James Driscoll’s sun-protection apparel at the Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, Conn. – Monday qualifier James Driscoll is not taking any chances this week – specifically in protecting himself against the sun. The 40-year-old Boston native, making his first PGA TOUR start in 2-1/1 years, is not only wearing a long-sleeve shirt under his golf polo, he also wears a scarf that wraps around his face and covers his neck, along with a Byron Nelson-style Panama hat. It’s a different look from everybody else in the Travelers Championship field – especially this week as temperatures threatened to break 80 degrees on Friday — but nobody can argue about its effectiveness against the sun’s damaging rays. “Every dermatologist would recommend staying out of the sun as much as possible,â€ said Driscoll, who turned pro in 2001 and is making his 241st start on TOUR. “I just know everyone should protect themselves from the sun as much as possible.â€ To that end, Driscoll – who’s best TOUR finishes are two playoff losses in 2005 and 2009 — is working on launching his own golf clothing line that will specialize in long-sleeve apparel emphasizing sun protection. He expects to receive his first samples soon and would like to launch his line within the next year. “The last thing golf needs is another clothing company,â€ said Driscoll, who currently lives in Jupiter, Florida, and was a full-time Web.com Tour member last season. “But this is a long-sleeved golf shirt for the sun. … “I think the future is that people are going to be wearing a lot more coverage.â€ Asked what he thought of the long-sleeve button-down shirts that Phil Mickelson wore at THE PLAYERS Championship in May, Driscoll replied: “I like that it’s long sleeves and protects you from the sun. But it’s a little too formal for me. Mine’s a little bit more casual.â€ As for this week, Driscoll opened with a 4-under 66 and followed that Friday with a 2-over 72 that leaves him at 2 under, which had him sitting on the cut line when he signed his scorecard. Provided he makes the cut, he can credit a hole-out from the greenside bunker for birdie at the par-3 eighth, which was his next-to-last hole for the day. And as for what kind of reaction his apparel has received from the gallery, Driscoll – who began wearing a Mohawk a couple of years ago – just shrugged. “People think I’m a little weird anyway,â€ he said, “so I don’t think people are too surprised.â€

Adam Hadwin, Ryan Armour shoot 65s to share 3M Open leadAdam Hadwin, Ryan Armour shoot 65s to share 3M Open lead

BLAINE, Minn. — Adam Hadwin missed the weekend cuts in his last three tournaments, continuing a disappointing stretch as he dropped to 120th in the FedExCup standings. RELATED: Leaderboard | TPC Twin Cities’ par-5 finishing hole anything but a snoozer The 33-year-old Canadian has put himself in position to get back in contention for the playoffs with a strong run at the 3M Open. Hadwin shot a 6-under 65 on Friday for a share of the lead with Ryan Armour at 10-under 132. Armour shot 65. “I drove it really well today,” Hadwin said. “Wasn’t in any trouble, hit a lot of good quality iron shots. Again, fat sides of the hole, I gave myself opportunities. My speed control’s been really good. It’s been as stress-free a 65 as you’re going to have.” Hadwin and Armour were two of few players in the afternoon to go low as wind started to play a role following a hot and humid morning with heat indexes reaching 100 degrees. Bo Hoag (66), Chez Reavie (67), Jhonatton Vegas (69) and Roger Sloan (69) were a shot back. All four played in the morning. Dustin Johnson bogeyed the 18th hole after putting his tee shot in the water and missed the cut. He shot 72 to finish at even par. The cut was 2-under. Staying in contention this weekend would be a boon to Hadwin and Armour. Hadwin, who finished fourth in the inaugural 3M Open in 2019, was just inside the cut for the FedExCup Playoffs. The top 125 in the standings make the Playoffs. Armour started the tournament 135th. “I think the biggest thing coming in this week, I’ve just been a little bit more committed to the process and less on the outcome,” Hadwin said. “Certainly Playoffs, maintaining status, all that stuff has probably been creeping in a bit in the last little bit and I probably got away from some of the little details that make this game happen for us. So, I’ve gotten back to that these last three rounds and it’s worked out a lot better for me.” Hadwin, famous for shooting a 59 at the CareerBuilder Challenge in 2017, had a 69 on the final day of the Open Championship and followed with a 67 on Thursday in Minnesota. His only PGA TOUR win was the Valspar Championship in 2017. Armour’s lone victory came in the 2018 Sanderson Farms Championship. He’s coming off a fifth-place finish at last week’s Barbasol Championship. He birdied five of his final eight holes Friday. “I’m trying,” Armour said. “We’ll worry about the points later. I don’t feel like I’ve really had as bad a year as 135 sounds. I missed five or six cuts by a shot, so you’re always kind of around that cut line and I just fell on the wrong side of it a few times. That’s what kind of gnaws at you because you feel like, man, it’s not that bad, so maybe I should be higher, but you’ve got to go out and get it done and we’re just trying our hardest right now.” Eleven players finished their first rounds Friday after a weather delay Thursday left them unable to finish. With more inclement weather forecast overnight, the 3M Open will go with threesomes off split tees Saturday. Vegas was able to finish in the dark on Thursday, but it wasn’t without incident as his approach on the 18th hit the top of a hospitality tent. The ball was found and he was given relief and finished with a birdie and a tie for the lead. One of four players at the 3M Open slated to play in next week’s Olympics, Vegas kept his strong recent form going Friday. The Venezuelan was among the leaders before a bogey finish on the ninth hole, which is playing as the toughest on the course. Vegas has tied for 11th or better in three of his last five tournaments. “I feel I like I’m keeping the ball in play pretty well, giving myself enough chances, making a few putts, which is always good,” Vegas said. “The wind is blowing and it’s kind of that intensity that is a little bit annoying, especially some of those shots with so much water around this place, but played solid. I can’t really complain too much.”

Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy struggle at Honda ClassicRickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy struggle at Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Rickie Fowler’s swing is off-kilter, and so his title defense at The Honda Classic is over. One bad hole almost led Rory McIlroy to have a free weekend, as well. Fowler bogeyed six of his first nine holes Friday en route to a 76. He has two missed cuts and a lost 54-hole lead in three starts since his victory at the Hero World Challenge, where he shot a final-round 61. “I haven’t been swinging it great … the past month, month-and-a-half,” Fowler said after his round. “It’s close. A little bit off and the wind is going to make it look like you’re a terrible weekend golfer.” McIlroy made a triple-bogey on the par-3 17th, his eighth hole Friday, but a second consecutive 72 should allow him to squeeze inside the cut line. McIlroy won the 2012 Honda Classic and lost a playoff to Russell Henley in 2014, but he has struggled since. This was his seventh consecutive over-par round at PGA National.  They weren’t the only ones to have a tough time. PGA National’s Champion Course is playing especially tough this year because of strong south Florida winds and some agronomical struggles on the greens that have led to slick putting surfaces.  Thursday’s average score was more than 2.6 strokes over par and Friday wasn’t any easier. “It seemed like every hole that we had a right-to-left wind, the pin was on the right and vice versa, so it was hard to get it close,” McIlroy said. He was even par over his final 10 holes to give himself two more rounds at PGA National. When asked what he would play for over the weekend, he replied, “World-ranking points, FedExCup points and some cash, hopefully. That’s about it.” He’ll play the weekend in his adopted hometown for the first time since 2014, but another victory seems all but out of reach.
