Bryson on back-9 44: ‘Bad break after bad break’

Bryson DeChambeau had gone 30 consecutive holes without a bogey before things imploded on the back nine for the defending U.S. Open champion. He shot a final-round 6-over 77, finishing in a tie for 26th at Torrey Pines.

Early-week alternate Dylan Wu making magic at The American ExpressEarly-week alternate Dylan Wu making magic at The American Express

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Dylan Wu is no stranger to going low as an alternate. Four years ago, the Northwestern alum earned a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour's Memorial Health Championship presented by LRS as an alternate, then proceeded to finish second. It changed his season and ultimately kick-started a run toward a PGA TOUR card. Now Wu has returned to alternate life; he finished No. 150 on last season's FedExCup, meaning conditional status and a lot of hours monitoring field lists to see where he stands. Things broke his way at The American Express. Wu gained a spot in the field Monday when Kyle Stanley withdrew. He has taken advantage. Wu carded 11-under 61 in Saturday's third round, matching a tournament-low score at PGA West's Nicklaus Tournament Course and moving into a tie for ninth at 17-under total. The event features a three-course rotation, also including PGA West's Stadium Course and La Quinta CC. Sunday's final round will be contested at the Stadium Course. Wu knew that magic this week could go a long way, and he entered Saturday's third round in a tie for 59th, squarely on the cut line. Propelled by a run of six consecutive birdies on the back nine Saturday, Wu moved within six strokes of co-leaders Jon Rahm and Davis Thompson into Sunday. He'll have an outside chance at a title and, not unimportantly, a great chance at accruing a good chunk of FedExCup points to improve his status for the rest of the year. Wu knows Saturday could be a fork-in-the-road moment in his career, and its significance isn't lost. Sunday could be, as well. "I thought I wouldn't get into (the Sony Open in) Hawaii or The American Express," Wu said after Saturday's third round in the Coachella Valley. "And there's no Monday qualifier. I ended up getting into Hawaii, missed the cut by one ... so that was frustrating, for sure. "You have to make the most of these opportunities and be OK with (the fact that) you might be first alternate come Thursday and somebody withdraws and you get in. So that's the reality until you play better and get out of that category ... Today, this week, it just shows that the work I'm putting in in the offseason is slowly helping." After moving to 11-under through 16 holes Saturday, thoughts of 59 crept into Wu's mind. He two-putted for par at the par-3 eighth, meaning he would need eagle on the 461-yard, par-4 finisher to achieve golf's magic number. Adrenaline kicked in, and Wu's tee shot found water left of the fairway. He didn't think he could reach it. He quickly recovered with a wedge to 8 feet and then drained the curling par putt, punctuated by a fist pump. It's his career low on the PGA TOUR, and plenty to build on. Wu was greeted off the final green by fellow TOUR pro Justin Lower, his teammate at last year's Zurich Classic of New Orleans; the duo finished T10. "I told other people, one of my goals this year is to have a later tee time on Sunday," Wu said. "Getting top-10, being in the mix, is something any golfer wants. It's been a while since I've done that. I know I'm capable of it. Just need to keep on working hard ... I know there are a lot of birdies to be made." With 11 birdies on Saturday, he certainly proved that.

PGA TOUR statement regarding additional tournament cancellationsPGA TOUR statement regarding additional tournament cancellations

PGA TOUR statement regarding additional tournament cancellations: The health and safety of everyone associated with the PGA TOUR and the global community is and will continue to be our No. 1 priority as we navigate the ongoing health crisis related to the Coronavirus Pandemic. On March 12, the PGA TOUR made the announcement to cancel or postpone four weeks of events on all six Tours through the week of the Valero Texas Open (March 30-April 5). Augusta National Golf Club also announced the postponement of the Masters Tournament (April 6-12). With the most recent recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and the Office of the President of the United States, the PGA TOUR will now cancel four additional events: RBC Heritage (April 13-19); Zurich Classic of New Orleans (April 20-26); Wells Fargo Championship (April 27-May 3); and AT&T Byron Nelson (May 4-10). Furthermore, the PGA of America has postponed the PGA Championship (May 14-17) for a date later this year, to be announced. Also announced today, the USGA is currently holding the dates for the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club as scheduled (June 18-21) but will, as all of us are, continue to monitor the developing situation and follow recommendations by government authorities. As we receive more clarity in the coming weeks, the TOUR will be working with our tournament organizations and title sponsors, in collaboration with golf’s governing bodies, to build a PGA TOUR schedule for 2020 that ensures the health and safety for all associated with our sport and a meaningful conclusion to the season. We will provide further updates when those plans come into focus. Today’s cancellation of PGA TOUR events through May 10 applies to all six Tours, although PGA TOUR Champions has rescheduled The Regions Tradition. Originally slated for May 7-10, the event will now be played September 24-27. PGA TOUR Champions previously announced on March 16 that the Mastercard Japan Championship (June 12-14) will not be contested due to the current travel advisories in place from the CDC, the WHO and the U.S. Department of State. We will continue to work with the tournaments and partners affected by the schedule changes to make a positive impact in their respective communities and allow those events to come back at full strength in 2021. To give our fans respite from this ongoing situation, the PGA TOUR is working with its partners to make available archives of past PGA TOUR competitions and additional programming for fans. More details will be made available soon.” SUMMARY OF CHANGES As we work together to help reduce the spread of Coronavirus, we urge our fans – and everyone around the world – to be mindful of the health and safety measures in place: 1) Wash or sanitize your hands frequently. 2) Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze with your elbow. 3) Observe social distancing and avoid large crowds. 4) Avoid contact with your face with your hands. 5) If you have symptoms related to Coronavirus, please stay home from work or other obligations and seek medical attention. For more please visit the Centers for Disease Control’s information page.
