Ho Sung Choi: What’s in the bag

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Korean golf professional Ho Sung Choi, with his “fisherman swing,â€ is such a viral sensation that he’s received a sponsors exemption into the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week. For equipment fans, that means we finally get to see what clubs he has in his bag. In many of Choi’s viral golf swings, it’s easy to tell he’s been using a TaylorMade M4 driver, but the rest of his setup has remained a mystery. On Monday, during the practice rounds for the three-course AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, I tracked down Choi to get a look into his golf bag. Our questions about his clubs have finally been answered! Here’s a look at Ho Sung Choi’s full setup. Driver, fairway woods and hybrid As expected, he’s using a TaylorMade M4 driver (10.5 degrees), and it’s equipped with a UST Mamiya V2 6FS Tour prototype shaft. He fills out the top end of his bag with a Callaway Epic Flash three wood (15 degrees) set to neutral with a Fujikura Evolution V x-flex shaft, and a Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 815 hybrid (20 degrees) with a Fujikura MCH 90X shaft. Irons Choi is using TaylorMade’s 2016 Japan Gloire Forged irons that are made from Forged Stainless chromoly 4140 steel. His irons are equipped with Nippon N.S. Pro prototype shafts. Wedges, with a lucky number “8â€ Choi has two Titliest Vokey wedges (50 and 58 degrees) in the bag, each with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts in them. His 58-degree is a K-grind with 6 degrees of bounce. Choi’s translator told me the number 8 is stamped onto his wedges because it’s his lucky number. There are three reasons why the number 8 is significant, according to his translator: 1) Choi and his wife are 8 years apart from each other, 2) he started playing golf on the 8th day of a month, and 3) when the number 8 is traced, it goes on for infinity, instead of ending. Putter and golf ball Choi is using an Odyssey O-Works Red Jailbird Mini putter with a double-bend hosel and the stock Odyssey grip. He also uses a Titleist Pro V1x golf ball with “low numbers,â€ according to his translator. Custom Headcovers Clearly, Choi has fully embraced the “fisherman swing,â€ with a logo of his own. He’s using Selmo headcovers, each inscribed with his name and logo. Also, his custom, all-white iliac Golf carry bag has his logo and name on it.
