Adam Scott comes a long way in a year at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide

DUBLIN, Ohio – A year ago Adam Scott was humbled in Ohio. His game had slipped and was at a crossroads. Would he find another gear to get back amongst the contenders on the PGA TOUR or would the 13-time winner fade away into some form of obscurity? While Scott has not added to his win tally in the last 12 months – a resume that includes victories at The PLAYERS Championship and the Masters – he has significantly lifted his game. That trend continued Friday when a 6-under 66 moved Scott to 7 under at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide through two rounds, just two back of the clubhouse lead after the morning wave. A year ago the Australian had slipped far enough down the world rankings that his play at Muirfield Village would be the determining factor in whether he would play his 17th consecutive U.S. Open and 68th straight major championship. Going into Sunday he was sitting well placed at T11 but shot 73 in the final round to tumble to T35. It meant he would have to front up to 36-hole sectional qualifying the following day if he was to keep his streak alive. Frustrated and annoyed Scott had contemplated not bothering. He had just one top-10 to that point in 14 starts on the season and was on the end of playing five straight weeks. But after some anger subsided, pride kicked in, and he decided to have a crack at getting to Shinnecock. Related: Tee times | Watch PGA TOUR LIVE | Down a rib, Merritt makes his move “It was definitely pride. I wanted to be at the U.S. Open. Unsatisfied just mailing it in and sitting on the couch when I could have been given a start,â€ Scott said. “It wasn’t like I was just playing horrible, but I just really couldn’t get anything to go my way. If I did something good, the other part of my game was ordinary. And I guess that had gone on for a while. And it takes its toll on the brain.â€ Scott’s performance at the sectional was impressive. He rushed out of the blocks with a 6-under 66 at the tougher Brookside Golf & Country Club and then held on with an even par 72 at the Lakes Golf and Country Club to be one of 14 qualifiers. He missed the cut at Shinnecock but soon after fueled with confidence again, he finished T17 at the Open Championship and then contended with Brooks Koepka down the stretch before settling for third place at the PGA Championship. Scott tacked on a T5 to open the FedExCup Playoffs and although he fell short of the TOUR Championship the uptick in form continued into the 2018-19 season. He was runner up at the Farmers Insurance Open and also contended at the Genesis Open (T7), the PLAYERS (T12), Masters (T18) and PGA Championship (T8) to sit 36th in the FedExCup heading into this week. And Muirfield Village is a place Scott believes he should have conquered. In his 11 previous appearances he has three top-5 finishes. “It really sets up well for me, and I feel like I’ve played a lot of good golf here over the years, just never four days in a row. It’s just never been quite enough,â€ he said. “But I’ve shot some of my really great rounds of my career here. I remember 62 in ’06 that was such a good round of golf on a very, very difficult golf course that day.â€ The question now becomes can Scott still close out over the weekend. His last win came in 2016. The return to form has been promising, but can he take it up a notch? A year ago he was just trying to get a top-10. Now he wants trophies again. “I did a really good job of it at the PGA, just getting out of my own way on the weekend, and I played really well and I hung in there right to the end,â€ Scott claimed. “It’s funny, and so quickly then the expectation changes and it’s now you need to win tournaments. And it just hasn’t happened. “It’s just about kind of doing what I did at that PGA and staying out of my own way and not really thinking about outcomes and all that cliché mental stuff and just play with a bit of confidence and a bit of fun.â€ Oh and that major streak? It will hit 73 at Pebble Beach in June at the U.S. Open. This time he’s already exempt.

USGA backtracks on Justin Thomas criticismUSGA backtracks on Justin Thomas criticism

The United States Golf Association (USGA) clarified its earlier comments regarding Justin Thomas and his criticism of a controversial penalty at the Honda Classic over the weekend. Thomas was among those to hit out at the USGA on Saturday after Adam Schenk was assessed a two-stroke penalty for a rules violation in the second round. The violation occurred when Schenk’s caddie stood behind him once he was in his stance on the 17th hole on Friday.

Netflix tees up documentary series set inside the PGA TOUR and golf’s major championshipsNetflix tees up documentary series set inside the PGA TOUR and golf’s major championships

Netflix has linked up with the PGA TOUR and golf’s major championships for an immersive documentary series following the lives and stories of top professional golfers across a season of high-stakes competition. For the first time ever, the PGA TOUR and the governing bodies that conduct men’s major championships — Augusta National Golf Club, the PGA of America, the USGA, and The R&A – will provide entry into the sport’s biggest events including THE PLAYERS Championship and season-ending FedExCup, as well as the four majors: the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open Championship and The Open. With unprecedented access inside the ropes and behind the scenes, the series will capture the intensity of training, travel, victory, and defeat through the lens of a diverse group of players and their support teams. Current PGA TOUR player commitments include (alphabetically): Abraham Ancer, Daniel Berger, Cameron Champ, Joel Dahmen, Tony Finau, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Harry Higgs, Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Kevin Na, Mito Pereira, Ian Poulter, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Bubba Watson. Additionally, the world’s #1-ranked amateur golfer, Keita Nakajima, will participate as he plays in the first major championships of his career. “This partnership with Netflix presents the PGA TOUR and the four major championships an opportunity to tap into a completely new and diverse audience,” said Rick Anderson, Chief Media Officer of the PGA TOUR. “This documentary will give fans an authentic look into the real lives of our athletes, and what it’s like to win — and lose — during a season on the PGA TOUR.” “We are thrilled to bring golf’s leading organizations and players together for this first-of-its-kind partnership and unparalleled window into life on the Tour,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix Vice President of Unscripted and Documentary Series. “Our members will love getting to know the players and personalities as well as the iconic venues along the way. Even the most devoted golf fans have never seen the sport quite like this.” The series is produced by Vox Media Studios (Explained) and Box To Box Films (Formula 1: Drive to Survive). Executive producers are David Check (30 for 30, Four Days in October); Chad Mumm and Mark Olsen for Vox Media Studios; and James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin for Box to Box Films. Filming is underway now throughout 2022.

The First Look: John Deere ClassicThe First Look: John Deere Classic

• COURSE: TPC Deere Run, 7,268 yards, par 71. Built on rolling landscape alongside the Rock River, D.A. Weibring’s 1999 design deftly mixes scenic views and risk/reward challenge on a site that once housed a long-ago tribal village and later an Arabian horse-breeding operation. Weibring used dramatic elevation changes to frame several holes, notably the downhill 14th that measures 361 yards and tempts long hitters to drive a green that offers punishment for shots either long or left. Typically a place that yields low scores, Deere Run carved its place in the record book seven years ago when Paul Goydos carded just the fourth 59 recorded on the PGA TOUR. Eventual winner Steve Stricker shot 60 that day. • FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 points. • CHARITY: The John Deere Classic has raised more than $70 million for Quad Cities charities since its 1971 inception, most of it generated by its “Birdies for Charity program. The tournament annually ranks No.1 in charity donations per capita on the PGA TOUR. • FIELD WATCH: 2012 champion and JDC board member Zach Johnson tops the roster, joined FedEx St. Jude Classic winner Daniel Berger and Dean & Deluca Invitational champ Kevin Kisner. … In all, six of this season’s tournament winners and seven of the FedExCup top 30 will tee it up at Deere Run. … Stricker, whose three-peat from 2009-11 still stands as the last time anyone has captured the same PGA TOUR event three straight years, returns for his 16th appearance. … Two of the top four players in the world amateur rankings are set to play on sponsor invites. Maverick McNealy, whose 11 tournament wins at Stanford matched that of Tiger Woods and Patrick Rodgers, holds the No.2 ranking and former Illinois standout Dylan Meyer stands fourth. • 72-HOLE RECORD: 258, Steve Stricker (2010). • 18-HOLE RECORD: 59, Paul Goydos (1st round, 2010). • LAST YEAR: Ryan Moore collected his fifth PGA TOUR victory, playing bogey-free over his final 46 holes to finish off a two-stroke win over Ben Martin. Three birdies on Deere Run’s front nine pushed Moore to a five-shot advantage on the final day, throttling back with pars after the turn while Martin used a three-birdie run to pull within two. That was the closest anyone got, though, as Moore left no opening down the stretch in a closing 67. Moore carded just one bogey over the entire week, notching his first win since 2014 in Malaysia. The performance began a run of four top-10 finishes in six starts for Moore – three in the FedExCup playoffs – to place seventh in the final FedExCup standings. It also earned the former UNLV standout a captain’s selection to the U.S. Ryder Cup team, where he helped the Americans celebrate their first win since 2008. • STORYLINES: Johnson, a Cedar Rapids native, owns six top-three finishes in his past eight visits, with three runner-up finishes go to with his 2012 win. He’s a combined 133-under par in that stretch; last year’s second-day 71 ended a run of 29 consecutive rounds in the 60s. … Stricker, who owns three top-16 finishes this season in just eight starts, seeks again to become the Classic’s first four-time winner. He also has four top-10 finishes in five starts on the PGA TOUR Champions. … The final Open Championship berth next week awaits the highest top-5 finisher who hasn’t already punched his ticket to Royal Birkdale. • SHORT CHIPS: A total of 15 entrants at Deere Run already have qualified for next week’s Open lineup, including Moore and 2015 champion golfer Johnson. A charter flight awaits them Sunday night, provided by Deere Classic officials each year to fly them across the Atlantic. … The University of Illinois again is well-represented with five entrants – Stricker, Meyer, D.A. Points, Brian Campbell and current Illini golfer Nick Hardy. Friday traditionally is designated as Illini Day at Deere Run. • TELEVISION: Thursday-Friday, 4-7 p.m. ET (Golf Channel). Saturday-Sunday, 1-2:30 p.m. (GC), 3-6 p.m. (CBS). • PGA TOUR LIVE: Thursday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. (featured groups), 4-7 p.m. (featured holes). • RADIO: Thursday-Friday, 1-7 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, 1-6 p.m. (PGA TOUR Radio on SiriusXM and PGATOUR.com).
