2017 Wyndham Championship, Round 1: Leaderboard, tee times, TV schedule

Here are nine tidbits from the third round of the World Golf Championship-Mexico Championship at the Club de Golf Chapultepec outside Mexico City that gamers can use tomorrow, this weekend or down the road. Be on the lookout for the Emergency 9 shortly after the close of play of each round of the tournament. Curry Up Shubhankar Sharma maintained his two-shot lead playing in the final group in Round 3 with Xander Schauffele and Rafael Cabrera Bello. The 21-year-old Indian posted 69 (-2), his third-consecutive round in the 60’s, to post the 54-hole lead. Just nine gamers selected him in the PGA TOUR Fantasy One & Done presented by SERVPRO while less than one percent of gamers selected him in the PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO. The heat turns up on Sunday as he’ll spot Phil Mickelson two shots in the final group as he hopes to achieve the unthinkable. The Final Group Mickelson’s torrid run continues as his third-round, bogey-free 65 has him poised to win his first TOUR event since the 2013 Open Championship. He entered the week with an aggregate score of 36-under-par in his last three events (T5, T2 and T6). According to stat maven Justin Ray, Phil Mickelson has never cashed T6 or better in four straight events. Ever. Who will be dealing with the most pressure in the final group? Stay tuned. Been There, Done That #NappyFactor is the most wonderful “Loch Ness Monster” of gaming. Sergio Garcia, whose wife’s baby is due March 17th, has won this year and also posted T32 in Dubai and T33 at The Honda Classic. He is the most recent winner of the top five and should be confident heading into tomorrow with who is surrounding him on the leaderboard. Running Down a Dream The other half of the Spanish Armada, Rafael Cabrera Bello, held serve with 69 and enters Sunday T2. Like Sharma, he’s trying to breakthrough with his first win on the PGA TOUR. He’s only won once in since 2013, so you can see why I’m leaning on Garcia. RCB leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting for the week, but I’m interested to see if that putting stroke holds up on the back nine Sunday. Repeat After Me Defending champion Dustin Johnson is not going quietly into the good night. His 68 in Round 3 has him sitting just three shots off the lead and in position to repeat. After missing 16 putts (!) inside 10 feet last year, he’s first in putts-per-GIR and fifth in Strokes-Gained: Putting this time around. Imagine if he finds a couple more fairways and greens tomorrow! Moving Day: Right Way I’ve cursed Englishman Tyrrell Hatton by spelling his name incorrectly since he’s been on TOUR. #MyBad. I’d suggest you join Twitter just to follow him as his sense of humour alone is worth the follow. Gamers have heard the phrase “beware the injured golfer” before. Hatton entered the week with a bit of “Tourista” and was unsure of how he would perform, especially wearing white trousers. The answer was a resounding, bogey-free 64 in Round 3 to complete his second round in a row without a bogey, moving up 18 spots to T2. … One question that newer gamers have usually centers on how the previous week’s winner will perform next time out. Justin Thomas resides in the group of “no worries” after his Hawaii double to begin 2017. He reinforced that angle with 62 today that jumped him 28 spots to 10th. He’s only four shots out of the lead, and he’ll need another low one tomorrow to bounce higher up the board. I’m not betting against that happening. Moving Day: Wrong Way Bubba Watson had three birdies but also had a pair of bogeys and a double to drop out of the top five to T17. Pro gamers will point out trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube is easier than predicting Watson’s results. … Daniel Berger is trying the patience of gamers for the second week in a row. His Sunday 75 at The Honda Classic knocked him down the leaderboard to T29. His 72 (+1) knocked him out of the top 15 on Saturday. … Louis Oosthuizen’s 75 at The Honda Classic on Sunday saw him finish T24. His 76 in Round 3 dropped him from T5 to T32. Can’t Win For Losing The most popular golfer in both PGA TOUR game formats, Tommy Fleetwood, helped in both of them today. I wrote yesterday that I would bench him in an effort to spark him up the leaderboard. His 67 moved him up 11 spots to T29 and helped the gamers who kept him in the lineup for Saturday. He’s 10 shots out of the lead, so he’ll need a Justin Thomas-like performance tomorrow to reward his O&D investors. Study Hall The 62 posted by Justin Thomas saw him post the course record, one shot better than his buddy Jordan Spieth (63) from last year. … Pat Perez leads the field with 17 birdies. … The cleanest card goes to Tyrrell Hatton (spell-checked) as the Englishman has two bogeys and nothing worse. … Jhonattan Vegas has 40 pars but his 10 birdies and four pars are only good for T17. Bogey avoidance is nice but making birdies is better.

Oh Canada! It is time for the national championship of those living under the Maple Leaf, where the locals are hoping to end a significant title drought, but several of those from other parts of the world have other ideas as the race for the FedExCup Playoffs gets super serious. The RBC Canadian Open has been played since 1904, but Pat Fletcher was the last Canadian winner of the tournament in 1954, but he was born in England. Karl Keffer is the only Canadian-born champion, winning in 1909 and 1914. English-born Canadian brothers Charlie Murray (1906) and Albert Murray (1908 and 1913) also captured the title. This week’s PGA TOUR LIVE coverage gives us a look at some Canadian hopefuls but also FedExCup No. 2 and world No. 1 Dustin Johnson, plus the in-form Matt Kuchar, who wants to quickly get over his Open Championship loss. PGA TOUR LIVE will broadcast between 7 a.m. Eastern and 6:00 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday. He’s proven he can win, now can he do it at home? Scott Piercy showed how to win the Canadian Open in 2012 and now he’s chasing a fourth TOUR win while Els is looking to capture the old magic as one of the Team RBC ambassadors. Tee time: 8:00 a.m. Eastern off 10th tee. Bubba Watson (117), Graeme McDowell (119), Matt Kuchar (17): Some big-name star power here with Kuchar coming off his runner up finish to Jordan Spieth at the Open Championship. He’s likely to want to put the memory aside with a dominant display. Watson and McDowell, both major winners sitting just inside the top 125 in the race for the FedExCup. They need some results to make sure of their place in the post season. Tee time: 8:10 a.m. Eastern off 10th tee. FRIDAY Grayson Murray (60), Adam Hadwin (13), Nick Taylor (78): Murray kept the trend of young winners running with his breakthrough at the Barbasol Championship last week and now gets the chance to back it up in a full-field event. He will be playing in front of some vocal locals as Hadwin and Taylor fly the Canadian flag. Hadwin, a winner earlier this season, is looking to consolidate a place in the International Presidents Cup team and Taylor wants a breakthrough result of his own. Tee time: 8:00 a.m. Eastern off 10th tee. Dustin Johnson (2), Jhonattan Vegas (87), Jim Furyk (147): Johnson lost the top spot on the FedExCup list with Spieth’s win in England but he can get it back if he wins in Canada. He’s burning after a slide on Sunday and will now look for win no.4 on the season with a chip on his shoulder. Vegas claimed the win at Glen Abbey last season and with hopes of making a run towards the International team in the Presidents Cup this week comes at an opportune time for the Venezuelan. Furyk, an RBC man, needs something big to make the FedExCup Playoffs. This could be the week he makes his move. Tee time: 8:10 a.m. Eastern off 10th tee.

BLAINE, Minn. – Richy Werenski made a short birdie putt on the par-5 18th for an 8-under 63 to take the first-round lead Thursday in the 3M Open. The 24-year-old Werenski is winless on the PGA TOUR. He broke a tie with Michael Thompson with his ninth and last birdie on the warm, windy afternoon at the TPC Twin Cities. Defending champion Matthew Wolff, Tony Finau, Nick Watney, Ryan Moore, Xinjun Zhang and Max Homa were tied for third at 65. His victory at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, last month did not spark a post-shutdown surge. After posting back-to-back 80s last week at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide for the highest 36-hole score of his pro career, Johnson’s first appearance at the 3M Open north of Minneapolis lasted just one round. At the end of his first nine, Johnson started the 599-yard, dog-leg 18th hole with a solid drive off the tee. With 209 yards to get to the flag, he used his 6-iron for a shot — “perfect,” he said — that was swallowed up in the pond just short of the rough. “Hit it right at it and never once did I think it was going to go in the water,” said Johnson, who did mention his back during a brief post-round interview. His next two tries met the same fate. Three penalty strokes later, Johnson finally landed his ball on the green for a tap-in putt and a quadruple-bogey nine on the scorecard. “Kind of the same last week. I just struggled with my iron play, and that makes it difficult,” he said. Watney, who was the first PGA TOUR player to test positive for the coronavirus, at the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, failed to make the cut two weeks ago at the Workday Charity Open in Dublin, Ohio, after a two-round score of 150. The 39-year-old Watney, who has five career PGA TOUR victories, went back to the basics in practice last week — aim, balance, posture — while most of his peers played the Memorial. “I’m trying to put that to bed, get past it and hopefully play some nice golf after coming down with that,” Watney said. “It’s great to be up here after playing a good round as opposed to just other things.”
