After going 3-0-1 at the Presidents Cup at Liberty National, 42-time PGA TOUR winner Phil Mickelson returns to wine country and the Silverado Resort and Spa after a T8 finish there a year ago. Mickelson headlines a field that also includes first-timer Zach Johnson and recent TOUR Championship contenders Tony Finau, Adam Hadwin and Webb Simpson. Others in the field at the 7,166-yard, par-72 North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa include Emiliano Grillo, the Safeway champion two years ago who is coming off his Presidents Cup debut at Liberty National; Kevin Na; Ryan Moore; Sangmoon Bae; and Sam Saunders. Arnold Palmer’s grandson, Saunders shot a 59 in the Web.com Tour Championship last week, while two-time TOUR winner Bae is coming off his mandatory two-year hitch in the South Korean military. Silverado was the estate of a Civil War general and later a U.S. Senator before Robert Trent Jones, Jr., built two courses there in the 1960s. It was the home of the old Kaiser International on the PGA TOUR for 13 years starting in 1968, and hosted The Transamerica on the PGA TOUR Champions from 1989-2002. Johnny Miller bought the resort in 2010 and made upgrades to both courses. The winner gets 500 FedExCup points. Jonas Blixt, Sangmoon Bae and Emiliano Grillo: This trio of global up-and-comers and past Safeway Open champions includes three-time TOUR winner Blixt, 33, a Swede who won the tournament in 2012 (and with Cameron Smith captured the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last season); Bae, the 2015 champion, who is returning from military service in South Korea; and Argentina’s Grillo, the 2016 champ, who like Mickelson played in the Presidents Cup at Liberty last week. Tee times: 3:30 p.m. ET off No. 1 on Thursday and 10:40 a.m. ET off 10 on Friday.   Phil Mickelson, Webb Simpson and Bryson DeChambeau: Mickelson, 47, is still seeking his first TOUR win since 2013, but things are looking up: He looked as vital as ever as he went 3-0-1 at the Presidents Cup at Liberty National. Simpson didn’t win last season, either, but was consistent as he finished 17th in the FedExCup standings. DeChambeau is coming off a wild summer in which he won the John Deere Classic and jetted off to The Open Championship as a result. Tee times: 3:40 p.m. ET off No. 1 on Thursday and 10:50 a.m. ET off No. 10 on Friday.   Cody Gribble, Mackenzie Hughes and Chris Stroud: Three first-time winners from 2016-17 PGA TOUR season, one of whom, Canada’s Hughes, came within a whisker of making captain Nick Price’s International Team at the Presidents Cup. Stroud, 35, had a summer in which he broke through at the Barracuda Championship and then added a T9 at the PGA Championship. (The Houstonian has lately been throwing himself into Hurricane Harvey relief.) Gribble, 27, looks to get back to the player who won the Sanderson Farms Championship. Tee times: 10:40 a.m. ET off No. 10 on Thursday and 3:30 p.m. ET off No. 1 on Friday.   Brendan Steele, Chesson Hadley and Zach Johnson: Defending champion Steele parlayed his early win last season into a deep run in the FedExCup Playoffs, getting all the way to the BMW Championship. Meanwhile, Web.com Tour Regular Season/Finals money-leader Chesson Hadley is coming off a victory at the Albertsons Boise Open and looking to make a splash in his return to the PGA TOUR, while two-time major winner Zach Johnson will be making his much-anticipated debut at Silverado North. Tee times: 10:50 a.m. ET off No. 10 on Thursday and 3:40 p.m. ET off No. 1 on Friday.

Quick look at the Shriners Hospitals for Children OpenQuick look at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

The fourth week of the new PGA TOUR season brings us the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at 7,225-yard, par-71 TPC Summerlin, where Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion. World No. 1 Brooks Koepka, a seven-time TOUR winner, will begin his season as he and his fellow 20-somethings look to continue their run of three straight tournament titles. Sebastian Muñoz (Sanderson Farms Championship), Cameron Champ (Safeway Open) and Joaquin Niemann (A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier) make up the top three in the FedExCup, respectively, and the oldest among them is Muñoz, 26. (Koepka is 29.) THREE PLAYERS TO PONDER THE FLYOVER The 341-yard, par-4 15th hole is one of the most exciting on the course, as the longer hitters can drive the elevated green, which is long, narrow and surrounded by bunkers. Desert runs down the entire left side of the hole, but it’s mostly defenseless otherwise. Players averaged 3.585 strokes there last year, racking eight eagles and 191 birdies compared to just 30 bogeys and three double-bogeys. The hole begins a stretch of the four best viewing holes at TPC Summerlin.    LANDING ZONE The 444-yard, par-4 18th hole is no pushover, especially not with the nerves that go along with trying to win. It’s long and slightly uphill, demanding a forced carry over a wash off the tee. The green is deep but protected by a lake to the left that has seen its share of golf balls. Players made 16 double-bogeys at the finishing hole last year to go along with three dreaded “others and 43 bogeys. There were also 77 birdies. WEATHER CHECK From meteorologist Kyle Koval: “A quiet week of weather is likely for Las Vegas with no notable weather systems tracking anywhere near the region. Temperatures will gradually warm from the lower 80s Wednesday to near 90 degrees this weekend. Thursday and Friday have the best potential for any elevated winds with gusts over 15 mph possible. Winds look rather light for the weekend. For the latest weather news from TPC Summerlin, check out PGATOUR.COM’s Weather Hub. SOUND CHECK At some point I just have to kind of give it a try. BY THE NUMBERS 1 – Number of players to win the Shriners in title defense. Jim Furyk won in 1995, ’98 and ’99. 7 – Largest come-from-behind victory, by Smylie Kaufman in 2015. 17 – Shriners aces since 2000, most recently by Chris Stroud and Joaquin Niemann last year. 102 – Bunkers on the course. SCATTERSHOTS DeLaet cautiously optimistic for comeback: Graham DeLaet, 37, still has the beard, but while he looks like the same guy, he’s coming off a nearly two-year injury layoff after a stem-cell injection and a second microdiscectomy on his back. His comeback plans have changed a few times, but he’ll give it a go at the Shriners. “You never know until you’re out here, he told the Toronto Sun. “I’ve shot some good rounds at home with the boys, but it’s different out here and so I’m interested to see what happens, in all honesty. DeLaet was a member of the 2013 International Presidents Cup and represented Canada at the Olympics in 2016, but that was the last year in which he played a full season on TOUR. He’s playing on a major-medical exemption.  Hadwin eyes Presidents Cup pick: Adam Hadwin hasn’t given up on a Presidents Cup pick from International Captain Ernie Els. “Once the points were done and the team was set, I feel like it was an open ballgame, Hadwin said at the Safeway Open, where his solo second was his best result since winning the 2017 Valspar Championship. “Obviously, he’s going to take into consideration your year and stuff like that, but I doubt that he’s afraid to go with the hot player, either. I believe that I’m a proven competitor, I’ve been there before. I know what to expect, I’ve played well in big situations. I certainly have some work to do to go out and prove myself before he’ll choose.   Mickelson, Scott drop in: Phil Mickelson, whose Safeway start was marred by a quadruple-bogey 9 in the first round that led to a missed cut, will make his 13th start at the Shriners but first since 2005. The 49-year-old recently dropped 25-30 pounds and is playing more than usual this fall in hopes of getting a pick from U.S. Presidents Cup Captain Tiger Woods. Mickelson, a 44-time TOUR winner, has played on every U.S. Team, 12 in total, since 1994. Other potential American captain’s picks in Vegas include Tony Finau, Gary Woodland, Charles Howell III and Brandt Snedeker. Adam Scott, meanwhile, is making his tournament debut despite having attended UNLV in 1999-2000.

Louis Oosthuizen goes low to lead The Open Championship after 36 holesLouis Oosthuizen goes low to lead The Open Championship after 36 holes

SANDWICH, England — Louis Oosthuizen set a 36-hole record at The 149th Open and is halfway to ending that run of near misses at the majors. He’ll have to hold off a cast of major champions on the weekend at Royal St. George’s. RELATED: Full leaderboard | Morikawa makes waves on Friday On a day of pleasant summer weather that took the fear out of the links off Sandwich Bay, Oosthuizen broke away from a three-way tie with a birdie-birdie-eagle run from the 12th hole. He shrugged off his first bogey of the week for a 5-under 65 and a two-stroke lead on Friday. Former PGA champion Collin Morikawa had a 64 and was two shots behind. Another shot was Jordan Spieth (67), going after his fourth major. Lurking was two-time major champion Dustin Johnson, the No. 1 player in the world who shot 65. Oosthuizen was at 11-under 129, breaking the 36-hole Open record first set by Nick Faldo in 1992 at Muirfield and matched by Brandt Snedeker in 2012 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. This will be the fifth time in the last nine rounds at a major that Oosthuizen, the 2010 Open champion at St. Andrews, has had at least a share of the lead. He was runner-up at the last two majors, to Phil Mickelson at the the PGA Championship in May and to Jon Rahm the U.S. Open last month. “I’m not really going to think about the second spots,” said Oosthuizen, when asked what he’ll do differently this time. “I know my game is in a good place.” He’ll also be aware of the quality of player behind him, though. Morikawa, making quite a debut in links golf, made seven birdies in his first 14 holes as part of a clinic in iron play. He missed a 5-foot par putt on No. 15 and had a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole catch the lip. Spieth, four shots behind when he teed off, was tied for the lead after 12 holes and then played the last six holes in 1 over. Then there was Dustin Johnson, a runner-up at Royal St. George’s in 2011, who stuck his approach at the last to 3 feet for a birdie and a round of 65, which left him tied for fourth place at 7 under with Dylan Frittelli of South Africa (67) and Scottie Scheffler (66). One shot behind an eclectic mix of players at 6 under — including two more South Africans in Justin Harding and Daniel Van Tonder — were Rahm (64) and Brooks Koepka. Koepka made four birdies in his last five holes for a 66. DeChambeau just made it to the weekend at Royal St. George’s by shooting a 70, which saw him make the cut on the number at 1 over. Rory McIlroy did, too, needing a birdie on the final hole for another 70. He was 11 shots behind. Other big names weren’t so lucky: No. 7 Patrick Cantlay, No. 9 Patrick Reed, former Open champions Francesco Molinari and Henrik Stenson, and Darren Clarke, the 2011 champion at Royal St. George’s, were all headed home.
