Fleetwood grabs 54-hole lead at The Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Tommy Fleetwood has won in Scotland, England, the United Arab Emirates, France, South Africa, even Kazakhstan. Victory in the U.S. hasn’t happened yet. Related: Leaderboard | Contenders at The Honda Classic have endured hardship The Englishman is in position to change that Sunday. Fleetwood birdied four of his final six holes on the way to a 3-under 67 in the third round of The Honda Classic on Saturday, moving to 5 under for the week and one shot ahead of Brendan Steele at PGA National. Fleetwood has been close to getting that elusive win on U.S. soil with two runner-up finishes. “If you’re going to win around here, you’ve proven yourself as an all-around golfer,” Fleetwood said. “Realistically, yeah, it probably is another step in my career. I’m not going to lie and say, `Ah, I don’t really mind about winning in America.’ Of course I do. I want to win everywhere I play and the PGA TOUR is for sure one of those places where I haven’t done it yet.” Steele shot 71. He was alone on the lead through 36 holes at 5 under, birdied two of his first three on Saturday to get to 7 under and then made four bogeys in an eight-hole span. But he survived, which was the order of the day for the leaders. “It feels like a major championship toughness-wise,” said Daniel Berger, who is three shots back. Fleetwood rolled in a birdie from nearly 50 feet on the par-3 17th to highlight his big finish. But he thought his two most important shots on Saturday were putts that dropped on the 10th and 15th holes. And both were for bogey. Let that speak for how challenging PGA National was — yet again. Of the 69 players who made the cut, only 11 broke par on Saturday. Fleetwood’s 67 was the second-best round of the day; Mackenzie Hughes, who made the cut on the number Friday, shot a 4-under 66 on Saturday and went from tied for 59th to start the day to tied for eighth with 18 holes left. Fleetwood’s score of 5 under is the highest by any leader through 54 holes since the Honda moved to PGA National. “It’s just a strong test of your all-around game,” Fleetwood said. Luke Donald birdied the last to finish a 71 and get to 3 under for the week, two shots off the lead. Lee Westwood (71) was tied with Donald going into the final round, surviving an up-and-down day where he birdied two of his first three holes — and then made just one more in the last 15 holes. “I didn’t have my A game today,” Westwood said. “But, ground it out and didn’t do too much damage. I don’t feel like two shots is much around this golf course.” True, but the Honda — at least the current incarnation of it — is not exactly known for comeback victories. Since the tournament moved to PGA National, 12 of the 13 winners have been either first or second after 54 holes. And in terms of deficits overcome, the biggest has been three shots — Padraig Harrington rallied after being three back of Ian Poulter in 2015, and Ernie Els was three shots behind Donald, Matt Jones and Mark Calcavecchia in 2008 before prevailing. Berger (69), Charl Schwartzel (70) and Sungjae Im (70) were tied for fifth at 2 under, three back of Fleetwood. There was a five-way tie for the lead — Schwartzel, Steele, Im, Donald and Fleetwood — on the back side for a brief spell Saturday at 4 under. It didn’t last long as all five dropped a shot within a span of about 15 minutes, a span in which Schwartzel got a reminder of how fast things can change at PGA National. He put his tee ball in the bunker on the par-4 16th, then saw his second shot hit the lip of the sand and plummet into the water to set up a double bogey. “I thought I was really good today out there,” Schwartzel said. “I played well, made a stupid decision on 16, but hit good shots after that and kept going. It’s a tough golf course.”

Honma releases Justin Rose’s prototype irons to retailHonma releases Justin Rose’s prototype irons to retail

When Justin Rose signed with Honma in January 2019, the obvious question for equipment fans was: “What model clubs will he use?â€ Rose quickly put speculation to rest with a Twitter post showing off never-before-seen T//World 747 Rose Proto MB irons. Rose wasted no time notching a PGA TOUR win using the prototype irons; he won the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in January. Equipment fans then began to wonder whether the “Rose Protoâ€ irons would eventually hit retail. Honma has officially announced that the clubs are now available for purchase. According to Honma, the irons – which are forged from S20C mild carbon — were designed with “extensive input and directionâ€ from Rose, who has been using the irons throughout 2019. “The idea of having a hand in the collaborative design process for my set of clubs was extremely exciting,â€ Rose said in a press release. “Working with Honma master craftsmen to create an iron that felt and looked great for me was one of the biggest thrills of my career.â€ Honma’s Chief Marketing Officer John Kawaja says he was prepared for Rose’s exacting eye and willingness to be a part of the design process. “Going into this, we knew how particular and discerning Justin is and we had a feeling he’d be interested in contributing to the design of his clubs,â€ Kawaja said in a press release. Honma’s T//World 747 Rose Proto MB irons (4-10 iron) will sell for $175 per club, and a 3-iron will also be available for individual purchase.

Most-Picked Players: John Deere ClassicMost-Picked Players: John Deere Classic

PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO If you ever wanted a litmus test for course history, you got one. Even though Daniel Berger is an accomplished and dynamic two-time PGA TOUR winner, he’s a first-timer at the John Deere Classic. Yet, he’s as clear-cut the most-owned in any tournament in recent memory. Chosen by 64.9 percent of gamers who set lineups, that’s 18 percent greater than runner up Charley Hoffman, who himself hasn’t made the trip to TPC Deere Run since missing the cut in 2013. The attention and love overlooks the fact that Berger is just 24 years of age. More powerful and poised than polished, he embodies exciting possibilities for gamers in every format every time he laces up the spikes. And while investors are no doubt hoping for a continuation of form that yielded a playoff loss in his last start at the Travelers Championship, the chip on his shoulder placed there by Jordan Spieth doesn’t hurt. Rounding out the top five, recent winners Kyle Stanley (Quicken Loans National) and Brian Harman (Wells Fargo Championship) flank JDC defending champion Ryan Moore, who’s returning from a strained tendon in his left shoulder. You need to lower your focus to sixth and 10th to see tournament heroes Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker, respectively. Them changes. Notables not shown below include Bubba Watson (12th, 12.4 percent), Nick Watney (16th, 9.0 percent), William McGirt (18th, 7.6 percent) and Robert Streb (21st, 6.3 percent). NOTE: Rob’s Rating refers to where our Fantasy Insider slotted a golfer in his Power Rankings. Golfers in the Power Rankings and outside the top 10 in most owned PGA TOUR Fantasy One & Done presented by SERVPRO Once upon a time, well, actually several times not long ago, Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson were the 1 and 1a at the John Deere Classic. Theirs was (still is?) a combination of talent and timing as the majority of one-and-done worthies prepped elsewhere for The Open Championship. That both are relative locals is forever convenient, but their success at TPC Deere Run was never guaranteed, either. It’s 2017, however, and One & Dones don’t wait for anyone. Brian Harman prevailed both here in 2014 and two months ago at the Wells Fargo Championship. He loves to go low and you’re not going to find another in the field who’s as confident with a putter in his left-handed grip. So, he represents the No. 1 slot properly. Tournament debutant Daniel Berger ranks second. As conveyed above for PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO, it’s a sign of confidence from gamers, but it also can’t go overlooked that he may not value as strongly the rest of the way, or at least as obviously. Now, and finally, we arrive at ZJ in third and Stricker in fourth. It’s more impressive that the all-time earnings leader of the tournament was selected by 8.9 percent of you because he’s 50 years old. He’s owned by nearly three times as many gamers who plucked Charles Howell III at 10th. CH3 opened with a bogey-free, 8-under 63, two strokes lower than anyone else in Thursday’s morning wave. Notables outside the top 10 include Kevin Kisner (11th, 2.8 percent), Kevin Na (12th, 1.4 percent), Bubba Watson (15th, 0.8 percent), Daniel Summerhays (16th, 0.7 percent) and William McGirt (T20, 0.4 percent). Danny Lee, who slots sixth, withdrew after a first-round 74. PGA TOUR Champions One & Done presented by SERVPRO If the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship opened the season, would there be any doubt that Bernhard Langer would either threaten or even establish the record for highest ownership percentage in the history of fantasy gaming at PGATOUR.com? He’s the three-time defending champion (on different courses to boot) and the tournament ranks T2 among all events in total prize money. Instead, this is the 13th event contributing to the One & Done and the U.S. Senior Open Championship contested two weeks ago boasted the largest purse. So, Langer is way down – way down! – at sixth in ownership percentage at just 6.1. I can’t confirm it, but I wouldn’t rule out that gamers’ commitment at Caves Valley Golf Club equals all of the remaining gamers who have submitted a pick every week and have yet to burn Langer. In my preseason primer in January, I angled at using him this week. While tempted to deviate at Salem Country Club (where he placed T18), he paid off my patience in the opening round of the SENIOR PLAYERS. Langer carded a bogey-free, 7-under 65. Larry Mize leads after a nine-birdie 64, but he was not chosen by any gamer this week. Notables outside the top 10 include Kevin Sutherland (12th, 2.5 percent), local favorite Fred Funk (14th, 2.0 percent), Joe Durant (T16, 1.5 percent) and Colin Montgomerie (T16, 1.5 percent). Preston McClellan, the digital communications manager for the PGA TOUR and member of the Experts panel for PGA TOUR Champions One & Done presented by SERVPRO was the only gamer who selected Wes Short, Jr.

How expected winds influenced course setup at Torrey PinesHow expected winds influenced course setup at Torrey Pines

LA JOLLA, Calif. - It was breezy early and often Thursday on the Pacific coastline, as sustained winds of 15-20 mph - with gusts up to 30 mph - greeted the Farmers Insurance Open field at Torrey Pines. This week's unique twist: a two-course setup (Torrey North and Torrey South) meant that the course setup for Wednesday's first round would mirror the second-round setup. Conditions weren't as blustery on Wednesday, with winds 6-12 mph, but the strategy implemented by the PGA TOUR Rules committee is simple: prepare for the most demanding conditions. "We didn't really worry about yesterday's wind as much," said PGA TOUR Senior Tournament Director Ken Tackett, who is setting up Torrey South's back nine this week, "because it was so much more significant today than yesterday. "Sometimes you have very differing winds and have a more moderate setup to handle both situations, but you always set up for the most severe weather conditions for a given round. We knew that Round 2 was going to have the Santa Ana winds, so our focus was on today." Sam Ryder leads the Farmers Insurance Open at 12-under total, following an opening-round 64 at Torrey North with a second-round 68 on the more demanding Torrey South. The Round 2 scoring average at par-72 Torrey South was 75.859, compared to a 72.217 average in Round 1. Torrey North averaged 73.179 in the second round, compared to a 69.731 average in the opening round. Thursday's second round wasn't easy for anyone - the low round was 67, carded by Jon Rahm and Tano Goya at Torrey North. Rahm, who has won four of his last five official starts worldwide, said he would be "skipping out of the golf course today" in giddiness after his round. The conditions were tough but fair, with a setup prepared a day in advance. One notable adjustment: the par-5 13th hole at Torrey South, which plays to 621 yards on the scorecard, measured just 538 yards for the first and second rounds. The hole yielded just seven birdies Thursday, compared to 39 on Wednesday, as the wind whipped throughout Round 2. Players might have been caught slightly off-guard upon arriving at No. 13 tee, but upon further reflection, they knew it was a product of Mother Nature's plan for the week. "That was a bit of a surprise," Ryder said of the adjustment on No. 13, "but I think they were just prepared for some tougher conditions. "It turned from a three-shot, tough layup, to hit a good drive and you could go for the green in two and make birdie." "I didn't mind it," added Max Homa, the California native who stands T4 entering the third round. "I love that hole being up, even if it's not windy. The other option is 60 yards behind; there's a bunker there that if you can't cover it, the fairway is far too small." Another notable adjustment on Torrey South came at the par-4 17th, which offers left and right tee boxes, the left box directly behind a canyon that runs parallel to the fairway. The 17th hole, like No. 13, played directly into the wind Thursday. Driven by this knowledge, the right tee box was utilized for the Farmers' opening two rounds. "It's still a tough hole, right into the wind, but you have the full fairway to play with," Tackett said. "It pulls the shot away from the canyon a little bit." Those who faced the more difficult Torrey South in more benign Wednesday conditions had a less scoreable scenario on the gentler North on Thursday. Those who had a more birdie-friendly test at the North on Wednesday had to turn a more brutish South amidst Thursday's gusts. The numbers suggest that it (mostly) evens out. Of the top 13 players on the leaderboard through two rounds, seven players went North to South, while six went South to North. Of the 73 players to make the cut, 33 went North to South, with 40 going South to North. One thing is for sure: the conditions meant a stark day-to-day contrast outside San Diego. The FedExCup leader perhaps said it best. "Yesterday was very easy," Rahm said. "Today was very hard."
