Jason Day takes 36-hole lead at Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, Conn. — We pause now to fondly remember Bubba Watson’s neon pink driver, which broke apart mid-swing on the second tee in the Travelers Championship on Friday. RELATED: Leaderboard | Win probabilities: Travelers Championship | No lead safe at Travelers Championship And, if the three-time Travelers winner is going to have luck like this over the weekend, please spare a thought for the rest of the field at the TPC River Highlands, too. Watson recovered after snapping his driver to make birdie at No. 2 on his way to a second straight 66 that left him at 8 under, one stroke behind 36-hole leader Jason Day. “It was a perfect tee shot right down the middle. Chipped it in there and made the putt for birdie,” Watson said wryly. “Ho-hum.” Day shot 62 for the day’s low score and a chance at his first top three finish in more than three years. The former world No. 1 missed three straight cuts before he tied for 44th at the PGA Championship, then withdrew from the Memorial with a back injury and did not qualify for the U.S. Open. Day seemed to fidget with his back on the course Friday, but still had eight birdies in a bogey-free round. “Sometimes when you do have sort of an injury or stiffness, even if you’re sick, sometimes you can come out and play some good golf,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to not really get in my own way today.” First-round co-leader Kramer Hickok was at 10 under before flying the green on the par-3 16th hole and then three-putting from 18 feet for a double bogey; he finished with a 69 to tie Watson for second. Justin Rose and Kevin Kisner each shot 63 and were among seven player tied for fourth at minus-7. Satoshi Kodaira, who was 7 under after the first round, shot a 2-over 72 in the second. A total of 79 players made the cut at minus-2 on the 6,841-yard, par-70 course outside of Hartford. Just squeaking in on the number: defending champion Dustin Johnson and two-time winner Phil Mickelson. Watson, who won the tournament in 2010, ’15 and ’18, started at No. 10 on Friday morning and was 1 under for the day when he arrived at the par-4, 350-yard second hole. That’s when his driver fell apart — but he didn’t. After making contact with the ball, Watson’s clubhead came hurtling off the shaft, landing short of the gallery to the right and leaving him with a broken shaft in his hands. “Luckily … it didn’t reach the crowd so nobody got hurt,” he said. “Nobody in my group knew were the ball was. Once you hit, you’re focused on where the driver head goes.” Despite a fairly pronounced fade, the ball landed in the fairway, about 50 yards from the pin. Watson pitched to 11 feet and holed the putt. Watson said it might have been the travel, going from hot to cold, or overuse that caused the club to break right above the hosel where the shaft connects to the head. His caddie, Ted Scott, tried to pry out the remnant of the shaft so the head could be reused; Watson had a spare driver in his car trunk in case of just such an emergency. Rule 4.1 allows Watson to replace the club. After hitting a 3-wood on the 437-yard, par-4 third, he had his backup in time for the 479-yard, par-4 fourth. “It’s one of those things that happened before and I always have a backup. They brought me the backup two holes later and I played with that the rest of the day,” he said. “I knew there was only a couple drivers left, so really wasn’t too big a deal.” Watson added birdies on the fifth and sixth holes before holing a 50-foot birdie putt on No. 7 to take the lead at 9 under. He gave that shot back with a missed 3-footer on the final hole. “I was trying to get some extra ones if I could,” he said. “Just one of those things that went the wrong way.” Bryson DeChambeau shot 66 on Friday and was at minus-5, one shot better than Brooks Koepka, who had a 67 in the second round. Koepka’s brother, Chase, who qualified for the tournament last year but withdrew because of COVID-19 protocols, shot 73 and missed the cut at 3 over.

Rickie Fowler to showcase new swing in final group at The American ExpressRickie Fowler to showcase new swing in final group at The American Express

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Rickie Fowler rebounded from early struggles in the third round of The American Express and earned the opportunity to put his new swing to the test in Sunday’s final group. Fowler is in third place, four shots behind co-leaders Scottie Scheffler and Andrew Landry after shooting 70 at PGA West’s Stadium Course. Fowler was 2 over after eight holes Saturday, but birdied the par-4 ninth before shooting a bogey-free 33 on the back nine. “We did a good job clawing our way back and making sure we still have a chance going into tomorrow, said Fowler, who shared the 36-hole lead with Scheffler. Fowler recently switched swing coaches. He started working with John Tillery in late September. Tillery also works with TOUR winners Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown. “I like his philosophy about the swing, not necessarily trying to put it in positions but using the body properly. With the body working correctly, there’s really only one place for the arms and the club to go, Fowler said. This is just Fowler’s second start of the season. He got married in the fall, then contracted a bacterial infection before playing in the Presidents Cup. Fowler started the season with a T5 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. His work with Tillery has improved the way his lower-body moves in the downswing and made his swing less reliant on timing, Fowler said. He said his swing will look steeper to the naked eye. “The main thing is really the lower body just working. And for me, I feel like it would stall out a bit, more so kind of halfway through the down swing and for my arms to then catch up, Fowler said. “I used to yank a little bit with my arms from the top of the swing, I get a little steep.

Todd, Simpson take friendship to RSM’s final groupTodd, Simpson take friendship to RSM’s final group

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Their duels date back to the Donald Ross Junior during their teen-aged years in North Carolina. On Sunday, Brendon Todd and Webb Simpson will face each other for a PGA TOUR title. They’ll play in The RSM Classic’s final group alongside Sebastian Munoz. Todd, seeking his third consecutive victory, continued his incredible comeback with a 62 on Saturday at Sea Island’s Seaside Course. Simpson shot 63. He trails Todd by two shots, as does Munoz. They first met when Todd moved to North Carolina in middle school and immediately started challenging Simpson’s dominance in the state. “I was kind of winning golf tournaments and then he moves to Cary, North Carolina, and he starts beating me like a drum,â€ Simpson said. “He was really good and I think we kind of inspired each other growing up. I’m only a couple months younger, but a grade behind him, so he definitely pushed me and hopefully I pushed him.â€ RELATED: Leaderboard | Plantation Course’s new look for The RSM Classic They also supported each other during the tough times, talking on the phone when they were struggling with their games. Simpson endured a winless streak of nearly five years after he was forced to switch putters. Todd’s slump was much deeper. He got the full-swing yips and had a tough time just breaking par. “We both just try to encourage each other and try to be open about what we’re feeling and how we solve it and I think we both have kind of helped each other in that way,â€ Todd said. Saturday’s 62 was Todd’s 12th consecutive round of 68 or better. Four of those rounds have been 63 or lower. Impressive for someone who once went 828 days without breaking 70 in a stroke-play event on either the Korn Ferry Tour or PGA TOUR. “That just proves what kind of guts he has inside of him to not give up or throw in the towel,â€ Simpson said. Todd is trying to become the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win three consecutive events. Simpson is the highest-ranked player in the field, though, and has done everything but win at Sea Island. Munoz won the Sanderson Farms Championship two months ago and ranks fifth in the FedExCup. Todd admitted Saturday that it will be difficult to not think about what’s at stake Sunday, but handling the stress of the past few years has prepared him to handle final-round nerves. “I’ve had to be so disciplined over the last year mentally about just focusing in on ever shot, that I’m aiming to kind of use that experience to my advantage now,â€ Todd said. Todd leads the field in driving accuracy, missing just one fairway through three rounds. On Saturday, he hit every fairway and missed just one green. He started the day four off the lead, but birdied four of his first five holes and made the turn in 6-under 29. He’s gone 35 consecutive holes without a bogey on the Seaside Course. He also gained 3.4 strokes on the green Saturday, holing four putts from outside 15 feet. It could have been even lower, but multiple putts lipped out. “it was like a video game out there today,â€ Todd said. “Just thrilled with the way I’m hitting it and feeling out there. I fought unbelievably well today.â€ Putting has always been his strength, but a few recent changes have increased his confidence on the greens. He switched to a Sik putter last month. At the Houston Open, he added a long red line to his ball to aid with his alignment. A final-round 66 there kicked off the current run. Simpson also hit 17 greens Saturday. He didn’t hole a putt outside 10 feet until making a 27-footer for birdie on the final hole. That moved him a stroke closer to his childhood friend who sits atop the leaderboard. Todd called Simpson “the best friend anybody could ask for.â€ They’ll be trying to beat each other Sunday, though.
