Koepka looking to secure top spot in Wyndham Rewards

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Brooks Koepka is looking to wrap up the top spot in the Wyndham Rewards a week early with a win at the World Golf Championships – FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Koepka overtook Matt Kuchar as the FedExCup and Wyndham Rewards leader with his tie for fourth at The Open Championship last week, his fourth top-four finish in major championships this season. The current PGA TOUR Player of the Year won the PGA Championship and was runner-up at both the Masters and U.S. Open. He also won THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES this season. As such, he is now on top, but just 37 points ahead of Kuchar, who had led since he was runner up to Kevin Kisner at the World Golf Championships – Dell Technologies Match Play in late March. With 550 points on offer to the winner this week at TPC Southwind, Koepka could theoretically wrap up the top spot with a victory along a poor outing from Kuchar, among others. There are 500 points on offer to the winner of the Wyndham Championship next week, so any lead over that mark after play in Memphis would secure the title and the $2 million Wyndham Rewards Top 10 bonus. Of course, Rory McIlroy (142 behind), Xander Schauffele (507 behind), Gary Woodland (548 behind) and others can still have a significant say in the outcome. “(Winning the FedExCup is) the goal every time you step out and play an event out here on the PGA TOUR. You’re trying to build up FedExCup points, you’re trying to build as big as a lead as possible,â€ Koepka said. “That’s why we play, to make it to Atlanta. I’m sure everybody that tees it up on the PGA TOUR, that’s their goal, to make it to Atlanta and to have a chance to win. “So to be able to put myself in the spot that I have, it’s been an enjoyable ride to say the least and I think (winning the FedExCup) would just cap off a two-year stretch of great golf.â€ Koepka is not yet slated to play the Wyndham Championship, but has until Friday afternoon to commit. He did not rule out signing up, but said his early play in Memphis would dictate that. “If I do what I’m supposed to do this week and win, then everything takes care of itself. But yeah, there’s a lot of scenarios that can happen,â€ he confirmed. “I don’t know the actual breakdown of them, but there is a possibility that next week I could be out there and playing for a lot. So we’ll see where everything kind of falls.â€ Koepka is also in a battle with Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and a few others for a $1 million bonus in the Aon Risk Reward Challenge.

SAN DIEGO — Jon Rahm began with an eagle and kept going lower until he had a 10-under 62 on the North Course at Torrey Pines for a one-shot lead over Justin Rose in the first round Thursday of the Farmers Insurance Open. Tiger Woods made his 2019 debut on the tougher South Course and opened with a 70. The conditions were remarkably close to perfect, with virtually no wind and pure greens on the North Course. Rahm knew it was important to start well, and he hit a 5-wood into 6 feet on the par-5 10th hole. He also made eagle on the 17th and shot 29 on the back. Rose also played on the North. Charles Howell III and Brandon Hagy each had 66 for the low score on the South.

I wanted to stay local, but it was basically a few community colleges. I wanted to go bigger but honestly at that time don’t think I had the talent to go bigger. I had one DI offer and it wasn’t really much. My (swing) coach Chris Harder had played for Mark Leroux at Austin Peay and was coach at Missouri. Chris called him and he (Leroux) gave me a scholarship without ever seeing me hit a single shot. I mean, that was a life changer. He never saw me play golf, didn’t even know really what I looked like and gave me a chance. It’s rare now a days and it changed my life. PGATOUR.COM: You were in the morning wave, so it’s a long wait once you post a score. Are you a scoreboard watcher or do you try to get away? BUCKLEY: “Today I went and had a beautiful lunch at Chic Fil A and hung out there trying to waste some time.  Then I went to a buddy’s house and we talked about my finish. [Hayden made an 8-footer on 17 for bogey and struggled for par on 18.] But after that, I just mentally prepared myself for a 6:30 p.m. playoff.  But trust me there was a lot of scoreboard watching.  Starting in the middle of the day, I refreshed it every couple of minutes for the next few hours. I mean, I looked at it a ton.  And you analyze everything. I saw some guys shot -3 (on the opening nine), but it was on back and knew the front was playing harder. You are just waiting for guys that are close to come in and you just never know what is going to happen.  I’ve been through some of these and learned that. I mean today is good example; last score was Andrew McCain. I mean those guys at 5 under had to be feeling great, then all of a sudden, they have to go right to a playoff. PGATOUR.COM: You shot 66 last year at this Monday but lost in a playoff. Does that give you confidence coming back here or bring up some past frustrations? BUCKLEY: “Mostly confidence for sure, but the guys I played my practice round with asked if I had played here before. I told them yeah last year I shot 66, birdied three of the four playoff holes and was playing a mini-tour event the next day. I showed up this year and I know I’m a lot better (player) then I was last year, and I got into a playoff last year so that gives me a ton of confidence. PGATOUR.COM: Of course, there is pressure at any Monday qualifier but at the end of day this is what you do for living. Compare the feeling here to a Korn Ferry Monday because you are a member there? BUCKLEY: “Like today at a PGA [TOUR] Monday, I really have nothing to lose; there are guys out there who need starts to keep cards and stuff. So not a ton of pressure, though I want to play well. But at the Korn Ferry Mondays, I have felt pressure for sure because I’m a member. I know that if I Monday and make a cut, I’m going to get starts through the season. I was 6 under through 12 at one of those Korn Ferry Mondays and it was early, you know? If I got in, my season would be all set. Now that I have status, I’ve told myself if I can get into an event before Mackenzie starts and if I can get 10 starts on Korn Ferry, I’m not going to Canada.  If I can’t get something done in 10 starts, that’s on me. NOTES NOTABLE MISSES: Adam Svensson 67 (lost in playoff), Sam Saunders 70, Robert Allenby 71, Alex Cejka 72, Jonathan Byrd 73, John Senden 75 STRENGTH OF HONDA CLASSIC MONDAY Q FIELD Combined number of PGA TOUR starts: 5,612 Number of players with at least one PGA TOUR win: 12 Combined number of PGA TOUR wins: 23 Combined PGA TOUR earnings: More than $200 million Combined Korn Ferry Tour wins: 41 Players with most PGA TOUR wins in the field: Jonathan Byrd 5, Robert Allenby 4 (Allenby also has 4 European Tour wins along with 12 Australasian wins) COURSE INFO Banyan Creek Golf and Resort Par: 72 Yardage: 7,089 Rating: 76.1 Slope: 153 2019-2020 SEASON MONDAY QUALIFIER STATS Average Medalist score: 65.1 Average last qualifying spot score: 66.5 Total number of cuts made: 9 of 43 (21%) Most recent results (Puerto Rico Open): Will Gordon T20, Andrew Loupe MC, Carl Yuan MC, Justin Doeden MC Money earned: $311,028 Best finish: Garrett Osborn, T18, Sanderson Farms Championship UPCOMING MONDAY QUALIFIERS March 9: Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, The Preserve at Ironhorse (Note: This Monday qualifier is held two weeks prior to event) March 16: Valspar Championship, Southern Hills Plantation NOTES FROM OTHER TOURS PGA TOUR Champions: Hugh Royer III, who less than two years ago faced 26 hours of surgery for cancer, Monday Qualified for the Colorguard Classic. Sleeper Picks: World Golf Championships-Mexico ChampionshipSleeper Picks: World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship

Lucas Herbert … With a playoff victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic four weeks ago – his maiden title on the European Tour – and three more paydays in 2020, he’s totaled more Official World Golf Ranking points in the calendar year than every other PGA TOUR non-member, in the process climbing 121 spots to 80th. He can hang with anyone in terms of distance off the tee, but like so many Aussies before him, he also has soft hands for scoring. All three of his PGA TOUR appearances to date have been in majors, so the bright lights of a World Golf Championship won’t be unfamiliar. Kurt Kitayama … The native of California and UNLV product took a week off after finishing T18 on the Poa greens at Pebble Beach. That came two weeks after he placed T6 in Dubai. So, he’s simply piled on after a magnificent rookie season on the European Tour during which he logged two wins, a P2, a solo third, a solo fourth and finished 14th in the Race to Dubai. His firepower off the tee doesn’t play everywhere, but he’s learned how to harness it on the big stage. Michael Lorenzo-Vera … He occupied a spot on this page for the last World Golf Championship and delivered a T38 at the HSBC Champions. It was good, not great, but the Frenchman would go on to finish a career-best 19th in the Race to Dubai with a solo third at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship. It’s how he qualified for his debut at this week’s WGC, where his peerless touch around and on greens should yield a better result than his last WGC. His pair of cuts made in 2020 is highlighted by a T8 in Dubai. Still winless on the European Tour, the 35-year-old is embarking on his 198th career start. Marcus Kinhult … The 23-year-old probably couldn’t have hand-picked a better spot for his World Golf Championship debut. As one of the European Tour’s best putters – a Swede with a sharp short game, who knew? – he’s seemingly solidified a spot on the circuit for years to come. Since breaking through at the British Masters last May, he’s added seven top 20s, including a playoff loss (to Tommy Fleetwood) at the Nedbank Golf Challenge three months ago. Ryan Fox … The Kiwi is a regular on the European Tour but he’s in the field as the money leader from the Australasian Tour in 2019. That was boosted in earnest with a victory at the last edition of the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth a year ago this week. After months without making another headline, a dry spell that included a T67 in his debut at Club de Golf Chapultepec the week after his title in Australia, he returns having recorded five top 25s during an 11-for-12 stretch dating back to the last weekend in September. Most encouragingly, he finished second at the ISPS Handa Vic Open before taking last week off. Arguably best known in the U.S. as one of the longest hitters anywhere, the 33-year-old can throttle back at altitude and put his capable irons to work. NOTE: Sleeper is a relative term, so Rob uses unofficial criteria to determine who qualifies. Each of the following usually is determined to be ineligible for this weekly staple: Winners of the tournament on the current host course; winners in the same season; recent major champions; top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking; recent participants of team competitions.
