Fantasy Insider: Wells Fargo Championship

For PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO gamers, it’s wise to approach the next two weeks as one swing thought. The Wells Fargo Championship back at Quail Hollow presents the opportunity to invest in chalk who hit the ball a long way. Next week THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass gives us a rare reprieve from that angle in an event in which most of the world’s best are scheduled to compete. This is because, other than maybe Sergio Garcia, there are no horses on the Pete Dye design. And because of that fact, the objective will be simply to get four into the weekend. Treat any bonus points you collect as exactly that. Looking ahead only to next week now, the Power Rankings for THE PLAYERS will mimic what I wrote for the Masters. Every golfer in the field will be included in some capacity. This means that all Sleepers will appear in the Power Rankings, thus putting that stand-alone staple on hiatus until the AT&T Byron Nelson the following week. The FI will be abridged just as it was for the Masters. This will be the construct for the remaining three majors as well. PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO My roster for the Wells Fargo Championship (in alphabetical order): Jason Day Tony Finau Rickie Fowler Rory McIlroy Phil Mickelson Justin Thomas You’ll find my starters in Expert Picks. Others to consider for each category (in alphabetical order): Scoring: Bryson DeChambeau; Tommy Fleetwood; Chesson Hadley; Kevin Kisner; Luke List; Grayson Murray; Alex Noren; Patrick Reed; Tiger Woods Driving: Byeong Hun An; Bryson DeChambeau; Tommy Fleetwood; Emiliano Grillo; Alex Noren; Louis Oosthuizen; Kyle Stanley; Kevin Streelman Approach: Emiliano Grillo; Chesson Hadley; Brian Harman; Andrew Landry; Louis Oosthuizen; Webb Simpson; Kevin Streelman Short: Emiliano Grillo; Chesson Hadley; Brian Harman; Kevin Kisner; Alex Noren; Webb Simpson Power Rankings Wild Card Hideki Matsuyama … This has nothing to do with his fit and everything to do with his fitness. He’s still clawing back into form after suffering discomfort in his left wrist and pad of his thumb in his two-time title defense of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Give him this week to perform alone, and then revisit as a cornerstone in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO for THE PLAYERS. If his previous seasons are any indications, he won’t play much in Segment 3. Draws Brian Harman … He’s the tournament’s defending champion, but PGA champion Justin Thomas truly is the only golfer who has prevailed on Quail Hollow as the field sees it this week. Harman won at pinch-hitting Eagle Point in downstate Wilmington, North Carolina, but he’s been nails everywhere, including at Quail Hollow where he placed T13 in the PGA three months post-victory. With video game-like numbers to support the 31-year-old, it’s merely a coincidence that he’s the defending champion. Tiger Woods … Getting his first look at Quail Hollow since 2012 and there are parts that he won’t recognize. Furthermore, as one who has dominated tracks on which length and par are at a premium, there’s reason to put that reputation up against his evolving profile of today. Contrast that against his co-runner-up finish in what was his debut at similarly challenging Copperhead in March and there’s reason to continue to believe that it doesn’t matter where he plays because he’ll be a factor just as he’s always been. Andrew Landry … It was amusing that I had the right idea about slapping the Sleeper tag on him for the RBC Heritage (where he placed T42), only to watch him to take down the Valero Texas Open the following week. There’s a lesson in there about being more patient, but there’s also proof that the Nappy Factor is alive and well. That performance at TPC San Antonio itself was a reminder that he plays tough courses well. As a result, DFSers should give him a look at Quail Hollow even though he’s a debutant. Alex Noren … His only weakness is relative inexperience at Quail Hollow, but he’s one of the 65 in this week’s field who were here for the PGA Championship last August. So, brush that aside as a non-factor. Checking all of the boxes statistically in his first spin with a PGA TOUR card. Already has three podium finishes in 2018, too. Gary Woodland … Quail Hollow sets up as the kind of test where golfers should not expect to find their games, but it projects to be a slump-buster for this guy. He’s just 3-for-7 since the playoff victory at TPC Scottsdale three months ago, but he struts onto this week’s course with a 7-for-7 slate that includes top 25s in his last four appearances, including a T22 at the PGA Championship. Joaquin Niemann … Closed like a boss at TPC San Antonio with a pair of 67s on the weekend to finish sixth. Even better, he ranked eighth in distance of all drives, which was the initial (mild) concern in his professional debut. Real deal. Bryson DeChambeau (all) Lucas Glover (all) Emiliano Grillo (SERVPRO) Luke List (all) Sean O’Hair (DFS) Xander Schauffele (all) Ollie Schniederjans (DFS) Fades Brooks Koepka … As easily as it is to dismiss the missed cut (with Marc Turnesa) in New Orleans and attach to his confidence back inside the ropes, there’s no reason to rush it. My duty as a conservative analyst is to give him the space to prove that the rust is gone. Jason Dufner … It seems like cherry-picking, but stay with me. He’s gone five straight stroke-play starts of individual competition without a top-50 finish. While experience at Quail Hollow has value, he didn’t impress with a T58 at the 2017 PGA Championship, which was his first visit since missing the cut in 2010. Adam Scott … Continues to struggle mightily with his putting. That has dampened otherwise solid performances tee to green. Because the latter should keep him afloat at Quail Hollow, he’s a contrarian investment at best, but the glimmers for more than making the cut are barely visible. Daniel Berger … Like many tweeners, this is relative. He hasn’t been scuffling, but he’s really not impressing, either. Bottom line, the flat trajectory is a reflection of the common reality of the challenge of putting four rounds together. So, he won’t hurt you, but the depth in this field furnishes other options who are more tantalizing at the moment. Martin Kaymer … If his right wrist isn’t giving him any problems, it’s not realized in his results. Since returning to action in Houston, he’s 2-for-4 without a top-45 finish. Sat out the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow due to an injured left shoulder. Bud Cauley Ross Fisher Dylan Frittelli Bill Haas Tyrrell Hatton Beau Hossler Chris Paisley Charl Schwartzel Peter Uihlein Returning to Competition Francesco Molinari … Rested the last two weeks due to discomfort in a shoulder. Currently 117th in the FedExCup standings without a top-15 finish on U.S. soil since … a co-runner-up at the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. We can’t expect the same result, but DFSers should reattach as usual and compete against other DFSers who are concerned about the injury. Adam Hadwin … Back at it after withdrawing from his commitment to the RBC Heritage to attend to a personal matter. He’s been dynamite for most of 2018 with six top 25s, including in each of his last five starts. While labeled as a great putter, his tee-to-green precision is carrying the load this season. Opting to connect that with a track like Quail Hollow is shrewd. Get him back in to your lineup. Notable WDs Camilo Villegas … Still nursing a sore right shoulder. It’s forced him to withdraw after his last three commitments. He’s 171st in FedExCup points. Sangmoon Bae … The 31-year-old hasn’t been the same since resuming his career after honoring his military obligation in South Korea. He’s logged only one top-60 finish among just three cuts made in 13 starts this season. John Senden … Just 1-for-2 with a solo 79th/MDF at Valero in his return. Has 11 starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension. The Upshot: D. Johnson solid in returnThe Upshot: D. Johnson solid in return

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Notes and observations from Thursday’s first round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Eagle Point Golf Club, where Italy’s Francesco Molinari chipped in on the 18th hole for a 6-under 66 and a one-shot lead over Sweden’s Alex Noren among the early finishers. DJ PLEASED WITH OPENING ROUND Dustin Johnson hasn’t played much golf lately, but the rust didn’t show as he made four birdies and signed for a 2-under 70. That tied him with 53-year-old playing partner Davis Love III, and gave Johnson a solid start as he tries to play his way back into the winner’s circle for the fourth time in his last four starts.    “I’m happy with the way I played,” Johnson said. “I didn’t score that great, didn’t really hole that many putts, but other than that, yeah, I played really well.” Johnson got right back to his usual game Thursday. He averaged 312.7 yards off the tee, and hit 8 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens. (He leads the TOUR in both driving distance and greens in regulation.) The only thing that hampered his play: He took 32 putts. All in all, he said, it was a good day, especially considering this was his first competitive round since he closed out Jon Rahm to win the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play on March 26. “I thought I drove it nicely,” Johnson said, “Hit a lot of good iron shots. You know, I’m happy with the way I played, for sure.” The long break wasn’t part of the plan, of course. Johnson went to Augusta National for the Masters four weeks ago, but pulled out at the 11th hour with a lower back injury suffered while falling down a short flight of stairs in his rental house. In a way, Johnson said after his opening-round 70 at Eagle Point, it felt like nothing had changed since before the injury. He said he feels 100 percent physically, and the statistics backed him up: His longest measured drive in Round 1 was an impressive 340 yards. Johnson’s win streak goes all the way back to the Genesis Open in Los Angeles in February. Should he prevail at the Wells Fargo for his fourth straight victory it would mark the longest winning streak on TOUR since Tiger Woods won five straight tournaments in 2007-2008. “All in all,” Johnson said, “I’m very pleased with the day.” MOLINARI HEATS UP WITH PUTTER Francesco Molinari was having qualified success this season already, what with a T7 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard, a T33 at the Masters, and a T22 finish at the RBC Heritage. But something was holding him back: putting. That changed in the first round of the Wells Fargo, as Molinari chipped in twice and needed just 25 putts on his way to a 66 for the first-round lead. “Yeah, I had lots of good rounds this year,” said Molinari, who is ranked 69th in strokes gained: putting. “I think I had something like eight top 25s in 11 tournaments, so I’ve been playing really well. Obviously today I made a few more putts than maybe the last couple of months, which is always nice. … I worked on the putting a lot the last couple weeks and it paid off today.” Molinari said he took pleasure in not just seeing the ball go in the hole Thursday, but also in his older brother Edoardo picking up his third European Tour victory last month. “He’s had a pretty tough time the last few seasons,” Francesco said. WILLY WILCOX ‘TRYING TO FIND THE GAME’ Amid the players’ rush to familiarize themselves with Eagle Point, Willy Wilcox was so far down the alternate list to get into the Wells Fargo he didn’t play any practice rounds. He walked the back nine Wednesday, leaving his caddie Kevin Ensor to tour all 18. But that was it. Still, in his first time seeing Eagle Point with a club in his hands, Wilcox shot 3 under on the front nine Thursday morning, briefly sharing the lead. The 30-year-old with the unconventional swing dropped two shots on the back nine and signed for a 1-under 71. “Just trying to find the game,” said Wilcox, who is coming off his best result this season, a T14 with partner Freddie Jacobson at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. “It’s nice to see some good stuff. It was nice to birdie the last. It got a little squirrely on the back so we’ll go to the range and figure it out. We got a great draw with the weather.” Most fans know Wilcox for his ace at THE PLAYERS Championship last year, which was the first at the island 17th hole since 2002. He is not qualified to return to TPC Sawgrass next week, but remains grateful for the moment. He got messages from all around the world, all of which obscured the fact that he didn’t have a great season, missing 11 cuts and finishing 138th in the FedExCup standings. In December, he decided to shake things up. He was kicking back and having a few beers with his agent when he decided to change his name from Will to Willy, since everybody calls him that, anyway. “I wish I was going back,” Wilcox said of THE PLAYERS. “I mean, I guess I still kind of have a chance. It’s amazing how many people know about it. I got emails and Facebook messages, Twitter messages, my family was there. It was as cool as it could possibly get. Everybody back home was really excited. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, you had a bad year.’ People were like, ‘You had a hole-in-one! Dude, you should just retire now!’” He’s not about to retire, Wilcox added with a laugh. For one thing, the former University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazer — his mom Kim is the women’s golf coach — still has three more rounds to go at the Wells Fargo. His 71 puts him five behind the leader Molinari, which means a return trip to THE PLAYERS, while still a longshot, is still within reach.

David Duval and Jim Furyk turn back the clockDavid Duval and Jim Furyk turn back the clock

AVONDALE, La. – Jim Furyk and David Duval said they’d be the rustiest team at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, but the veterans put on a vintage display to fire a 7-under 65 at TPC Louisiana on Thursday. In Four-ball play, the duo negotiated their way through an early downpour and then turned back the clock to put themselves high on the leaderboard. At one point they actually had the lead, perhaps to their surprise, but ended the morning wave inside the top 10 teams. “We hung in there. Wasn’t necessarily the prettiest, but it was solid. Wasn’t like we had 36 looks at birdies; there was a few up and downs; a few good saves; and a couple good birdie putts,â€ Duval said. “It was solid, but it wasn’t entirely like smoke and mirrors. It was pretty solid.â€ Duval – the 13-time PGA TOUR winner and former World No. 1 who these days spends his time as a Golf Channel analyst – found some of his old magic with four of the team’s seven birdies. The 46-year-old started to tire late, but this wasn’t a surprise as he’s played just seven TOUR events in the last three seasons, missing the cut in all of them. Earlier this season he missed the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am but this time around he was able to get some serious preparation in. “Fortunately, with my work schedule I’ve had the last couple weeks off since the Masters. I actually went down, took my clubs — which I’ve never traveled with clubs — took them to the Masters and practiced down there when I had the opportunity,â€ he explained. “Then I had a couple weeks at home, of which a good eight or nine of those days cooperated weather-wise. Then I met up with my old coach as well, talked with him and met up with him down here on Monday.â€ Duval was thankful for the format change that saw the tournament open up with Four-ball rather than Foursomes. While well placed after the opening round, Friday’s alternate shot format will be a different beast all together. “The alternate shot is certainly a more nerve-racking format,â€ Duval said. “And add to it that you’re playing it for a score, not just matches, match play per hole.â€ Furyk is in the midst of a comeback of sorts of his own, the 47-year-old is in just his seventh start this season after shoulder issues last year. “I’m glad we kind of got settled today, put up a decent score. I think the key tomorrow is — our whole thought process coming in here, is we want to have fun. It’s two buddies getting back together, playing golf,â€ Furyk said. “We have to keep that same attitude tomorrow. We’re here to have a good time and have fun. If we can do that, we may put up a decent score.â€
