SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Ryan Alford of Shreveport, Louisiana, shot a 6-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over Marcus Byrd of Nashville, Tennessee, in the first round of APGA Tour Scottsdale on the TPC Champions Course Monday. Alford delivered five birdies and an eagle with a 30-footer on the ninth hole to fashion the best score of the day in perfect conditions at the PGA TOUR-owned, 7,115-yard par 71 layout. Byrd shot a 32 on the back nine that included an eagle on the dogleg par 4 15th hole. He drove the green with a 2-iron that traveled an estimated 290 yards and dropped a 35-footer for the unusual 2 but then made bogey on No. 18 to drop out of a tie for the lead. “I hit everything well and putted the way I wanted to,” said Alford, who played college golf at Louisiana Tech and was a teammate of PGA TOUR player Sam Burns at Calvary Baptist High School in Shreveport. “Hopefully, I’ll be ready and tomorrow will be another day at the office” It will be a crowded leaderboard for the final 18 holes Tuesday. Nyasha Mauchaza of Port St. Lucie, Florida, is another stroke back at 4 under, Tommy Schaff of Ridgeland, South Carolina, and Trey Valentine of Melbourne, Florida are both at 3 under and a group of four players at 2 under is led by APGA Tour 2020 Lexus Cup Player of the Year Tim O’Neal of Savannah, Georgia. APGA Tour Scottsdale is the sixth tournament of the year for the 13-event circuit whose mission is to bring greater diversity to the sport of golf. The players are competing for a $25,000 purse with all activities conducted under social-distancing and health/safety guidelines in conjunction with regional authorities. APGA Tour standout Willie Mack shot 1-under 70 as he prepares for his sponsor exemption opportunity into the Korn Ferry Tour’s Huntsville Championship April 29-May 2 in Huntsville, Alabama. The field also includes Kamaiu Johnson, who shot an even-par 71, after winning APGA Tour Las Vegas last week at the TPC course there. Kirk Triplett, the longtime PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions professional, spoke to the players after the round and provided words of encouragement centered on understanding the challenge that lies ahead in trying to make the top levels of professional golf. “Finding consistency is the key. What you’re doing is like competing in a marathon,” offered the Scottsdale resident who displayed a BLACK LIVES MATTER sticker on his golf bag at the Senior PLAYERS Championship in Akron, Ohio, last year. Triplett has two adopted children who are minorities and told the media that he wanted to start a conversation. The APGA Tour 2021 season reaches its midpoint May 23-25 when APGA Tour Louisville is contested at famed Valhalla Country Club, which is owned and operated by PGA of America.

Four-man playoff anyone? With only 20 of the 64 players officially without any hope of advancing, plenty of excitement awaits. Despite being around match play for decades the pair have never gone head to head before. Both took down fellow major winners Jason Day and Phil Mickelson to get here. Justin Rose (2) vs. Gary Woodland (22) – Woodland actually has the upper hand in this match given a tie would send him through, but it can only be one of these two make the weekend. FedExCup champion Rose fought back late to earn a half on Thursday allowing him the knowledge a win against Woodland will be enough to advance. FOUR-MAN PLAYOFF? Xander Schauffele (9) vs. Rafa Cabrera Bello (29) – Should Cabrera Bello beat Schauffele in this match, he might force his way into a playoff with the former Rookie of the Year. That playoff in Group 9 could contain four men if Lee Westwood finds a way to beat countryman Tyrrell Hatton (see below). Schauffele is guaranteed at worst a playoff if he wins. Tyrrell Hatton (35) vs. Lee Westwood (62) – Like above, Westwood can give himself a chance at a playoff if he can beat Hatton. Hatton can secure himself at least a playoff if he wins. If Westwood prevails and Cabrera Bello does likewise in the above match, all four will go to sudden death! A tie could be enough to force a four-man showdown in Group 14, but only if the above-mentioned match also ends in a tie. Kevin Kisner (48) vs. Keith Mitchell (56) – See above. Just switch the names. MUST WIN FOR TIGER Tiger Woods (13) vs. Patrick Cantlay (18) – After a loss to Brandt Snedeker, three-time champion Woods faces an uphill battle to advance to the weekend knockout phase. First, Woods must beat Cantlay and then hope winless Aaron Wise can find a way to either beat or tie Snedeker in their match. If Wise and Woods win, Woods advances. PRIDE ONLY Jason Day (12) vs. Phil Mickelson (20) – As the top two seeds in Group 12, you would have figured this match would have been more consequential to the tournament. GREENSBORO, N.C. — Ryan Armour shot a career-best 9-under 61 on Friday for a share of the lead with Webb Simpson after two rounds at the Wyndham Championship. Armour and Simpson were at 13-under 127 halfway through the PGA TOUR’s final event of the regular season. Simpson shot a 64. Henrik Stenson was a stroke behind them after a 66. Ollie Schniederjans and Vaughn Taylor and were 11. Schniederjans shot 63, Taylor had a 66. First-round leader Matt Every followed his 61 with a 72 to slip six strokes off the lead. The field at Sedgefield Country Club is once again full of players trying to force their way off the bubble and qualify for the postseason. The top 125 players on the points list earn berths at THE NORTHERN TRUST next week in New York. At No. 187 on the list, Armour isn’t even close to the bubble. “Could turn your life around,” Armour said. “I had some goals at the beginning of the week. I knew where I stood and, you know, right now the goals are attainable.” The 41-year-old who has yet to win on tour and has bounced between the big tour and the Web.com Tour throughout his 14-year professional career, had nine birdies — five on his first nine holes, then four in a row on Nos. 5-8 — to quickly climb the leaderboard. His round was two strokes better than his previous best of 63 nine years ago in Milwaukee. Simpson, a North Carolina native who won here in 2011 and named his third child Wyndham, put himself in position to contend for his first victory since 2014. He had four birdies on the first six holes of his back nine, pulling even with Armour at 13 under after his birdie on the par-5 15th. “Keep making birdies, stay aggressive and know that there’s plenty of good golfers behind me,” Simpson said. “I got to keep the hammer down.” Stenson, who started on the back nine, offset his lone bogey of the round — he missed a 15-foot par putt on the par-4 18th — with three birdies during the four-hole span between Nos. 4-7. “The game plan is there,” he said. “I got the set-up in the bag to give me those numbers off the tee that we need and it’s just about going out there and playing, continue making birdies and giving myself birdie chances. It’s a low scoring golf course … keep it going.” Among bubble players, No. 125 Geoff Ogilvy played his way to the weekend late in his round. He had birdies on five of his final six holes to move to 4 under for the tournament — good enough to help him beat the cut line of 3 under. And No. 141 Johnson Wagner had the shot of the tournament so far, with an albatross on the par-5 fifth, using a 5-iron to hole out his 215-yard second shot from the right fairway. It was the first albatross at the tournament since Fabian Gomez had one on No. 15 in 2011. “I had a bunch of family that’s up by the green and they started going bananas,” Wagner said. “Pretty clear it had gone in.” Wagner shot a 64 to move to 9 under. Some others weren’t so fortunate: No. 129 Daniel Summerhays was at even par while No. 126 Cameron Tringale was 1 under.
