Mac Hughes last year and Kisner the year before. 4. Of the eight former University of Georgia golfers in the field, three finished T4: Brian Harman, Chris Kirk (the 2014 champion) and Kisner (the 2016 champion). 5. Armour was the fall’s biggest surprise winner at 311th in the Official World Golf Ranking when he won the Sanderson Farms. Cook wasn’t far behind at 302nd when he won The RSM. TOP 3 VIDEOS 1. What a way to finish! 2. Don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t judge a shot by the reaction. 3. Cameron Tringale performs under pressure.

Matt Fitzpatrick sent thank-you email to standard bearer after 2013 U.S. Amateur win at BrooklineMatt Fitzpatrick sent thank-you email to standard bearer after 2013 U.S. Amateur win at Brookline

BROOKLINE, Mass. – After winning the 2013 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club, Matt Fitzpatrick sent a thank-you email to his standard bearer. Malcolm Herbert was that standard bearer. Herbert was on-site Sunday to support Fitzpatrick as the Englishman secured a one-stroke victory at the U.S. Open at The Country Club, his first PGA TOUR title and first major championship title. Herbert walked inside the ropes as standard bearer for Fitzpatrick’s final match in 2013, a 4-and-3 victory over Oliver Goss. Fitzpatrick drained a winning 5-footer for par on the 33rd hole. Herbert, who hails from nearby Milton, Massachusetts, grew emotional upon watching Fitzpatrick make par on the 72nd hole Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler at 6-under total. The positive experience with Fitzpatrick nine years prior had inspired Herbert to pursue college golf. He played at Tufts University, and although he wasn’t a starter on the team, he was a co-captain as a senior. He recently graduated with a degree in psychology and has plans to work in the golf industry. Being inside the ropes for Fitzpatrick’s first win at Brookline made him a fan for life. This week, that fandom came full circle. “it’s been a while since 2013, but we’ve been Fitzpatrick fans ever since,” said Herbert on Sunday evening. “He’s an amazing player and an even better dude. If I hadn’t seen high-level golf up close as a 13-year-old, I wouldn’t have played high school golf, definitely wouldn’t have played college golf, and wouldn’t be working in the golf world next year. “I owe a lot of the best moments of the last eight years to Matt for inspiring me to take after the game with a passion and work hard. It’s a true full-circle event to see him win.” For the record, Herbert wasn’t surprised to see Fitzpatrick prevail once again at The Country Club, joining Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win a U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open at the same course. (Nicklaus won the 1961 U.S. Amateur and 1972 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links.) “He rises to the occasion every time the golf course gets tough,” Herbert said. On a traditional, demanding test at Brookline – where he was one of two players to card four rounds of par or better – Fitzpatrick did just that.

United Airlines, PGA TOUR team up to provide travel grants to 50+ HBCU golf programsUnited Airlines, PGA TOUR team up to provide travel grants to 50+ HBCU golf programs

Each school receives $10,000 for student-athletes, coaches and equipment to fly United and compete in tournaments across the country Program addresses one of the biggest barriers to golf programs’ growth and success: limited access to funds for air travel CHICAGO – United Airlines along with the PGA TOUR today announced that United will award 51 golf teams at Historically Black Colleges and Universities with more than half a million dollars in grants, divided equally among the schools, to fund travel for golf tournaments and recruiting efforts. The donation is part of United Airlines and the PGA TOUR’s shared commitment to diversify and grow the sport and provide resources that allow HBCUs to recruit and compete at the highest levels of collegiate golf. Each school will receive $10,000 in travel credits, enabling more than 250 student-athletes, coaches and their equipment to fly United to compete in high-profile tournaments that were previously out of reach. HBCU golf coaches attribute the lack of access to air travel among the greatest barriers to developing successful golf programs. “Removing barriers for HBCU students to have the same opportunities given to other collegiate athletes will open doors for countless young Black golfers to achieve their dreams and for HBCU golf programs to develop to their full potential,” said United President Brett Hart. “United is committed to advancing inclusion and racial equity and that begins with making meaningful mentorship and scholarship investments in the communities we serve.” These grants will allow each team the opportunity to attend more tournaments this season, including events like the prestigious PGA Works Collegiate Championship, Mardi Gras Golf Invitational and Black College Golf Coaches Association Houston National Invitational. Previously, many HBCU golf teams would not have the resources to compete at these events or would have to drive, which requires student-athletes to take multiple days away from school. “The golf program at Winston-Salem State University came back to the school for the first time in 10 years last fall. This year, the United Airlines grant will impact our program’s ability to travel tremendously,” said Winston-Salem State University Head Golf Coach Charles Penny, II. “It now allows for our program to consider more tournaments to play in the fall. Specifically, this past fall, we were only able to play one tournament due to limitations in our travel budget. This fall, we will be able to add close to four.” For the student-athletes, the opportunity to compete in more tournaments isn’t just about improving their game – the relationships they build off the course with mentors and golf and industry professionals can make a difference in their ability to pursue the sport as a career. “We are super grateful and excited to have the support of United Airlines to make for excellent and safe travel to our tournaments,” said Christyn Carr, a golfer at North Carolina A&T State University. “It gives us the freedom to compete in different states that we have not been able to go to before, and it allows us to have more time on the course than on the road. I’m looking forward to reaching new heights this semester, not only in our game but in our travel.” United is the “Official Airline of the PGA TOUR,” and the organization’s first sponsor to support the TOUR’s larger HBCU Grant Program. Developed in early 2021 by the TOUR’s HBCU task force, the program aims to leverage the TOUR’s partner network in order to offset the financial burdens many HBCU golf programs face. “On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I’d like to express my appreciation to longtime partner United Airlines for their support of HBCU golf programs and the many collegiate golfers who will benefit going forward,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “We have made a pledge to help diversify the landscape of competitive golf and this collaboration between United Airlines and these colleges and universities will be a significant step towards leveling the playing field and enhancing the student-athlete experience along the way.” In addition to travel grants, student athletes will have access to mentorship and career coaching from United employees. This summer, United will work with golf influencer Roger Steele along with select PGA TOUR professionals to showcase the depth and skill HBCU golf programs offer across the country through a four-part digital content series. To keep up with the HBCU golf programs travel journeys this season, follow @United and @PGATOUR on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. United’s travel grants through the PGA TOUR’s HBCU Grant Program will serve 51 current golf programs offered at HBCUs, including: MEN’S GOLF Alabama A&M University Alabama State University Bishop State Community College Bluefield State College Chicago State University Elizabeth City State University Fayetteville State University Fisk University Florida A&M University Howard University Jarvis Christian College Johnson C.
