Choi’s ‘been practicing hard’ for second PGA TOUR start

SILVAS, Ill. – John Deere Classic fans have never experienced a sponsor’s exemption quite like Ho Sung Choi, the internet sensation with the funky “fishermanâ€ swing. But has Choi ever experienced a John Deere tractor? “I haven’t had the opportunity to drive one,â€ Choi said through a translator in his press conference at TPC Deere Run on Tuesday. “But I saw a lot of it set up near the entryway, so I took a lot of pictures. I got to sit in the tractor, and it reminded me of something from the movie ‘Transformers.’  “I thought it was so cool, and it was really interesting for me,â€ he added, “so I took a lot of pictures. I was trying to drive it, but there were no keys available, so I just sat in the seat.â€ This week will mark the second PGA TOUR start for Choi, who shot 72-75-77 to miss the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this season. He will also tee it up at the Barracuda Championship in Reno later this summer. He says he’s been practicing hard for his second-ever trip to the United States, and is encouraged to be getting closer the best season for his golf: fall.  The son of a fisherman father and a free-diver mother, Choi grew up in Pohang, a port city in South Korea. A thumb injury made him ineligible for military service, and he wound up working part-time at Anyang Golf Club, where part of the job meant learning how to play the game himself. Using golf magazines and trial and error, Choi improved quickly and turned pro a few years later. He won several times on the Korean Tour, once on the Japan Tour, and cracked the top 200 in the world with a victory at the 2018 Casio World Open. He was 45, and becoming a cult favorite among fans. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was among his celebrity fans and asked to be paired with him at Pebble Beach. They hit it off, and became, as Golf Digest put it, “the most adorable sports bromance on the planet.â€ Much of the buzz has been about Choi’s swing, which he calls “fun,â€ so it has not gone unnoticed that Matthew Wolff, another pro with an unconventional action, just won the 3M Open, an inaugural event on the TOUR. “Matthew actually hit behind me on the range yesterday,â€ Choi said, “and I got to meet him on the range, and I was most impressed with his rhythm. I thought his rhythm with the golf swing was just amazing, and he was so powerful with his swing and he could just send the ball so far. So, I was very impressed, and I thought he had a beautiful swing.â€ As for his goals this week, he said it was windier than he expected in a practice round, and getting up and down from around the greens wasn’t easy. “I just want to make the cut and see where it goes from there,â€ he said. And maybe, just maybe, get a ride on one of those tractors.

The First Look: The RSM ClassicThe First Look: The RSM Classic

The fall portion of the 2019-20 PGA TOUR season wraps up next week at The RSM Classic. Tournament host Davis Love III will be in the field as he also unveils the newly-designed Plantation course at Sea Island Golf Club, a project he worked on his with his brother throughout 2019. Charles Howell III defends his title after topping Patrick Rodgers in a playoff last year. It was Howell’s third PGA TOUR win, and his first since 2007. FIELD NOTES: Presidents Cup participants Matt Kuchar and Adam Hadwin will be in the field along with International assistant KJ Choi in the last official PGA TOUR event before this year’s competition… Lanto Griffin, who currently tops the FedExCup standings, will be looking to continue his fantastic fall… Per usual, The RSM Classic field will be chock-full of local residents including Patton Kizzire, Zach Johnson, Harris English, Hudson Swafford, Jonathan Byrd and J.T. Poston, among others… Past champions Mackenzie Hughes, Robert Streb, Austin Cook, Ben Crane, and Kevin Kisner will be looking to rekindle some old magic… Sebastian Munoz and Brendon Todd join Griffin as fall winners in the field in Georgia. FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 points. STORYLINES: Four of the nine RSM Classic winners made the event their first PGA TOUR win (Austin Cook, Mackenzie Hughes, Robert Streb, Tommy Gainey)… This is the last event for TOUR pros to earn FedExCup points prior to 2020, along with the final opportunity to earn a spot in January’s Sentry Tournament of Champions… Adam Hadwin and Matt Kuchar are using The RSM Classic as their final warm-up prior to playing in the Presidents Cup… Despite Sea Island having a plethora of PGA TOUR pros living there, no resident of Sea Island has actually won The RSM Classic. Chris Kirk lived there for nearly seven years, but moved to Atlanta prior to his win in 2013. Kevin Kisner won in 2015, but was only living in Sea Island temporarily during a re-model of his South Carolina home. COURSE: Sea Island GC (Seaside), 7,005 yards, par 70. What got its start as a nine-hole layout built in 1929 was redone by Tom Fazio in 1999. He was tasked with bringing two existing nine-hole tracks together. Davis Love III and his brother Mark redesigned the Plantation Course at Sea Island in 2019. Entrants in The RSM Classic will play one of their first two rounds on the Plantation.  72-HOLE RECORD: 260, Kevin Kisner (2015). 18-HOLE RECORD: 60, Tommy Gainey (4th round, 2012). LAST TIME: Although Charles Howell III led all week long a year ago, he still needed a strong finish to notch his first TOUR title in more than a decade. Howell birdied three of his final four holes to tie Patrick Rodgers and then birdied the second playoff hole for the victory. Howell shot 31 on his final nine holes to finish at 19-under (64-64-68-67) for the week. Four players (Howell, Rodgers, Webb Simpson, and Cameron Champ) shared the lead through the back nine. Simpson finished alone in third, while Ryan Blaum and Luke List finished T4. Champ, meanwhile, bogeyed the 17th to finish alone in sixth. Sleeper Picks: WGC-FedEx St. Jude InvitationalSleeper Picks: WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational

Mackenzie Hughes … It’s probably an insult to drop him in here, but the 29-year-old from Canada hasn’t qualified for a World Golf Championship since the 2017 edition of this event when it was held at Firestone Country Club’s South Course. His most recent three starts include a T3 at the Travelers Championship, where he led the field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green, and T6 at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, where he paced the field in Strokes Gained: Putting. Looping in a runner-up finish at The Honda Classic in what was his last start before the hiatus, all three of his top-45 finishes this season are top sixes. He’s also missed 10 of 17 cuts, but that can’t happen this week, so the promise of 72 holes plays into his firepower. Matt Jones … This is the Aussie’s first appearance in a World Golf Championship in four years. He qualified for this week’s with a victory at the Emirates Australian Open in December. Aside from the hiatus, it’s been a largely quiet 2020, but a T5 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and a T14 at the Workday Charity Open are timely highlights. In the latter at Muirfield Village, he flashed confidence around and on the greens. Now he settles into a site where he went 4-for-5 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic from 2015-2018 with a T3, a T18 and a scoring average of 69.125. Joel Dahmen … Given his consistently strong form over time, it’s a little hard to believe that this marks his debut in a World Golf Championship. It’s not his first look at TPC Southwind, or his second. As a PGA TOUR rookie in 2017, the native of Washington State placed T18 in the FedEx St. Jude Classic. It was one of only two top 40s in 16 starts that season. His propensity to keep his ball in play off the tee keeps his options open on approach. A moxie evidenced with the ability to connect low rounds all the while maximizing course management support why he’s dangerous in a limited-field event with no cut. While Muirfield Village knocked him around in six rounds earlier this month, he’s already hung up a pair of top 20s in the restart. For the season, the 32-year-old has four top 10s among eight top 20s. Shaun Norris … The 38-year-old South African has only eight PGA TOUR starts under his belt and he didn’t crack the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time until October of 2018, but he’s figured out how to retain positioning at this level. Even after early struggles on the Japan Golf Tour in 2019, he regrouped to finish second in the Order of Merit for the second straight season. He’s won once in each of his four years on that circuit, and he led the JGTO in putts per GIR last year. Opened 2020 by going 5-for-5 worldwide with a T6 in Abu Dhabi and a T18 in Oman. In between, his T37 at the WGC-Mexico Championship registered as his career-best finish in PGA TOUR competition. Robert MacIntyre … The lefty was the last of the 15 additional qualifiers via the Official World Golf Ranking on July 20 to construct a field of 78. His T6 at The Open Championship in 2019 punctuated a seriously strong season en route to the Rookie of the Year award on the European Tour. He didn’t win but he finished second three times and totaled seven top 10s, and then opened 2020 with a T8 in Dubai. The Scot will turn 24 on the Monday following the conclusion of the WGC-St. Jude. NOTE: Sleeper is a relative term, so Rob uses unofficial criteria to determine who qualifies. Each of the following usually is determined to be ineligible for this weekly staple: Winners of the tournament on the current host course; winners in the same season; recent major champions; top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking; recent participants of team competitions.
