Emergency 9: Fantasy golf advice from Round 4 of Valspar ChampionshipEmergency 9: Fantasy golf advice from Round 4 of Valspar Championship

Here are nine tidbits from the final round of the Valspar Championship that gamers can use tomorrow, this weekend or down the road. Casey on Point Paul Casey fired a final-round 65 to post 10-under-par 274 to win the Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida. The Englishman picks up his first TOUR win since the 2009 Shell Houston Open and his first win worldwide since the 2014 KLM Open (European Tour). Casey joined the European Tour this season to improve his chances of making the Ryder Cup team. This won’t hurt! What a difference a day makes, as Casey played in the final group on Saturday with Corey Conners. The rookie beat him by three shots and Casey dropped to T11, five shots off the lead. Casey’s final round included six birdies and one bogey to tie the low round of the day (65). The key to his victory was his excellent short game. He navigated three difficult up-and-downs in The Snake Pit to close his round and post THE number. His card for the week was spectacular, as he finished in the top 10 in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green (6th), Strokes Gained: Approach-the-Green (7th), Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green (3rd) and was 15th in Strokes Gained: Putting. His previous best finish at this event was T37 in four tries. Gamers have always rated Casey, minus the lack of wins, because when he makes the cut, he cashes very nice checks. He’s made 168 cuts on TOUR and 104 have cashed in the top 25. Of those 104 top-25 finishes, 51, nearly half, have painted the top 10. Of his seven starts this year, six have cashed for T19 or better. His last MC on TOUR was the 2017 Sony Open. Gamers’ Choices — PGA TOUR Fantasy Game presented by SERVPRO This group was the definition of all or nothing! If you’re not playing the chalk, you’re dead. If you’re not picking the correct chalk, you’re dying. Fantasy golf is hard! Gamers’ Choices — PGA TOUR One & Done presented by SERVPRO This one is going to sting for the Justin Rose supporters, while the #NappyFactor army will be much happier at the end of today than they were yesterday. Next week, we’ll see if Tiger Woods breaks the Dustin Johnson record for usage in this format. Close Encounters There’s no point to rehash all 1,239,398 stats revealed about Tiger Woods this week. I learned that he is not the finished article, but I was more than encouraged by his performance on a track that he’s unfamiliar with playing. He struggled on the greens to find the proper speed and line and was obviously fooled a few times. Sunday’s red shirt didn’t bring the magic with his iron game either, as he didn’t have too many makeable birdie putts. I would assume this all changes next week at Bay Hill where he’s won eight times. The momentum is real and so is the “back” in comeback. Next stop is the winner’s circle. Reed-ing Between the Lines The “other” red shirt on Sunday needed just two shots on the final green to force a playoff with Casey. Patrick Reed took three instead, including the first two from essentially the same spot, and did not force extra holes. Shot No. 1 climbed most of the hill before returning to his feet. Shot No. 2 was what he had in mind for his first attempt. Gamers in all formats exhaled regardless since this was his first top 10 since September and third at Valspar. Play Them All It’s hard to be patient, but those of you who did with #NappyFactor Sergio Garcia were rewarded. The first-time father-to-be posted 69-65 on the weekend to cash for solo fourth. His wife is due next Sunday, so he’s out at Bay Hill. His next event will be WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in her native Austin. … Reigning champion Adam Hadwin ended up being low Canadian for the week, posting T12. His final round 68 continued his excellent play at Innisbrook and on TOUR, as he’s inside the top 12 for his third event running. The confluence of course form with recent form was an easy one for gamers this week. No Country for Old Men The 40-year-old Paul Casey wasn’t the only “old dude” who played great this week. Rory Sabbatini, who will turn 42 in April, fired 67-69 for his first top 10 since the Wyndham last summer. … Ryder Cup Captain Jim Furyk, 47, continues his legend as a course horse at Innisbrook. This was his third top-10 finish since his win in 2010. It is also his first top-10 finish in 18 events dating back to November of 2016. …  Presidents Cup Captain Steve Stricker, 51, continued his hot form, as he rode the momentum from his PGA Champions victory in Tucson to T12 this week. In three TOUR events this yea,r he’s cashed for T31 or better. … Zach Johnson, 42, has now hit the top 25 in six of seven events this season after T16. Sunday Silence Corey Conners couldn’t handle the leaderboard on Sunday and who can blame him? Those were some big boys breathing down his neck. This experience will be worth more than the T16 paycheck, his best ever, moving forward. … Sadly for gamers Justin Rose had a front-row seat in the final group to Conners’ 77. This was a disappointment for gamers, as Rose (and Conners) has had plenty of winning experience and didn’t have to worry about the circus playing with Woods. Rose will be second choice next week at Bay Hill. … Sam Burns made a bogey on the final hole that knocked him out of the top 10 (T12). He doesn’t have status on TOUR, so he loses an event moving forward. He’s in the field at Bay Hill next week and Memorial in June. There’s no doubt about his talent, as he led the field in Strokes Gained: Putting, but there is no guarantee about his schedule. Study Hall Garcia and Reed led the field in birdies with 18. … Casey only made four bogeys and a double on the week, while Hadwin had only five bogeys to lead the avoidance department. … Alex Cejka returned to action this week after WD at The Honda Classic and led the field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green. … Matt Wallace defeated Andrew Johnston in the Hero Indian Open. Emiliano Grillo continued his excellent play, finishing sixth. He’s in the field with jet lag at Bay Hill next week. Tweet of the day:

Bryson DeChambeau outduels Tiger Woods at Dell Technologies ChampionshipBryson DeChambeau outduels Tiger Woods at Dell Technologies Championship

NORTON, Mass. – Bryson DeChambeau spent a good portion of his third round Sunday chatting up his playing partner. You could’ve sworn he was prepping for an oral exam in quantum mechanics. Meanwhile, he also managed to fit in four birdies in his first seven holes, showing he had lost none of the momentum from last week’s victory in the FedExCup Playoffs opener. He was on top of his game, on top of the FedExCup standings and having a blast. Yet he was nervous. With good reason. “It’s Tiger Woods, guys,â€ DeChambeau explained, the simplest answer always being the best. For the first time in his blossoming career, DeChambeau played a competitive round with his childhood idol. Although they’ve become frequent practice partners, DeChambeau knew Sunday was different. Tiger would have his game face on. As it turns out, DeChambeau can deliver one pretty good game face, too. The FedExCup leader shot an 8-under 63 that left him at 12 under through three rounds of the Dell Technologies Championship and gives him a golden opportunity to claim the first two Playoffs events. For the second straight week, he’ll be in the final twosome in the final round, this time with tournament leader Abraham Ancer, who’s 13 under. Meanwhile, Woods had to settle for a 3-under 68 that left him at 7 under and perhaps too far back to break his five-year victory drought in Monday’s Labor Day finish at TPC Boston. Afterwards, DeChambeau wore a huge smile, and it was tough to tell if it came from moving up the leaderboard or simply because he fulfilled a childhood fantasy. “I’ve admired him my whole entire life,â€ DeChambeau said. “And to be finally able to play with him under tournament conditions, it was different. I was a little nervous, for sure. But I was able to get out there and execute shots and worry about my game and focus on hitting the best shots possible – and I was able to play really well like that.â€ DeChambeau said his nervousness didn’t disappear until after the seventh hole. By then, he was 4 under on his round. Woods was 3 under on his round at that point, but while DeChambeau remained hot on the back nine, Woods quickly cooled off. He wouldn’t post another birdie until the par-5 18th. “I didn’t get a lot out of my round today,â€ Tiger shrugged. Still, it was an interesting, entertaining Sunday – even if Bryson did most of the talking. Told that Woods didn’t always seem this chatty, DeChambeau corrected, “He still isn’t, by the way.â€ Woods was asked if earlier in his career – in other words, the dominant Tiger years — he would have been as willing to engage with his playing partner. He referenced the names of players much older than him: Mark O’Meara, Mark Calcavecchia, Davis Love III, Fred Couples and the late Payne Stewart. “We were always chatty,â€ Tiger said. “When you’re playing with friends, yeah, you’re competing, but you’re still playing with friends.â€ Whether DeChambeau has reached that level of friendship is tough to say. But it’s apparent that Woods has taken a shine to the 24-year-old and fellow California native. “He’s fantastic to play with,â€ Woods said of DeChambeau. “He’s great. … Two friends going out there competing and playing. We both have jobs to do today and try to shoot as low rounds as we possibly could do today. And he did that.â€ It helps, obviously, that DeChambeau has emerged at one of the game’s top young golfers. His win last week at THE NORTHERN TRUST was the third of his PGA TOUR career and made him just the 11th player in the last 30 years to post three wins before turning 25. Besides taking over the FedExCup lead, he also moved to 12th in the world rankings. “Pretty impressive,â€ Woods said. “And just the way he’s played, especially the last couple of weeks. He’s had opportunities and had runs, but I think he’s cleaning up the rounds. He’s not making that many mistakes. And if he does … I’ve talked to him over the past couple of months, he’s missing the ball in the correct spots. That makes all the difference.â€ Their friendship has grown to the point of open speculation that they will be partners at next month’s Ryder Cup. The fact neither of them are yet on the U.S. team seems to be a moot point. Three of Jim Furyk’s four Captain’s picks will be announced next Tuesday, and expectations are that Woods and DeChambeau will be chosen. “I think if all the stars were to align and that were to happen, I think we could feed off of each other pretty well,â€ said DeChambeau, whose focus the next few weeks remains squarely on the FedExCup race. As for Tiger’s perspective on the pairing? Well, Sunday’s 63 at TPC Boston was a pretty strong statement. “If he goes around and shoots 8 under par every time,â€ Tiger said, “that will work.â€

Sleeper Picks: Sony Open in HawaiiSleeper Picks: Sony Open in Hawaii

Greyson Sigg (+300 for a Top 20) … While nothing ever is guaranteed, it’s still not too surprising when a PGA TOUR sophomore with pedigree figures it out. His rookie season of 2021-22 was solid but unspectacular, but the 27-year-old already has made quick work of this season with a trio of top 15s among six paydays in as many starts. It includes a T15 at Sea Island that can comp to Waialae. Finished T42 in his debut here last year. He was in position to strike for a top 25 or better but got upended by a closing 70. If he turns that lesson into lemonade, then we’ll witness that this week. Oh, and it can’t hurt that his Georgia Bulldogs just defended their national title on the gridiron on Monday night. Andrew Putnam (+175 for a Top 20) … As a former runner-up at Waialae (2019), he already was in our crosshairs, but it’s his only top 25 in six attempts. That speaks to what can happen in a shootout no matter the level of comfort. So, his experience and one-time podium finish serve as supportive evidence to continue to elevate expectations for the 33-year-old. After trotting through the tape of the 2021-22 season, he’s opened the new campaign 8-for-8 with a T2 at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP punctuating three top 25s. Robby Shelton (+350 for a Top 20) … The 27-year-old went to work in the fall and already has proven that he won’t squander his return to the PGA TOUR. With a T10 at The RSM Classic to highlight four top 25s contributing to his 6-for-7 record, he’s 45th in FedExCup points on arrival for his third appearance at Waialae. Finished T25 with four steady red numbers in his last trip in 2021. The last time he appeared as a Sleeper, he placed T15 at the Shriners three months ago. Kramer Hickok (+800 for a Top 20) … Yes, he’s in a slump, so, yes, this is an aggressive send, but it’s all about the fit over form. It’s one of those opportunities to trust in the professional athlete to overcome what, on paper, screams for us to run in the other direction, or at least abstain. Since 2020, he’s 3-for-3 at Waialae with a T19 in 2021 and a T20 last year. All nine of his most recent loops of the course are in the 60s. Another driver of the nod is that he’s had a break to reflect and reset without giving away any positioning in the FedExCup standings. Kazuki Higa … There’s no argument that all competition is relative, but when we’re exploring potentially hidden value, he’s a fantastic find. Fresh off a four-win season on his native Japan Golf Tour where he ran away with the money title. His most recent victory was by three strokes at the prestigious Dunlop Phoenix in mid-November that included notables such as Mito Pereira (2nd), Tom Kim (T4) and Corey Conners (T11). At 67th in the Official World Golf Ranking, Higa is the only Japanese talent inside the top 100 other than Sony Open in Hawaii defending champion Hideki Matsuyama (21st). Oh, and he’s also on the bounce after receiving an invitation to compete in his first Masters this year. Odds were sourced on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023. For live odds, visit BetMGM.
