It’s a big week for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where the defending champion, Jon Rahm, comes in hot on the heels of his second PGA TOUR victory at last week’s CareerBuilder Challenge, and seemingly everyone is talking about the 647th ranked player in the world. TEE TIMES: Farmers Insurance Open, Rounds 1 and 2 | Watch PGA TOUR LIVE Tiger Woods will make his first official TOUR start in one year when he tees it up at Torrey on Thursday. The anticipation is high any time he competes, but especially so at Torrey, where he has won the Farmers seven times and has five other top-10 finishes in 16 starts. Add his 2008 U.S. Open win, and his 1991 Junior World victory, both at Torrey, and you begin to see why there are few courses on the planet where Woods feels more comfortable. He’s hardly the only one, though, who circles this week on the schedule. Defending champion Jon Rahm is on a major roll, and Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and Justin Rose give the Farmers four of the top 10 players in the world, and 11 of the top 25. Brandt Snedeker is a two-time winner at the Farmers and shot one of the all-time great rounds in the history of the TOUR in his victory in 2016, beating the field average by 10 strokes. Xander Schauffele, officially awarded Rookie of the Year honors Tuesday, is a San Diego State product who should feel comfortable playing in his hometown tournament. And former No. 1 Jason Day, the 2015 champion at the Farmers, is looking to get back to his winning ways. Players will alternate on the (slightly easier) North Course and the South Course on Thursday and Friday, then switch to the South exclusively on the weekend. PGA TOUR Live will have coverage Thursday and Friday starting at 11:45 a.m. ET, and PGA TOUR Radio and Golf Channel will have coverage all four days. Here’s a look at this week’s Featured Groups (current FedExCup rankings in parentheses). Rickie Fowler (15), Xander Schauffele (36), Patrick Cantlay (9) Fowler tries to keep it going after his impressive victory at the unofficial Hero World Challenge last month. San Diego product Schauffele is coming off a season in which he won twice, including his surprising victory at the TOUR Championship, and should feel right at home at Torrey. And Patrick Cantlay, one of the biggest movers from last season, is already a winner this season after his breakthrough at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. North Course tee time: Thursday, Rd. 1, 12:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m. local) off the 10th tee; South Course tee time: Friday, Rd. 2, 1:30 p.m. off the first tee. Justin Rose (10), Hideki Matsuyama (38), Phil Mickelson (45) Rose is one of the hottest players anywhere after reeling off back-to-back wins in Europe to end last season. Matsuyama aims to rediscover the magic he found at the Presidents Cup (singles win over Justin Thomas) and World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational last season. And Mickelson, another San Diegan, tries to rebound from a missed cut at last week’s CareerBuilder. North Course tee time: Thursday, Rd. 1, 12:40 p.m. off the 10th tee. South Course tee time: Friday, Rd. 2, 1:40 p.m. off the first tee. Jon Rahm (2), Jason Day (76), Brandt Snedeker (167) Easily the hottest player in golf, Rahm, 23, is not only this week’s defending champion, he is coming off a playoff victory at the CareerBuilder Challenge, which vaulted him to second in the FedExCup standings. Day, the 2015 Farmers champion, is trying to get back into the winner’s circle after a sub-standard 2017. And Snedeker is a two-time Farmers champion who is eager to make up for lost time after missing much of last season with a rib injury. South Course tee time: Thursday, Rd. 1, 1:30 p.m. off the first tee; North Course tee time: Friday, Rd. 2, 12:20 p.m. off the 10th tee. Patrick Reed (71), Charley Hoffman (48), Tiger Woods (NA) Reed is coming off a rare winless season, but one in which he and his wife, Justine, welcomed their second child. It surely hasn’t escaped his notice that this is a Ryder Cup year. San Diego product Hoffman knows Torrey Pines well, and just made his first Presidents Cup team at age 40. And Woods, coming off back fusion surgery last April, is making his first official TOUR start since exactly a year ago. HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the pool where he trained a year ago in March, Tommy Hughson had to get creative. He had aspirations of swimming in college, and he had to stay in shape. So, during the week, the high school senior would run and ride bikes to work on his cardiovascular fitness. Then, on Saturdays, Hughson, who has competed at junior nationals since he was in ninth grade, would swim in the river near a friend’s house. One day they saw an alligator about 200 yards in the distance, and they did the only logical thing. “We swam the other way,” Hughson says matter-of-factly. Meanwhile, Julia Kubec and her mother were spending some of their free time in the early stages of the nationwide shutdown last April and May sewing personalized home-made masks and handing them out to medical workers at various facilities on Hilton Head Island. “I’m not the best sewer, but we made them by hand,” Kubec says. If it’s true, as playwright Oscar Wilde once said, that no good deed goes unpunished, though, Kubec’s gesture turned out to be one of them. In October, she tested positive for COVID-19, along with several other members of the Seahawk soccer team at Hilton Head Island High. It was the weekend before Kubec was set to return to in-person classes. “At first I was like really concerned, but I was pretty asymptomatic, so I wasn’t super worried about it,” recalls Kubec, who did lose her sense of taste and smell. “But in my house, like, my family would not even acknowledge me whatsoever. They would leave food like outside my door.” Later this spring, Kubec and Hughson will graduate from high school this spring with GPAs in excess of 5.0, heading to Duke and the University of Chicago, respectively. They are among 11 seniors from Beaufort and Jasper counties who were named Heritage Classic Foundation Scholars earlier this year. All were deeply affected by COVID-19. One of the recipient’s father was in the hospital for 11 days battling acute respiratory distress syndrome, viral pneumonia and sepsis. He survived thanks to a transfusion of convalescent plasma. Another family needed food bank donations after several members tested positive and had to stop working. One recipient worked at a local pharmacy and delivered medications while separated from his mom and sister, who couldn’t get back home from Nevada due to travel restrictions. Ten of those impressive students received four-year awards that ranged from $16,000-20,000 while the 11th was a one-year grant of $3,000. A total of 353 students have been named RBC Scholars and earned grants totaling $4.63 million since the beginning of the program in 1993. The Heritage Classic Foundation Scholars program is funded by members of the Tartan Club, who make a minimum family contribution of $1,000 year, and ticket sales. “It means a lot,” Hughson says. “It really means a lot. And it puts me again in debt to this Island. I’ve grown up here and I’ve gotten so much from this Island. I have so many great memories and yet again, I’m being helped along in my life by something amazing.” Kubec’s reaction was similar. “I feel like it kind of is a way for me, like, all the sacrifices and hard work that I’ve accomplished over the past few years finally feel like they’re being recognized kind of, because there’s just been so much that I’ve had to give up throughout high school in order for like my academics and athletics,” she says. “So. with this, it just finally feels like worth it.” Academic success, leadership and community service – three hallmarks of the RBC Scholar program — go hand in hand for Kubec and Hughson. Kubec was vice president of her freshman and sophomore class and president as a junior. She’s helped organize homecoming activities and food drives and donations for local animal shelters. The last year has been different, though, and milestones like graduation ceremonies and the prom are up in the air. “It’s just been crazy and I’m not like the biggest fan of like surprises, but everything with COVID just feels like new surprises showing up every week,” Kubec says. “It’s been really interesting, like kind of disappointing in some ways, because a lot of the things that we may have been like looking forward to this year, haven’t been able to go on. … “So that’s definitely been upsetting, but I feel like everyone, especially our school has been really good at like adapting to it. And they still like have tried at least to provide us with some of those things, which is positive.” Kubec, who will attend Duke in the fall and likely study economics, has also taken mission trips with her church to work at youth recreation camps in the Honduras and build houses in the Dominican Republic. She calls the experience “life changing. “Just seeing how different, life is in one of those countries and even just like the culture and the way that people interact,” Kupec says. “The communities are so close and everyone is just so like appreciative of everything. Especially when we worked with the children, just seeing how even despite like the language barriers and everything, we were just able to like form these close relationships with them. It was very heartwarming.” Hughson, who will swim for the University of Chicago next year, is president of the Model United Nations and French National Honor Society at Hilton Head Island High. If not for COVID-19, Hughson would be preparing to travel to a conference where students like him roleplay as delegates to the UN. This year it’s on-line. “You pretend to be a country or a representative from that country and you debate and argue and try to solve world issues such as maybe a hunger crisis in a country or a conflict over in another region,” Hughson explains. “So, you have to do it through diplomacy, and you have to make decisions and write the laws and bills. It’s really interesting.” Small wonder, then, that Hughson hopes to work in the State Department. As much as he’s interested in current events, though, the Seahawk swim team captain also loves looking into the past. Hughson has been interested in archeology since he was in preschool – “I’ve always liked old ruins, digging in the dirt and finding old stuff,” he says. His interest is so keen that the local archeological society has given him the opportunity to work on a native American shell ring that turned out to be 3,500 years old. Hughson started small, moving dirt, then screening through it to find artifacts. As he gained experience, he was able to operate some of the machinery like the magnetometer and spectrometer. He calls the opportunity “pretty cool.” “Growing up with the island, you only really know about the beaches and the tourists and all the big hotels,” Hughson says. “So, I didn’t really know we had such a rich history.”

The Hero World Challenge is a limited-field invitational, but it’s more exclusive than that. Only the most recently successful of the highly successful populate the field of 18 at Albany in The Bahamas. Consider that recent Open Championship winners Henrik Stenson (2016) and Jordan Spieth (2017), both of whom also are among the last seven FedExCup champions (Stenson, 2013; Spieth, 2014-15), required sponsor exemptions to participate. The highest level of talent aside for a moment, that the fifth edition of the tournament on New Providence can be contested at all is a blessing. It’s been only three months since Hurricane Dorian ravaged the northern islands of the archipelago. For the first time in the event’s history (early 2000-present), the Hero World Challenge begins on a Wednesday. The 72-hole competition with no cut is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, Dec. 7, so that all golfers headed to next week’s Presidents Cup have an extra day to travel to Australia and acclimate to its time zone. The field at Albany is reserved for the defending champion, the winners of the majors since the last edition, the first 11 available in order of highest position in the Official World Golf Ranking (on Aug. 26) and two sponsor exemptions. As host of the tournament, which is run in conjunction with his foundation, Tiger Woods would have received one of the two exemptions if he didn’t check one of the first three boxes. All 12 members of the U.S. Presidents Cup team qualified, but Dustin Johnson withdrew in favor of additional time to rest and prepare for the trip to Oz. As the next available via the OWGR, Chez Reavie is the last man in at Albany. None of the golfers who are scheduled to represent the Internationals in the Presidents Cup are in The Bahamas, but six are competing in the Emirates Australian Open, which has a traditional Sunday finish. Albany is a par 72 with equal nines, but there are five par 3s and five par 5s. The latter set opens the possibilities for seriously low scoring. Bubba Watson’s 25-under 263 in the inaugural edition on the course in 2015 is the course tournament record and three of the four scoring averages have landed sub-70. Last year’s clip came in at 69.472. Rahm prevailed at 20-under 268. The course was minimally impacted by Hurricane Dorian and other storms this year, so it will play similarly as it has in the past. With no significant changes, the 7,309-yard track will be fun to navigate. What rough exists is trimmed tight, while the omnipresent threat of wind caps Stimpmeter readings on the TifEagle bermudagrass greens at a PGA TOUR-familiar 12 feet. Seasonable daytime highs in the mid-to-upper 70s are forecast. Rain is not expected. The winner of the Hero World Challenge receives $1 million of the $3.5-million prize fund. And while the victory isn’t official on any circuit and the earnings don’t contribute to any money list, all golfers will collect OWGR points.
