Justin Thomas keeps one-shot lead at ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — With one good break and two good putts, Justin Thomas felt much better about his round of 5-under 67 on Saturday that gave him a one-shot lead over Jon Rahm in the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD. RELATED: Full leaderboard | Inside the Field: Bermuda Championship Thomas, who trailed by as many as two shots on the back nine, hit driver on the par-5 16th that clanged off a sycamore tree and dropped into the rough instead of he creek. He holed a 10-foot birdie putt to tie for the lead, and then followed with a 30-foot birdie putt up the slope on the par-3 17th. Rahm finished some two hours earlier with a 63, which he figured at least would get him close to the lead and nearly kept him at the top until Thomas finished strong. Lanto Griffin was leading until making two bogeys over the last four holes, one in the water on the par-3 15th, the other by going rough-to-rough on the closing hole. Thomas was at 19-under 197 in another week of low scoring on the PGA TOUR, at least for most players. It was another grind for Tiger Woods, the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP winner last year in Japan, who could only manage a 71. That led to what figures to be the greatest illustration of the strange times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Woods will be playing the final round with Phil Mickelson, the top two attractions in golf, and there won’t be any fans on the course to watch them. Mickelson opened with seven birdies in eight holes, and played the rest of the way in 2 over for a 67. It will be the ninth time they play together in the final round on the PGA TOUR, and the first time they have no bearing on the outcome. They were 16 shots out of the lead. The first time they played together on a Sunday was at the 1997 PGA Championship when they were eight shots behind and each shot 75, The other end of scoring is plenty compelling. Thomas is going for his third victory this year. Griffin is equally intriguing. He won his first PGA TOUR title last year in Houston and showed for so much of Saturday that he doesn’t get caught up in much. Plus, his putting stroke has been pure all week. Griffin opened with four straight birdies to take the lead, and he stayed there until the end of the round. He went to 19 under with a 15-foot birdie on the 14th hole — two clear of Thomas at that point — when his tee shot took on the flag on the right side of the green at the 15th and drifted too far right and into the hazard. Instead of going to the drop zone, he went to a different set of tees that allowed for a full swing and better control, dropped that wedge into 20 feet and made the putt to escape with bogey. Thomas was playing well enough, even if he had little to show for it after opening with two birdies. In trouble off the tee on the par-5 13th, he chose to drop on the cement cart path and hit a hard draw — without damaging his club — back into the fairway. But then he didn’t take advantage by hitting a mediocre wedge to the fringe to set up par. And when Griffin holed his birdie putt on the 14th, Thomas missed badly from just inside him. But it changed quickly with those two birdies on the 16th and 17th, and he was right back where he started the day. Patrick Cantlay didn’t get much out of his round either, but he kept bogeys off his card for the third straight day. He was three shots behind, along with Sebastian Munoz and Ryan Palmer, who each had 66. Webb Simpson (67) and Bubba Watson (68) were among those four shots behind.

Power Rankings: Fantasy golf advice for ISPS Handa Melbourne World Cup of GolfPower Rankings: Fantasy golf advice for ISPS Handa Melbourne World Cup of Golf

As the PGA TOUR settles into its annual hibernation for the holidays, we’re reminded immediately that the sport is global. There may not be a better example of it than this week’s ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf. Two-man teams representing 28 countries from six continents have assembled at The Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia, for the biennial competition. Scroll beneath the ranking for details on the course, the format and more. WILD CARDS Belgium … Former University of Illinois teammates Thomas Pieters and Thomas Detry should have a blast. Detry is as much of a machine as any non-winner on the European Tour. Pieters’ profile as a bomber overshadows his phenomenal putting. China … Hao Tong Li and Ashun Wu surprised en route to sharing runner-up honors at Kingston Heath two years ago, so they’re back to go one better. Li recently connected five straight top-11 finishes. Mexico … Fresh off victory at the Emirates Australian Open, Abraham Ancer is one of the hottest talents in the world right now, but teammate Roberto Díaz is 742nd in the Official World Golf Ranking. As spring blooms Down Under, this international field gets everything it wants at The Metropolitan Golf Club. A cornerstone of the famed Sandbelt, its history and beauty rivals any other test on the planet. Metropolitan may be most familiar to longtime fans of the sport as the host of the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play in 2001, but it’s also served as the backdrop at times for all three of the events comprising the Triple Crown in Australia as well as the 2009 Women’s Australian Open. Presented at 7,308 yards for this week’s 72-hole, stroke-play contest, Metropolitan is a stock par 72, but three each of the par 3s and par 5s are situated on the outward nine. This won’t matter in four-ball in Rounds 1 and 3, but because all four of the par 3s are even-numbered holes – Nos. 2, 6, 8 and 12 – strategy will come into play in Rounds 2 and 4 when foursomes is utilized. (This is the opposite format from when Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen and Søren Kjeldsen rode a 12-under 60 in four-ball in the second round en route to a four-stroke victory at Kingston Heath Golf Club in 2016.) Unlike the majority of tracks outside the United States, Metropolitan’s greens are manicured to run fast. In ideal conditions, Stimpmeter readings exceed 12 feet on the bentgrass putting surfaces. Unfortunately, bad weather is forecast. After daytime temperatures climbed into the 80s through Monday, a cold front will limit reading to no higher than the upper 50s and low 60s throughout the tournament. What’s more, rain is all but guaranteed to fall on Thursday and Friday. And that’s still not all. Winds will howl steadily at approximately 15 mph and gust to 25 mph or more. As it concerns the challenges within the control of the competitors, the longest rough is trimmed to 2 inches, but the primary hazard are the striking bunkers that dominate the landscape. There’s zero margin for error adjacent to most of them as fairways and greens drop helplessly over sharp edges of numerous revamped faces. Of the 56 golfers in all, 33 competed somewhere last weekend, 25 of whom at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. Seven acclimated at the Emirates Australian Open over in Sydney, while Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent descended from the Japan Golf Tour’s Dunlop Phoenix. No doubt the champions of the World Cup entirely will feel like they’ve not only prevailed over the competition, but the elements as well. First place of the $7-million prize fund awards $2.24 million with $1.12 million going to each member of the winning team.

Horses for Courses: Wyndham ChampionshipHorses for Courses: Wyndham Championship

The final of 50 events in the super-sized PGA TOUR season tees it up this week to determine the field of 125 for the FedExCup Playoffs. No more chances for conjecture, swing changes or “saving it for later” as the TOUR’s annual stop at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC, will determine who moves on and who heads home. This Donald Ross original was redone by Kris Spence in 2007 and the event was relocated here in 2008. The Wyndham Championship also moved to the final event on the TOUR calendar after the redesign. The end of the road pressure has been on the calendar since. RELATED: Power Rankings | Expert Picks There’s good news and bad news for the full field of 156. Sedgefield annually plays as one of the easiest courses on TOUR and always competes for the easiest Par-70. The good news is everyone knows what it will take to win this week: low scores/birdies/eagles. The bad news is everyone who needs is on the bubble hasn’t exactly been doing that lately and will need to find it immediately. The formula in a shootout, which seems like every event TOUR event the last month, remains the same. The more fairways and GIR that are found the more chances for birdie putts and no-sweat pars. Rounds in the 60s will trump everything as the math suggests better than 5-under each day is needed to win. Hard to do that with a 70 or worse over the four days. Only five rounds worse than 70 were posted last year in the top 27 players, TOTAL. Champion Bermuda greens sit at 6,000 square feet and pitch, in Ross style, back to front, so leaving the ball below the hole is key. One of the reason scoring is always low is they’re in perfect shape and the course only plays 7,131 yards. Throw in rough at not even three inches and a shootout is on the cards. How low do you have to go? Well, the last five winners posted either 21 or 22-under. Webb Simpson posted 21-under here in 2019 and didn’t win. So did Ollie Schniederjans in 2017. The highest winning score on the podium the last three seasons is 18-under, accomplished twice. The $1.157 winner’s portion (500 FedExCup) of the $6.4 million total purse will go a long way to determining final FedExCup positioning for next week.
