Fantasy Insider: CIMB Classic

If you play PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO, only the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open will utilize ShotLink between now and the holiday break that doubles as the endpoint of Segment 1. Furthermore, since all three of the TOUR stops in Asia this month guarantee four rounds for everyone who commits, our objective is as simple as it gets all season: Go all-in on golfers you think will finish highest on the final leaderboard. If you’re new to the format, in tournaments that do not use ShotLink, bonus points awarded are equal to one-half FedExCup points earned by your starters in the final round. The winner of this week’s CIMB Classic will yielded 250 bonus points. Meanwhile, he may total as many as 100 fantasy points, give or take, for actual scoring in all four rounds. So, if you’re keen to review my “others to consider” in the Scoring category below, consume them with a grain of salt as those are specific to actual scoring and not leaderboard finish like the Power Rankings. One other reminder about the CIMB, because it’s contested in Malaysia, it’s scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday. That’s 5:00 p.m. on the West Coast and 2:00 p.m. in Hawaii. Set an alert and thank me later. The first season of PGA TOUR Champions One & Done concludes with this week’s SAS Championship. I’ve had a blast competing with the other experts in that stand-alone game and I’m already gearing up for a renewal in 2018. As always, I’ll include notes on several notables in Wednesday’s One & Done column. PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO My roster for the CIMB Classic (in alphabetical order): Rafa Cabrera Bello Paul Casey Hideki Matsuyama Kevin Na Brendan Steele Justin Thomas You’ll find my starters in Expert Picks. Others to consider for each category (in alphabetical order): Scoring: Anirban Lahiri; Scott Piercy; Xander Schauffele; Charl Schwartzel; Cameron Smith Driving: n/a Approach: n/a Short: n/a Power Rankings Wild Card Bud Cauley … Silverado catered to his tee-to-green strength and he capitalized with a T7, but it was expected. This week’s angle could expose his weakness on the greens and in his debut in the CIMB Classic. He’s a streaky putter at best. With no cut and a plethora of alternatives on the board, consider taking a pass on the 27-year-old. Draws Graham DeLaet … This is a checkpoint to determine where he is long range. Still a non-winner and not getting younger at age 35, he’s nonetheless springing off his best season with a putter. In fact, because he put it all together in 2016-17, newer fans of the sport wouldn’t associate his reputation as a surgeon tee to green. However, if he wasn’t coming off a T5 at Silverado where you’d expect him to shine, he wouldn’t have received this endorsement. A T7 in his debut at TPC Kuala Lumpur in 2013 proved that he’s comfortable on the putting surfaces, but it’s his body of work recently that deserves our confidence. Adam Hadwin … A limited-field, no-cut event on a course that rewards putting? Heck, yeah! Ignore his sputtering form and invest in what you know. The bonus is that he’s already familiar with TPC Kuala Lumpur after placing T21 last year. Emiliano Grillo (all) Scott Hend (DFS) Anirban Lahiri (DFS) Fades Jason Dufner … Given he’s survived eight consecutive cuts, the last two guarantees for advancing to the TOUR Championship, he doesn’t need a tune-up. Yet, that’s what this week presents the 40-year-old. He’ll break his goose egg in FedExCup points, but gamers’ expectations should be tempered since he’s not a short-lister in putting contests (even though he prevailed at the 2016 CareerBuilder Challenge). Also still chasing his first top 25 in what is now his third appearance at TPC Kuala Lumpur. Branden Grace … From the Presidents Cup to the Dunhill Links and now to the CIMB Classic, his stamina will be tested. As we know, touring professionals from South Africa endure the worst of the travel challenges, and there are examples to prove that we shouldn’t be concerned, but the 29-year-old is best reserved for limited-use contrarian plays in DFS. Kyle Stanley … TPC Kuala Lumpur sets up like a photo negative to Silverado where his ball-striking would have mattered more. (He didn’t play, though.) Instead, his skill set is neutralized in Malaysia by the premium to putt the lights out. Not surprisingly, even before he reconnected with his career arc in 2016-17, he performed inconsistently here with three rounds of 73 or worse sprinkled amid five red numbers. Wesley Bryan Russell Knox Jamie Lovemark Pat Perez Jhonattan Vegas Returning to Competition Danny Lee … When he walked off Conway Farms during his opening round of the BMW Championship with discomfort in his lower back, it effectively ended his Playoffs, but it also extended his drought to 0-for-5 since the PGA Championship. Andrew Johnston … Just some housekeeping here because he’s no longer a PGA TOUR member after finishing 189th in the FedExCup standings. He’s scheduled to compete in the Italian Open. It’s his first commitment since withdrawing during the PGA Championship two months ago with a sore shoulder. Are equipment changes in store for Day, Rahm? Are equipment changes in store for Day, Rahm?

It’s holiday card season, and for many families that means gathering around the fireplace, Christmas tree — or anywhere you can find good lighting to dress alike, share some laughs and snap a couple of pictures to help spread holiday cheer. For TaylorMade Golf, the Carlsbad-based company has a lot to be cheerful about, especially considering their staffers claimed two of the three major championships this year thanks to Collin Morikawa's win at the PGA Championship at Harding Park and Dustin Johnson's record-setting victory at Augusta National on the heels of his dominant run to his first FedExCup. TaylorMade's Christmas card made headlines last year because it gave us the opportunity to see Tiger Woods in a onesie. This year, the big news was who WASN'T featured on the card. The big news of Tommy Fleetwood signing with TaylorMade was announced Monday. He was included on the holiday card that was posted to social media on Tuesday. Jason Day and Jon Rahm were noticeably absent from the lineup, however. This is an interesting development since both Day and Rahm have been TaylorMade staff players for their entire careers with Jason having one of the longest tenures going back to when he turned pro in 2006. TaylorMade was without comment on the changes. So where will Day and Rahm land in 2021? Day, who last won in 2018, is likely going to go the free-agent route like many players have in the last few years. For Rahm, reaching No. 1 in the world brought with it a lot of opportunities, and it is likely he was made an offer he couldn’t refuse to join another OEM staff and become a prominent player. Wherever each player ends up equipment-wise, we will find out as the calendar page turns, but for now, we can enjoy the smiles of Johnson, Morikawa, Woods, Fleetwood, Rory McIlroy and Matthew Wolff on TaylorMade's holiday card.

Ultra-custom TaylorMade putters made for Koepka, Matsuyama, Rose, DeChambeau, Day, RahmUltra-custom TaylorMade putters made for Koepka, Matsuyama, Rose, DeChambeau, Day, Rahm

AUSTIN, Texas — With the aim to get new TaylorMade putters in the hands of the top PGA TOUR players for the Masters, TaylorMade’s Director of Global Tours Chris Trott says he’s been eyeing the 2019 World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play in Austin, Texas, to intrigue players with new designs. Trott says he’s been working for at least eight weeks going back-and-forth on new custom putters with Kia Ma and team, and some of the PGA TOUR players in question. “It takes me a few weeks, hence why it’s been a long process that started weeks and weeks ago,â€ Trott said. “I knew this week is where I was aiming, and I had to make it possible to get to here.â€ PGATOUR.com spotted new custom designs for many PGA TOUR players – some already using older versions of TaylorMade putters, and some using putters from other companies – including Jason Day, Justin Rose, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Hideki Matsuyama and Brooks Koepka. Photos of the custom putters are below, with brief explanations thanks to Trott himself. Hideki Matsuyama and Brooks Koepka Most recently, Matsuyama – who changes putters often — played a custom TaylorMade putter with an aluminum insert, while Brooks Koepka has been using the same custom Scotty Cameron T10 Select Newport putter for quite some time. Trott says the TP putters made this week for Matsuayma and Koepka were made “in the same batchâ€ as Tiger Woods’ custom TP Juno putter from 2018, although Matsuyama’s and Koepka’s putters have less face height and were made using a different mold. Matsuyama prefers a louder “clickâ€ at impact than the aluminum face of the previous TaylorMade putter he was using, so Trott built these custom TP putters with steel inserts that have plates behind them for a louder noise. While the custom Juno putters have “perfectâ€ swing weights, the custom Mullen mallets are a bit heavy, according to Trott. He says, “I don’t have time to get more of them milled up and machined. I’m just going with it. So we’ll figure it out.â€ Koepka, on the other hand, had not seen his custom TP Juno putter as of Monday morning at the Match Play. We’ll update this story with more information as it becomes available. Bryson DeChambeau Dechambeau has been using a SIK armlock prototype putter for quite some time, but Trott is going to take a shot at getting a TaylorMade Spider prototype into his bag. Trott says that the custom putter made for Dechambeau is “a complete shot in the dark.â€ Trott continues, “He hasn’t seen it, he hasn’t asked for it. I’m just waiting for the right time to get in there.â€ The putter is made with added loft and is equipped with an Armlock-style SuperStroke Flatso 17 grip. Jon Rahm and Jason Day Rahm and Day are each using the older TaylorMade Tour Red Spider putters. These new custom putters are Spider Tour prototypes that are made all-copper, without the white line down the center as with the retail Spider X versions. They have “five-millâ€ inserts, rather than “three-millâ€ inserts, according to Trott. Justin Rose Rose has been using a custom Axis1 putter equipped with a Lamkin Flat Cat grip. Recently, however, someone from Rose’s camp got in touch with Trott via Instagram requesting a custom TaylorMade Spider. Trott made at least two putters for Rose, including one that has a backstryke-style hosel. It’s also equipped with Rose’s gamer grip. Dustin Johnson “And then there are obviously about 165 Dustin Johnson putters,â€ Trott said. “And there’s another 125 underneath the truck in a box. I mean, if he doesn’t change putters now … so we’ll see.â€ Trott was exaggerating … kind of. Johnson changes putters often, and tests about 5+ putters weekly during practice rounds. The most notable is a Tour-prototype, sans white line, like the putters made for Day and Rahm. The face insert of Johnson’s is silver, rather than black, however.
