How 20 yards helped Francesco Molinari have a career year in 2018

Have hope. It’s never too late to gain distance. Francesco Molinari proved that in his career-changing 2018 campaign. A drastic increase in driving distance helped the 35-year-old Italian have a dream season. He became the first player to win a major and go 5-0 in the Ryder Cup in the same year. He won his first PGA TOUR title and qualified for his first TOUR Championship, as well. Putting instructor Phil Kenyon and performance coach Dave Alred have received a lot of credit for Molinari’s success, and rightfully so. His 20-yard gain since 2015 — including a 10-yard increase since 2017 — was an underreported aspect of his rapid ascension into to the game’s elite ranks, though. Molinari is proof that the incremental impact of longer tee shots — though more difficult to observe than the effect of improved putting — adds up over the course of a tournament and a season. For many years, Molinari was known for his laser-straight tee shots. They helped him have a strong career. He was a two-time Ryder Cup participant and owned four victories on the European Tour, including the 2010 World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, before this season. This week, Sheshan International is the site of Molinari’s 2018-19 debut. He arrives in Shanghai after nearly doubling his career victory total in a single season. He won The Open Championship and Quicken Loans National, as well as the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. He reached career-highs in the FedExCup (17th) and world ranking (5th). He went undefeated at Le Golf National after going winless in his first two Ryder Cups. Molinari and his longtime swing coach, Denis Pugh, started the search for extra yards several years ago. There were some obvious ways for Molinari to hit it farther, but such a change doesn’t come without risk. Several players have lost their way in the quest for extra yardage. Molinari changed his swing, his equipment and strategy. “My swing was very compact and very simple so it was probably easier for me than some other guys to find ways to get more swing speed and ball speed,â€ Molinari said. “It’s a very delicate work.â€ He also hit the gym. “I was more of a couch guy a few years ago,â€ he said. Augusta National’s eighth hole, an uphill par-5 with a large bunker looming on the right side of the fairway, provides a perfect illustration of Molinari’s transformation Long hitters can carry the hazard to reach the green in two. Molinari had to aim away from the bunker, then lay up. “This year, a couple days it was warm and a little down-breeze. I carried the bunker and I was able to hit 5-wood or 4-iron into the green,â€ he said. His T20 finish was one off his career-best at the Masters. He finished this season ranked seventh in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (+0.72) and 52nd in driving distance (301.0 yards). Three years ago, he was 153rd in driving distance with an average measured drive of 281.6 yards. “It’s very important for mainly two reasons. One, it’s easier to play the golf course. … I can carry a few more bunkers every round on different courses. That means having a few more wedges into the greens and it has a ripple effect on the game,â€ Molinari said. “Confidence-wise, it’s simply good to see when you’re out there that you’re driving it past some guys and you’re not 50 behind some guys, you’re maybe only 20 yards behind.â€ Mark Broadie, the inventor of the Strokes Gained statistics, quantified the benefits of increased distance in his book “Every Shot Counts.â€ An extra 20 yards off the tee can be worth up to three strokes per tournament, he said. It’s the sum of small gains. The average PGA TOUR player takes 2.98 strokes to hole out from 160 yards. It’s 2.91 from 140 yards. That’s less than one-tenth of a stroke, but it can become significant over the course of 72 holes. The increased distance outweighs the increase in missed fairways, as well. Molinari also is hitting his irons farther, and with increased spin and a higher trajectory. Broadie keeps statistics for Molinari, as well as his brother, Edoardo, who won the 2009 World Cup with Francesco and teamed with him at the 2010 Ryder Cup. Edoardo was one of the first pros to apply Broadie’s Strokes Gained statistics to his own game. Francesco is gaining 1.9 more strokes per tournament with his tee shots than he was in 2015 (when adjusted for courses and field strength). “I was very impressed at the magnitude of his distance gain this year, especially after the large gain from 2015 to 2016,â€ Broadie said. Molinari did it with relatively little loss in accuracy. He still hits a relatively high number of fairways for a player of his length. That’s how he ranked eighth in total driving – the sum of a player’s ranking in driving distance and accuracy — last season. And his misses still aren’t far from the fairway. That allows him to be more aggressive with his club selection off the tee. Molinari said he’s started hitting driver more often to further capitalize on his length. His tee shots covered 64 percent of the yardage on par-4s and par-5s this season. That’s nearly 5 percent more than three seasons ago. He ranked 27th in that statistic in 2018 after ranking 168th (out of 184 players) in 2015. His compact swing offered room for improvement, as well. He now makes a bigger turn on the backswing to create more speed. He tries to feel his sternum turning as far and as high from the ball as possible. He lifts his left heel off the ground to increase his turn. TaylorMade’s Adrian Rietveld saw Molinari’s transformation first-hand. During one of their first testing sessions, in October 2016, Molinari’s clubhead speed averaged 107.1 mph and his ball speed was 158.5 mph. In February 2018, his clubhead speed was over 112 mph and ball speed was nearly 166 mph.  “He constantly spoke about how hard he was working with Denis Pugh on his swing and in the gym with his team,â€ Rietveld said. “Some days he would be just too (tired) from the strength work to produce long equipment sessions.â€ In May 2018, he was up to 114 and 169 mph. He was now carrying the ball nearly 290 yards, more than 25 yards longer than that October 2016 testing session. “Apart from my work with Justin Rose, I have never worked with a player as precise as Francesco,â€ Rietveld said. He watched Rose undergo a similar distance gain that helped him win the 2013 U.S. Open, then win the FedExCup and become No. 1 in the world ranking. In today’s game, players who gain speed can also gain trophies. Molinari has three from this season as proof.

Numbers to Know: Wyndham ChampionshipNumbers to Know: Wyndham Championship

Welcome to this week's edition of Numbers to Know, where we will take a closer at Jim Herman's victory at the Wyndham Championship. It was Herman's third PGA TOUR victory, moving him closer to pitcher Sandy Koufax on the list of all-time great athletic alumni from the University of Cincinnati. Let's get started. 1. FAST AND FURIOUS: Herman shot 61-63 on the weekend, tying the PGA TOUR record for lowest final 36 holes by a winner. Stuart Appleby also shot 65-59 in the final two rounds of his victory at the 2010 The Greenbrier Classic. Herman had the lowest weekend score at the Wyndham by two shots. Zach Johnson, who shot 126 in the final two rounds, was the only player within three shots of Herman over the final two rounds at Sedgefield. Herman missed just two fairways and four greens over the final two rounds. He led the field in greens hit (63 of 72) and was fourth in driving accuracy (46 of 56). 2. EAGLE HAS LANDED: Herman led the field with three eagles last week. That included a 131-yard hole-out on the par-4 ninth Thursday and two putts made on the par-5 fifth hole: a 25-footer in the second round and a 59-footer Sunday. Herman has two of the four longest holed shots for eagle by a winner this season, including the longest holed shot for eagle by a winner on a par-4 and par-5 this season. 3. MAKING THE MOST OF IT: Herman has two top-25 finishes in the past two seasons. They're both victories. Talk about making the most of your opportunities. He has missed two-thirds of his cuts over that span, including 11 of 18 this season entering the Wyndham Championship. In the past 10 years, only two players have had multiple seasons where they won while also missing more than half their cuts. Herman is one, performing the feat in each of the past two seasons. Scott Stallings is the other. He did it three times, winning in 2011, 2012 and 2014 while also missing more than half his cuts in each of those campaigns. 4. TEN TO ONE: Here's more proof that Herman makes the most of the times he is in contention. Herman has 10 top-10s in 195 PGA TOUR starts. Of course, three of them are victories. Since 1983, only one player with at least three PGA TOUR wins and 100 starts has a higher percentage of his top-10s that are wins. His name is Tiger Woods. The below chart shows players who didn't contend often but were able to win when they did. And it also is another example of Tiger Woods' incredible career. 2. MAKING A MOVE: The Wyndham Championship has been the PGA TOUR's regular-season finale since the FedExCup began in 2007. Herman entered last week ranked 192nd in the FedExCup, making him the lowest-ranked player to win the Wyndham in the FedExCup era.

TaylorMade announces Stealth line used by Tiger Woods at PNCTaylorMade announces Stealth line used by Tiger Woods at PNC

Two weeks ago, Tiger Woods teed off at the PNC Championship with something new under his iconic Tiger headcover. We knew from photos that the new driver in the hands of the 82-time TOUR winner (and TaylorMade staffer) was a TaylorMade Stealth Plus. The club had appeared on the USGA’s list of conforming driver heads just days before Woods played the PNC alongside his son Charlie. Given the traditional January release calendar, we assumed the new line would be launched shortly. However, we didn’t have any additional details about the club or its curious red-and-black face. With the official launch of TaylorMade’s Stealth driver line today, however, we can offer some more details on the clubs Woods wielded en route to a second-place finish with son Charlie at Orlando’s Ritz-Carlton Golf Club. Woods’ driver was a TaylorMade Stealth Plus, which is one of three models in the just-announced TaylorMade Stealth lineup. The other two family members are the Stealth and Stealth HD (High Draw). The Stealth Plus features an adjustable weight track and is meant to be more workable than the Stealth. “First of all, they have moved the (center of gravity) more forward so I’m able to curve the ball more, and you guys all know that I’ve always been a player that has worked the golf ball,” Woods said at the PNC. “It’s given me the ability to hit draws and hit cuts. “I didn’t like having just only one shot. The driver setup that we had for Augusta allowed me to draw the golf ball. But when I hit the cut, it was really short. I don’t have that difference anymore. They are very similar, which is huge. “And hey, got to love the colors.” The centerpiece technology of the Stealth driver line is likely one you’ve already seen in shots of Woods’ Stealth Plus: a carbon-fiber face. In a surprising departure from industry-standard titanium, TaylorMade engineers turned to carbon. More specifically, 60 layers of strategically arranged carbon sheets to construct the face of the Stealth for better energy transfer. TaylorMade touts a thinner, lighter, larger face that features a higher COR (coefficient of restitution) and improved face geometry. “In the mid-2000s, our research team developed an understanding that the weight of the face can affect impact efficiency, more specifically, the lighter the face, the more efficient the impact and the better the ball speed,” says Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade’s Vice President Product Creation. “We realized titanium faces could only take us so far and carbon would be the face material of the future. This breakthrough design of a lightweight carbon face in Stealth, has created a whole new starting line, a new era of drivers, a new threshold of performance and a new platform for more innovation.” TaylorMade engineers took advantage of the lightweight carbon material by creating a 26-gram face, which is 40% lighter than a titanium face of equivalent size. Because of that weight savings, the face size of Stealth is 11% larger than SIM2 and SIM2 Max drivers and nearly 20% larger than the 2020 SIM driver. The weight savings and larger face size made possible by the 60X Carbon Twist Face delivered significant ball-speed increases during player testing when comparing Stealth Plus and Stealth to the 2021 SIM2 and SIM2 Max drivers at better player swing speeds. Working in conjunction with the carbon fiber face is TaylorMade’s nanotexture face technology: A thin polyurethane layer on top of the carbon fiber creates a surface that is both strong and flexible for improved launch. It’s calibrated to produce ideal friction in dry conditions and features full-face scorelines that also perform particularly well in wet conditions. “The technological innovation of our nanotexture technology brings the entire face together and was a key to making this driver a reality,” said Tomo Bystedt, Senior Director Product Creation, Carbonwood Drivers. “Without this revolutionary cover design, we could not have achieved the launch and spin performance required to extract the optimal performance in dry as well as wet conditions. Once we added the nanotexture technology to the grooves, we were able to unlock the full performance of a carbon face.” TaylorMade also worked to give the Stealth line better sound than previous carbon drivers. Instead of muted, low-energy sounds, engineers were able to create a bright and powerful sound and feel profile. The Stealth Women’s driver combines the technology of Stealth HD in a slightly lighter head weight and with a unique colorway and aesthetic. It maintains the high MOI head design for easy, high-launch with a touch of draw. TaylorMade also announced a line of Stealth fairway woods, rescue clubs and irons on Tuesday. Woods had a 15-degree Stealth Plus 3-wood in his bag at the PNC Championship. So, now we know more about Tiger’s driver. For more on the clubs he played at the PNC Championship, click here.
