Featured Groups: Tiger Woods, Tommy Fleetwood paired at TOUR Championship

The final event of the 2017-18 PGA TOUR season is here, with golf’s biggest prize up for grabs. The FedExCup will be awarded on Sunday to one of the 30 players in the field at the TOUR Championship. The top five players in FedExCup points control their destiny. If Bryson DeChambeau (1), Justin Rose (2), Tony Finau (3), Dustin Johnson (4) or Justin Thomas (5) wins the TOUR Championship, he will be guaranteed the FedExCup. The other 25 players each require help in order to wrap their hands around the FedExCup and its $10 million bonus. PGA TOUR LIVE will air live coverage for the first two rounds (Thursday/Friday) starting at 10 a.m. ET with a preview show, then going directly to the first tee time at 11:40 a.m. ET. Featured Holes coverage will then begin of the par-4 first, the par-3 15th and the par-5 18th. Weekend coverage of the final two rounds will go directly to Featured Holes coverage starting at 12 noon (Saturday) and 11:30 a.m. (Sunday). A free live stream on Twitter will be available on Thursday and Friday between 10 a.m. to approximately 11:35 a.m. ET. Players will be paired in twosomes for each day and will be re-paired before every round. For Thursday’s first round at East Lake, players are paired according to their FedExCup points standing, with the final twosome of DeChambeau and Rose teeing off at 2 p.m. ET. MORE: PGA TOUR LIVE | Tee times Here’s a look at some of the Featured Groups on Thursday (FedExCup ranking in parentheses): Tommy Fleetwood (19), Tiger Woods (20): Woods – the only two-time FedExCup champ — is making his first TOUR Championship appearance in five years. He won at East Lake in 2007 in the inaugural year of the FedExCup. Fleetwood is making his first career start at the TOUR Championship. Two weeks ago at the BMW Championship, Woods opened with a 62, while Fleetwood shot consecutive 62s in the middle two rounds. Tee time: 12:30 p.m. ET. Rory McIlroy (17), Xander Schauffele (18): Both know what it’s like to win at East Lake. McIlroy won the FedExCup title in 2016 in a three-man playoff for the TOUR Championship, while Schauffele won the TOUR Championship last season to put a bow on his Rookie of the Year campaign. Both played well at the BMW Championship, each finishing inside the top 5. Tee time: 12:40 p.m. ET. Brooks Koepka (7), Bubba Watson (8): Between them, they’ve combined for five wins this season. Oh, and you may have heard – each one drives the ball a very long way. Watson ranks seventh in driving distance average at 313.1 yards; Koepka ranks eighth at 313.0 yards. Neither has made much noise during the Playoffs, although Koepka finished strongly at the BMW. Tee time: 1:30 p.m. ET. Justin Thomas (5), Keegan Bradley (6): Last year’s FedExCup champ playing with the most recent winner in the FedExCup Playoffs. Thomas did not win the TOUR Championship last season, but his second-place finish was good enough to earn him the FedExCup title. He’d like to win both this time. Bradley ended a six-year winless streak on TOUR with his playoff victory over Justin Rose at Aronimink two weeks ago. Tee time: 1:40 p.m. ET Tony Finau (3), Dustin Johnson (4): Remember what we said about the power of Koepka and Watson off the tee? Well, these two are statistically even more powerful. Finau ranks third in driving distance at 316.3 yards, while Johnson is sixth at 314.2 yards. Both also have the same number of top-10s this season – a TOUR-leading 11 – but Finau still is looking for his first victory of the year. If he claims the TOUR Championship, he’ll also win the FedExCup. Tee time: 1:50 p.m. ET Bryson DeChambeau (1), Justin Rose (2): DeChambeau won the first two Playoffs events, guaranteeing the top spot going into East Lake. Rose has finished T-2 and solo second in his last two starts. While DeChambeau is making his first appearance at East Lake, Rose has a very good track record at the course, with a couple of seconds among his five top-10 finishes. Tee time: 2 p.m. ET

Haotong Li looks to break local drought in AsiaHaotong Li looks to break local drought in Asia

Hoatong Li could become the first local winner on the PGA TOUR’s Asia swing after an impressive opening to the World Golf Championships–HSBC Champions in China. The 24-year-old Chinese star – who will make his Presidents Cup debut in December for the International team – fired an 8-under 64 at Sheshan International Golf Club to lead by one over Frenchman Victor Perez. Since the PGA TOUR began playing official events in Asia in 2009, a native of the host country has yet to find their way to the winner’s circle. This season has seen the streak under threat with Byeong An going close (T6) in Korea at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES. Hideki Matsuyama (second) was closer still in Japan at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP. Now Li – a two-time winner on the European Tour – has set himself up with a great chance. “Today is a pretty good start and good beginning,â€ Li said. “Obviously it would be great joy for Chinese golfers and Chinese golf fans to have a Chinese player winning a WGC-HSBC Champions here in China, but for the next three days, anything could happen. “So I don’t want to think too much about it. I just want to focus and concentrate on the upcoming three days because anything can happen. I just want to do a good job to keep this momentum going for the next three days.â€ Li had missed four of his last seven cuts around the world leading into the event, but said a return to his old clubs sparked a turnaround. He was pleasantly surprised. “I didn’t feel good with my new irons, and I actually had to change back to my old clubs this week to feel more comfortable in my own swing and putting,â€ he explained. “I switched back to the round grip and find the rhythm a lot … totally changed my swing feeling.â€ Li was a clear crowd favorite on Thursday despite playing in a group with the always popular Phil Mickelson. Mickelson also draws a crowd in China and has been doing so for years. In fact, a decade ago he posed for a photo with Li who was 14 at the time as an up-and-coming junior.

Marcus Manley takes First Round lead in APGA Tour Valley ForgeMarcus Manley takes First Round lead in APGA Tour Valley Forge

Blue Bell, PA – Veteran pro golfer Marcus Manley shot a bogey-free round of 65 to seize the first-round lead at APGA Tour Valley Forge, the newly-minted professional golf tournament at Bluestone Country Club. It is the first event of the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Fall Series and the first visit to the northeast for the circuit that has become a force driving greater diversity in the sport of golf. The players are competing for $25,000, including a $7,500 check to the winner. Another $15,000 in bonus money will be awarded to the top points earners in the Fall Series, which continues in Atlanta next month before culminating in Los Angeles in November. Manley registered six birdies on the par-71, 6,455-yard Bluestone Country Club course, never needing a putt of more than 10 feet during his six-under round. He birdied the first three holes, including a 22-foot chip-in on the second, and ended up with a four-stroke lead over Alec Martinez of Orland Park, Illinois. Martinez’s two-under 69 was the only sub-par round in fair conditions on the challenging layout. “I was in the right frame of mind at the outset. I decided not to force anything,” stated Manley, a Washington D.C. native now residing in Kissimmee, Florida. The longtime APGA Tour and minitour veteran, 37, has previous APGA Tour victories in Tampa and Maryland as part of a career dotted with Latinoamerica Tour experience, a Korn Ferry (Nationwide)Tour start and various qualifying school opportunities. He suffered a wrist injury along the way and worked in golf industry teaching and operations roles but is now back at it fulltime. “I love the game. The ultimate goal is still the PGA TOUR,” Manley continued. “Hoping I can keep the same mindset going tomorrow.” Patrick Newcomb of Jacksonville, Florida, and Trey Valentine of Melbourne, Florida, were in at even-par 71 with four players in a group at one over par, including Rovonta Young, of Huntsville, Alabama, winner of APGA Tour at World Golf Village earlier this year. Among the Philadelphia region players at the top end of the leaderboard were Zach Juhasz, of Bethlehem, who fired a two-over 73. Louis Kelly, the assistant pro at Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson Township, NJ, also shot a two-over 73. The Farmers Insurance Fall Series continues Oct.17-19 with the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Atlanta Championship ($25,000 purse) at White Oak Golf Club at the Clubs of Peachtree City, near Atlanta, GA. The final event of the series and the 2021 season is Nov. 7-9, the APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Fall Series Finale ($30,000 purse), at Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles. APGA Tour Valley Forge is hosted by the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board, which promotes the Montgomery County region’s 50-plus golf courses as part of its Monto Golf initiative. APGA Tour Valley Forge week kicked off Sunday with an Advocates Foundation Farmers Insurance Youth Program event at Walnut Lane Golf Club in Philadelphia, where The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia brought over 40 youths to interact with APGA Tour officials and players. The daylong schedule included golf clinic activities plus health and wellness discussions and raffle prizes for participants. Same day scoring detail for APGA Tour Valley Forge at www.bluegolf.com.
