Simpson stays patient, leads The RSM ClassicSimpson stays patient, leads The RSM Classic

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Webb Simpson was over par while his playing partners were going low in Thursday’s first round of The RSM Classic. He bogeyed his second hole on Sea Island’s Plantation Course, the easier of the two courses used this week, then failed to birdie the par-5 14th hole. His caddie, Paul Tesori, preached patience, and it paid off. Simpson played his final 13 holes in 8 under to shoot 65 and take the first-round lead. RELATED: Leaderboard | Wagner ties TOUR record with third albatross | Howell III stiil has burning desire to win “He told me, no matter how I started out, to stay patient, Simpson said. “I think he knew scores would be good over there (on the Plantation Course). He helped me weather the storm. Simpson is making just his second start of the fall season. He finished seventh at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. It was his 13th consecutive finish in the top 30, a span that includes three runners-up. Simpson has been a consistent contender at Sea Island, as well. He was runner-up in 2011, losing a playoff to Ben Crane, and finished third last year, a shot out of the playoff won by Charles Howell III. Simpson got stuck on Seaside in the worse side of the draw in the first round, but battled back with a 63-65 weekend. The year prior, Simpson was in 12th place at the halfway point but withdrew after the second round to be with his ailing father, who died shortly after. Simpson thrives on classic courses and said he plays well anytime he’s near the ocean in the southeastern United States. “I grew up going to the beach in Wilmington, so I just love anytime I get close to the coast here, Simpson said. Simpson is seeking his first win since the 2018 PLAYERS. He had three runners-up last season. Rory McIlroy beat him with a final-round 61 at the RBC Canadian Open. J.T. Poston shot 62 on Sunday of the Wyndham Championship. Simpson’s final-round 64 at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational was the low round of the day, but he started too far back to catch Brooks Koepka. “It’s been awhile since I’ve won, Simpson said. “I’ve given myself chances here. Starting this week, all I wanted was a chance Sunday because I do feel comfortable here.

How Jason Kokrak’s putter switch paid dividends at the Charles Schwab ChallengeHow Jason Kokrak’s putter switch paid dividends at the Charles Schwab Challenge

Jason Kokrak made more than 200 PGA TOUR starts before earning his first victory. Now he has won twice in a matter of months, after staring down local favorite Jordan Spieth at last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge. The 36-year-old ranks fifth in this season’s FedExCup standings thanks to wins at Colonial and the CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK in October. He has finished in the top 25 in nearly half his starts this season and sits fifth in the FedExCup standings. The putter has been the biggest difference-maker for Kokrak. He is sixth in Strokes Gained: Putting after having an average ranking of 124th in that statistic in his previous nine PGA TOUR seasons. Adjustments made in late 2020 to Kokrak’s Bettinardi Studio Stock 38 putter are bearing serious fruit. It was Kokrak’s caddie, David Robinson (no, not that David Robinson), who recommended that his boss move to a longer putter. The 6-foot-4 Kokrak now uses a 36-inch shaft in his putter, which improves his grip on the putter. “I worked with Bettinardi a little bit. Went to their studio and learned what my tendencies were. I went up in loft a few years ago, four or five years ago, more than I was comfortable with.” said Kokrak. “But then … my caddie saw that I was holding the putter kind of in the base of my palm here. Both hands weren’t completely on the putter. He said, ‘Don’t change anything, just go to a 36-inch putter,’ and that’s made all the difference.” The longer putter helps Kokrak stand taller at address, as well. And Robinson’s green-reading ability has been a key part of Kokrak’s putting improvement. “Ever since we got together four years ago, I called him up and said, ‘Listen, this is going a good ride,’” Kokrak said. “I’m a pretty good ball-striker and you’re a great green reader and we’ll make a good duo.” Kokrak also adjusted the loft of his Studio Stock 38 to 4 degrees before the Charles Schwab Challenge. That helped the ball roll better in the soft and wet conditions at Colonial. Model: Studio Stock 38 Weight: 358 grams Material: 303 Stainless Steel Finish: Platinum Face Milling: F.I.T. Face

Streb nearly holes out in a playoff to win at Sea IslandStreb nearly holes out in a playoff to win at Sea Island

Robert Streb now has two PGA Tour victories, both at Sea Island, both times winning in a playoff. Six years after he had to rally from a five-shot deficit, Streb failed to protect a three-shot lead Sunday and felt the RSM Classic slipping away until piecing together three big shots to beat Kevin Kisner, none bigger than his final full swing. ”We were planning on the ball kind of knuckling out of there and jumping,” Streb said.
