Henrik Stenson, Bryson DeChambeau share 36-hole lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard

ORLANDO, Fla. — Henrik Stenson struggled from the start in weather that was chilly even for his Swedish blood. He made enough par putts to keep momentum, ran off three straight birdies late in his second round and wound up with a share of the lead in the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. Stenson played bogey-free for a 3-under 69 and goes into the weekend with another shot at winning at Bay Hill. Bryon DeChambeau also sputtered early and came on strong at the end with a 7-foot eagle putt on the 16th and an approach to 4 feet for birdie on the 18th for a 66. “I think every week I’m good enough to win or play my best,” DeChambeau said. “It’s just sometimes a kick here, a break here and that’s just what happens.” Stenson and DeChambeau were at 11-under 133. Tiger Woods played in the afternoon and went through the front nine with no birdies and two bogeys, dropping him nine shots behind. He is coming off a runner-up finish at Innisbrook last week and has won eight times at Bay Hill. The co-leaders had a little separation over the morning wave. PGA Tour rookie Talor Gooch had five birdies on the back nine for a 70 and was two shots behind. Rickie Fowler (71), Billy Horschel (70) and Luke List (67) were five shots behind. Rory McIlroy again was slowed, this time by a pair of bogeys to start his back nine, and he shot 70. He was six shots behind, along with Ernie Els (70). “Henrik has played great,” McIlroy said. “I’m going to have to play very, very good golf on the weekend to catch him, but I’m in a better position this Friday than I was last Friday, so I’ll take anything I can get.” McIlroy missed the cut last week. So did Stenson, in his first tournament after a month break. He opened with a 64 in the warm afternoon, and then faced temperatures around 50 when he teed off Friday morning. Never mind that he grew up in Sweden. The former Open champion now lives in Orlando, and this was the kind of morning when ordinarily he would have a few cups of hot chocolate and wait until it got warmer to play. “I might be Swedish, but I’ve gone soft,” he said. “I lived in a nice climate for too many years.” He had only two birdie chances inside 30 feet on the back nine (he started on No. 10), and those were from 18 feet. And then his round nearly got away from him on the par-5 16th when he chunked a shot from the fairway bunker, pitched some 70 feet beyond the hole and had to make an 8-footer for par. He had to make a 15-foot par save after hitting into the bunker on No. 17, and he saved par from the bunker left of the 18th green by holing a 5-foot putt. “It could have easily been two or three, even three bogeys on those three holes and got away with pars on those and stayed patient and played a bit better coming in and racked up three birdies in a row,” Stenson said. “So 3 under, I’m pretty pleased with that. It wasn’t as maybe beautiful as it was yesterday, but still a solid round.”

Jon Rahm misses 10-inch putt, rallies to open Arnold Palmer Invitational in even-par 72Jon Rahm misses 10-inch putt, rallies to open Arnold Palmer Invitational in even-par 72

Arnold Palmer once opined that golf is both “deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.” In Thursday’s opening round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, Jon Rahm approached a 10-inch par putt at the par-3 seventh hole at Bay Hill Club & Lodge. After taking the putter back, Rahm decelerated on the follow-through, the ball moving just one inch. It marked the shortest missed putt of his PGA TOUR career. The world No. 1 tapped in for bogey, en route to an opening-round, even-par 72, seven strokes back of early leader Rory McIlroy. Rather than shying away from the situation, Rahm did his best to explain the short miss in his post-round meeting with the media. “I wish I could give you all the excuses in the world,” said Rahm as dusk descended upon central Florida. “It just didn’t feel good in my hands, and I tried to stop, and I didn’t. I just simply didn’t stop. I don’t know. It was very odd.” The bogey dropped Rahm to 2-over for the day. He made the turn at the same score before rallying with three birdies on the back nine, against a bogey at the par-4 18th. “It’s not like it affected my play the rest of the day, because I played really good,” Rahm reflected post-round. “But sitting at 1-under, I feel like, would feel a lot better than even par. “I’ve seen many things. I’ve seen the putter get a little stuck on a blade of grass on the way back and do something funny, hit the ground before because you’re not paying attention. I’ve seen so many things from a foot. I’ve seen some of the best putters in the world miss it because you don’t really take a proper stance. “It sucks to give away a shot like that, to be honest.”

The First Look: The RSM ClassicThe First Look: The RSM Classic

• COURSE: Sea Island GC (Seaside), 7,005 yards, par 70. Sea Island’s original layout dates back to 1929, a nine-hole links on the southern tip of St. Simon’s Island created by English architects Harry Colt and Charles Alison. Among its early enthusiasts was Bobby Jones, who described Seaside as among the best nine holes he’d ever played. Joe Lee added the “Marshside Nineâ€ in 1973, and the two nines were combined in a 1999 Tom Fazio project. Entrants also play one of their first two rounds at the par-72 Plantation course, which joined the format two years ago after Rees Jones fused two other nine-hole layouts into an 18-hole test. • FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 points. • CHARITY: Special Olympics and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia are primary beneficiaries, as the host Davis Love Foundation focuses its attention on programs centering on children and families. More than 70 other charities receive funds via the tournament’s “Birdies Fore Loveâ€ pledge program. • FIELD WATCH: St. Simon’s Island resident Patton Kizzire, just off the two-day lead in Mexico, and 2015 champion Kevin Kisner head a lineup that includes five of the top 30 in last season’s FedExCup standings. … A dozen St. Simon’s pros are entered, including tournament host and new World Golf Hall of Famer Davis Love III, two-time major champion Zach Johnson and 2017 winners Brian Harman (Wells Fargo) and Hudson Swafford (CareerBuilder). … Reigning NCAA champion Braden Thornberry is in on a sponsor exemption given to the winner of the Jones Cup. … Invitations also were handed out to former Texas A&M standout Cameron Champ, making his second pro start, as well as Love’s son Dru. • 72-HOLE RECORD: 260, Kevin Kisner (2015). • 18-HOLE RECORD: 60, Tommy Gainey (4th round, 2012). • LAST YEAR: Mac Hughes went wire-to-wire and then some, prevailing in a five-man playoff that spilled into Monday for his first PGA TOUR victory. The Canadian rookie won on the third extra hole, draining an 18-foot par save from just off the green at Seaside’s par-3 No.17. He then watched in disbelief as Blayne Barber, Henrik Norlander and finally Camilo Villegas all missed their par attempts from 10 feet and closer. Billy Horschel was the fifth man in the playoff, but went home early after a three-putt on the first extra hole. Hughes became the first rookie in 20 years to go wire-to-wire for his first PGA TOUR win, fueled by an opening 61 that was one stroke off Tommy Gainey’s course record. The last rookie to notch his first victory wire-to-wire was Tim Herron at the 1996 Honda Classic. • STORYLINES: Though past champions Kisner and Chris Kirk (2014) have been part-time residents, the tournament is still looking for its first true hometown winner. The closest a fulltimer has come was Love’s tie for fourth in 2012. … Chesson Hadley, with three top-four finishes in the new season, and Whee Kim are among a handful with a chance to displace Pat Perez atop the FedExCup standings before the holiday break. Perez is taking the week off. … It’ll be Love’s first home start as a Hall of Famer, following September’s enshrinement ceremony in New York. Aside from his 2012 performance, he hasn’t finished better than 33rd. • SHORT CHIPS: Six of the tournament’s first seven editions have been decided by no more than one shot, the lone exception being Kisner’s six-shot romp in 2015. Hughes’ triumph was the third resolved in a playoff. … The fall schedule typically is populated with first-time winners, but it hasn’t been the trend this season. The season’s first six stops produced just two – Ryan Armour (Mississippi) and Patrick Cantlay (Las Vegas). … Though nobody will have played all seven weeks of the new season’s fall schedule, Villegas and Kim are among a half-dozen set to head into the break with six starts. • TELEVISION: Thursday-Sunday, 1:30-4:30 p.m. ET (Golf Channel). • PGA TOUR LIVE: None. • RADIO: Thursday-Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, noon-5 p.m. (PGA TOUR Radio on SiriusXM and PGATOUR.com).
