For the second year in a row the Zurich Classic of New Orleans will shake it up on the PGA TOUR. Last year was the first time since 1981 that the TOUR implemented a partner’s game as an official event. Featuring foursomes and fourballs in alternating rounds, 80, two-man teams will battle it out again at TPC Louisiana for over $1 million and 400 FedExCup points EACH to the winners. If the second-year format wasn’t enough, the TOUR is introducing walk-up music to introduce the pairings on the first tee as well. This event will welcome 10 of the top 15 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, 13 previous winners from this season and will host the last four major champions. Remember PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO has the week off but the One & Done presented by SERVPRO is ready to go! The 80 pairs will get another crack at the 7,425-yard, Par-72 track designed by Pete Dye. Since becoming the host course for this event in 2005, TPC Louisiana has been annually run over by the TOUR’s best players. Not even the fantastic local food and drink can protect this layout as the winning scores are littered with birdies every April. There is a new wrinkle in the format this season as the best-ball and alternate shot sessions will flip rounds. Last year, alternate shot was Thursday and Saturday with best-ball on Friday and Sunday. This time around the final round will use alternate shot, the more difficult of the two formats, to decide the champion on Sunday. After seeing the early forecast, I type SUNDAY with great confidence! In the first incarnation of the partner’s event last year, the team of Jordan Spieth & Ryan Palmer and the then-team of Kyle Stanley & Ryan Ruffels both fired 66 for the best round of the week in alternate shot. The best-ball honors went to South African pair Retief Goosen & Tyrone Van Aswegen and vanquished playoff participants Kevin Kisner & Scott Brown with 60. TALES OF THE TAPE England’s Justin Rose torched TPC Louisiana to the tune of 22-under-par 266 to set the tournament record in 2015. He didn’t square a bogey in his last 66 holes and played his final 54 in 19-under. Weather played a big part in this winning formula as preferred lies were used in all four rounds as the course was soaked. The top 27 players posted exactly TWO rounds worse than par for the week. Usually a week of posting a double-digit total is good for the wallet. In 2015 it was good enough for T48. Mother Nature took over again in 2016 as the event was shortened to 54 holes yet finished on Monday. Brian Stuard, Byeong-Hun An and Jamie Lovemark all posted 15-under-par to force extra holes on the extra day. Stuard didn’t make a bogey on the week and his birdie on the second playoff hole gave him his first win on TOUR. In addition to finishing without a bogey he also didn’t miss a putt inside 10 feet on the pure greens. Stuard isn’t long off the tee by any definition but he navigated the weather delays and preferred lies to hold off the bigger hitting An and Lovemark. He was 79th in driving distance and T73 in fairways for the week. As I’ve noted in the table above, there was more than one way to hit the podium as partners last year. The winning pair avoided bogeys completely while their competitors in the playoff racked up a whopping 28 birdies. This is even more amazing considering that 25 of the 42 teams that made the cut couldn’t break par on Saturday in the alternate-shot format due to winds blowing 20-25 mph and gusts topping 30 mph. Smith & Blixt entered the final round with a four-shot lead before Kisner & Brown tied the event record for best-ball with 60 to force the playoff, albeit with preferred lies. There were only four, bogey-free rounds in the alternate shot format and half were recorded by the champions. Those who play closer to the hazard will find the better line to the green. Teams that pick and choose their spots to attack and lay off will be the ones looking to take home the trophy on Sunday. This will be the second Pete Dye test in three weeks (Harbour Town) and the third consecutive week on Bermuda (Miniverde) greens and that will favor the guys who didn’t pack it in after Augusta. With four Par-5 holes, rough at only two inches and greens in perfect conditions, there will be ample opportunities to score. The accurate will be rewarded as the greens classify below-average in square footage (5,225 on average) and are multi-tiered reinforcing that great shots will have great opportunities to score. Anytime gamers hear “Pete Dye course” many thoughts start running through their collective heads. Or at least should. This week is the exception, not the rule, as TPC Louisiana usually plays as one of the easier tracks on TOUR. Or will it? New Orleans, for once, isn’t completely soaked. The forecast, as of Tuesday, called for some rain on Thursday yet sunshine and below-normal temperatures for the rest of the week. Usually this time of year thunderstorms are the norm, not the exception, so I’m of the opinion scores will creep up. With less humidity and cooler temperatures, the ball won’t go as far. It also won’t plug so it will give the accurate players perhaps an advantage. The pros always mention they would love to have firm and fast but the absence of wind after Thursday suggests that won’t be the case. There are too many angles to count this week when assessing possible options. I’ll point out that EVERBODY’S favorite pair from last year, Justin Rose & Henrik Stenson, missed the cut. So did Jason Day & Rickie Fowler. So did Daniel Berger and Thomas Pieters. I’m going to obviously look at who is back again together for a second run because that suggests the partnership was working. Jordan Spieth played with Ryan Palmer last year because he lost a bet. They’re back again after finishing fourth last year. #Clues. I don’t think omitting players who have been hot the last three weeks is a sane formula either as hot golf is hot golf. Course Ratings: 2011 is the only year that the course played over par. It has ranked inside of the top 12 easiest courses annually since. Rob Bolton’s Power Rankings will give you more juice for the week so make sure you stop by. It’s also who I trust with the weather each week so pay attention! GREENSBORO, N.C. — Russell Henley shot an 8-under 62, his lowest round in more than two years, to take the lead Thursday in the suspended first round of the Wyndham Championship. Henley birdied three of his final four holes for a two-stroke lead over Sung Kang, Ted Potter Jr., Chris Kirkand, Hudson Swofford, Scott Piercy and Michael Thompson in the PGA TOUR’s final Regular Season event. Adam Hadwin also was 6 under, but had two holes left when darkness ended play. A storm halted play for 2 hours, 7 minutes, with 30 players unable to finish. Past champion Webb Simpson and Kevin Kisner led a group of ten another stroke behind at 65 at Sedgefield Country Club, where many competitors are scrambling to make it into top 125 to advance to the FedExCup Playoffs that start next week at THE NORTHERN TRUST. Henley, at No. 46 in the standings, had no worries about the postseason, but came out fast with a bogey-free round in chasing his first PGA TOUR victory in four years. He moved in front with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 15th before closing with birdies on 17 and 18, the last with a 20-foot putt. He had with his lowest round on the TOUR since a career-low 61 at the John Deere Classic in 2019. Henley has played some solid golf of late. He was tied for the 36-hole lead at the U.S. Open in June, then had two straight top-20 finishes before missing the cut at the Open Championship. He returned this week, hoping he can carry his strong play to the end. “I haven’t won in years, so I feel like as well as I’ve been playing, I feel like I’ve underachieved a little bit,” he said. “My mindset,” Henley continued, “is I feel if I can play my game, play my normal game, then I can maybe give myself a chance and that’s kind of where I’m at.” There are several big names competing to keep their season’s alive. Adam Scott, who started at No. 121, and Matt Kuchar, at No. 124, both had strong starts at 66. “I would like to play well this week and get a chance to play next week and keep getting my game into place,” Scott said. Rickie Fowler, who came at 130th and needing a good week, didn’t help himself with a 71. Justin Rose, the Payne Stewart Award winner this week, has to finish in the top 10 to advance after coming in 138th. He opened with a 66, tied for 19th. Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama was at 69, tied for 89th. Olympic medalists Rory Sabbatini and C.T. Pan also are playing after the Tokyo Games. Sabbatini, who took silver for Slovakia behind U.S. gold medal winner Xander Schauffele, started with a 66. Pan, from Chinese Taipei, won a seven-man playoff for the bronze. He shot a 68.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Justin Thomas is playing his third Presidents Cup and is 6-2-2 for his career, so it’s not unusual for rookies to ask him how to handle nerves. In this case, though, the rookie was singer/songwriter/keyboardist Sam Harrop. They were at the VIP party at the Westin hotel on Tuesday night, and Harrop, who had come from London to belt out his International and U.S. Team songs for fans on the first tee, was feeling anxious. Thomas told him that everyone, even the world’s best golfers, felt first-tee jitters, and he would be fine. Harrop was. With a 12:08 p.m. start Thursday – “Sounds like a tee time, doesn’t it?” – golf Twitter’s beloved crooner commenced playing from his perch in the stands, a Presidents Cup first. The crowd quieted down and even laughed, cheered and/or jeered at his lyrics. “It was an adrenaline rush like I’ve never experienced,” said Harrop, whose golf-themed cover songs have earned him nearly 20,000 Twitter followers, including many of the TOUR players he writes songs about. “I’ve never done this!” This Presidents Cup has set new standards with the more than 500,000-square-foot buildout, among other benchmarks, but it has also been the first of its kind in involving Harrop, a married father of two who works for a maker of sheet music in his day job. He flew here Sunday with his manager/former bandmate Jonathan Haselden not knowing what to expect. Haselden, who said they’re like an old married couple, had never even been to a golf tournament. “Sam’s generally always been pretty humble about his talents,” Harrop’s wife, Julia, a child psychologist, said via email from London. “I think he’s been more surprised than anyone by how it’s taken off. He gets really happy when any of the pro golfers reference him or re-tweet one of his songs. “He’s had cool things sent to him, too,” she continued, “like an engraved club and more recently his precious Tony Finau-signed cap!” (Harrop calls himself perhaps Finau’s biggest fan.) Harrop and Haselden used to play in a band called RedBoxBlue. Haselden was the lead singer; Harrop was the keyboardist. “We were the first band in the world to do a gig live on Facebook,” Haselden said. “London, 2008.” Alas, their fate was like that of so many bands: They broke up. For a while, Harrop scratched the creative itch by writing songs about family members, but he was always such a golf nut that it made sense to mash up two of his greatest passions. When his golf parodies began to take off, he enlisted Haselden to be his manager. Their first order of business this week was to sit with members of both teams to make a sort of music video of the U.S. and International Team songs, with the players singing lyrics. Harrop assumed they wouldn’t know him – not true; Finau, the subject of some of his earlier songs, knew who he was – and was pleasantly surprised when they played along. “They all got into it,” Harrop said. “Jordan Spieth, Max Homa, Tony Finau – they got the lines out and they’re not terrible singers. Taylor Pendrith was in a band when he was younger. He wasn’t a singer; he played guitar, so we talked about that. And Tom Kim said he’d rather run around a room naked than sing, but two minutes later, he sang.” Harrop chuckled. As for Thomas, he refused to sing, but played along, otherwise, Harrop said. “J.T. was the most engaging one,” he said. The collaboration resulted in a pair of videos that made the rounds on social media. Then came the VIP party before the man who has been called “golf’s premier parodist” took his moment in the sun shortly after lunch Thursday. Adapting the lyrics of “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News to the specifics of the U.S. Team, and “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire to the makeup of the International Team, Harrop belted out his latest masterpieces. The crowd ate it up, especially the line that the U.S. Team might just win by five. “I told him, ‘You might get booed when you’re singing the other team’s song,’” Haselden said. “And he did, a bit, but in jest. What’s cool is how well received he is – no negativity at all.” Haselden and Harrop were in the hospitality chalet to the right of the first tee with the matches about to begin. Harrop, clutching a cold beer, was trying to come down off his performance high while taking in the scene. “I’m meters away from Jack Nicklaus,” he said, awe-struck. They planned to fly home after the second round Friday. Harrop said he would be taking a bus from Heathrow Airport to his house about an hour outside London. “I’m not big enough for a private car,” he said. Next week he’ll be back to his normal life, taking the kids to school. He doesn’t play as much golf as he used to, but the kids – Georgia, 9 and Theo, 7 – are old enough to go with him to the driving range. Be that as it may, Harrop will likely continue spending more time with keyboard than clubs. After all, the Ryder Cup in Italy is only a year away; now is not the time for rest.
