Emiliano Grillo holds one-shot lead at Mayakoba Golf Classic presented by UNIFIN

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — Emiliano Grillo steadied himself with a pair of birdies over the last six holes Saturday for a 3-under 68, giving the Argentine a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic presented by UNIFIN RELATED: Leaderboard | Bhatia proving he belongs Tom Hoge, without a win in his PGA TOUR career, birdied four of the last five holes at El Camaleon Golf Club for a 65 to get within one shot of the lead. After two days of rain, the course was soft and susceptible to low scores and quick movements, and there were plenty of both. Players were allowed to clean and place their golf balls in the fairway. Adam Long ran off seven birdies on his opening nine holes before he slowed and had to settle for a 63. Justin Thomas, who started on the back nine, played bogey-free for a 62 to get back in the mix. He was four shots behind. Tony Finau also got in on the action, but only briefly. Finau made a hole-in-one on the 103-yard fourth hole with a gap wedge. He followed with three more birdies on the front nine and got within one shot of Grillo at one point. But he was wild with the driver, and it finally caught up with him. Finau bogeyed the 11th and 12th, and he failed to make birdie on the par-5 13th with an iron for his second shot. He had no birdies on the back nine, dropped another shot on the 18th and wound up with a 69, leaving him five shots behind. Grillo was at 16-under 197. His only victory was in the season-opening Safeway Open in 2015 in his debut as a PGA TOUR rookie. He rallied that day at Silverado. Sunday will be the first time he takes a lead into the final round on the PGA TOUR, but he should get some confidence from being at Mayakoba. This was his 19th round at El Cameleon, all of them under par. "Started in the lead, finished in the lead, that’s kind of the idea," Grillo said. "Hopefully, one more of those." Even so, it figures to be a wild chase in the final official PGA TOUR event of the year. Ten players were separated by five shots, and Saturday showed that ground can be made up quickly. "Didn't have it on the back nine for me. Luckily I'm still within reach," Finau said. "A lot of guys scored today. Hopefully, I'm one of those guys tomorrow that takes it low. It's going to take probably a low to mid-60s round for me tomorrow." Viktor Hovland, who won in Puerto Rico in one of the final events before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down golf for three months, put together a string of birdies of his own down the stretch for a 63 that left him alone in third, two shots behind. Thomas didn’t feel as though he played that much differently from the second round, when he had a rough time on the greens in the afternoon and finished with two bogeys for a 67. He said he told his father it might have been the worst 67 ever shot. "I felt like I could have shot 60, 61, 62 and shot that," he said. "So I just really just tried to go out there and didn't really have a game plan or mentality, just try to hit the fairways and, with the ball in hand, just attack and make a bunch of birdies. And we did."

Emergency 9: Fantasy golf advice from Round 1 of the Wells Fargo ChampionshipEmergency 9: Fantasy golf advice from Round 1 of the Wells Fargo Championship

Here are nine tidbits from the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship that gamers can use tomorrow, this weekend or down the road. Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte has been the host since the creation of the event in 2003 and plays 7,544 yards to a Par-71. The 2017 WFC was played at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC.  Know Thy Enemy These were the top-10 picked golfers in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf game presented by SERVPRO. With swirling winds and tricky pin positions, John Peterson holds the lead alone after posting 65 (-6). Only 33 players are in red figures and only three of them occupy the list above. McIlroy is the low-man of the group with 68 followed by Finau and Day with 69. People’s Choice Rickie Fowler was the clear choice this week by gamers by almost 20 percent. While I don’t think that is a wrong decision, I’m curious how McIlroy was the THIRD choice here. Fowler, who defeated McIlroy and D.A. Points in a playoff here in 2012 to win on TOUR for the first time, hasn’t won this season but was coming off a back-door runner up at the Masters. Fowler hit 14-of-18 greens and was seventh in proximity yet only made one birdie against two bogeys for 72 (T59). If his putter warms up, he’ll be fine, so he’s sticking in my lineup. The Landlord The THIRD choice this week is the guy who holds the tournament record (-21), the course record TWICE (62, 2010; 61, 2015) and is the only multiple champ at this event. Rory McIlroy only hit four of 14 fairways but managed 14 of 18 GIR. He birdied all three par fives and had the putter rolling (T22, SG: putting) for his 68 (T7). On the Prowl He hasn’t visited Quail Hollow Club since 2012 (MC) but the 2007 champion Tiger Woods gave his investors hope in Round 1 with 71 (E). The one aspect I’ve taken away from Woods in this latest comeback is the tracks he is playing. Plain and simple, they’re not easy. I haven’t seen THAT nine holes yet where he’s circling birdies for fun. He’s grinding and, just as I predicted in my preview, is frustrated with the greens, their grain and speed. He finished No. 119 in SG: putting and yet is T34. Not the Norm, Peterson Texan John Peterson made back-to-back eagles late in Round 1 to post 65 (-6) and a two-shot lead. He was the second player to have back-to-back eagles on the day but the only one leading. Playing on a Major Medical Exemption, Peterson has only eight events this season to earn 274 FedExCup points to keep his full privileges. After playing five events he’s earned 20 of those 274 so a big result this week would go a very long way. Defending Champions The event defending champion is Brian Harman who won last year at Eagle Point Golf Club. Harman leads the TOUR in top-10 finishes this year so if you didn’t know that he didn’t win on this track last year, you’ve still picked a good one. He posted 72 and is T59. … The last player to win on this track at the 2017 PGA Championship was Justin Thomas. He sits T79 as he only found 10 GIR and checked in at 102nd in SG: putting. Gamers won’t like to hear that Round 2 is his worst scoring average of the four this season. He’ll need something positive to avoid missing his second straight weekend. Home Cookin’ Charlotte resident Johnson Wagner (T2) also made back-to-back eagles and added a birdie as he played his first six holes in five-under-par. He gave a couple back on “The Green Mile” (Holes Nos. 16-18) before playing the front in one-under 34. His 67 was his second best loop here in 33 rounds proving that home court advantage doesn’t mean much. His best finish in the previous 11 tries is T28.  Shock and Awe There are six players that are four-under or better after Round 1. Quail Hollow Club annually plays as one of the most difficult on TOUR so riddle me this: Study Hall The only two bogey-free rounds were turned in by Keegan Bradley (68) and Sam Burns (69). … Patrick Reed (71) didn’t make any birdies either but did have a double bogey. … Round 1 played 72.883 (+1.883). … Andrew Landry, winner at the Valero Texas Open two weeks ago, WD after Round 1 with an illness. … Martin Piller was a last-minute WD last week as he was headed home for the birth of his first child. He’s back playing this week but the #NappyFactor stork must have missed his house as he posted 75.

Paul Casey ready to end close callsPaul Casey ready to end close calls

ATLANTA – Paul Casey sits in his post round press conference and awaits the question. He knows it is coming. He’s already answered it 100 times but he knows, it’s coming again. Or at least some version of it. “How can you turn all these close calls into a win?â€ “What have you learned from the close calls you can use tomorrow?â€ “What would it mean to finally close the deal after so many close calls?â€ “How have you managed the frustration of coming so close so often?â€ Whichever way you spin it – the fact Casey has nine top 10s in the FedExCup Playoffs, including three runner ups, without winning one – has become a hot topic. In his last eight FedExCup Playoff events, he has six top-5 results. In the last two Playoff seasons he’s 80-under par, the best of anyone. He has 28 of 31 rounds in the FedExCup Playoffs at par or better since the start of 2016. In his last three seasons, he has 23 top 10s on the PGA TOUR but still only boasts the 2009 Shell Houston Open as his lone victory in the USA. The Englishman does have 12 career European Tour wins, so it is not as if he’s foreign to the top spot. The last of those though came at the KLM Open in 2014. But now he stands on the edge of ending the drought, and perhaps doing it in dramatic fashion. After opening the TOUR Championship 66-67-65 he sits at 12-under par and in the lead alone. He’s two shots clear of Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele and five shots clear of the next best contenders in Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. He could not only win the event, but also the season long FedExCup. “I don’t get frustrated when you ask. I take it as motivation. I take it as a compliment and then take a serious look at it as to okay, how can I make it happen. Because if you didn’t think I was capable, you wouldn’t ask me,â€ Casey said of the constant questioning as he faces a potentially restless night sleeping on the lead. The 39-year-old says many of his top-10 finishes haven’t really been true great opportunities. This one is. And given he has been to East Lake three times before and finished T4 (2010), T5 (2015) and 4th (2016) in those campaigns, he’s feeling confident. Not only is he in the box seat to win the TOUR Championship, but currently he is projected to also claim the season long FedExCup given the leaderboard. Coming in at 10th on the points list Casey needs to win the TOUR Championship and hope for the following help… Jordan Spieth needs to finish in a 3-way tie for 4th or worse. Spieth sits T13. Justin Thomas needs to finish T3 or worse. Thomas sits T4. Dustin Johnson needs to finish in a 3-way tie for 2nd or worse. Johnson is T13. Marc Leishman needs to finish T2 or worse. Leishman is T22. Jon Rahm can force a playoff for the FedExCup if he is 2nd alone behind Casey. Rahm is T6. “It would be amazing. I haven’t thought about it too much because I’m just trying to get the job done,â€ he added about the prospect of the FedExCup trophy and $10 million bonus. “Certainly it would be very satisfying knowing that I’ve had ups and downs in my career and this would be the biggest victory of my career.â€ Fellow Englishman Justin Rose, who also has desires of winning but sits seven shots back in a tie for ninth, knows it must be tough for his friend. “He’s had a great season. I think that’s obviously what’s got to be on his mind, when is it going to convert to a victory, for sure,â€ Rose said.  “He’s been knocking on the door and he loves this golf course. This is obviously a place he feels very comfortable so it could be good timing for him as well if he keeps playing well.â€ Casey has been the 54-hole leader twice on TOUR, converting one time in Houston over eight years ago. He averages 68.77 on Thursday’s this season on the PGA TOUR, ranked 1st on TOUR. Come Sunday its 70.33 which has him T67th on TOUR. The reason, he says, is putting too much pressure on himself. As such he will try to remain as relaxed as possible in the final round. “I’m probably trying too hard and maybe taking risks that are probably unnecessary,â€ Casey explained. “I have to hit fairways, I have to continue to hit quality tee shots. Same attitude. Maybe I’ll be a bit more nervous… It’s all those things. It’s just sort of maintaining the process. If I do that, then fingers crossed, everything takes care of itself.â€ The shakiness over the last few years gives life to the chasers. Jason Day, who will start six shots back in a tie for seventh, was ready to apply the heat. “That kind of gives us a little bit of hope knowing that he’s probably had opportunities before and hasn’t quite got over the line,â€ Day said.  “You never want to wish something bad against someone, but obviously if you can get yourself in contention and kind of capitalize on maybe the experiences that he’s had since 2009, he hasn’t won, that’s just how the game works.â€ Casey feels he’s ready to stand up to the heat this time. It won’t be long and we’ll know.
