Justin Thomas found his form with ‘a ballstriking clinic’ at the Players

OVERVIEW After a season that left him looking for answers, sleeping giant Jordan Spieth instead got more questions in his first two starts of the 2018-19 campaign. At the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, he opened with a 66 but struggled with a new driver and 3-wood and finished T55. The next week, making his first visit to the Riviera Maya for the Mayakoba Golf Classic, he went back to the driver/3-wood he’d played for the last five years. And he felt encouraged — in the practice rounds. Alas, when it counted, he hit just six fairways in each of the first two rounds, shot 71-69, and missed the cut. Spieth’s dizzying freefall on the greens, where he languished at 136th in Strokes Gained: Putting last season, remains a concern. By comparison, in 2015, when he won the FedExCup, he was 9th in that stat, followed by 2nd and 39th in 2016 and ’17, respectively. Largely as a result of his putting woes, Spieth went winless 2017-18, finished 31st in the FedExCup and, surprising many, including himself, missed the TOUR Championship. Granted, he’s had a lot on his mind. In addition to his equipment travails — Spieth said he would do more testing — he was also wedding-planning (longtime girlfriend Annie Verret), which included giving the boot to his housemates in Dallas, including TOUR rookie Kramer Hickok, a former teammate at Texas. Jordan and Annie were married over the Thanksgiving holidays. The home life is solid. As for golf? TOUR INSIDER: Spieth, always precocious, at times looks like he’s having a mid-life crisis at age 25. After toiling on the range at THE NORTHERN TRUST last summer, he said he was working on the wrong thing and had been wasting his time. To his credit, he knows his woes aren’t limited to the greens. Last season he was 54th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, not bad but a far cry from 2015 (15th in that category). He was 26th in SG: Approach-the-Green after ranking 1st in that category in 2017. The stage is set for a comeback. — By Cameron Morfit FANTASY INSIDER: Maybe only once over the years have I referenced the jazz classic, “I Can’t Get Started,” but I think of it every time a headliner misfires time and again as he did throughout the 2017-18 season. The song was written and composed eight decades ago, but its message is as timeless as it is specific. The ballad settles on the incompleteness of a man who succeeds in everything but love, but it’s not so much a tale of falling short as it is of confusion. The irony, at least in the context of my placement, is that one of the lyrics acknowledges good scores on the golf course. Spieth still doesn’t have any trouble beating par, but he’s endured a falling-out with his putter. Perhaps now as a married man he’ll rekindle his other love starting soon. As much as gamers want to believe that he’ll regain a consistently healthy relationship with it, we really have no choice, particularly salary leaguers who are treated to bottom-dollar sticker price of $2.793 million. — By Rob Bolton EQUIPMENT INSIDER: After using a Titleist 915D2 driver (9.5 degrees) for years, Spieth has finally switched into a new TS2 driver (10.5 degrees), and a new TS2 3 wood. His Titleist Tour Rep says Spieth switched due to higher ball speeds and a higher launch. Both of his new metalwoods are equipped with Graphite Design Tour AD-IZ shafts. What’s less likely for Spieth to change out is his rusted Scotty Cameron 009 putter that he putts with cross-handed (and sometimes not even looking at the ball). Spieth briefly switched to a mallet-style Scotty Cameron in 2017, but he’s currently still gaming the rusted, blade-style Scotty. His pants are now slimmer, more tapered, and are hemmed at the tops of his shoes for a streamlined look. He even worked in a few black-on-black outfits, but he never seemed to find a comfort zone with them. SILVIS, Ill. — A lot happened while Morgan Hoffmann spent more than two years in the Costa Rican jungle, in search of his own holistic cure to the rare form of muscular dystrophy that threatened to end a once-promising career in professional golf. News of significant changes to the Rules of Golf didn’t reach him. Now back in the game, feeling good and eager to use his platform to share news of a new way back to health, Hoffmann is familiar with most of the major changes handed down by the United States Golf Association in 2019. Putting with the flagstick in the hole? Sensible enough. Legally grounding a club in a hazard? “Interesting,” he said with some skepticism. Taking a drop from knee-high? “Weird,” Hoffmann said. Until Thursday morning, however, Hoffmann was unaware that accidentally deflecting your own ball in the course of a shot no longer constitutes a one-shot penalty, per Rule 11.1. So when his hack at a ball plugged in a green side bunker at TPC Deere Run’s par-3 16th struck the lip, flew upward, then backward and bounced off the brim of his cap back into the sand, Hoffman assumed he was hitting 4 on his next shot. After nearly holing his next attempt, he was understandably happy to discover he’d tapped in to save bogey. “It makes sense that it’s not a penalty; I was happy it wasn’t,” he said after being so informed by playing partners Cameron Champ and Cam Davis. “It was an absurd lie and I was happy to get away with bogey.” Hoffman is playing in the John Deere Classic after receiving a sponsor’s exemption just two days earlier, when three-time Deere winner Steve Stricker withdrew. Replacing one of the Deere’s perennial favorites meant that Hoffmann also earned a spot in one of the featured groups on ESPN+, so every one of his shots was streamed on PGA TOUR LIVE. Hoffmann posted a 1-over opening round on Thursday and will have to rally Friday afternoon to make the cut. But he’s done that here before. In 2013, Hoffmann played his first 19 holes of the tournament in 4 over. “I played the next 17 holes in something crazy to make the cut,” he remembered. Hoffmann tied for 17th that year and shared third three years later. “Good memories to rally on this course,” he said. With a medical extension having expired at last week’s Travelers Championship and no additional PGA TOUR starts currently scheduled, Hoffmann will need a serious rally to find his way back to full TOUR status sometime soon. At worst, he’s exempt into the second stage of Q-School for having made a combined 100 cuts on the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour. Yet, having seemingly conquered his health challenge in unorthodox fashion in the wilds of Costa Rica, Hoffmann is content to take each day as it comes. “My perspective on life has changed so much,” he said. “lt’s just beautiful to be back out here.”

BLAINE, MN – 3M Open tournament officials and the PGA TOUR announced today the creation of a televised, Wednesday, nine-hole charity exhibition at TPC Twin Cities from 2-4 p.m. CT. Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Wolff and Will Gordon will join forces in a nine-hole scramble format on the closing nine holes. In the spirit of community in the Twin Cities, which has had the dual challenges of a global pandemic and social unrest, the players will work together to score birdies and eagles for charity dollars that will support organizations committed to fighting social injustices in the Twin Cities. Some of these organizations will include Lake Street Council, Urban Ventures and YWCAs of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Birdies will be worth $50,000, eagles $100,000 and a hole-in-one $150,000. In addition, there will be five, on-course team Compass Bucks Challenges valued at $50,000 each. These challenges will include trivia questions and a skill challenge. The maximum contribution from the 3M Open Fund will be $825,000. Joining the PGA TOUR players will be American Actor Josh Duhamel and Minnesota Viking great Kyle Rudolph, who will walk with the players for conversation and commentary. The 3M Open Compass Challenge will be broadcast live on PGA TOUR LIVE and simulcast on Golf Channel, GolfTV and PGA TOUR social channels. The 3M Open has identified eight major charity partners for this year’s tournament: M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, Greater Twin Cities United Way, VEAP, Urban Ventures, Lake Street Council, YWCA of Minneapolis, YWCA of St. Paul and the Science Museum of Minnesota.
