Five memorable quotes from Tiger Woods at Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods didn’t compete at the Hero World Challenge, but the tournament host made his presence felt throughout the week. The 82-time TOUR winner conducted a State of the Union-type press conference early-week at Albany in the Bahamas, gave putting lessons to pro-am participants, walked his dogs via cart, spectated alongside son Charlie and more. Woods is scheduled to compete at The Match this Saturday, partnering Rory McIlroy against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, and at next week’s PNC Championship alongside Charlie. Here’s a rundown of five memorable Woods quotes from the week at the Hero World Challenge. “I can hit whatever shot you want. I just can’t walk.” Tiger Woods had the intent of competing in the Hero World Challenge, of which he is a five-time champion, but a bout with plantar fasciitis prevented his appearance. The condition, one of the most common causes of heel pain, is an inflammation of a thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that connects the heel bone to the toes. Woods said that his form has been sound in casual rounds at home, noting “a couple 63s and 64s,” and that he can walk nine holes but the prospect of 72 holes was likely too much at this point. He remains confident in his ability to compete in a cart the next two weeks at The Match and PNC Championship, respectively. “You don’t want to go down the surgical route. I chose to stretch and relax.” Just 5% of those with plantar fasciitis opt for surgery, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, as a number of surgical risks include infection and nerve injury. Consequently, Woods has opted for the more common recovery route, allowing the inflammation to decrease via staying off his feet as much as possible. “To get not only just one, but I’d like to get a big one too.” Woods was posed the question by Paul Azinger on Saturday’s broadcast of the Hero World Challenge: How motivating is the prospect of earning an 83rd PGA TOUR title to break a tie with Sam Snead as winningest player in TOUR history? Woods was direct. It is motivating to be sure, and he doesn’t intend on limiting his ambitions to a standard TOUR event. He’s intent on pursuing another major title. Woods built his 2022 schedule around competing at The 150th Open at St. Andrews. Not only did he achieve this goal, but he also competed at the Masters and PGA Championship, advancing to the weekend in each. He missed the cut at The Open but remains steadfast in his belief that he can go toe-to-toe with “the kids” and return to contention in TOUR starts, including majors, moving forward. “I told Charlie, ‘Don’t copy my swing. Copy Rory’s.’” The comparisons between Tiger and Charlie Woods are inevitable. As documented in a PGA TOUR compilation video by social content manager Scott Kunath, their mannerisms are uncanny. But Tiger isn’t necessarily encouraging Charlie to copy his swing move-for-move. In fact, he suggests taking notes from the action of world No. 1 Rory McIlroy. Woods notes that McIlroy is rarely off-balance on his swing, a trait that Woods finds more difficult to maintain as he works through various injuries. “Have you ever seen Rory off balance on a shot? Not ever,” Woods said on the Hero World Challenge broadcast. “That’s one of the things my dad instilled in me, is that you should be able to balance and hold your finish until the ball rolls and stops. You can swing as hard as you want, but you need to have balance.” “It’s getting to a point where I can’t get in his head and then no one else can get in there, either. That’s what my dad believed in.” Woods always felt autonomy with his own swing, and he wants Charlie to feel the same way. When it comes to the mental side, though, the elder Woods isn’t afraid to make his mark. Woods fondly remembers the mental tricks his dad would utilize to bolster his mental toughness, and he recalls certain tricks that TOUR veterans would try on younger players to keep them on their toes – “certain things with clubs and shoes and timing and trying to get into your head; the early walk.” He intends for his son to be ready for whatever might come his way. As a dad does.

The driver Tiger Woods used in his TOUR debut at the 1992 Genesis InvitationalThe driver Tiger Woods used in his TOUR debut at the 1992 Genesis Invitational

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Tiger Woods’ PGA TOUR debut at Riviera Country Club. The 16-year-old needed permission from his school principal to play, and he called it a “life-changing moment for me” after shooting 72-75 to miss the cut. Little did we know what the next three decades would hold. Woods went on to amass a record-tying 82 TOUR wins, including 15 majors. He’s back at Riviera this week as the host of the tournament now known as The Genesis Invitational. Much has changed in the world of golf, as well. Most notably for our Equipment Report, there have been huge advancements in club technology since 1992. To celebrate Woods’ 30-year anniversary of his PGA TOUR debut, we wanted to take a closer look at the driver the 16-year-old Woods used that week (Want to read more on Tiger’s historic gear? Click here for more on Tiger’s famed Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter). As a TaylorMade representative has confirmed, young Woods used a TaylorMade Tour Preferred Burner Plus driver equipped with a “Tour Gold From TaylorMade” shaft. Woods averaged 263.3 yards off the tee in his two rounds at Riviera, slightly below the field average (263.9 yards) for those two days and 25 yards between the leader in that category (Joey Sindelar, 288.0 yards). Fred Couples, who went on to win that week, averaged 282.5 yards in the first two rounds, while Davis Love III, the 36-hole leader who eventually fell in a playoff to Couples, averaged 283.8. Woods ranked 77th in the 144-player field in that statistic. TaylorMade was a pioneer in the metalwood space, releasing the first metal driver, the Pittsburgh Persimmon, in 1979. The Burner Plus model that Woods used in 1992 was part of a series of TaylorMade drivers that were available in the late 1980s and early 1990s. According to a TaylorMade catalog from 1989, the Tour Preferred drivers were made with stronger-than-usual lofts, but the designs utilized “tri-dimensional weighting” to move the center of gravity lower and farther back in the heads. The combination of strong lofts and rearward weighting allowed TaylorMade to enhance both distance and accuracy. The drivers also were designed with thinner hosels to reduce drag throughout the swing, and the reduction in weight allowed TaylorMade to increase perimeter weighting in the clubheads for increased forgiveness. If you read up about new golf club technology in the year 2022, golf club companies are still trying to achieve similar engineering improvements. The typical goal is to reposition weight in a head to enhance forgiveness and increase speed. Woods’ Burner Plus was made of stainless steel, which was a common material that drivers used in the era between persimmon and the introduction of titanium in the early 90s. As you’ll notice, Woods’ driver had in 1992 a significantly smaller head than the drivers of today. Drivers have gotten significantly bigger as materials have gotten lighter, and companies have gotten smarter through the years. In his most recent appearance, at the 2021 PNC Championship, Woods used a TaylorMade Stealth Plus driver that debuted TaylorMade’s new carbonwood technology. The club’s black-and-red face is made of 60 layers of carbon, has sole-weight and hosel adjustability, and a crown made of carbon. The Stealth Plus is a far technological cry from the driver Woods used in his PGA TOUR debut 30 years ago. Just for kicks, if you’re interested in owning a Tour Preferred Burner Plus for yourself (if you don’t have one in the garage already), they’re readily available on third-party websites for less than $20. Pick one up and give it a try: Our guess is you won’t hit it nearly as far or as straight as a 16-year-old Woods!

Woods, Mickelson to stage TV match with Brady, ManningWoods, Mickelson to stage TV match with Brady, Manning

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are ready for a made-for-TV rematch at a time when fans are craving live action. And this time, they’ll have company. Turner Sports says quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will join them for a two-on-two match sometime in May. Missing from the announcement were such details as when and where the match would be played, except that tournament organizers would work with government and health officials to meet safety and health standards. Turner said all donations and fundraising from “The Match: Champions for Charity” would benefit relief efforts for the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will be televised on TNT, with social and digital content leading up and during the event available through Bleacher Report and House of Highlights. “It’s on now,” Mickelson tweeted Wednesday afternoon responding to Bleacher Report. He added that he would be paired with Brady, saying: “After feeling the sting of defeat the first time around, Looks like (at)TigerWoods is bringing a ringer to The Match ((hash)PeytonManning). I’m bringing a GOAT. (at)TomBrady — Ready to hit bombs?” The first match over Thanksgiving weekend in November 2018 was supposed to be pay-per-view, except that technical difficulties allowed everyone to watch. It lacked some of wild bets both players had teased, and the trash talking was forced at times. Mickelson ended up winning the $9 million winner-take-all purse in a wedge contest under the lights when the matched ended in a tie. Live golf was last seen on television March 12, the first round of THE PLAYERS Championship as developments with the new coronavirus accelerated at such a rate that sports began shutting down. The PGA TOUR first decided not to have fans at the TPC Sawgrass, then canceled its premier event, and then began canceling or postponing all tournaments across each of its tours. Woods was not at THE PLAYERS. The defending Masters champion has not played since he finished last in his Genesis Invitational at Riviera on Feb. 16. Saying his back did not feel ready, Woods chose not to play the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship, the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and THE PLAYERS Championship. Woods and Manning have played together in pro-ams on the PGA TOUR. The Palm Beach Post has reported that Brady, who recently signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has joined fabled Seminole Golf Club in south Florida.
