An in as Day bows out of Presidents Cup

Byeong Hun An will make his Presidents Cup debut for the International Team at Royal Melbourne after Jason Day has been forced to withdraw with a back injury. Day reaggravated an ongoing back complaint during practice in Palm Springs after returning from the recent Mayakoba Golf Classic, forcing the 12-time PGA TOUR winner to forego his position on Ernie Els’ International Team on Dec. 12-15 and his place in the Australian Open next week. Captain Els moved quickly to name a replacement in An, who was unlucky not to be selected in the first place given a strong start to the 2019-20 PGA TOUR season. “We wish Jason well and hope his back recovers quickly. We were eager to have Jason as part of the team at Royal Melbourne and his experience will be missed,â€ Els said. “The good news is that there were a number of strong and qualified players available to choose from when I made my captain’s selections. To have someone as steady and talented as Ben An puts us in a great position to succeed. Ben played extremely well this fall and throughout the year and he will fit in nicely on this team.â€ An was third at the Sanderson Farms Championship and added top-10s at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES (T6) and ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP (T8). He also finished T14 at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and sits 16th in the FedExCup after the fall series. While An is winless in his 103 PGA TOUR starts the 28-year-old has three runner ups and has match play pedigree as the youngest ever winner of the U.S. Amateur – taking out the 2009 title as a 17-year-old. “I’m sorry to hear that Jason has been forced to withdraw from the International Team and I wish him a speedy recovery. It was a huge surprise to receive a call from Ernie who told me that I was in the team,â€ An said. “It has been a goal of mine all season to be on the International Team and I am honored to play in my first Presidents Cup. I’m looking forward to joining Ernie and the rest of the team in Melbourne and, more importantly, contribute to the International Team’s goal to win the Cup.â€ An’s selection brings the average age of what was already the youngest Presidents Cup team in the events history further down to just under 29 and gives Els seven rookies in his 12-man squad. Only once before has the International Team had seven newcomers – in 2013 at Muirfield Village. Coincidentally current team members Marc Leishman, Louis Oosthuizen and Hideki Matsuyama were three of those debutants in Ohio and might be able to impart some wisdom to their teammates. With the U.S. team holding a 10-1-1 advantage overall in the biennial contest perhaps new blood is exactly what the Internationals need. “I’m here to try and win enough points to get us over the line, and that’s what the players’ mission is, is to try and get enough points to get the Cup back. If that’s off the back of the rookies, so be it,â€ Els said earlier this month. Meanwhile, the injury is worrisome for Day, who is winless since early 2018 and managed just one top-10 finish after the Masters last season. In his last start in Mexico – which came right after Els plumped for him as a captains pick – Day was out of sorts and missed the cut. The 32-year-old has a history of back problems that have hindered him throughout his career. “I’m quite disappointed I won’t be coming home to play in either the Australian Open in Sydney or the Presidents Cup the following week in Melbourne,â€ Day said via a statement. “I was quite looking forward to both events. I had been prepping all week in Palm Springs when I was injured. Frustratingly, I’ve been through back problems before and my medical team decided it best to shut down all practice and play. “Therefore, I wanted to inform Golf Australia as well as provide Ernie as much time as possible to best prepare our International Team for Royal Melbourne. I look forward to playing at home in the near future. My best to all the competitors in Sydney and my teammates in Melbourne.â€ Day did not elaborate on his recovery period but it is likely he won’t return before the Farmers Insurance Open on Jan. 23-26 where he is a two-time champion.

Kim takes lead after 54 holes at the Wyndham ChampionshipKim takes lead after 54 holes at the Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Si Woo Kim had a hole-in-one on the way to a 62 for a two-shot lead over Doc Redman and Rob Oppenheim through three rounds of the Wyndham Championship on Saturday. Kim, who’s at 18 under after 54 holes, made history three years ago when at 21 he became the youngest winner of THE PLAYERS Championship. Now, he’s seeking his first victory since — and playing strongly wherever he tees it up. RELATED: Leaderboard | Round 3 update: FedExCup Playoffs, Wyndham Rewards | Final stretch in full swing at Regular Season finale Kim has broken 70 in nine of his last 10 rounds, including all four at TPC Harding Park to finish tied for 13th at the PGA Championship. He has continued that stellar play at Sedgefield Country Club, where he won his first PGA TOUR event in 2016. Redman had a 63, while Oppenheim set a career low on TOUR with a 62 in second at 16 under. Billy Horschel shot a 65 and was three strokes back at 15 under. Mark Hubbard (64) and Jim Herman were another stroke back at 14 under. Herman shot a 61, a career best and tied for lowest round of the tournament. But it was Kim’s sizzling play that stood out in this one. He got going when his 8-iron on the 161-yard, third hole found the cup for his third ace on tour. Kim clipped the cup on the par-3 12th, settling 14 inches away for another birdie. Kim kept it up with birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to take the lead. Oppenheim was bidding for a 60 when he birdied the next-to-last hole to move to 17 under. But his only bogey of the round on the final hole dropped him back. Oppenheim, 40, has put himself in line to make the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time, moving up from 145 on the list to a projected 77, with the top 125 making it to THE NORTHERN TRUST next week. He’d love to add his first TOUR title to the mix, too. Redman, 22, is also seeking his first PGA TOUR win. He joined the tie for second after matching his career low score of 63. Redman took bogey on his opening hole, then had eight birdies the rest of the way. The PGA TOUR moved up tee times, grouped competitors in threesomes and sent them off on the first and 10th tees to beat the bad weather expected later Saturday. The early, dry conditions set off a run of low scores that contenders had no choice but to keep up with throughout the round. In all, 52 of the 77 competitors finished with rounds in the 60s. There were two 61s, the lowest score this week, from Jim Herman and Zach Johnson, the Payne Stewart Award winner who is striving to make the Playoffs after a subpar season. Johnson was projected at 109 in FedExCup points after starting the round outside the Playoffs at 129. Past champion Webb Simpson (65) and Peter Malnati were at 13 under.

Sam Ryder’s jogger pants turns headsSam Ryder’s jogger pants turns heads

Sam Ryder turned heads during the final round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in more ways than one. A sizzling 9-under par 62 vaulted him 11 places up the leaderboard to a solo third finish. While his game made plenty of noise on the course, it was his fashion statement that had the social media world buzzing. Ryder looked like a modern Johnny Cash as he strolled the fairways in a black monochromatic outfit. The sleek kit included a pair of slim-fitting Montauk Joggers from Greyson Clothiers and a pair of Brogue Kiltie Gallivanter Shoes by G/FORE. Ryder also worked in Greyson’s high-tech Tala Polo to complete the all-black look. “If it is not too hot, I like wearing black-on-black a lot. When TrendyGolf sent me the Greyson joggers, they fit perfectly. I wear so many sweatpants and joggers in general, said Ryder. Ironically, this was not the first time he wore this outfit. He flew under the radar in this stealthy kit during the final round of the Safeway Open last month. “I wore the joggers at the Northern Trust and I loved them. I wore them again in the final round in Napa with the same outfit. I wore black pants socks with them then, so I wasn’t showing the same amount of ankle as I did in Vegas, continued Ryder. “I played great and finished one shot back from a playoff in Napa. I felt good in that outfit and I played well. I tend to wear outfits again if I play well in them. I was saving it and the weather turned out to be perfect for black clothing in Vegas. While most players on the PGA TOUR have sponsorship deals with an apparel brand, Sam Ryder has taken a unique approach to his on-course wardrobe. Early this year he partnered with TrendyGolf, an e-commerce company known for selling fashionable and functional golf apparel brands. As part of his sponsorship, Ryder wears a variety of the labels sold by TrendyGolf, often mixing and matching brands in one outfit. “I had known about TrendyGolf for a while. I’ve had an interest in golf fashion and my agent had a good relationship with one of their co-founders. I was super stoked about it because they had so many cool things on their website. The hardest thing was getting the sizing dialed down between J.Lindeberg versus Greyson versus RLX or Original Penguin. We did that and they got an idea of the things I like to wear. They pushed me out of my comfort zone at times and it has really been a fun year getting to wear a lot of different brands, explained Ryder. Although Ryder has worn a variety of brands throughout 2018, he has consistently turned out some of his best looks while wearing Greyson. “I’ve been wearing a lot of Greyson all year. I just love the fit and the quality and performance of the materials. I like a lot of the styles, too. They are doing fun things from the fashion side by pushing an ‘old-school meets modern style’. I’ve really enjoyed wearing it, said Ryder. Founded in 2015 by Charlie Schaefer, Greyson has quickly gained popularity with TOUR players thanks to Schaefer’s creative and thoughtful designs. First worn on TOUR by Morgan Hoffmann, the brand has attracted Luke Donald, Kelly Kraft, Fabian Gomez, and rookie Kramer Hickok to its wolfpack over the last two years. At the heart of Greyson’s success is Schaefer’s unique ability to play with a juxtaposition of styles, often mixing traditional herringbones and pinstripes with edgy camos and other bold patterns. Sam Ryder borrowed a page from this book on Sunday by pairing a modern jogger with the vintage-looking shoe from G/FORE. When it comes to his on-course looks, Ryder likes to style himself, but consults with Adrienne Cass, who brought him onboard while she was the managing director at TrendyGolf. “Adrienne has been great with helping me out. She has a great sense of style and has been my wingman. She also scripted me for the Playoff event. A lot of it is just asking her opinions on different outfits, said Ryder. Ryder also has an interesting take on whether golf fashion should be more progressive. “I don’t think it has to be. I think it can be and it should be encouraged to make things exciting. Whether you are a fan of what I wore on Sunday or not, at least it creates some more buzz and it gets some more eyes on golf. I don’t think it took away from Bryson winning the golf tournament, Patrick finishing second, or my really good round of golf. I think guys should have a little leeway as long as you are doing it tastefully. I think there are some limits, but as long as it’s not affecting other competitors, then I don’t see why not. Sam Ryder looks to build on his strong finish in Las Vegas at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico this week. Will the joggers make another appearance? He says he has a grey pair of the Greyson Montauks in his suitcase. Stay tuned.
