19th hole: Expectations for Tiger Woods’ latest comeback

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – Brooks Koepka’s victory at last year’s U.S. Open sent traditionalists into a tizzy. Those accustomed to knee-high rough and narrow fairways were disgusted with Koepka’s ability to wield driver with impunity on a course that was too wide and too soft for their liking. One year after winning on a modern golf course making its U.S. Open debut, Koepka has a chance to make history on one of the country’s most historic layouts. Shinnecock Hills hosted the second U.S. Open and is the only course to host this tournament in three different centuries. This venerable Long Island layout unquestionably offers an old-school test. Koepka is one of four players to share the 54-hole lead at Shinnecock Hills with a score of 3-over 213. Last year, he shot 16 under par to win at Erin Hills. His ability to excel on two disparate designs is testament to a game built on more than brute strength. Curtis Strange (1988-89) and Ben Hogan (1950-51) are the only two men to win back-to-back U.S. Opens since World War II. They crafted games that emphasized accuracy over distance to meet the strict demands of their national championship. Koepka, with his linebacker’s build and biceps that burst out of his tailored sleeves, is a modern player who hits the ball distances that were once unfathomable. But he also has a strong short game and the fortitude to withstand a stern setup. Koepka has finished no worse than T21 in his past 10 major championships, including five top-10s. He has four consecutive top-20s at the U.S. Open. He won last year and finished T4 in 2014. “I enjoy firing away from pins and having to be conservative sometimes and just finding a way to get through it,� Koepka said. “I feel like the harder the golf course, the better.� They don’t get much harder than Shinnecock Hills on Saturday. The field averaged 75.3 strokes as the greens grew firm in the warm, windy conditions. Hole locations set near the steep edges of Shinnecock’s putting surfaces forced players to avoid the hole with their approach shots. Koepka’s 72 tied the low score among the last 20 players to tee off. He was 1 under par for the first 11 holes but bogeyed three of his final seven holes. He holed a 63-foot par putt on the 14th green, then bogeyed the 15th after his wedge shot landed on the green but rolled into a bunker. He three-putted the par-3 17th before making par on the last hole. Daniel Berger and Tony Finau will play in Sunday’s final group after shooting third-round 66s. They both made the cut with just a shot to spare before shooting Saturday’s low scores. The past two U.S. Open champions, Koepka and Dustin Johnson, are their closest pursuers. Johnson, 33, is a friend and mentor to the 28-year-old Koepka. They share a swing coach, Claude Harmon, and trainer, Joey Diovisalvi, in South Florida. “We’ll be friends after the round, not during� said Johnson, who won last week’s FedEx St. Jude Classic to regain in the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking. Koepka is playing just his seventh tournament of the year after missing nearly four months with a wrist injury. He reinjured the wrist at THE PLAYERS but finished T11 after a record-tying 63 in the final round. He shot two more 63s in his next start to finish second to Justin Rose at the Fort Worth Invitational. “My game is in a good spot,� Koepka said. “I feel like you have to kind of take (the trophy) from me, to be honest.� He’ll accomplish a historic feat if he can keep his grasp on it.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida, USA, and VIRGINIA WATER, Surrey, England – The PGA TOUR and European Tour today unveiled new details around their Strategic Alliance, with the PGA TOUR also releasing its 2021-22 PGA TOUR Season schedule. The landmark agreement, announced in November 2020, further enhances and connects the ecosystem of men’s professional golf through a number of areas, including global scheduling, prize funds and playing opportunities for the respective memberships. The latter event also has a new title sponsor in Genesis, the luxury automotive brand from South Korea, who will now title sponsor two tournaments on the PGA TOUR, with the Genesis Scottish Open joining The Genesis Invitational, which Genesis has titled since 2017; The Genesis Invitational will once again be played at The Riviera Country Club next year (February 14-20). The Genesis Scottish Open (July 4-10), which is part of the European Tour’s Rolex Series, retains its place in golf’s global calendar the week ahead of The Open Championship (July 11-17), a date confirmed through to 2025. The player field will be a split between members of both Tours. The tournament will also benefit from the continued commitment of the Scottish Government, managed by Visit Scotland – the agreement also running through 2025. “We are delighted to welcome Genesis as a title sponsor of a European Tour event for the first time,” said European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley. “Genesis has a strong history of sponsorship on the PGA TOUR through The Genesis Invitational, and their commitment to the Scottish Open will further enhance one of our premier events of the season. Although it will be on the PGA TOUR’s official schedule for the first time, the Genesis Scottish Open has a rich history on the European Tour, appearing in the Tour’s first two official seasons (1972 and 1973) and as part of the Tour’s International Schedule since 1986. Both events will be added to the Race to Dubai for European Tour members. THE PLAYERS will be in year three of its March date and as a kickoff to the Season of Championships, with Justin Thomas returning as defending champion. The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (May 30-June 5) enters the first year of a 10-year agreement in 2022 with new presenting sponsor, Workday. Founded in 1976 by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and held annually at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, the tournament partners for the first time with three-time NBA champion and two-time MVP Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, and Ayesha Curry, an entrepreneur, host and New York Times bestselling author. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the RBC Canadian Open (June 6-12) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, returns to the schedule in 2022 at St. George’s Golf and Country Club. Rory McIlroy won the last RBC Canadian Open, played in 2019. Other notable items and changes to the 2021-22 PGA TOUR Schedule include (in chronological order): 2021 • As previously announced, the Fortinet Championship (September 13-19), with new title sponsor Fortinet, kicks off the 2021-22 FedExCup Regular Season at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California. • The Ryder Cup will be played the week following the Fortinet Championship, with nine official events played during the balance of 2021 for a total of 10 events to be played in the fall. • The reconfigured Asia Swing will begin with THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT (October 11-17), which moves to the United States for the second year in a row and will be staged at The Summit Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, delivering back-to-back weeks of PGA TOUR golf in Las Vegas, as the Shriners Children’s Open will be contested October 4-10. • Following THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT will be the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP and World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, with additional details to be available in the near future. • As previously announced, World Wide Technology embarks on its first year of title sponsorship of the TOUR’s original event in Mexico, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba (November 1-7). 2022 • The Sentry Tournament of Champions – a PGA TOUR winners-only event – leads off the 2022 calendar year (January 3-9). • The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (January 31-February 6) and the Waste Management Phoenix Open (February 7-13) trade spots in the schedule, as the TOUR’s event at TPC Scottsdale remains in its traditional date of Super Bowl week. • The Puerto Rico Open (February 28-March 6) will be played as an additional event alongside the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. • The Corales Puntacana Championship (March 21-27), in its first year under an extended term, will be played as an additional event alongside the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play. • The Mexico Championship (April 25-May 1) returns to the calendar as a PGA TOUR co-sponsored event, no longer under the World Golf Championships umbrella.
