Butterfield Bermuda Championship Partners with Aspen Bermuda Limited to Deliver Impactful Sustainability Program

The Butterfield Bermuda Championship has announced a newfound partnership with Aspen Bermuda Limited for 2022 in their quest to move closer to a more sustainable future for Bermuda’s annual PGA TOUR event. Many new and innovative solutions are being implemented at the tournament this year and thereafter to create an ever-increasingly environmentally friendly event. Mark Pickering, CEO of Aspen Bermuda Limited says “Aspen Bermuda Limited is proud to be the inaugural sustainability partner of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship as we continue our commitment to our local communities”. Plastic is detrimental to Bermuda’s oceans, wildlife, and population. As the harm caused by single-use micro-plastics increases, it becomes a prominent issue that requires close attention from the sporting events industry. Therefore, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship is taking great strides to implement a successful “green” event plan, which is intended to set the sustainability standard of excellence for other sporting events to follow. 2022 Event plans include a vast reduction of single-use plastic passing through Port Royal Golf Course throughout the tournament. Water stations positioned throughout the golf course will enable attendees to re-fill their water bottles with no bottled water available to purchase on-site. Aspen Bermuda Limited will giveaway 500 reusable water bottles daily at the entrance gate to promote single-use plastic awareness. In addition, the volunteer headquarters is reducing plastic waste by providing reusable water bottles to all Butterfield Bermuda Championship volunteers. Concession stands will serve drinks in reusable cups rather than single-use plastic cups. The on-site TAG recycling programme, new in 2022, involves collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) and Cerobin. The specially designed Cerobins, placed throughout the golf course, will separate tin, aluminium, and glass from general waste. This separation helps to ensure the TAG items are processed correctly at Bermuda’s local recycling facility. All other regular trash will be disposed of at Tynes Bay, where the incinerator converts waste to energy. Transportation throughout the tournament is an extensive logistical operation. The 2022 championship will move entirely to electric buses to transport its volunteers, spectators, and tournament guests. Tournament staff are using a fleet of electric cars to move around the island in the advanced months of the tournament to reduce the event’s carbon footprint. This year, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship has partnered with Bermuda Sands and Cutter & Buck to produce an environmentally friendly uniform. The polo shirts produced by Bermuda Sands are made from 90% recycled water bottles. Volunteer jackets produced by Cutter & Buck are also made from recyclable materials. 2022 sees the move from paper tickets, pairing guides and course maps to a digital format. All mentioned will be accessible via a smartphone and a QR code, reducing paper waste significantly. A continuing partnership with Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) will help to ensure that areas of Bermuda impacted directly by the tournament are maintained and that the Butterfield Bermuda Championship leaves no trace on the local environment. These areas include the ferry docking station, Whale Bay beach, Munro Beach Cottages beach and Pompano. The tournament staff also partake in beach clean-ups to help maintain the coastline of Bermuda. In addition to this, tournament staff regularly participate in KBB clean-ups to help maintain the beauty of Bermuda, specifically in Southampton and around Port Royal Golf Course. These areas include sections of the railway trail, roadsides and bus stops, the Rockaway ferry dock and various south shore beaches.

U.S. Team leads Presidents Cup as Tom Kim gives International Team a sparkU.S. Team leads Presidents Cup as Tom Kim gives International Team a spark

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The U.S. Team has a juggernaut in Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas that moved them closer to another victory in the Presidents Cup on Saturday. The International Team has a spark plug in 20-year-old Tom Kim, who delivered the emotion and big putts that made it clear the Americans will have to work for it. The day started with the Americans having a mathematical chance to clinch the cup. It ended with them holding an 11-7 lead, with 12 singles matches left on Sunday. Spieth and Thomas became only the second U.S. partnership to win all four team matches in the Presidents Cup, handily winning their Foursomes match in the morning and their Fourballs match in the afternoon. The International Team split the morning matches, and the way this Presidents Cup has gone for them, not losing ground felt like a win. And then it got better. They rallied over the final hour in two matches to turn deficits into 1-up wins, taking the afternoon session by winning three of the four matches. The star was Kim, the youngest player at Quail Hollow and perhaps the biggest personality. He started the comeback with a 55-foot eagle putt on the par-4 11th hole against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. They were all square going to the last, Si Woo Kim already out of the hole, and Tom Kim facing a 10-foot birdie putt for the win. He took a few steps back as the ball neared the hole, dropped his putter and slammed his cap to the ground in a raucous celebration. “I wanted that putt more than anything in the world,” Kim said. Moments later, Adam Scott and Cameron Davis rallied from 1 down with three holes remaining when Davis made a 12-foot eagle putt on the 16th and a 15-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to go 1 up. On the final hole, Sam Burns hit his approach to 4 feet that gave him and Billy Horschel a chance to earn a halve. And then Davis made a 10-foot birdie for another point. The Americans are still very much in control, needing only four wins and a halve from the 12 singles matches in the final session. Spieth and Thomas have led the way. The only other U.S. tandem in a Presidents Cup to go 4-0 was Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker at Harding Park in 2009. The International Team had Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace do the same in South Korea in 2015. Thomas and Spieth have been close friends for 15 years, dating to junior golf and international outings. This is the first time in a Presidents Cup that they have been paired together, and both are on their games. It a lethal combination. Even so, the end of the matches gave Spieth pause. “We’ve got to go get the job done tomorrow and win two more points for our team,” Spieth said. “I’d love to get a singles win, and I know Justin would, too. We’re going to be close enough where our two would be obviously extremely important.” Kim won both his matches Saturday, teaming with K.H. Lee in morning foursomes to beat Burns and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, 2 and 1. Scott is playing on his 10th team — eight losses and one tie — and was shut out until he and Hideki Matsuyama took down Collin Morikawa and Cameron Young in the morning, and Scott and Davis proved to be a great Australian duo in the afternoon. “Any victory against the U.S. Team has got to be really hard fought,” Scott said. “So this feels good.” Max Homa is still having the week of his life. After his late heroics the night before, he partnered with Tony Finau in a 4-and-3 victory over Si Woo Kim and Davis. Homa sat out the afternoon session. He is 3-0 in his debut playing in a Presidents Cup. Schauffele and Cantlay lost for the first time in three matches this week. They were 2 up after 10 holes and were 3 under the rest of the way, with Schauffele making a 40-foot birdie putt from short of the 15th green for a 1-up lead that looked like it would carry them to another point. Instead, Si Woo Kim made a 4-foot birdie putt to square the match on the 16th, and a 5-foot par putt to keep it tied on the 17th. Tom Kim was so nervous he covered his eyes and was peaking through his fingers, pumping his fist when the putt dropped. And then the 20-year-old Korean had the stage to himself at the end, and he delivered a winner. Left to be seen is what one putt — one point — can do for an International Team that still has a four-point deficit to overcome.

Nike is referring to the collection of three different shoes as the “Lawn Party Pack, and the shoes will be individually available on Thursday. During the Wednesday Pro-Am, Nike staffers will be wearing a red-and-white “OG Air Max 1 golf shoe. On Saturday, players will be wearing the “Green Day grass shoes, with artificial turf on the uppers. On Sunday, players will be wearing the black/white/gold/money-colored “Payday shoes. Also, the “Payday and “Green Day shoes will be available as part of a pack, and they will come in a Waste Management-truck replica box. This pack will be “very limited at retail on Nike.com on Thursday, according to a Nike rep. Below is a bit more information, as per a Nike rep, and photos of the Waste Management Phoenix Open special Nike shoes The “OG Air Max 1 golf shoes “The OG – so this is based around the Air Max 1 … we did a golf shoe inspired by our running model. It’s coming out right now… what we wanted to do is use the momentum and what’s going on at Waste Management. The “Green Day grass shoes “Green Day. Saturday is Green Day. What if we had a grass shoe, grass camo. Just for fun. That’s where that started, and just something crazy that you wouldn’t expect to see on the course. The “Paydays “Sunday is payday for golfers, so we took shredded money and melted it into the outsole. This is not real money … our original had real money and then we went back and forth with legal, eh probably not a good idea. So we have an image of shredded money, shredded, and then we put that on there. The “Limited Pack “This is another thing we’re doing for some of our promo athletes, and we’ve got a handful of these coming out to retail through Nike.com as well. So what we did was we created this box … we’ve got our compost (box), which is our grass shoe. We’ve got our recycling (box), which is the shredded money. Just all in one, in one nice packaging.
