Bryson DeChambeau continues to push the speed barrier

KAPALUA, Hawaii - Bryson DeChambeau spent his holiday break trying to push himself to the point of passing out as his search for incredible swing and ball speed continues. The U.S. Open champion responded to a poor effort at the Masters last November by getting back to work as he looks to take his already prodigious distance to even higher levels in 2021. And after a solid 4-under 69 to open the Sentry Tournament of Champions - a score that left him just four off the pace - the 27-year-old explained his off-season with long drive champion Kyle Berkshire was already beginning to show fruit. RELATED: Full leaderboard | Thomas, English share lead at Sentry Tournament of Champions "I spent my off-season swinging my butt off as hard as I can. There were times where everything hurt in my body and it was breaking down my whole nervous system and rebuilding it back up," DeChambeau said from Kapalua. "There were numerous times where I was seeing a tunnel and I had to stop. I did not blackout, but I came very close, just like (Kyle) did." Berkshire - who recently revealed he is trying to make the transition from long drive champion to PGA TOUR player - was able to lift his swing speed from 119 miles per hour in college to 150 mph by the time he was the longest man on the planet. DeChambeau has formed a partnership of sorts with the 24-year-old as they look to help each other hone their craft. The seven-time PGA TOUR winner tried to explain some of the techniques the pair worked on that saw them on the brink of collapse. "I’m not going to give away what he told me to the utmost (but) he gave me some nice little secrets," DeChambeau said. "I implemented some of his techniques. A lot of it has to do with pushing the limits of your body and going for long hours of swinging your golf club with a golf ball and trying to help up the ball speed. "There are points where, I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced a runner’s high or something like that, where you get these extra endorphins and that’s kind of what breaks your neurological CNS (central nervous system) ... which is a great thing. And over time as you keep building it and you keep pushing it and pushing it just keeps going up and up." DeChambeau estimates he has perhaps added 20-yards of distance with his recent speed gains over the break - and says he now hits an 8-iron 205 yards. In Thursday's opening round in Maui, DeChambeau ranked second in Strokes Gained: Off-the Tee, just fractionally behind Carlos Ortiz and was also second in driving distance with his 317.7-yard average beaten by Cameron Champ (322.4). His longest drive of the day was a 405-yard rocket at the 12th. The former U.S. Amateur champion's swing speed on the one radar measured hole (par-4 3rd) sat at 135 mph with a ball speed of 196.29 mph. It is these numbers DeChambeau is determined to lift. He expects to get to his ultimate goal over the next 18 months. "I’m going to keep getting speed until I try and get around 205 to 210 (ball speed). Once I achieve those speeds and I’m comfortable with that, not trying to swing my butt off, it just happens naturally, that’s when I’ll probably stop and go down the chipping rabbit hole and try and understand my chipping and wedging a lot bit better," DeChambeau revealed. "I still feel like there’s some low hanging fruit with the driver, the speed I can gain. It’s fun. I hit 7-iron into 18 today... I hit pitching wedge into five, albeit I parred it. Putting still matters. But these distances are allowing me to do things that I never thought were possible, which is cool." There was one new issue for the big hitter though. "The only problem is walking these hills. You add 30 more pounds it’s a hike," he said. "It’s different. I have to create some endurance for that. I don’t just need strength; I need endurance with these muscles."

Tiger Woods expected to play new ball in The Match, PNCTiger Woods expected to play new ball in The Match, PNC

Tiger Woods is making an equipment switch for Saturday’s edition of Capital One’s The Match, and it just so happens to be the item that golfers use most often. Golf.com first reported that Woods is expected to switch to Bridgestone’s B X golf ball for the next two weeks. As part of a busy December, Woods is scheduled to compete in the PNC Championship alongside son Charlie after Saturday’s match, where he will team with FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy to face Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. Woods, who last competed at The Open in July, had been using a Bridgestone B XS golf ball, which is a softer, higher-spinning ball. Woods has traditionally played a softer ball with more spin to have more variety with his approach shots and around the greens. Artistry with his irons and a myriad of short-game shots have been hallmarks of Woods’ historic career. According to Golf.com, Woods began testing the B X on his at-home simulator and noticed that the ball carried 10 yards farther. The B X is firmer and offers lower flight and spin than the B XS ball. “These are more of an exhibition-type situation, and I think that’s factoring into his decision,” Elliot Mellow, Bridgestone’s golf ball marketing manager, told Golf.com. “So he’ll be a Tour B X player at least for the next few events. He’s been looking at distance and the greenside spin is where it needs to be.” After testing the ball on his simulator, Woods did on-course testing with the ball in The Bahamas before withdrawing from the Hero World Challenge with plantar fasciitis. “The real test was (in the Bahamas during Hero week) where it hit it into different winds and liked the ball flight,” Mellow told Golf.com. “The comments we’ve heard from Tiger and his team is that it’s really cool that if he’s looking for something different, we don’t have to go out and build him a specific ball. He can just go to something we’re already making that’s on the retail shelf.” Bridgestone expects Woods to return to the B XS ball when he returns to official competition in the new year, however. “The Tour B XS is still a ball he helped co-design, and it’s a ball he’ll probably go back to in those situations where he needs more playability and workability in the golf ball,” said Mellow. “We don’t get the impression this is a permanent thing. It’s more situational. He’s chasing distance more than spin for all the obvious reasons.”

DraftKings preview: The Honda ClassicDraftKings preview: The Honda Classic

The fourth and final tournament in the Florida Swing is The Honda Classic, which will play on the Champion Course at PGA National. The course is a par 70, measuring 7,125 yards and will be putt on Bermuda greens. Last season, the tournament was first in the Florida Swing and won by Sungjae Im (+1300, $11,000). Set your DraftKings fantasy golf lineups here: PGA TOUR $750K Flop Shot [$200K to 1st] STRATEGY PGA National is a Tom Fazio design that was renovated a few times over the past couple of decades by Jack Nicklaus. One of the more evident and consequential changes was back in 2018 when the greens increased close to 30% in size to around 7,000 feet on average. Past winners also include Keith Mitchell (+10000, $7,200), Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler (+4500, $8,900), Rory McIlory, Russell Henley (+3000, $9,800), Padraig Harrington (+25000, $6,800) twice and Adam Scott. PGA National is a challenging course. In scoring relative to par, The Honda Classic has ranked inside the top 5 most difficult courses over the past few years and has been one of the few non-major tournaments annually to rank this high. The greens have consistently played difficult, recording around 59 percent hit in regulation rate, which is more than 10 percent less than the TOUR average. Something we've seen consistently on the Florida Swing is golfers electing accuracy off-the-tee over distance and PGA National is no exception. A ton of water, which is in play on virtually every hole, and the potential for windy conditions play a pivotal role in why average driving distance is 11 yards less here than the TOUR average. Since 2016, 25 percent of rounds have played in extremely windy conditions, and only 10 percent have played in calm conditions. The infamous "Bear Trap," hole Nos. 15-17, is a daunting challenge coming in. Per SHOT LINK data from last season, these three rank as the third-toughest stretch on TOUR among courses that have been played in at least 10 or more seasons since 2007 (non-majors). Two of the holes are par 3s, which rank as the fourth- and fifth-toughest on the course. Those who finish inside the top 5 are gaining more strokes on the par 3s than the par 4s and par 5s. Par 4 efficiency will be important as it is with all par 70s. GOLFERS TO CONSIDER Joaquin Niemann (+2000 to Win, $10,400 on DraftKings) Niemann struggled on Sunday last week but still finished inside the top 30, gaining 1.2 strokes tee-to-green. Niemann doesn't have the best record on Bermuda greens but has gained strokes in six of his past 12 rounds with his flat stick on said surface. Putting will matter at PGA National, but not as much as ball striking, and Niemann, who's one of the best drivers of the ball, should do well here, ranking third in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and 19th in approach over his previous 24 rounds. His work on the par 4s over his last two dozen rounds has gotten him inside the top 20 in par 4 efficiency, and he hasn't lost strokes tee-to-green in nine measured rounds this season. Russell Henley (+3000 to Win, $9,800 on DraftKings) Henley couldn't make the weekend at TPC Sawgrass last week, losing close to three strokes with his irons, which is unlike him. Still, Henley has been one of the best ball-strikers on TOUR over the past couple of seasons and has an impeccable record at PGA National, ranking seventh in Strokes Gained: Total here since 2016. Henley's extremely accurate Off-the-Tee and is precise with his approaches from 175 to 200 yards, ranking 21st in the field over the past 24 rounds. Hopefully, his missed cut last week keeps his roster percentage lower than it should be at a par 70, Bermuda course in Florida. Chez Reavie (+12500 to Win, $7,000 on DraftKings) Reavie suffered a similar fate as Henley at THE PLAYERS, but it was at the hands of his putter, losing 6.1 strokes on the greens last week. Conversely, he gained four strokes with his irons and 1.4 Off-the-Tee. His short game has been dreadful, but he's gained with his ball-striking in four straight starts.
