Masters scraps par 3 contest, adds split tees

Ryo Ishikawa … Life inside and outside the ropes grew complicated in 2016 for the former wunderkind. Right around the time he got married, he was dealing with lumbar discopathy, so he shut it down for a few months. Still fully exempt on the PGA TOUR at the time, he then prevailed in his second start post-injury. The victory occurred in his native Japan in late August of that year. A T2 and a solo third followed immediately. After returning to the TOUR early in the 2016-17 season, his form didn’t translate and he lost his status despite 20 starts on a medical extension. The veteran of 145 TOUR starts hasn’t played on the circuit since until The ZOZO Championship. Now 28 years of age, he’s third on the Japan Golf Tour’s money list with two wins among eight top 20s this season. He’s also second in putts per GIR and third in scoring. Nate Lashley … It’s been a remarkable year for the 36-year-old who started last season on a Minor Medical Extension. After securing conditional status with strong play early, he was outside the top 125 in the FedExCup when he broke through at the Rocket Mortgage Classic where he got in as the last man in the 156-man field. He did OK the rest of the way but he’s back to his noise-making ways. He opened this season with a T3 at Greenbrier and just finished T20 at Nine Bridges where he co-led the field in par-5 scoring. Vaughn Taylor … It’s possible that he’s still pinching himself for how the value of one victory, and an unlikely one at that, continues to pay it forward. It was in February of 2016 when he gained entry as the sixth-to-last man in the field of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, via Past Champion status no less, and prevailed for his first PGA TOUR title in 11 years. That not only regained him fully exempt status for the first time since 2012, it’s also granted him time and space to stretch his career. In his age-43 season of 2018-19, he finished 49th in the FedExCup with four top 10s among 20 cuts made. That’s yielded appearances in his first two events in Asia. Although he placed T60 at Nine Bridges last week, he’s a better fit for cozier Narashino CC this week. Kevin Streelman … He’s hung up seven top 15s since February, but with a T4 at the Sanderson Farms Championship and a T12 at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES as his only cuts made in his last seven starts, he’s been a tease of late. It’s also possible that his early success this season reflects but a spike with his putter. The flat stick usually is his nemesis, but he ranked third in putts per GIR at Nine Bridges and sits 24th in Strokes Gained: Putting with 10 measured rounds contributing. The 40-year-old also co-led the field in South Korea in par-5 scoring. Shaun Norris … The South African was a long-time regular on his native Sunshine Tour before joining the Japan Golf Tour in 2016. Since, he’s won exactly once in each of the last four seasons on the JGTO, most recently in the first weekend of this month. He also placed T2 in last week’s Japan Open to give him five top 10s in his last six starts. He finished seventh on the circuit’s money list in 2017, second in 2018 and sits fifth in this season’s chase. The 37-year-old also ranks eighth in greens in regulation and seventh in putts per GIR. AUGUSTA, Georgia – Tiger Woods was always told he was the chosen one but only now does he fully believe he’s a walking miracle. Less than a year after back fusion surgery finally released him from years of pain – Woods is not only back at Augusta National for the first time since 2015 – he’s firmly in the mix to win. That is according to all of his peers and the majority of pundits. Woods is the favorite in many circles. “He’s got a great chance. Look at how he’s played the last few weeks. He’s had four wins here. He’s very comfortable around this golf course, and his game is right there,â€� Rory McIlroy said. “Any time Tiger Woods is healthy and in this sort of form, he’s dangerous at any golf tournament. But given his history here, I think even more so.â€� In his last two starts on the PGA TOUR Woods was runner up and T5 – he felt the cauldron of contention in both. But can he claim PGA TOUR win number 80 on the major championship stage? With his swing speed at near unbelievable levels … anything is possible. It is easily the most amazing aspect of this version of his comeback – the force in which he’s been able to swing the club again. Woods has the fastest recorded swing on TOUR this season at 129.2 miles per hour and his average club head speed of 121.9 miles per hour is fourth on TOUR. It has some players joking with Woods that they need to go under the knife to fuse their own backs for more distance. “The reason why I say I’m a walking miracle is that I don’t know if anyone who has had a lower back fusion that can swing the club as fast as I can swing it,â€� Woods said. “That’s incredible. I went from a person who really had a hard time getting up, walking around, sitting down, anything, to now swinging the club 129. That is a miracle, isn’t it?â€� Woods admits he never expected this sort of result. He thought he’d have a nice comfortable life but was resigned to not being able to generate his old speeds. A year ago he could barely sit at the Champions Dinner. He was trying cortisone shots, epidurals … but in his own words his back was fried. “But all of a sudden I have this pop and my body and my speed’s back and my timing. I’m hitting speeds that I hit in my prime,â€� he continued. “That’s what’s the shocking thing, is I didn’t think I would ever reach north of 120, and I’m cruising at 120. “So that part is very exciting because I know that if I can maintain this, I can play out here for a very long time and be able to have the length to get around pretty much any of the golf courses.â€� This week’s course has always been kind to Woods. With wins in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005 and seven top-6 results in nine starts since his last triumph Augusta National is certainly a place he could rekindle the old magic and claim TOUR win number 80. Woods likened the hype to that in 2001 when he came to the Masters with three straight major wins and in search of the famous “Tiger Slamâ€�. “I have four rounds to play, so let’s just kind of slow down,â€� Woods smiled. “I got to go play and then let the chips fall where they may, and hopefully I end up on top. But I got a lot of work to do between now and then.â€�

ATLANTA – After torching Medinah en route to a 3-stroke victory at the 2019 BMW Championship, and heading into the TOUR Championship with a 2-stroke lead, Justin Thomas switched driver shafts. Thomas had been using a Mitsubishi Diamana BF 60TX shaft in his Titleist drivers since 2017, the year he won the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. Even when he switched into a new TS3 driver (9.5 degrees) in 2018, it was still equipped with that same shaft. After winning the 2019 BMW Championship, however, Thomas was spotted by PGATOUR.COM on Wednesday at the TOUR Championship testing a new Mitsubishi Diamana ZF 60TX shaft in his driver. Thomas played a 9-hole practice on Wednesday using the new ZF shaft, then afterwards took off to the range to test the ZF against his old BF shaft. Apparently, he liked what he saw from the new ZF shaft, since Thomas put the shaft in play on Thursday. According to Mitsubishi, the company that makes both his old driver shaft and his new one, the ZF-series shafts “build on the success� of the BF-series shafts. The ZF shafts use a combination of MR-70 carbon fiber and Boron fiber to create a shaft that’s stronger in the tip and butt sections but softer in the middle of the shaft. This creates “better energy transfer and acceleration,� according to Mitsubishi. “Diamana ZF-series takes the signature ‘smooth’ bend profile that makes our BF-series the shaft of choice for so many players and pushes it in just the right places,� said Mark Gunther, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Mitsubishi, in a press release. “The result is a profile that makes ZF a little more explosive and easier to accelerate.� While Thomas has opted for the 60TX version of the ZF, like he did with his BF-series shafts, the new ZF will be available to the public in options ranging from 40 grams up to 80 grams in various flexes.
